The four questions, in order: 1. What is your number? 2. How many people is this one gift for? 3. Do you actually know their taste? 4. Which room will it live in?
Where the branches end: hard to buy for → Mountain Breeze ₹849. Known floral lover → Garden Bloom ₹799. Coffee house → Fresh Brew ₹849. Kitchen or small flat → Morning Freshness ₹749. A couple → the Day & Night duo ₹1,498. A room above 150 sq ft → a 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349.
The honest gap, stated first: if your answer to question one is under ₹500, the tree stops there — there is no reed diffuser below ₹749 and no machine below ₹899. That branch ends at a jar candle at ₹379 or a ₹449 single, and I would rather say so on the first screen.
2. Ask how many people this one gift is for. One person → a 50ml. A couple, or a household with two firm opinions → the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498, which is two separate bottles. This question comes second because it changes the shape of the answer, and shape outranks scent.
3. Ask whether you genuinely know their taste, and be strict about the word genuinely. If you have never heard them state a preference, you do not know it, and the answer is Evening Calm ₹799. If they are simply hard to buy for — nothing has ever landed, the tastes in the house conflict — the answer is Mountain Breeze ₹849, the least gendered scent we make. If you have actually heard them say they like flowers, Garden Bloom ₹799. If the house drinks filter coffee every afternoon, Fresh Brew ₹849.
4. Ask which room it will live in, and size to the room rather than to the budget. Up to roughly 150 sq ft — bedroom, bathroom, home office — a 50ml, running 6–8 weeks. Above that — a living room, an open-plan flat, a joint family home — a 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349, running 14–18 weeks. A kitchen is the one room with a fixed answer: Morning Freshness, because citrus complements cooking and florals argue with it.
5. Adjust the reed count before you second-guess the scent. Six fibre reeds ship in every bottle and they are the volume dial. Six for a living room, three or four for a bedroom, two or three in a small bathroom — where a 50ml will then run close to three months. For an older household, put three in and say so out loud when you hand it over.

Question one: what is your number — and the branch that ends here
This question comes first because it is the only one that can terminate the tree before any scent is discussed, and putting it anywhere else wastes the reader's time. The SOSA reed line starts at ₹749 and there is nothing below it. No 30ml, no starter size, no smaller bottle held back for a sale. The cheapest diffuser machine is the Boond at ₹899. The only item on the whole store under ₹300 is the Hotel Collection 15ml at ₹299, and that is a water-based refill for an ultrasonic machine — it does nothing at all without hardware the recipient almost certainly does not own, so it is not a gift, it is a spare part.
So the first branch is a genuine dead end and it is worth walking down it properly rather than sending you back up. If your number is under ₹500, the real shelf is jar candles at ₹379, a two-pack at ₹664, the Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh at ₹449, wax melts at ₹474 and 3ml attars at ₹379–₹399. Those are complete gifts rather than consolation prizes, and for a cousin or a wider family list they are the correct object anyway. One piece of arithmetic worth knowing before you decide: free shipping starts at ₹499. A single ₹379 candle does not clear it; a ₹749 reed does. The distance between ₹379 and ₹749 is smaller once that is counted than it looks on the page.
Jar candles₹379Take the jar candles at ₹379 or the ₹449 singles and stop looking for a diffuser, because there is not one. For a family list this branch is often the right one anyway: cousins, an aunt, the wider ring of names all want an impersonal, identical, carriable object rather than a bottle. Buy the same candle for all of them. And use only the plain, message-free ones for anybody senior — we do make candles with jokes printed on them and they are the wrong object in a room with four generations in it.
Morning Freshness₹749All five 50ml bottles sit inside this band — ₹749, ₹799, ₹799, ₹849, ₹849 — which means the price stops being a variable and scent becomes the only remaining question. That is the useful property of this band and the reason it is the commercial centre of family gifting. Everything here runs 6–8 weeks, ships with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, and suits a room up to roughly 150 sq ft. Proceed to question two.
