Founder Diaries · Fragrance Projection · Onset and Persistence
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Two disclosures before the comparison, because both change how you should read it. The first: SOSA does not sell a room spray or a home spray of any kind. Every spray we make is a car perfume. So when I compare a spray against a reed diffuser and a waterless machine below, I am comparing categories, not products on my own shelf, and I have nothing to gain from where the spray column lands. The second: nobody can promise you what a guest will do or say, and I am not going to imply it in a comparison table. What a table can honestly compare is two specifications that people persistently collapse into one word: onset, how quickly a scent appears in a space, and persistence, whether it is still there three hours later at the same level. Almost no format is good at both, and the one that is has a switch.
Quick answers — read this first
A room spray is all onset and almost no persistence. It puts droplets into the air immediately and they fall out of it just as fast. It is a manual act that has to be repeated, which is why it never survives an evening. SOSA does not sell one — every SOSA spray is a car perfume.

A reed diffuser is all persistence and no onset. It cannot be started, because it has been running for weeks. Constant, low, unattended: 6–8 weeks on a 50ml at ₹849, 14–18 on a 130ml. No propulsion, no control.

A waterless cold-air diffuser gives you both, at a rate you set. Pressurised air atomises undiluted oil, so it establishes quickly and then keeps emitting at a chosen intensity until a timer stops it. Safar ₹3,999 at personal scale; Vaayu ₹11,999 for a large home.

For a normal Indian living room the sized answer is neither of the waterless units. It is the Sukoon at ₹1,899 — 270–320 sq ft, a fan, a remote and steady/2H/4H timers. Safar is built for a car or a desk; Vaayu is built for a whole floor.
The short answer
Short answer: if you want a scent that appears quickly and holds through an evening, you want an active source with a timer, not a spray and not a third reed bottle. For 270–320 sq ft that is the Sukoon at ₹1,899. Keep a reed diffuser running underneath it as the constant baseline; that combination is what most hosting homes settle on, and it is cheaper than the mistake of buying a bigger bottle.
The mechanism: onset is set by how fast a format puts fragrance into the air, persistence by whether it keeps doing so. A spray delivers a large dose in one act and then stops. A reed diffuser delivers a small dose continuously and never stops. A machine delivers a chosen dose continuously and stops when you tell it to.
Straight answer
Spray, reed diffuser or waterless machine — which one is better, and at what?
1. Start with the gap, so you can weigh the rest properly: SOSA sells no room spray. Not a small one, not a discontinued one — none. Every SOSA spray is a car perfume, and a car is a very small sealed volume, not a living room. If a spray is what you decide you want, you are buying it elsewhere, and I would rather say that plainly than steer you towards something of mine that does a different job.

2. A spray wins on onset and loses on everything else. One act puts a comparatively large quantity of fragrance into the air at once, which is why it feels effective. Droplets then settle out of the air, and the level falls away. It has no rate; it has events. Which means the only way to maintain it across an evening is to keep repeating it, in front of your guests, which is exactly what most hosts are trying to escape.

3. A reed diffuser wins on persistence and does not compete on onset at all. It cannot be turned on because it never turned off. The plateau it reaches after the first couple of weeks holds to the end of the bottle: 6–8 weeks on a 50ml at ₹749–₹849, 14–18 weeks on a 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349. There is no fan, no heat and no switch anywhere in it, and it relies entirely on your room's air movement to distribute anything.

4. A waterless cold-air diffuser is the only one of the three with both specifications. Pressurised air shears undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist, so it establishes a level relatively quickly, then holds that level at whatever intensity you set until a timer stops it. Safar at ₹3,999 is this at personal scale — cordless, 20ml, about 6.9cm, three speeds, 1/2/3-hour auto-off, up to 10 hours continuous. Vaayu at ₹11,999 is it at building scale, up to 1000m³.

