This question is usually asked as a marketing question and it is really a placement question. You do not choose where a customer first notices the air; you choose where the machine stands, and the room decides the rest.
Quick answers — read this first
Where should a customer first notice the scent? A few steps inside the door, not on the threshold. The air within a metre or two of an entrance is churned and exchanged constantly, so nothing you release there stays long enough to register as anything. Once a customer is three or four paces in, they are standing in air the room actually holds, and that is the first honest point of contact. Put the machine on that air path and the first encounter happens by itself - no announcement, no arrival note, nothing to name.

Should it be a distinct moment or just there? Just there. The correct experience is noticing a room that is looked after, not noticing a fragrance - and that difference is entirely a matter of level. A designed olfactory moment at the entrance is a hotel-lobby idea that transplants badly into a boutique selling mechanical objects, because it draws attention to itself at the precise second you want attention going to the cases and to the person greeting the customer.

What does it cost to place this properly? Nothing beyond the machine, which is the point. One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a boutique from about 1,500 sq ft, positioned on the circulation path and run low. Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. Placement is free; it just takes an afternoon of walking in from the street and moving the unit a metre at a time.
The short answer
Short answer: a few steps inside the door, past the turbulence of the threshold, where the room's air is actually held. Place the single source on that air path rather than at the entrance and the first encounter happens by itself - as a change of state rather than as a fragrance. One Vaayu (₹11,999) from about 1,500 sq ft, one Sukoon (₹1,899) below 750.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) set several metres in from the entrance on the route customers walk, held at a low setting - or one SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) in a single-room boutique.
Next step: send a floor plan marked with the door, the greeting position and the air-conditioning supply and return points, and we will mark where the source should stand - Ask for a retail scenting plan.

Straight answer
Where should a customer first encounter a watch store's signature scent?
A few steps inside, and I mean that literally rather than poetically. The air immediately inside an entrance is the least stable air in the building - it is being pushed by the door, pulled by the pressure difference with the corridor or street, and usually crossed by an air-conditioning supply aimed at the opening. Anything released into it is diluted and gone before a person has finished walking through it. Three or four paces further in, that turbulence dies away and the room starts to hold its own air. That is the first place a customer can genuinely register anything, so that is where placement should aim. In practice this means standing the single source on the circulation path several metres in from the entrance, at a height where it is in moving air rather than tucked behind a display, and away from a return grille that would draw the output straight out of the room. Nothing else is needed: from that one position the room produces its own gradient, clearest near the machine and quieter with distance, and the entrance takes whatever reaches it. There is a second half to the answer that matters more than the geography. What a customer should first encounter is a room that has been looked after, not a fragrance they can name - if the thought that forms is a fragrance thought, the level is wrong regardless of where the machine stands. A scripted arrival moment is a hotel idea, and it transplants badly into a boutique, because it pulls attention to the air at exactly the second you want it going to the cases and to the person saying good morning. Set the level for the advisor who breathes it nine hours a day, six days a week, not for the customer who is in it for forty minutes; if the team says it is too much, it is too much, because they hold the only real measurement in the building. Finding the point is a task, not a theory: walk in from the street after a fifteen-minute break, note where you first register the room, and if that point is on the mat, move the machine further in or turn it down. Hardware is the last decision. From about 1,500 sq ft, or once there is an entrance lobby and a lounge to carry, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, waterless and under 38dB, on the app timer through trading hours. Under about 750 sq ft, one SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899, and a Vaayu would be the wrong buy. One machine either way. This is a presentation decision like lighting or seating, it is never a mask for another smell and never a substitute for ventilation, and no one can promise you it moves a business number. Ask for a retail scenting plan and send your floor plan.
A few steps inside, past the door's turbulence, where the room's air begins. Aim the placement there, hold one low setting, and let the entrance take whatever reaches it.
One SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 for a boutique past about 1,500 sq ft - waterless, under 38dB, wall or HVAC mountable so the source can sit in moving air several metres in from the door rather than on a shelf by the entrance. Below 750 sq ft, the Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest buy.

The machine, and where to stand it

One machine, and the decision worth an afternoon is its position rather than its price. The images link through to the product pages so you can check the specifications first.

SOSA Vaayu
Boutiques past about 1,500 sq ft
SOSA Vaayu
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, auto-stop and key-lock. Freestanding, wall or HVAC mounted, which is what lets you put the source into moving air well inside the room.