Day & Night duo₹1,498At this number you are choosing between two different things rather than between two prices. A 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 buys duration: 14–18 weeks instead of 6–8, and the correct size for a room above 150 sq ft. The Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 buys plurality: two 50ml bottles for two people or two rooms. Note that the other two duos, Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548 and Warmth & Bloom at ₹1,598, sit above ₹1,500 — so at a hard ₹1,500 ceiling, Day & Night is the only duo available.
Questions two and three: how many people, and do you actually know them
Question two is asked before scent because it changes the shape of the answer and shape outranks scent. If the gift is going to one person, you want one bottle. If it is going to a couple or to a household with two firm and different opinions, you want two, and the Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 is two separate 50ml bottles rather than a boxed presentation of one idea. The reason is simple and it applies to in-laws, to grandparents and to any married sibling: a single object sent to two people leaves one of them a bystander, and everyone in the room can tell which one.
Question three is the one people answer dishonestly, so it is worth setting a strict test. You know somebody's fragrance taste if you have heard them say it — not if you have inferred it from their handbag, their sari, their kitchen or their gender. That last inference is the single commonest error in family gifting: a floral bought for a woman because she is a woman. Garden Bloom is our most-gifted scent and it is genuinely excellent, and it is still the wrong bottle for somebody whose views on rose you have never heard, because anti-floral is a common and firmly held position rather than a mild preference. If you cannot recall the sentence, treat the answer as no.
When the answer is no, the four blind-buy criteria decide it: low strength, low polarisation, room-agnostic, and no cultural or memory loading. Evening Calm at ₹799 is the only one of the five that clears all four. And when the answer is they are simply impossible to buy for — a different condition from not knowing, and the one that describes most fathers and several brothers — the answer is Mountain Breeze at ₹849, which is the least gendered and least sweet thing in the range. One buyer sent it to her father for his study, describes him as the hardest person she has ever bought fragrance for, and reports that he asked for a second bottle. Another sends it into a shared bedroom where his partner dislikes anything she considers masculine, and she asked him to refill it.
Every branch of the tree, and the bottle it ends at
The complete tree in one table, with each condition, the terminal answer and the reasoning. Read down the left column until you find the row that describes your situation; the row you land on is your answer. Note the last two rows, which do not end at a bottle.
| If this describes you | The answer | Why the tree ends here | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| You do not know their taste at all | Evening Calm 50ml ★ | The only scent clearing all four blind-buy criteria. 8.9, softest in the range, no cultural loading | ₹799 |
| They are impossible to buy for; nothing has ever landed | Mountain Breeze 50ml | Least gendered, least sweet register in the line. Pine, sage and cedar in a study | ₹849 |
| You have actually heard them say they like flowers | Garden Bloom 50ml | Our most-gifted floral, and excellent — but only on this branch, never as a guess | ₹799 |
| The household drinks coffee every afternoon | Fresh Brew 50ml | Real Coorg coffee rather than a syrup accord. At 9.5 the deepest we make, and never a blind buy | ₹849 |
| It is for a kitchen, a bathroom, or a small newer flat | Morning Freshness 50ml | The only register that complements cooking rather than fighting it. Also the cheapest reed | ₹749 |
| The gift is for a couple, or two people with firm opinions | Day & Night duo | Two separate 50ml bottles, so neither person is the bystander. Not a gift set — genuinely two bottles | ₹1,498 |
| The room is above roughly 150 sq ft, or it is the family home | A 130ml reed | 14–18 weeks rather than 6–8, and the correct size for a shared living room | ₹1,249–₹1,349 |
| The household finds most fragrance too strong | Evening Calm, three reeds | The softest scent at the lowest reed count. Free to do, and the commonest fix nobody applies | ₹799 |
| Your number is under ₹500 | A jar candle ₹379 or a ₹449 single | There is no reed diffuser below ₹749 and no machine below ₹899. The tree genuinely stops | ₹379–₹474 |
| It is a first visit to elders, or sweets are the greeting | Take the mithai | Ritual is not a category a diffuser competes in. A substitution nobody asked for is not a considered gift | — |

Question four: which room — and the free adjustment that decides whether they keep it
Size follows the room rather than the budget, and this is the step most often skipped. A 50ml is built for anything up to about 150 sq ft — a bedroom, a bathroom, a home office — and runs 6–8 weeks. A 130ml is for above that: a living room, a kitchen, the open end of a flat, a joint family home where the drawing room is where everybody sits. It runs 14–18 weeks. Buying a 50ml for a large living room is the commonest sizing error and it produces the complaint that the fragrance is weak, when in fact it is simply under-sized for the volume of air it has been asked to fill.
