Arera Colony is where Bhopal keeps its houses, and where a certain kind of business has moved into them - a boutique clinic on a ground floor, a salon behind a garden wall, a wealth office in what was somebody's drawing room. The customer arrives the way a guest arrives at a home. So the honest answer to what the place should smell like is not "a store" and not "a hotel" - it is a house that someone keeps well.
Quick answers — read this first
What should a premium customer-facing business around Arera Colony smell like? Like a well-kept home. The premises are residential in bone - a converted house, a ground floor under flats, a garden gate - and the customer reads them as a home first. The register that fits is dry and quiet: cedar, sage, a little tea and light woods in a wood-and-fabric interior, or a clean lemon-and-mint where the fit-out is white and glass. Nothing sweet, nothing powdery or floral, no oud. Held so low that the staff who breathe it all day have stopped noticing it.
Why not the scent a store or a hotel lobby uses? Because the customer did not come to a store or a hotel, and a store's level in a converted house reads as effort. A retail fragrance is built to be noticed across a large open floor in a few seconds; a residential-locality business hosts one customer at a time for a long stay, in rooms with doors. The level a lobby runs at is the commercial part, and it is the part to leave out. Restraint is what reads as establishment in a house.
What does that cost, honestly? Under about 750 sq ft of customer-facing space, one Mountain Breeze reed diffuser at Rs 849 on the reception sideboard, or a SOSA Sukoon at Rs 1,899, is the whole answer. From about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, one SOSA Vaayu at Rs 11,999 - waterless, on a 1h/4h/8h/24h timer, adjustable, key-locked. Between those sizes a Vaayu is bought for control and no water, never for coverage. SOSA makes no claim that any of this changes what a customer decides or pays; it is an interiors decision, like the lamps.
The short answer
Short answer: a well-kept home, not a store. The premises are residential in bone, the customer arrives as a guest, and the register that fits is dry and quiet - cedar, sage, tea and light woods, or lemon-and-mint against white and glass - held so low that your own staff have stopped noticing it. Nothing sweet, nothing floral, no oud, and never the level a hotel lobby runs at.
The pick: under about 750 sq ft, one Mountain Breeze reed diffuser (₹849) on the reception sideboard, or a SOSA Sukoon (₹1,899); from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) on a timer with the lock on. A white, glass-fronted fit-out swaps the reed for Morning Freshness (₹749).
Next step: send a floor plan with the gate, the entrance, the AC returns and every consultation or treatment room marked and we will tell you honestly which rooms carry nothing - ask for a Bhopal scenting plan.
What should a premium customer-facing business around Arera Colony smell like?
Like a house that someone keeps well. That is the whole answer, and everything else on this page is the reasoning behind it. Start with the premises themselves. A customer-facing business in Arera Colony is almost never a purpose-built shop: it is a converted bungalow, the ground floor of a residential building, a set of rooms behind a garden wall, with a gate, a short path, a door that was once a front door, and rooms that were once a drawing room and a study. The customer reads all of that in the first thirty seconds, without meaning to, and reads it as a home. So the register is decided before you choose anything - it has to be the smell of a well-kept house, not the smell of a store and not the smell of a hotel lobby. What does a well-kept house smell of? Mostly of nothing wrong: fresh air, clean floors, wood, paper, perhaps tea. In SOSA's range that is cedar, sage, a little tea and light woods - the Mountain Breeze reed on a sideboard, or the same dry register from a machine - or, where the fit-out has gone white and glass, a clean lemon-and-mint in Morning Freshness. What it is not is anything sweet, powdery or floral, which reads as a salon product rather than a house, and it is not oud, because SOSA makes no oud home fragrance and because a heavy oud becomes what the customer remembers instead of you. The second thing that sets the register is the visit. A store hosts hundreds of people for a few minutes each; a business here hosts one customer for an hour, or a family for an afternoon, in rooms with doors. A retail fragrance is built to be noticed across a large open floor in seconds. Here it would be noticed for an hour, which is a different thing entirely and not a good one. The level a store or a hotel lobby runs at is the commercial part, and it is the part you leave out. Set it for the customer who sits the longest and for the staff who breathe it nine hours a day: noticed at the door, forgotten by the sofa, un-nameable by anyone. Third, the map. The reception or lounge - the old drawing room, usually - carries the scent. Consultation rooms, treatment rooms, a clinic's clinical rooms, a salon's colour stations and a wealth office's meeting room carry nothing placed inside them; a small closed room over-scents in minutes and the customer inherits a trace through the door, which is the right amount. The entrance carries nothing, because a front door and a garden gate exchange their air constantly. And what to buy is decided by connected volume, not by how busy you are: under about 750 sq ft of customer-facing space, one Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 or a SOSA Sukoon at ₹1,899 is honestly the whole installation; from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor, one SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999, waterless, on a 1h/4h/8h/24h timer, adjustable and key-locked so the level cannot drift upward under many hands. Scent is an interiors decision, like lighting or seating: SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, conversion, sales, fees or any decision a customer, patient or client makes, and no claim about pain, anxiety, stress, mood or wellbeing. It is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning or extraction, and clinical, treatment and food areas stay unscented. Ask for a Bhopal scenting plan and we will mark up your rooms honestly, including the ones that should carry nothing.