5. Neither waterless unit is the right size for a normal living room, and I will not pretend otherwise. Safar is built for a car, a desk, a bedside or a small room; Vaayu is built for a large home or a connected floor. The product that actually fits a 270–320 sq ft living room is the ultrasonic Sukoon at ₹1,899, which has a fan behind a water-diluted mist, a remote and steady/2H/4H timers.

6. The Vaayu refill gap, stated rather than buried: SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu cold-air refill oil. The 400ml supplied in the box is the fragrance available at the time of writing, the water-based Hotel Collection must never be used in it, and anyone who needs long-term supply should confirm availability with us before ordering.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C summer heat and 85% monsoon humidity, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: spray = onset without persistence, and SOSA does not sell one. Reed diffuser = persistence without onset, from ₹749. Waterless cold-air = both, at a rate you set, but Safar is personal-scale and Vaayu is whole-floor scale. For an ordinary living room the honest purchase is the Sukoon at ₹1,899 with reeds running underneath it.
SOSA Mountain Breeze reed diffuser with six fibre reeds
The persistence end of the comparison, at its cleanest
SOSA Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml
Dry, resinous and grounded — a composition that holds its shape across a long plateau rather than opening loudly and fading. 9.4 on SOSA's own internal strength scale at six reeds, which is a position on our scale rather than an industry standard or a concentration. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, on a heat-stable CCT carrier with six fibre reeds; rattan is avoided because its pores clog in Indian humidity. 50ml runs 6–8 weeks, 130ml ₹1,349 runs 14–18 at the same emission rate. Best in bedrooms, home offices and libraries.

Part one — onset and persistence, format by format

"Immediate impact" is a single phrase covering two different demands, and every disappointing purchase I hear about comes from buying for one and needing the other. Onset is how quickly a format raises the level in a space. Persistence is whether the level is still there hours later without further intervention. Judge all three formats on both and the picture becomes almost boringly clear.

1
ROOM SPRAY · MAXIMUM ONSET, MINIMUM PERSISTENCE
An event rather than a rate — and not something SOSA makes at all
A spray delivers its whole dose in a second or two, which is genuinely useful and genuinely misleading. It feels like the most powerful option on the shelf because the change is instant and large. What it has no mechanism for is staying: airborne droplets settle onto surfaces, the level falls, and there is no source left in the room continuing to emit. The only way to hold a level with a spray is to keep performing the act, which turns your evening into a series of interruptions. I should be explicit again, since this is the format people most often assume we sell: SOSA has no room spray and no home spray. Our sprays are car perfumes, made for a sealed volume the size of a cabin. Recommending one for a living room would be dishonest, so I do not.
Where it does earn its place: a genuinely momentary need in a very small space. It is a patch, never a scheme.
2
REED DIFFUSER · NO ONSET, MAXIMUM PERSISTENCE
It cannot be started, because it has not stopped since you opened it
Oil climbs six fibre reeds by capillary action and evaporates from the exposed length, continuously, for weeks. There is no switch and no fan; distribution is delegated entirely to the room's own air movement. The curve is worth knowing: a spike in the first days as dry reeds saturate and the lightest notes leave, a settle over the following weeks, then a long flat plateau that holds to the end of the bottle. That plateau is the product, and the plateau is why a reed diffuser scores zero on onset — the level was set a fortnight ago. For a constant background in a bedroom, study or reading corner it is unbeatable value at ₹749–₹849 for 6–8 weeks. For an evening that needs to be different from the previous fifty evenings, it is structurally incapable of helping, and adding a second bottle to the same room does not change that.
The free lever it does have: flipping all six reeds raises emission for a few days. Do it earlier in the day, not as the doorbell rings.
3
WATERLESS COLD-AIR · ONSET AND PERSISTENCE, AT A SET RATE
The only one of the three where you choose the level and the duration
SOSA Vaayu waterless cold-air diffuser with app and timersWaterless Vaayu₹11,999 · up to 1000m³Pressurised air is driven across a nozzle and shears neat fragrance oil into a dry nano-mist — no water, no heat, no residue. Because the oil is undiluted and the particles are very fine, the level in the served volume comes up briskly and then holds while the machine runs, at whatever intensity you have chosen, until a timer stops it. That is onset and persistence in the same object, which is the specification a host actually wants. The honest part is scale. The Safar at ₹3,999 is a cordless 20ml unit about 6.9cm tall with three speeds and a 1/2/3-hour auto-off — superb on a desk, a bedside, in a car or a hotel room, and not a living-room device. The Vaayu at ₹11,999 covers up to about 2,000–3,000 sq ft with app control and 1/4/8/24-hour timers, and there is currently no separate cold-air refill oil sold for it.

