Are essential oils safe in an ultrasonic diffuser? Not raw ones, in a SOSA unit. Essential and carrier oils are thick and do not mix with water, so they film over the plate and can clog and damage it. A water-based fragrance avoids that.

Water-based versus oil-based, in plain terms

A useful test in your head: would this pour cleanly into a glass of water and vanish, or would it float on top? If it floats, it will float on your diffuser plate too, and clog it.
Fill with clean, room-temperature water (filtered or RO in hard-water cities to avoid mineral white dust), never hot water. The mist is cool, with no heat, and it scents a room rather than purifying the air. One more honest point while we are here. A diffuser scents a room and adds a little humidity. It is not an air purifier and does not clean the air, whatever fragrance you use. Choose the water-based fragrance for the machine's sake, and enjoy it for the scent, not as a health device.