A converted house should smell like a well-kept house: cedar, sage and tea in a wood-and-fabric interior, lemon-and-mint against white and glass, held so low that staff have stopped noticing. Never a store's level, never a hotel lobby's, nothing sweet, no oud. Reed or Sukoon under 750 sq ft; one Vaayu (Rs 11,999) from about 1,500 sq ft. No claim about what any customer decides.
For a residential-locality business under about 750 sq ft of customer-facing space, one Mountain Breeze reed diffuser on the reception sideboard - pine, sage and cedar, alcohol-free, nothing to plug in - at ₹849 is the honest whole answer. Larger, connected floors move to a Vaayu.
Two honest answers, decided by how much connected customer-facing floor you have and not by how affluent the customer is. The images link to the product pages so every figure here can be checked directly.
Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar - the driest register SOSA makes and the one that reads as a well-kept house rather than a store. Alcohol-free, six fibre reeds, flip weekly. 50ml Rs 849 lasts 6-8 weeks on a reception sideboard; 130ml Rs 1,349 lasts 14-18 weeks. Reaches one seating zone, which in a converted drawing room is exactly the reach you want.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - on one unit, Rs 11,999. No water, so no added humidity and nothing settling on fabric, wood or paper; a 1h/4h/8h/24h timer so it runs business hours and is off overnight; adjustable intensity to hold it at a house level; a key-lock so nobody at the desk turns it up; under 38dB; wall or HVAC mount so the source sits where the AC will carry it.
Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar in an alcohol-free, phthalate-free, coconut-derived base. Six fibre reeds, flipped weekly. 50ml at Rs 849 for 6-8 weeks, 130ml at Rs 1,349 for 14-18 weeks. Reaches one seating or desk zone - a volume control, never a range control. Made in Pune, India.
Why a house is not a store: the four things that set the register
Four facts about a residential-locality premises decide the register before any bottle is opened. Read them in order; the last one is where most Arera Colony businesses go wrong.
1
The bones
The customer reads the building as a home, and expects a home's smell
Walk in through your own gate as a customer would. A path, a verandah or porch, a front door with a grille, a hall that widens into the old drawing room, a staircase somewhere. Nothing about this is retail, and the customer registers that before they register your signage. A house carries certain expectations about smell: fresh air first, then wood, floor polish, perhaps tea and paper. A store's fragrance - loud, sweet, designed to be noticed in seconds - sits on those bones like a neon sign on a bungalow. The register that agrees with the building is the dry one: cedar, sage, a little tea, light woods. Where the interior has been stripped to white walls, glass and stone, the same idea in a cooler key is lemon-and-mint. Either way the target is a house someone keeps well, and the test is whether a visitor would think you had chosen a fragrance at all.
Test: stand in your own hall with your eyes closed. If the first thing you notice is fragrance, the register or the level is wrong for the building.
2
The visit
One customer for an hour is not a hundred customers for a minute
A store's fragrance has a job to do in seconds across a large open floor, because that is how long anyone is in it and how big it is. A business here works the other way round: a customer sits in the old drawing room for an hour, or a family occupies the lounge for an afternoon, in rooms with walls and doors. Whatever is noticeable in the first ten seconds is still there at minute forty, and by then it has become the room's character rather than a welcome. So the level is set for the person who stays longest and for the staff who breathe it nine hours a day, never for the person who walks past the desk. Noticed at the door, forgotten by the sofa, un-nameable from the chair. If your receptionist says it is too much, it is too much, and that rule stands however affluent the customer is.
