Why not the coffee table? Because it sits below seated nose height and in the middle of a room where furniture blocks it, and it is the surface most likely to be knocked or cleared for guests.
Does it matter which side of the room? Yes. Put it on the side people actually sit, because output falls away with distance and does not turn corners, so the far side of a room gets very little.
Put it where people sit, not where it looks best
A living room is the room people most often get wrong, and the reason is that it is the room they decorate. The instinct is to place a diffuser where it looks best - centred on a coffee table, styled on a console beside a lamp, or on the television unit where the eye lands. The rule that actually matters is different: put it where people sit. Everything below follows from how a passive source works. Oil travels up the reeds and evaporates from their surface into the air immediately around them, so what you are doing is creating a gentle zone of fragrance around the bottle, which then moves only as fast as the air in the room moves - which, in a still living room, is very slowly. Start with height. Chest height or above, on a console, sideboard, shelf, mantel or bookcase. A source at knee level - which is what a coffee table or a low side table gives you - has furniture between it and everybody in the room, and it is releasing below the height of a seated nose. Raising the same bottle by half a metre changes how much of it anybody registers, at no cost. There is one exception worth knowing: in a room with a very high ceiling, warm fragranced air rises and a disproportionate share ends up above head height where nobody is, which argues for a higher source and more soft furnishing rather than a stronger one. Then position, and this is where the seating rule does the work. Output falls away with distance and does not turn corners, so a bottle placed on the far wall opposite the sofa is largely serving that wall. Put it within the seating area: on the console behind the sofa, the sideboard beside the armchairs, the shelf at the end of the seating group. If your living room has two distinct sitting zones - a sofa cluster and a separate reading corner, say - that is a hint that one source may not cover both, and two modest points placed apart will beat one turned up, because raising a source's output raises the level where it already is rather than extending its reach. Then draughts, which is the most expensive rule to break. Keep it away from any fan, any air conditioner, any open window and the swing of a door. Moving air across the reeds increases evaporation sharply, so a bottle that should run three to four months can empty in weeks, and while it does, most of what it releases is carried out of the room rather than filling it - you pay more and get less. If the only good-looking surface in the room is beside the AC, move the bottle to a less prominent surface on the far side and accept a quieter result; that is the better trade every time. Now the three surfaces that fail specifically, all of them popular. The coffee table fails on three counts at once: it is below seated nose height, it sits in the middle of a furniture cluster that blocks the release in every direction, and it is the first surface cleared when guests arrive, which means the bottle spends the evening in a cupboard on precisely the occasion it was bought for. The television unit fails because it is usually on the wall everybody faces away from, so the source is behind the room rather than in it, and because it is very often the wall with the air conditioner and the socket cluster. The windowsill fails twice over: direct sun warms and degrades the oil, and outdoor air exchange carries most of what evaporates straight out, so you are funding fragrance for the street. On strength, three reeds is usually right for a living room, and it is worth resisting the urge to go higher. In most flats the entrance bottle is already contributing to this space, because the hall and the living area are often the same continuous air, so the living room source is topping up rather than starting from nothing. And you cannot judge the result yourself: everybody adapts to their own background within about an hour, so the only accurate reading anybody gets is a visitor's, in the first few seconds after your front door opens. If in doubt, run fewer reeds - a room slightly quieter than you intended costs almost nothing, while one that is louder is noticed by everybody except you. Garden Bloom at Rs 799 or Morning Freshness at Rs 749 suit a living room you want to read fresh; Evening Calm at Rs 799 suits one you want to read settled. Rotate the reeds every week or two, dry end down, and pull one out in April and put it back in October, since evaporation rises with temperature. And keep the living room on the same register as the rest of the flat, because it opens onto the hall and two scents meeting in a doorway read as something being slightly wrong rather than as variety.
The seating line, and the three surfaces that fail
The seating line, and the three surfaces that fail. Height: chest height or above, on a console, sideboard, shelf, mantel or bookcase, since a source at knee level has furniture between it and everybody and releases below seated nose height. Position: inside the seating area rather than on the far wall opposite it, because output falls away with distance and does not turn corners - and if the room has two distinct sitting zones, two modest points placed apart beat one turned up. Draughts: away from any fan, air conditioner, open window or door swing, since moving air across the reeds empties a three to four month bottle in weeks while carrying most of it out of the room; if the only good surface is beside the AC, use a less prominent one on the far side. The three surfaces that fail are the coffee table, which is low, blocked by furniture and the first thing cleared when guests arrive; the television unit, usually on the wall everybody faces away from and often beside the AC; and the windowsill, where sun degrades the oil and outdoor exchange carries it out. Three reeds is usually right, since the entrance bottle is often already contributing to this space - Garden Bloom at Rs 799 or Morning Freshness at Rs 749 to read fresh, or Evening Calm at Rs 799 to read settled, or the SOSA Boond at Rs 799 on a narrow console. Keep the living room on the same register as the rest of the flat, since it opens onto the hall and two scents meeting in a doorway read as something being slightly wrong. Rotate the reeds fortnightly with the dry end down, and pull one out in April and replace it in October. When in doubt run fewer reeds, since you adapt to your own home within about an hour and only a visitor reads it accurately. Never scented: the kitchen at any time, children's rooms, covered balconies. Everything is alcohol-free and made to IFRA-compliant standards.

Versailles
Most customer gifts are bought to be handed over, not to be kept: the sweet box is finished by the family that evening, the keychain joins a drawer, the branded pen was never really a gift at all. Then the moment that cost your business lakhs to create - the new car, the new home, the big purchase - is remembered with nothing. A fragrance gift keeps that moment alive, because scent is the sense wired closest to memory: months later, your customer is still in the middle of the experience you gave them.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles and everything we make is built for Indian lives - car diffusers that survive a Mumbai summer, reed diffusers that hold through the monsoon, alcohol-free formulas safe to gift across every customer profile. If you run a dealership, a project, a hotel, a showroom or a team, message the bulk desk on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - tell me the customer moment and the volumes, and I will help you design the programme myself. The business conversations are my favourite kind: one good gifting programme teaches me more about a category than a year of retail orders.
And a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali - so your customer gift quietly gives twice. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
Facts verified August 2026: Olfactory memory research shows scent-linked memories are unusually durable and emotionally vivid, which is why a used-daily fragrance gift sustains brand association in a way consumable or novelty gifts do not; customer-experience research consistently finds that peak moments (delivery, possession, checkout) disproportionately shape how the whole purchase is remembered. Fragrance preference is personal: volume gifting programmes should default to gentle fresh, green and lightly floral registers, and to space formats (diffusers, reeds, car fragrance) rather than skin perfume. SOSA range: Hotel Collection ultrasonic fragrance from Rs 299; car perfumes from Rs 449 (spray and hanging, alcohol-free); attars Nawaab, Ameeri, Mastani and Adaa from Rs 379 (3ml/6ml/12ml, alcohol-free); Attar Trio from Rs 1,055; perfumes from Rs 499; reed diffusers from Rs 749; Boond Rs 799, Sukoon Rs 1,799 and Megh Rs 3,499 ultrasonic diffusers; SOSA Safar waterless car and travel diffuser Rs 3,999 (rechargeable, three hotel-inspired scents included); SOSA Vaayu waterless scent machine Rs 11,999 (~1000m³, app + timer).