Then the adjustment that costs nothing. Every SOSA bottle ships with six fibre reeds, and the reed count is the volume control. Six is full strength and belongs in a living room. Three or four is a bedroom. Two or three in a small bathroom will make a 50ml last close to three months rather than six to eight weeks. Fibre rather than rattan matters here, because rattan clogs in Indian humidity and produces the fade-then-nothing pattern people usually blame on the oil. Flip the reeds every three to five days for the brighter scents and every five to seven for the florals, and the bottle lifts again each time.
If the recipient is an older household, put three reeds in before you wrap it and say so when you hand it over, because nobody reads the insert. Older households consistently want fragrance quieter than the person buying it expects, and that mismatch — not scent selection — is why a well-chosen diffuser ends up in a cupboard. One buyer, Meera D. in Delhi, was worried Evening Calm would be too strong at night and found the opposite: soft and gentle and just there in the background. That is the target. Placement helps too: put it where air already moves, near a doorway or on a console in a hall, and keep it out of direct sun and away from the draught of a running split AC, which strips the top notes in days and leaves only the base.
The terminal answers, in order — and the honest gap
Every place this tree can end, ranked by how often it ends there. The last row is the branch that leaves the shop entirely, and it belongs on this page because it is true: for a first visit to elders, for the first Diwali after a wedding, and in any household where mithai simply is the form the greeting takes, sweets are correct and a diffuser is a substitution nobody asked for. Sweets in that setting are performing a ritual, and a bottle cannot perform a ritual.
| Buy | What it is | The branch that leads here | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Evening Calm 50ml ★ | Kashmir lavender and chamomile, 8.9, the softest in the range | You do not know their taste — which is most family branches | ₹799 |
| 2. Mountain Breeze 50ml | Himalayan pine, sage, Indian cedar — 9.4, the deepest woody | They are impossible to buy for, or the room is shared by two tastes | ₹849 |
| 3. Day & Night duo | Two 50ml bottles, bright and soft — two objects, not a boxed set | The gift is for a couple or a two-opinion household | ₹1,498 |
| 4. Morning Freshness 50ml | Malabar lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus — the cheapest reed we make | A kitchen, a bathroom, a small newer flat, or a tight number | ₹749 |
| 5. A 130ml reed, or Garden Bloom / Fresh Brew | The larger bottle at 14–18 weeks; or the two scents that need knowledge | A room above 150 sq ft; a confirmed floral lover; a coffee household | ₹799–₹1,349 |
| The two branches that are not products: the honest gap | Under ₹500 there is no reed diffuser and no machine — buy a jar candle at ₹379 or a ₹449 single and stop. And on a first visit to elders, or where sweets are the greeting, take the mithai. There is also no gift set, hamper, box, card, wrap, note or personalisation anywhere in the range | Said plainly rather than worked around | ₹379–₹474 / — |
Versailles
I wrote this as a tree because the letters I get in October are never about fragrance. They are about paralysis: a list of names, a number, and no confidence about which bottle goes where. Describing five scents beautifully does not help that reader at all. Removing four of them does.
The question that does most of the work is the third one, and it is worth being honest with yourself about it. Almost everybody thinks they know the recipient's taste and almost nobody has actually heard it stated. Inference from gender is the worst version of this and it is extremely common — a floral bought for a woman because she is a woman. Garden Bloom is the scent I am proudest of, and I still would not send it to somebody whose views on rose I had never heard. When I do not know, I send the lavender.
The two branches that end away from the shop matter more to me than the eight that do not. If your number is under ₹500 there is no reed diffuser for you and I am not going to invent one. If the house you are visiting expects sweets, take sweets. Everything we make is composed in Pune, alcohol-free and phthalate-free and tested through a monsoon, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