Part two — the same evening, seen through both specifications

Four formats, two specifications, and a column that most comparison pages would quietly leave out. The starred row is the one I would actually buy for a living room, and it is not the most expensive.

Onset against persistence · with the honest availability column
How fast it appears, whether it lasts, and what happens when it stops
Format Onset Persistence across an evening When it stops Does SOSA sell it?
Ultrasonic machine, 500ml ★ Establishes while you get ready, on a timer Holds at a set rate — 16–18 hours on low Level falls back to whatever the reeds are doing Yes — Sukoon ₹1,899, 270–320 sq ft
Room spray Immediate, and large for a moment None — droplets settle and the level falls It has already stopped; you repeat the act No. Every SOSA spray is a car perfume
Reed diffuser 50ml / 130ml None — it has been running for weeks Total, and unchanged by the occasion It does not stop until the bottle empties Yes — ₹749–₹1,349, 6–8 or 14–18 weeks
Waterless cold-air, personal scale Brisk within a small volume Holds while running; 1/2/3-hour auto-off Stops cleanly, no residue Yes — Safar ₹3,999, car, desk or bedside
Waterless cold-air, large scale Brisk across a large connected volume Holds at chosen intensity; 1/4/8/24-hour timers Stops cleanly, key-lock and auto-stop Yes — Vaayu ₹11,999, 2,000–3,000 sq ft
The honest caveat: this table compares mechanisms, not outcomes — no row of it says anything about how a person will respond, and no product in any column can. Two further honest points. An ultrasonic works by aerosolising water, so it adds moisture to a room by design; a reed diffuser adds none. And SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu cold-air refill oil — the 400ml in the box is the fragrance available at the time of writing, the water-based Hotel Collection must never be substituted, and long-term supply should be confirmed with us before you commit ₹11,999.

Persistence, both specifications at a normal price, and the large-home machine
The SOSA principle
Ask which format is strongest and you get an argument. Ask which is fastest and which lasts, separately, and you get an answer. A spray is an event, a reed diffuser is a constant, and a machine is a rate you choose — and only one of those three can be scheduled around an evening.
Which is why the useful question is not "how strong" but "for how long, and starting when".

Part three — replacing a repeated act with a rate

There is a pattern I see in almost every household that reaches for a spray before guests arrive, and it is not really about fragrance. It is that the household has substituted a habit for a system. Somebody remembers, somebody sprays, somebody sprays again an hour later because the first one has gone, and the whole thing depends on a person being attentive at the right moments during an evening they are supposed to be enjoying. A source with a rate removes the person from the loop. That is the actual upgrade, and it has nothing to do with the oil being better.

Which is where I should talk you out of a purchase rather than into one, because the free version of this fix is real and most readers have not tried it. If your reed diffuser is the only source you own and the room reads as empty, the problem is almost never the composition. Move the bottle into the room people occupy rather than the passage they cross. Raise it to waist-to-chest height and give it a hand's width of clearance from the wall. Take it out of the line of an AC vent, a fan, an open window or direct sun — a draught is doubly punishing, because it strips the reeds so the bottle empties weeks early and carries fragrance out of the room instead of around it. Flip all six reeds with gloves. Close the doors of rooms you are not scenting, and shut the balcony door an hour before people arrive. If that fixes it, you have saved ₹1,899 and I would rather you did.

