A wedding is the only occasion where the couple have written down what they want and handed it to you. That makes the registry the safe move and the default one, and there is nothing wrong with taking it. But a registry has a blind spot, and it is a large one: every item on it is for a house. The couple will spend the first weeks of their marriage somewhere else entirely, in rooms booked by somebody else, and no list has an entry for that.
Quick answers — read this first
Is it acceptable to give a wedding gift that is not on the registry? Yes, if you have a reason the couple would recognise. A registry is a list of things for a home. A gift that goes with them on the honeymoon or on the first year of trips is doing a different job, not a worse one. What is not acceptable is going off-list because the list was inconvenient.

What is a good wedding gift for a couple who travel? Something small, complete and shared. SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 is a cordless, waterless diffuser, 6.9 cm, with a named scent trio in the box - so it fits in a honeymoon bag and works the first night without anything else being bought.

How much should you spend on a wedding gift in India? It varies enormously by relationship and by region, and cash is still the norm at many weddings. Where an object is expected, ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 covers most guests who are not immediate family. ₹3,999 sits inside that band rather than above it, which matters at an occasion where amounts get noticed.
The short answer
Short answer: A registry covers the house. It cannot reach a hotel room - which is the one honest argument for going off-list at a wedding.
The pick: SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - waterless, cordless, 6.9 cm, 10 hours a charge, scent trio included.
Honest note: it scents a space and does not humidify it, and it travels in hand baggage because of the battery.
Gifts for people who travel - at a glanceThey own the luggage. They do not own the room.Safar ₹3,999 - cordless, waterless, 6.9 cm, 10 hrs a chargeCar, handbag, work desk, hotel nightstandScent trio included · auto-off timer
A frequent traveller owns every object a suitcase can hold. What they do not own is a room that smells like theirs. SOSA Safar is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion diffuser - 6.9 cm, Type-C, up to 10 hours a charge, with a 1/2/3-hour auto-off timer - for the car, the desk, the cabin bag and the hotel nightstand. Rs 3,999 with a scent trio included.
Straight answer
When does it make sense to go off the registry?
There is one good reason and several bad ones. The bad ones are that the list was picked over, that the remaining items were dull, or that you wanted the gift to feel more personal than a serving dish. None of those are the couple's problem.

The good reason is coverage. A registry is assembled by two people furnishing a home. It is complete for the house and empty everywhere else, and the everywhere else is where a newly married couple actually spend the next few months: a honeymoon, the trips back to both families, the work travel that does not pause for a wedding. If your gift lands in that gap, it is not competing with the list at all.

The pick: SOSA Safar at ₹3,999. A waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion diffuser - 6.9 cm, 2000 mAh charged over Type-C, a 20ml bottle, three speeds, a 1, 2 or 3-hour auto-off timer, up to 10 hours continuous or 30 hours intermittent per charge. A named scent trio is included, so nothing has to be bought before it works. It is small enough to go in a honeymoon bag without a packing argument, and it is a room object rather than a personal one, which is the right shape for a gift to two people. The ₹4,499 version is the same device with the hotel-inspired trio instead.

The second thing you are competing with is the pile. Wedding gifts are rarely opened at the wedding. They are opened in a batch, weeks later, by two exhausted people working through a stack, with no card readily attached to any of it. A gift has about ten seconds in that context to explain what it is. Anything that needs a demonstration or a manual loses. A complete object that can be switched on where it sits does not.

If the couple are not travellers. Do not force it. A 130ML reed duo at ₹2,498 is the home version of the same idea and needs no charging at all. And if the registry is genuinely still open on something useful, take the registry - being correct is worth more at a wedding than being interesting.

Two notes. Safar is aroma only: it scents a space and does not add moisture to the air. It has a rechargeable battery, so it travels in hand baggage rather than checked luggage, and airline policy on that varies, so it is worth a check with the carrier before a honeymoon flight. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: a registry is complete for the house and empty for everywhere else - and the first months of a marriage happen mostly somewhere else.
For someone who travels, the starting point is SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - waterless, cordless, 6.9 cm, up to 10 hours a charge, with a scent trio in the box. It works in the car, on a desk and on a hotel nightstand. If ₹3,999 is more than the occasion needs, a 3ML attar at ₹379 travels just as well.

What you are actually competing with at a wedding

A wedding gift has three things working against it that no other occasion imposes, and each one narrows what is sensible to buy.

1
The list
You are competing with something the couple actually wrote
A registry is not a suggestion, it is a statement of what two people have decided they need. Going against it without a reason is a gamble made with somebody else's home. The only defensible off-list gift is one the list could not have contained, and the clearest example is anything for the rooms they will sleep in that are not theirs. A honeymoon is several nights in hotel rooms, and the year after a wedding usually contains more travel than average, not less. Safar sits in that gap rather than next to a better version of something already on the list.
Tip: Off-list is defensible only when the list could not have covered it.
2
The pile
Your gift will be opened weeks later, in bulk, with no context
Almost nothing at an Indian wedding is opened in front of the giver. Gifts are stacked, moved, and worked through at some point afterwards by two people who are tired and behind on thank-you messages. Whatever you sent has a few seconds to make its own case without you standing next to it. That is an argument for objects that are complete in the box and obvious on sight, and against anything requiring assembly, a second purchase or an explanation. The scent trio being included matters here for a reason that has nothing to do with money: it means the gift is finished when it arrives.
3
Scale
Wedding amounts get noticed in a way birthday amounts do not
Weddings are the one occasion where what people spent is semi-public and quietly remembered, by both families. That cuts both ways. A gift far below the norm is awkward, and a gift far above it can read as a statement rather than a present, particularly from a colleague or a newer friend. ₹3,999 sits in the ordinary guest band at most weddings rather than at the top of it, which is usually where you want to be. If you are giving as a group - four colleagues, a set of cousins - one good object at that price is a cleaner gift than four separate small ones arriving in the same pile.
Tip: One object from four people beats four objects from four people, every time.
The SOSA principle
A registry is complete for the house and empty for everywhere else.
And the months after a wedding are spent mostly somewhere else - a honeymoon, the trips back to both families, the work travel that did not pause for the ceremony.

