Why not run it during Diwali? Because cleaning chemicals, fresh paint, deep frying, diyas, agarbatti and havan smoke are already in the air, and fragrance on top of that is simply noise.
What if the home is an ordinary size? Then a reed diffuser duo set from Rs 1,498 is the correct Diwali gift, not the machine.
The right gift on the wrong week
Diwali is unusual among festivals in that the house is the main character. Weeks before anybody thinks about gifts, the cleaning begins - cupboards emptied, lofts cleared, walls washed or repainted, curtains taken down, floors polished. Then the lights go up, then the rangoli, then the doors are opened and for several days a stream of relatives, neighbours, colleagues and delivery people comes through. Almost no other occasion in the year involves this much collective attention to a building. So a gift directed at the house rather than at a person is not an oblique choice at Diwali; it is the most on-theme thing you can give, and it is one of the few gifts that the whole household receives rather than one member of it. The SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the version of that gift for a large home. It is a waterless cold-air nebuliser: pressurised air breaks undiluted fragrance oil into a dry nano-mist fine enough to travel with the air the home is already moving, so rather than a bottle in each room there is one even field across the whole volume, including the corridors, the landing and the entrance where nobody puts a bottle and where, at Diwali specifically, everybody stands. Coverage is up to a thousand cubic metres, stated as about two thousand to three thousand square feet. No water, no heat, no dampness added to a closed air-conditioned home, no oily film on the shelf underneath. Four hundred millilitre refillable tank lasting up to around seventy-five days a fill. Bluetooth app plus onboard buttons, with one, four, eight and twenty-four hour run windows, day selection and adjustable intensity. Under thirty-eight decibels, twelve volts at five watts, one hundred and sixty-five by eighty by two hundred and fifteen millimetres, nine hundred grams, black or white, freestanding on a shelf or mounted on a wall or an HVAC return, with auto-stop and a key lock, CE, RoHS and SGS, made in India. It ships with four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils in one of three curated combinations, which matters at a festival because it means the box is complete - nothing further has to be ordered before it works. Now the part that most Diwali gift pages will not tell you, and it is the reason this one is worth reading. The festival week is the worst week of the year to start scenting a house, and the causes are all temporary and all obvious once listed. The deep cleaning has just happened, which means phenyl, bleach, floor cleaner and glass cleaner are in the air and on every surface. Many households paint or touch up before Diwali, and fresh paint and varnish give off solvent for days to weeks. The kitchen is doing more frying, roasting and sweet-making in five days than in the previous two months, and those molecules are persistent. And then there is the festival's own fragrance, which is not incidental to it: diyas and their oil, agarbatti, dhoop, havan smoke, flowers, camphor. A layer of manufactured fragrance introduced into that mixture does not read as luxurious; it reads as one more smell competing with four others, and the machine gets blamed for a result it did not cause. So the instruction that should travel with the gift is simple and it makes you look thoughtful rather than apologetic: open it now, put it where it is going to live, and start it the week after the festival, when the cooking has calmed down, the paint has aired and the house has gone back to being a house. If the household wants fragrance during the festival itself, the right products are the ones designed to be occasional rather than continuous - the woodenwick candles at nine hundred and forty-nine rupees and five paise in gardenia, jasmine, sandalwood and lavender, or the soy gift sets from six hundred and ninety-nine, lit for an evening in a room that is not currently full of frying. And ventilation does more than any of them: an exhaust running while the kitchen works and a window open on the far side of the house is free, and it is what actually clears the air. Two limits, stated plainly because they matter more at a festival when budgets loosen. The machine belongs in a large home - a villa, a large open-plan flat, a penthouse, a four or five bedroom home of roughly two thousand square feet or more. In an ordinary two or three bedroom flat it over-scents, and the correct Diwali gift there is a reed diffuser duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees: Day and Night pairing Morning Freshness with Evening Calm, Fresh and Grounded pairing Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze, or Warmth and Bloom pairing Fresh Brew with Garden Bloom. That is not a lesser gift; it is the right one, and giving it is better than giving something that makes a home unpleasant. Second, the refills. The Vaayu takes the waterless nebuliser oils at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, and not the water-based Hotel Collection at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, which is a separate system for ultrasonic diffusers. Say this when you hand it over, because a well-meaning relative topping it up with the wrong bottle is the commonest way these machines go wrong. Finally, nothing in this range is a religious item and nothing here is offered as part of any ritual or puja. This is a household object for a household that likes its home to smell good, and if a smell has a cause - a damp corner, a bin, a chimney overdue a clean - fragrance is a finishing touch and never a fix.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