SOSA Sukoon
Under about 750 sq ft - buy this instead
SOSA Sukoon
Ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft, supplied with three 15ml fragrances. In a one-room boutique the placement logic is identical - set back from the door, in the room's own air - and a Vaayu at six times the price would be covering a fraction of what it is rated for.
From ₹1,899
SOSA Vaayu
The machine that lets you choose where the room begins
SOSA Vaayu
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank running 90+ days a fill, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml and further supply should be confirmed with SOSA.

How to find the point yourself, in an afternoon

This is a walking exercise rather than a calculation, and three passes will settle it for good.

1
Walk in cold, three times
Your nose adapts in twenty minutes, so the test has to start outside
Stand outside for a quarter of an hour, then walk in at normal pace and note the exact point where you first register the room. Do it three times across a trading day, because the door traffic and the air-conditioning load change through the afternoon. If you register it on the mat, the source is too far forward or the setting is too high; if you get to the middle of the floor before anything, it is too far back or too low. The target is three or four paces in, and the thought you want is a room that is cared for rather than a fragrance you could describe.
Tip: Send a member of staff who has been off for two days to do the same walk. Their reading is better than yours.
SOSA Vaayu
One Vaayu ₹11,999, set once and left alone, is the whole hardware side of this.

2
Move the machine, not the dial
Position is the free adjustment; intensity is the expensive one
When the first encounter lands in the wrong place, the instinct is to change the setting. Move the unit a metre first. Distance from the source is the most powerful control you have and it costs nothing, whereas raising the intensity changes the entire floor to fix one spot. A wall or HVAC mount is worth considering here, because a source in moving air distributes further at a lower setting than the same source sitting on a cabinet in a still corner. Only once the position is settled should the level be set, and then it should be left alone behind the key-lock.
Tip: Mark the final position on the floor plan so a new manager does not quietly relocate it.

3
Judge it as a room, not as a scent
If the first thought is a fragrance thought, the level is wrong
The test I trust is what a person says afterwards. "It smells nice in here" means the level is too high - the air has become a subject. "It feels like a proper shop" or nothing at all means it is right. This sounds like a small distinction and it is the whole difference between a boutique that reads as considered and one that reads as merchandised. A customer naming the fragrance is a reading, not a compliment, and the correction is always downward. Anyone on the floor should also be able to switch it off in seconds without asking permission, and a customer who mentions sensitivity is answered by turning it down or off.
SOSA Vaayu
Lower is nearly always the right correction.

The SOSA principle
You do not choose the point where a customer first meets the air - the room does, at the line where the door's turbulence ends, and your only real control is how far back from that line the single source stands.
Which is why placement is an afternoon of walking in from the street, and intensity is the thing you touch last.
SOSA Vaayu
Set back, not set louder: SOSA Vaayu placed several metres in from the door does at a low setting what no threshold placement does at any setting. ₹11,999.

The plan, step by step

Here is the same answer as a sequence of paces, which is how a customer actually experiences it.

The SOSA plan
What happens at each step in from the street
The step What to do
On the mat
Nothing designed. This air is exchanged constantly and no setting holds anything here.
One to two paces in
Still turbulent. If this is where you first register the room, turn the level down or move the source further back.
SOSA VaayuThree to four paces in
The point of first encounter. The single source sits on this air path, on the circulation route, away from a return grille.
The open showroom floor
The zone the level is set for, judged by the advisor who breathes it all day.
Consultation seating and lounge
Reads quieter because it is further from the source, which is the correct outcome and needs no second machine.
SOSA SukoonA single-room boutique
One Sukoon at ₹1,899, set back from the door on the same principle.

If you are wondering whether the threshold should simply be turned up instead, that argument is settled in whether the entrance should smell stronger than the rest of the store. And once the first encounter is placed, the rest of the route is a matter of consistency, which is worked through in how to create a consistent sensory journey through a luxury watch boutique. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel.

SOSA Vaayu
Mounted into moving air: Wall or HVAC mounting distributes from one source further than a cabinet-top unit in a still corner. ₹11,999.
One source, placed with care
SOSA Vaayu ₹11,999 covers up to 1000m³ - enough that placement, not power, becomes the decision.
See the SOSA Vaayu Book a scenting plan
I would rather a customer register the room four paces in and never think about it again than notice a fragrance on the mat and still be carrying that thought when they reach the case.