If it does not fix it, buy the rate — and buy it at the right size, which is the part people get wrong at this price point. A normal Indian living room of roughly 250–320 sq ft is a Sukoon at ₹1,899: 500ml, 16–18 hours on low, remote, steady/2H/4H timers, three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances in the box. A study or single bedroom of about 150 sq ft is a Boond at ₹899. A desk, a bedside or a car is a Safar at ₹3,999. A genuinely large home or a connected floor is a Vaayu at ₹11,999, with the refill position confirmed with us first. And what almost nobody needs is the Megh at ₹3,499 for coverage: 6 litres and about 100 hours of runtime, but only about 215 sq ft — less than the ₹1,899 Sukoon covers. It is bought for runtime and humidity, or it is not bought.

A spray is something you do; a reed diffuser is something you have; a machine is something you schedule. Most hosts describe wanting the third and go on buying the first.

Part four — which specification you actually need

Seven wants, phrased the way people actually phrase them, mapped to the specification underneath and then to a product or to nothing at all. Two rows resolve to zero rupees.

Say what you want, get the specification
What you want · the specification underneath · the honest answer · cost
What you say you want The specification underneath The honest answer Cost

"I keep spraying and it keeps disappearing" You are buying onset and needing persistence Replace the act with a rate — any timed source will do it ₹899–₹1,899
"Something quick for a desk, a bedside or the car" Onset in a small sealed volume Safar, 20ml and 6.9cm — right for personal space, wrong for a hall ₹3,999
"A large villa or a connected floor plan" Persistence across a volume no passive source can reach Vaayu — and read the refill note before you order ₹11,999
"I want a SOSA room spray" Onset, from a product that does not exist here We do not make one. Every SOSA spray is a car perfume — buy a timed source instead ₹0 from us
Honest notes for buyers: SOSA sells no room spray or home spray; every SOSA spray is a car perfume, and no comparison here should be read as a recommendation of a spray we stock. A diffuser of any type adds fragrance to a room — it does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, smoke or damp smells, or reduce humidity. Find the source, extract or ventilate, then add fragrance. Ultrasonic machines add moisture because their carrier is water; reed diffusers and cold-air machines add none. SOSA has no 100ml reed diffuser; sizes are 50ml and 130ml, and a larger bottle buys weeks rather than reach. Replacement reeds are not sold separately, so an oil refill at 300ml ₹2,399 or 500ml ₹3,499 is oil only. Reed oil never goes in a machine; the water-based Hotel Collection (15ml ₹299 · 100ml ₹999 · 300ml ₹1,799) never goes in a reed bottle or a Vaayu, and SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu cold-air refill oil. Megh 6L at ₹3,499 covers about 215 sq ft, less than a Sukoon, and is a runtime and humidity machine rather than a coverage upgrade. Nothing here promises that anyone will notice or comment on a fragrance. Free shipping above ₹499; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

It ships with four Hotel Collection cold-air fragrances at 100ml each. The gap, stated plainly: SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu refill oil. A note from Sonal

People are sometimes surprised that we do not make a room spray. It would be the easiest product in the catalogue to add and probably the fastest to sell. The reason we have not is that a spray answers a question about the next thirty seconds and almost every question I actually receive is about the next three hours. I did not want a product on the shelf whose main function was to be used again ten minutes later.

Splitting the comparison into onset and persistence came out of a long run of conversations that all ended the same way. Someone would describe spraying before guests arrived, being pleased, and then finding the room flat by the time everyone sat down. That is not a failure of the fragrance. It is a format doing exactly what its mechanism allows and nothing more.