Rule: judge from a chair at minute forty, not from the doorway at second five.
3
The rooms
A house has doors, and doors decide where scent goes
A retail floor is one volume of air. A converted house is six or eight, and the plan has to say which of them carry scent. The reception or lounge carries it; that is where the source lives. Every room the customer goes into for the actual work - a clinic's consultation and treatment rooms, a salon's colour and wash stations, a wealth office's meeting room, a boutique's fitting rooms - carries nothing placed inside it, because a small closed room over-scents in minutes and the customer inherits a trace through the open door anyway. Clinical, treatment and food areas stay unscented as a rule, and a clinician's judgement overrides any plan. The entrance carries nothing because a front door and a garden gate exchange their air all day. The clinic version of this map is stricter still, and the salon, boutique and wealth-office versions differ mainly in which room is excluded.
Rule: one source in the room the customer waits in; nothing placed in the room the customer works in.
4
The spray
The real alternative in most of Bhopal is a can of room freshener, ten minutes before the customer
Be honest about what the current arrangement is. In most customer-facing premises in the city, the arrangement is that a staff member sprays a room freshener when a customer is announced. That is the smell the customer actually meets - sweet, loud, chemical, and unmistakably a spray - and it is the exact opposite of a well-kept house. A machine on a timer at a locked low level, or a reed that simply sits on the sideboard, is how a business never smells like a spray again. On a small floor that is a Mountain Breeze reed with nothing to plug in. On a real connected floor it is a Vaayu running business hours on its timer, held at one level by the key-lock, so the level does not drift upward under many hands. Fragrance never masks an odour, either: a damp store room or a pantry is a ventilation problem first, and scent over it makes a third smell.
Rule: retire the spray before you buy anything. Whatever you buy next should be invisible to the customer as an act.
The Vaayu runs business hours on a timer, holds its level under a key-lock, and switches off in one press.
A business in a residential locality is judged as a house before it is judged as a business. Make it smell like a house someone keeps well, and stop there.
Dry woods, sage, tea. Set for the customer who stays an hour and the staff who stay all day. The machine only keeps it there.
The residential-locality default: one Mountain Breeze reed diffuser on the reception sideboard, ₹849 for 50ml, 6-8 weeks, reaches one seating zone.
Here is the register laid over a typical converted premises in a residential locality. Mark the gate, the front door, the AC returns and every room the customer works in, and most of the decisions make themselves.
The SOSA plan
A converted house, room by room
The room
What it should smell like
Gate, path and porch
Nothing. Outdoor air, and the first thing the customer smells should be the garden or the street, not your fragrance drifting out of the door.
The front door and hall
Nothing placed here. A front door exchanges its air every time it opens; the first impression happens in the room where the customer sits, not on the threshold.
Reception or lounge - the old drawing room
Dry and clean, noticed on arrival and forgotten within a minute. This is where the source lives - a Mountain Breeze reed on the sideboard in a small room, a Sukoon in a larger one, a Vaayu from about 1,500 sq ft of connected floor. View →
Consultation, treatment, meeting and fitting rooms
Nothing placed inside. A small closed room over-scents in minutes; the room inherits a faint trace through the open door, and a clinician's or the owner's judgement overrides any plan. Clinical and treatment rooms stay unscented as a rule.
A white, glass-fronted extension or a modern wing
The same idea in a cooler key - lemon, mint, eucalyptus - from a Morning Freshness reed, because cedar can read too warm against white and stone. View →
Pantry, toilets, store rooms, staff areas
Not in the plan. Extractors and closed doors; these are the rooms that make a house smell of something wrong, and they are fixed by ventilation, not fragrance.
The old drawing room carries it; the working rooms inherit a trace
A Mountain Breeze reed at ₹849 is the honest start for a converted house. Send a floor plan with the gate, the front door and the AC returns marked and we will size it honestly.