The SOSA watch-boutique specification

Two machines cover almost every watch boutique in the country, and which one you need is decided by floor size and air path rather than by ambition. Cold-air refill oil is not currently sold separately, so the 400ml supplied runs 90+ days a fill and continuity of supply should be confirmed with SOSA before a rollout. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Place first, set the level second, then leave it behind the key-lock. Ambient scent here is a presentation decision like lighting or case layout; it is never a mask for another smell and never a substitute for ventilation or cleaning; and no one can promise you it moves footfall, dwell, conversion or spend - a supplier quoting you a figure is selling. A note from Sonal

People ask me this expecting a marketing answer - a moment, a signature arrival, something a customer remembers. What I give them instead is a floor plan with a cross on it about four paces in from the door, and a request to walk in from the street three times before they accept it. The disappointment is usually brief, because the walk settles the argument faster than any explanation of mine does.

The reason it lands there rather than at the entrance is simply that the entrance is not holding air. Doors churn, corridors push, air-conditioning supplies blow across openings. A few steps further in, the room quietens and starts to keep what you put into it. Put your one source in that quiet air and every part of the store downstream of it inherits the same profile, at a level that falls off naturally with distance. That falling-off is the journey people ask me to design, and it designs itself as long as there is only one source in the volume.

On hardware: under 750 sq ft, a Sukoon at ₹1,899 and no more. From about 1,500 sq ft, one Vaayu at ₹11,999, waterless, under 38dB, key-locked, timed to trading hours and mounted wherever the air actually moves. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Where should customers first encounter a signature scent in a watch store?
A few steps inside the entrance, past the turbulence at the door, where the room starts to hold its own air. Place the single source on the circulation path several metres in and the first encounter happens there by itself. The threshold is exchanged too often to hold anything, so aiming placement at it produces a heavy showroom and a doorway that still smells of the street.
Should the first impression be a designed moment?
No. What a customer should first encounter is a room that has clearly been looked after, not a fragrance they could name. A scripted arrival note pulls attention to the air at the exact second you want it going to the cases and to whoever is greeting them. If someone says it smells nice in here, the level is too high; the correct reading is that the shop feels properly kept.
How do I find the right point in my own store?
Stand outside for fifteen minutes, walk in at normal pace, and note where you first register the room. Repeat three times across a trading day because door traffic and air-conditioning load change. If you notice it on the mat, move the machine further in or lower the setting. Better still, ask a staff member returning from two days off to do the same walk, since their nose is not adapted.
Should I change the setting or move the machine?
Move the machine first. Distance from the source is the most powerful control available and it costs nothing, while raising intensity alters the entire floor to correct one spot. A wall or HVAC mount often helps because a source in moving air distributes further at a lower setting than the same unit on a cabinet in a still corner. Set the level only once the position is settled.
What machine and what does it cost?

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the planning advice applies to any brand.

Facts verified 5 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, described by the manufacturer as approximately 2,000-3,000 sq ft, with adjustable intensity, a 400ml refillable tank lasting 90+ days a fill depending on intensity and run hours, Bluetooth app and button control, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, operation under 38dB at 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mounting, auto-stop and key-lock, and CE, RoHS and SGS certification, which are electrical and compliance marks and not medical approvals. Being waterless, it adds no moisture and leaves no residue on surfaces or equipment. The SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899) is an ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser covering roughly 270-320 sq ft and is supplied with three 15ml fragrances; the water-based Hotel Collection (₹299 / ₹999 / ₹1,799) is an ultrasonic fragrance and is not a refill for a waterless cold-air machine. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free and phthalate-free, with 50ml lasting about 6-8 weeks and 130ml about 14-18 weeks. Cold-air refill oil for the Vaayu is not currently sold separately - the machine ships with 400ml included and further refills should be confirmed with SOSA. Warranty, annual maintenance, installation and bulk terms are not published and should be confirmed before ordering. Ambient scent is an interior and hospitality decision: it makes no clinical, therapeutic or wellbeing claim, it works alongside proper ventilation, cleaning and infection control and is never a substitute for any of them, it is never used to mask another smell, and no claim is made that fragrance influences a patient's decision or any commercial outcome. Clinical areas including procedure, post-procedure and photography rooms are left unscented, and the treating clinician's judgement overrides any scenting plan in their own room.