So when I am asked which of the three is best, I answer with two columns instead of one winner, and I tell people which column they are actually shopping in. Usually it is persistence with a start time, which is a machine, and usually the right machine is the cheapest one that fits the room rather than the most impressive one on the page. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune; a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Does SOSA sell a room spray?
No. SOSA sells no room spray and no home spray of any kind — every SOSA spray is a car perfume, made for the small sealed volume of a car cabin. This page compares the spray category against reed diffusers and waterless machines so you can decide honestly; it is not steering you towards a spray of ours, because there isn't one.
Which lasts longer through an evening — a reed diffuser or a machine?
Both hold, but differently. A reed diffuser holds at a fixed low level you cannot change, indefinitely, until the bottle empties — 6–8 weeks on a 50ml, 14–18 on a 130ml. A machine holds at a level you choose for as long as you run it, then stops. If the evening needs to be different from an ordinary Tuesday, only the second one can do that.
Is a waterless diffuser better than an ultrasonic one?
They are different mechanisms with different trade-offs. Waterless cold-air nebulises undiluted oil on a pressurised air path — dry, residue-free, no moisture added. Ultrasonic aerosolises a water-and-fragrance mix and pushes it out with a small fan, so it adds moisture by design and the fragrance travels diluted. For a normal living room the ultrasonic Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the sized product; the waterless units in our range sit either side of that room size, not on it.
Can I just add more reeds instead of buying a machine?
You can raise emission that way — emission is governed by exposed reed surface area — and it costs bottle life roughly in proportion: nine reeds on a 50ml is about five weeks instead of eight. But it changes the level near the bottle, not the distribution across the room, and it still cannot be turned on or off. If what you want is a different level on particular evenings, extra reeds are not the mechanism for it.
What is the cheapest honest way to get both onset and persistence?
A timed active source in the room that needs it, with a reed diffuser running underneath as the baseline. For about 150 sq ft that is the Boond at ₹899; for 270–320 sq ft it is the Sukoon at ₹1,899. Before you buy either, though, do the free things: move and raise the bottle, flip all six reeds, and shut the balcony door well before people arrive.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, comparing three home fragrance categories on onset and persistence. SOSA sells no room spray or home spray; the spray column describes a category, not a SOSA product, and no competing product or brand is named, priced or rated anywhere. No claim is made or implied about how any guest will react, and no reaction is quantified. No temperature, humidity or air-quality figure is quoted for any city — the only test conditions stated are SOSA's own, 45°C and 85% relative humidity. Coverage, runtime and longevity figures are manufacturer specifications and typical ranges, not guarantees.

SOSA range, specifications and prices used in this guide (verified from the live store, August 2026): Reed diffusers — alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant compositions on a heat-stable coconut-derived (CCT) carrier, in a refillable glass bottle with six fibre reeds, flipped weekly. 50ml lasts 6–8 weeks, 130ml lasts 14–18 weeks; there is no 100ml reed diffuser size. SOSA does not currently sell a separate Vaayu cold-air refill oil; the 400ml supplied in the box is the fragrance available at the time of writing, and the water-based Hotel Collection must not be used in a Vaayu. Aangan ₹25,999 and Meenar ₹38,500 are commercial. The water-based Hotel Collection for ultrasonic machines is 15ml ₹299 · 100ml ₹999 · 300ml ₹1,799. SOSA sells no room spray or home spray — every SOSA spray is a car perfume. Below ₹749: jar candles ₹379, Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh candle ₹449, wax melts ₹474 (a burner is required and not included), mugs ₹474, bubble and taper candles ₹569, Amber Rose candle ₹599, ceramic trinket dish and candle two-pack ₹664. A reed diffuser or a diffuser adds fragrance to a room. It does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, smoke or damp smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels — and nothing here can promise that any guest will notice, comment on or remember a fragrance. Ventilate or extract first; add fragrance second. A persistent musty smell indicates moisture that needs finding and drying, and SOSA sells no dehumidifier or air purifier. How far a fragrance carries depends on emission rate, air movement, room volume, ceiling height, air exchange and soft furnishing; longevity and coverage figures are typical ranges and manufacturer specifications, not guarantees. Not noticing a constant fragrance is ordinary olfactory adaptation — the reliable checks are leaving the room and returning, or asking someone who has just arrived.
