Every October I watch the same thing happen. A business with two hundred clients buys two hundred identical boxes of dry fruit, and every one of those clients receives eleven other boxes of dry fruit in the same fortnight. The gift is not bad. It is simply invisible, because it arrived alongside eleven of itself.
Fragrance works differently for one plain reason: almost nobody else sends it. A hanging car perfume in a client's car is noticed every morning for weeks, and it is the only thing in the pile that is still being used in December. That is the whole argument, and it does not require me to claim anything about loyalty or revenue, which I would not.
Two honest notes. Scent is personal, so for a long client list choose clean and widely liked registers rather than distinctive ones, and keep the distinctive choices for the handful of people you actually know.