Choosing a gift that survives being opened three weeks later

Decide first whether this couple's next six months are mostly at home or mostly away. That answer picks the object.

The SOSA gift edit
Wedding gifts by what the couple's next six months look like
Option Who it suits, and what it costs
A honeymoon and a year of travel ahead SOSA Safar at ₹3,999. Cordless, waterless, 6.9 cm, trio included, small enough for a honeymoon bag.
A couple who care about how rooms feel The same device at ₹4,499 with the hotel-inspired trio, for that clean and understated register.
Setting up one home and staying in it A 130ML reed duo at ₹2,498. Two rooms, nothing to charge, nothing to switch on.
Four of you giving together One Safar at ₹3,999 rather than four separate objects landing in the same pile.

If the couple are travellers first and you want the case made on those terms rather than on registry logic, Wedding gift for travellers covers it. If the gift is really aimed at the honeymoon itself, Honeymoon gift is the closer fit. The Safar page carries the specification, and the reed diffusers are the home-first alternative.

Not sure what will land right?
Send us how they travel - road or air, hotels or one new home - what they already own, and your budget. If a product is the wrong shape for the gift, we will say so.

Wedding gifts are not opened at weddings. They are opened three weeks later, in a stack, by two tired people.

The SOSA gift edit

Every SOSA gift is alcohol-free, long-lasting and ready to hand over, handmade in small batches in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit by format, which is what decides how a gift reads.

The SOSA gift edit for a friend
Five answers by how the person actually travels - from a ₹379 attar to the ₹3,999 Safar
Gift Best for What it says, and what it costs From
SOSA Safar Anyone who travels · the default Waterless, cordless, rechargeable. 6.9 cm, 10 hrs a charge, auto-off timer. Car, bag, desk, hotel room. Scent trio included ₹3,999
SOSA Safar · hotel-inspired trio Someone who loves good hotels The same device with the hotel-inspired scent trio instead of the SOSA trio ₹4,499
Attar roll-on 3ML A smaller travel gift Alcohol-free oil, 3ML, goes anywhere - the compact gift when ₹3,999 is too much ₹379
Solid perfume tin 15g Someone who packs light Solid balm in a metal tin - cannot spill, not a liquid, survives a shared shelf ₹500
Reed diffuser 50ML Someone who is finally home For the person who has stopped travelling, or the flat they come back to ₹749

Four honest notes. SOSA Safar is aroma only - it scents a space and does not humidify it, so if someone wants moisture in dry air they want Boond or Sukoon instead. It has a built-in rechargeable battery, so it travels in hand baggage rather than checked luggage, and airline policies on devices with batteries vary - worth a check before a long trip. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil; the Hotel Collection is a separate water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers, and the two are not interchangeable. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own interpretations - SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The hardest person to buy for is not someone with expensive taste. It is someone who travels constantly, because they have already solved every problem a gift usually solves. They own the luggage, the organisers, the adaptors, the neck pillow and the noise-cancelling headphones, and they bought better versions than you were going to.

What they do not own is the room. Somebody who spends a hundred nights a year in hotels spends those nights in rooms that smell of someone else's cleaning product - pleasant enough, anonymous, and never theirs. That is the one gap a suitcase cannot fill, and it is the reason we made Safar the way we did: waterless because water spills in a bag, cordless because hotel sockets are never where you need them, and small enough at 6.9 cm to stop being a decision about packing space.

Two things I will say plainly. It is aroma only - it scents a room, it does not add moisture to the air, and anyone who wants a humidifier should buy a humidifier. And it has an auto-off timer for a reason: a hotel room is borrowed space, and nothing should be left running in it while nobody is there. Use the timer, keep it on the low setting, and the room smells like theirs for the evening and like the hotel's again by checkout. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

Is a portable diffuser an appropriate wedding gift?
It is, for a couple who travel, and it has an honest argument behind it: a registry covers a house and cannot cover a hotel room. Safar at ₹3,999 is cordless, waterless and 6.9 cm, with a named scent trio in the box, so it fits a honeymoon bag and works the first night without anything else being bought.
Is it rude to buy a wedding gift that is not on the registry?
Not if you have a reason the couple would recognise. Going off-list because the list was picked over is a gamble taken with somebody else's home. Going off-list because the list could not have contained the thing you are giving is a different matter, and travel is the clearest example of that gap.
How much should a wedding gift cost?
It varies by relationship, by family and by region, and cash remains the norm at many Indian weddings. Where an object is expected, ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 covers most guests who are not immediate family. ₹3,999 sits inside that band rather than above it, which matters at an occasion where amounts are semi-public.
Can a group give one gift together?
Yes, and for a wedding it is usually the better move. Four colleagues giving one ₹3,999 object is a cleaner gift than four small objects arriving separately in the same pile, and it is easier for the couple to acknowledge. Agree who writes the card before the day rather than after it.
Will it be a problem on a honeymoon flight?
It has a built-in rechargeable battery, so it belongs in hand baggage rather than checked luggage, and airline policy on devices with batteries varies by carrier and route. Check with the airline before a long flight. It is also aroma only, so it scents a room without adding moisture to the air, and the auto-off timer means it is never left running in an empty room.