One register, three ways to carry it, chosen by how much connected customer-facing floor you actually have. Made in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA well-kept-home specification
A converted house, scented like a house - sized to its rooms
500ml ultrasonic, 16-18 hours on low, covers roughly 270-320 sq ft; water-based, so it does add a little moisture - say so honestly in a room full of fabric and paper
Between 750 and 1,500 sq ft a Vaayu is bought for control, no water and consistency - never for coverage. The four 100ml bottles in the Vaayu box are the supply; confirm refill availability with SOSA before you plan on it. Fragrance here is an interior and hospitality decision like lighting or seating: SOSA makes no claim that it changes footfall, conversion, sales, fees, admissions, referrals, trust or any decision a client, patient, parent or buyer makes, and no claim about pain, anxiety, stress, mood or wellbeing. It is never a substitute for ventilation, cleaning, extraction or infection control, and clinical, treatment, classroom and food areas stay unscented. The entrance carries nothing; the working rooms inherit a trace. Ask for a Bhopal scenting plan and we will mark up your rooms honestly, including whether you need a machine at all.

A note from Sonal
Arera Colony is the part of Bhopal I find easiest to write a plan for, because the buildings do half the work. When a business has moved into a house, the house tells you what it should smell like - fresh air, wood, floor polish, maybe tea - and all I have to do is stop the owner from buying a store's fragrance for it. The owners who write to me have usually seen a mall or a hotel lobby and want that. I send them back to their own hall: stand there, eyes closed, and ask whether a guest would think you had chosen a fragrance at all. If yes, it is too much for a house.
The register I would put in almost every one of these premises is the dry one - cedar, sage, a little tea - and the Mountain Breeze reed on the sideboard of the old drawing room is where most of them should start and where many of them should stop. Where the interior has gone white and glass, the same idea in a cooler key is lemon-and-mint. Nothing sweet, nothing floral, no oud - I make none for the home and a heavy oud becomes what the customer remembers instead of you. The working rooms carry nothing placed inside them; the clinic version of that rule is absolute.
A machine comes into it only when there is a real connected floor to hold at one level, and then one Vaayu at ₹11,999 on its timer with the lock on is how a premises never smells like a spray again. And through all of it: no claim that fragrance changes what a customer decides, pays or thinks of your business, and no claim about mood or wellbeing. It is an interiors decision, like the lamps. Made in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Why should a customer-facing business in a residential locality smell like a home rather than a shop?
Because the customer reads the building as a home before they read it as a business. Most premises around Arera Colony are converted houses or residential ground floors, with a gate, a front door and rooms that were once a drawing room. A store's fragrance is built to be noticed in seconds across an open floor; here it would be noticed for an hour in a closed room. The register that agrees with the building is dry and quiet: cedar, sage, a little tea, light woods.
Which SOSA fragrance suits a converted bungalow with wood and fabric interiors?
Mountain Breeze - Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar - is the residential-locality default, because it is the driest register SOSA makes and reads as a well-kept house rather than a product. A 50ml reed at Rs 849 on the reception sideboard covers one seating zone for six to eight weeks. Where the interior has been stripped to white walls, glass and stone, Morning Freshness at Rs 749, a clean lemon-and-mint, is the cooler alternative.
Should the garden gate, porch or front door of a converted premises carry fragrance?
No. The gate and porch are outdoor air, and the first thing a customer should smell is the garden or the street, not your fragrance leaking out of the door. The front door and hall exchange their air every time the door opens, so anything placed there is wasted and then turned up. The first impression happens in the room where the customer actually sits, and that is where the single source belongs.
Do the consultation, treatment or meeting rooms of an Arera Colony business need their own scent?
Nothing should be placed inside them. A small closed room over-scents within minutes, and a customer who is discussing money, a treatment or a purchase for an hour should not be doing it inside a fragrance. The reception or lounge carries the scent; the working rooms inherit a faint trace through the open door. Clinical and treatment rooms stay unscented as a rule, and a clinician's judgement overrides any plan.
Does a well-kept-home scent change what affluent customers decide or pay at a premium business?
SOSA makes no such claim, and a supplier who offers you a figure is selling. The environment is part of what a business in a residential locality is quietly judged on, but what earns the customer is the work. Ambient fragrance is an interiors decision, like the lamps or the chairs: it does not change what a customer decides, pays or thinks of you in any way SOSA will assert. What it does is stop the premises smelling of a room-freshener spray.
For a whole connected floor, on during business hours, off overnight, locked in between: SOSA Vaayu, ₹11,999, waterless, for the reception and lounge of a larger premises.
