Question two — do they work from home? Yes: Morning Freshness ₹749 or Mountain Breeze ₹849 — dry and cold registers suit a working room; warm gourmands do not.
Question three — have they said they dislike fragrance? If they dislike scented things, Mountain Breeze ₹849 reads as a material rather than a perfume. If they dislike fragrance full stop, buy something else.
All three answers no or unknown: Garden Bloom ₹799 at 50ml or ₹1,299 at 130ml. It is the least divisive thing we make.
2. Question one — do they host? If people arrive at their home regularly, the gift belongs at the entrance or in the room where everyone sits. Fresh Brew at ₹849 — Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla, 9.5 on our own internal scale — is the fullest presence we make and reads as cosy to almost everybody. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is the entrance version of the same idea.
3. Question two — do they work from home? A working room is experienced for nine hours at a stretch, which rules out sweetness. Morning Freshness at ₹749 — Malabar lemon, peppermint, Nilgiri eucalyptus — is cold and clarifying; Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is dry, grounding and has no sweetness in it at all.
4. Question three — have they ever said they dislike fragrance? Listen to the exact words. "I don't like scented things" usually means florals, sweetness and air fresheners, and Mountain Breeze often reaches those people because it reads as pine and cedar rather than as perfume. "I don't like fragrance" means buy something else, and I would take it at face value.
5. If two answers are yes, buy a duo. Someone who hosts and works at home has two kinds of room, which is exactly what a duo set at ₹1,498–₹1,598 is for. Two scents chosen for two rooms is the clearest evidence you thought about their house.
6. If every answer is no or unknown, buy Garden Bloom. ₹799 for 50ml, ₹1,299 for 130ml. British rose over night-blooming jasmine at 8.9 — presence without insistence, and the composition the fewest people actively dislike.
7. Choose the size by how long you want it to stay. 50ml runs 6–8 weeks and is the lighter gesture; 130ml runs 14–18 weeks and holds a room for a season. The bigger bottle is not louder — at the same six reeds it projects about the same.
8. Then ask the fourth question, which cancels the other three. Newborn, diagnosed scent sensitivity, asthma, a very small sealed room, or a household already running fragrance they chose themselves. Any of those and the answer is no bottle at all.

Part one — the three questions, and what each one actually tells you
The reason these three work is that each converts a fact you already possess into a room, and a room into a register. You are not deducing their taste; you are deducing the job the fragrance has to do. That is a far more reliable inference, and it is also more forgiving — a scent chosen for the right job will be tolerated even by somebody whose personal preference lies elsewhere, whereas a scent chosen for the wrong job irritates people who would otherwise have liked it. Fresh Brew in a bedroom and Evening Calm in a party is the same mistake twice, and both are avoidable in under a minute.
Morning Freshness₹749 · 9.0/10A working room has a different brief because of exposure time. Nine hours in the same air changes what is pleasant: warm gourmand notes that are lovely for an evening become cloying by mid-afternoon, and the registers that hold up are the dry, green and cold ones. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon, peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus — bright, cold and anti-floral, and it reads louder than its 9.0 because cold things always do. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is the grounded alternative for somebody who wants the room to feel settled rather than sharpened. Either is also a quiet gift for the person whose kitchen table has been an office since 2020 and who has never once thought of that room as a room.Part two — every combination of the three answers
All eight possible outcomes of the triage, with what each pattern tells you and the bottle it points to. Where two answers are yes, the honest recommendation is usually two bottles rather than a compromise between them.

| Yes | Yes | Yes | A working, hosting, sceptical household | Mountain Breeze 130ml, and stop there | ₹1,349 |
| The honest caveat: two rows on this table need a smaller bottle rather than a bigger one. If the recipient lives in a compact flat, or is the sort of person who opens windows because a room smells of anything at all, drop to Evening Calm at ₹799 — 8.9 and deliberately the softest thing we make — and suggest they start with four reeds rather than six. Reed count is the only real volume control there is, and taking two out is reversible in ten seconds. It is also worth saying that this table cannot see the thing that matters most, which is the fourth question in Part three. | |||||

Part three — the fourth question, which overrides all three
Before you buy anything the triage recommends, ask the question that can cancel it. Is there a newborn in the house, or anybody with a diagnosed fragrance sensitivity, asthma or a scent-triggered migraine? If so, the right gift is not a quieter bottle or a smaller size; it is something from another category entirely, given without explanation or apology. This is not a legal disclaimer bolted onto a sales page — it is the most common reason a well-chosen fragrance gift becomes an object somebody has to manage, and the giver almost never finds out, because nobody tells you your present is causing a headache. Ask a sibling, ask a spouse, or simply decide that the risk is not worth it in that household this year.
Three more circumstances where the triage output should be ignored. A very small sealed room — a windowless bathroom under about sixty square feet, or a box room with the door always shut — is a space where even Evening Calm at 8.9 becomes more than anybody wants, and the honest fix is fewer reeds or a different gift. A recipient who already runs home fragrance they chose themselves is somebody you would be handing a second opinion to; a scent they did not choose standing next to one they did is an awkward object rather than a present. And a recipient whose real wish is scent on demand — a room strong before guests arrive and quiet by eleven — cannot be served by any reed diffuser at any price, because the format is a constant passive background with no switch. For them the honest recommendation is an ultrasonic machine such as the Sukoon at ₹1,899, with timers, which is a different kind of gift and a slightly awkward one to give — it is equipment, and equipment implies a project.
There is one more failure that has nothing to do with the recipient and everything to do with the giving. A reed diffuser handed over with no instruction fails at a rate I find genuinely painful, because placement decides almost everything about how it performs. Put it in an alcove, behind a sofa or inside a cabinet and the fragrance pools within a foot of the glass; the room never receives it, and the recipient concludes the product was weak. Two sentences prevent that: stand it on a tray at roughly waist-to-chest height near a doorway or walkway, several feet clear of an AC vent, a fan or direct sunlight, and flip all six reeds once a week with gloves. Say it lightly, once, and then leave them to it. That is the difference between a gift that becomes part of a home and one that ends up in a cupboard with the reeds still in the wrapper.
Part four — the whole range, mapped to the triage
All five compositions with the answer that points to each, the room it belongs in and what it costs. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds — not an industry standard, not a concentration, and not a ranking of quality.

Versailles
The triage on this page came out of a shop counter, not a studio. Every December people arrive in front of five bottles with the same expression, and the sentence is nearly always identical: she is impossible to buy for. For a while I would ask what she likes, which was useless — nobody knows. Then I started asking whether she has people over, and the whole conversation changed. People cannot describe a preference they have never been asked about, but everybody can describe a Sunday.
What I like about the three questions is that they are all about the recipient's life rather than their character, so answering them does not require you to claim any intimacy you do not have. You can answer all three about a colleague you have never visited, from things they have mentioned in passing. And the answers point at a composition for a reason that holds up in a room: hosting rooms want presence at the door, working rooms want cold and dry, and a person who says they hate scented things usually means sweetness rather than smell.
The one thing I would ask you to keep is the fourth question. A house with a newborn, or somebody who gets headaches from fragrance, is a house where this gift becomes a small ongoing problem that nobody will ever mention to you. Ask before you buy; it takes one message. Everything we make is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
