When does the machine become appropriate? Once they are in their own home and it is over about 2,000 sq ft - then it is an excellent housewarming or first-Diwali gift.
What if a group has pooled for something large? Give it with a note to install it once the house is settled, after paint and joinery have aired out.
A wedding gift is bought before the address is known
This page argues against its own most expensive product for a specific and checkable reason. Every recommendation on this site turns on one number - the volume of the home - and at a wedding that number does not exist. Consider what is actually true on the day. A large share of newly married couples in India are not moving into a home of their own immediately: they live with family for the first year or two, or they move into a rented flat while something is being built, or they are waiting on possession of an apartment that will be handed over in eight months. Even where there is a new home, the people buying wedding gifts have usually never been inside it, and the difference between an eleven hundred square foot flat and a two thousand four hundred square foot one decides this purchase completely. The SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is rated for up to a thousand cubic metres, which the product states as about two thousand to three thousand square feet. Bought for a flat half that size it will over-scent the home, and an over-scented home is not a neutral outcome - it is a daily irritation that the couple cannot switch off by putting the present in a cupboard, and they will be far too polite to tell you. There is a second reason beyond size, and it applies even when the address is known. A machine is a settling-in purchase. It suits a home where the furniture has arrived, where somebody knows which wall the air conditioning return is on and where the main circulation path runs, and where the household has a routine that a schedule can be built around. A couple in their first three months has none of that. They also, very often, have a house that is still off-gassing - fresh paint, varnish, polish, new joinery and new furniture all give off solvent for days to weeks, and the honest advice for a new home is open windows rather than fragrance, because fragrance added to curing paint smells of both. So the recommendation for the wedding itself is the reed diffuser duo set, and it is not a consolation prize. It is the product that fits an unknown home. Day and Night pairs Morning Freshness - Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus - with Evening Calm, lavender with chamomile, at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight rupees for two fifty millilitre bottles or two thousand four hundred and ninety-eight for two of one hundred and thirty. Fresh and Grounded pairs Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze, Himalayan pine with sage and cedar, at one thousand five hundred and forty-eight and two thousand five hundred and forty-eight. Warmth and Bloom pairs Fresh Brew, Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla, with Garden Bloom, British rose with night-blooming jasmine, at one thousand five hundred and ninety-eight and two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight. Every one of those works in a one bedroom rental and in a villa. None of them needs a socket, a schedule, an app or a wall. They can be packed and moved twice in two years without losing anything, which is exactly what a young couple's possessions have to survive. And a duo means two registers rather than one, so neither person is stuck with the other's preference - which is a real consideration when two people are combining households and have never had to agree about how a home should smell. If the household is one where a larger wedding present is expected, there are two honest ways up the ladder without guessing at cubic metres. The first is quantity rather than machinery: three or four reed diffusers at seven hundred and forty-nine to one thousand three hundred and forty-nine rupees each, with a three hundred millilitre refill at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine, comes to a substantial and completely safe gift that will be used in whatever home they end up in. The second is to split the occasion. Give the duo set at the wedding, and tell them the second half is coming when they move in - then buy the machine at the housewarming or at their first Diwali, once you have seen the house or simply asked its built-up area. That conversation is easy by then and awkward now. A pooled group gift is the case where the machine sometimes does get bought at a wedding, usually by colleagues or a friend circle. If that has already happened, it is still salvageable and worth handling well: hand it over as a box rather than as something to be set up on the day, say plainly that it is for the new house once the house is ready, and include the two facts that make it work later - that it ships with four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils so nothing else needs ordering, and that its refills are the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, never the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic diffusers. Add that it lies flat on a shelf so no drilling is needed, runs at under thirty-eight decibels, draws five watts and weighs nine hundred grams, and that it should go in the main circulation path rather than a corner, with intensity started low. Two last honest notes. If the couple's new home turns out to be larger than roughly three thousand square feet, or if what they are furnishing is a family business space rather than a house, the machine is too small and the right conversation is about SOSA Angaan at twenty-five thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees for around eight to ten thousand square feet or SOSA Meenar at thirty-eight thousand five hundred for twelve to eighteen thousand. And nothing in this range is a religious item or part of any wedding ritual - it is a household gift, and fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.
Which makes the machine the right product at the wrong moment
The gift that fits a home nobody has seen.
| Scent | Why it suits the mood |
|---|---|
| At the wedding · duo ₹1,498 to ₹2,598 | Fits any home, needs nothing, and survives two moves in two years. |
| A larger wedding gift · quantity | Three or four diffusers plus a ₹2,399 refill - substantial and completely safe. |
| At the housewarming · Vaayu ₹11,999 | Once the home is known to be ~2,000 sq ft and up, and the paint has aired. |
| Already pooled for the machine · hand over the box | For the new house when it is ready - not to be set up on the wedding day. |

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
