Founder Diaries · Fragrance vs Diffusion
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles5 min readUpdated August 2026
It's a fair question, and I'd rather answer it honestly than sell you a different bottle. The bigger reason, by far, is that reed diffusion is subtle by design. The fragrance does play a small part — but the method, not the oil, decides how much of the room you actually smell.
Quick answer
Which is it? Mostly the method. A reed is a passive, low-energy diffuser, so it stays close-range whatever fragrance you put in it.
Does the fragrance matter? A little — heavier bases linger, light citrus flashes off — but the difference in reach is small.
Want it to fill the room? Change the method, not the oil. An active diffuser (Sukoon or SOSA Safar) is the honest fix.
The short version
Short answer: It's mostly that passive reed diffusion is naturally subtle — not a weak fragrance. Both contribute, but the method dominates reach.
The pick: Keep a
reed for soft close-range scent; add a
SOSA Safar (₹3,999) if you want walk-in projection in a small room.
Let me split the question into its two honest halves, because they genuinely are two different things — and most of the confusion in home fragrance comes from treating them as one. There is fragrance strength, which is how concentrated and characterful the oil itself is, and there is diffusion strength, which is how forcefully that scent is carried into the air around you. A reed diffuser can hold a beautifully rich, high-quality fragrance and still feel quiet in the room, because the reeds have no way to push that fragrance anywhere. They simply let it evaporate at its own slow pace.
That is what "passive" means. A reed sits in a bottle, the oil wicks up the porous sticks, and the surface of each reed gives the fragrance off gently into the still air nearby. There is no heat, no fan, no mist, no pressure — nothing adding energy to send the scent across the room. So the scent forms a soft cloud within about a metre or so of the bottle and thins out quickly beyond that. On a monsoon evening in a shut Pune bedroom you'll meet it beautifully when you walk close; from the far corner it will always be faint. That faintness is the technology working exactly as intended, not the fragrance failing.
The honest split
How much is the fragrance, and how much is the method?
1. The method sets the ceiling. Passive evaporation is low-energy. No reed fragrance — however concentrated — projects like an active diffuser, because nothing is pushing it out.
2. The fragrance nudges it within that ceiling. Heavier, woodier, sweeter bases linger and feel a touch more present up close; light citrus and fresh notes lift off faster and read airier.
3. So a "weak" room is usually a normal reed. If it smells lovely at the neck of the bottle but soft across the room, nothing is broken. That is the honest signature of the format.
4. If you want reach, change the method. An active diffuser keeps pushing scent into the air, so it fills the room the way a passive reed never can.
The honest caveat: before you spend anything, rule out your own nose. If a reed smelled strong for two days and then "went weak," that's usually olfactory habituation — step outside for ten minutes and walk back in. If it returns, the reed is fine and so is the fragrance.
So does the fragrance matter at all?
Yes — just less than you'd hope, and mostly for character rather than carry. Our Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar — has a woody, resinous base that lingers and feels grounded and present when you're near it. Our Morning Freshness — Malabar lemon and mint — is deliberately bright and clean, so it lifts and refreshes but naturally reads lighter and airier. Put both on the same shelf with the same number of reeds and you'll notice the woody one seems to "hold" the space a little more. But neither will announce itself from ten feet away, because the reeds can't make them.

Himalayan pine, sage and cedar — a woody, resinous base that feels the most present of our reeds at close range. Still a passive, close-range scent by design, not a room-filler. Alcohol-free, silent, no plug. Roughly six to eight weeks.

A different oil changes the character, not the carry. Reach is a function of the diffusion method, so that's what you upgrade.
The honest core
Fragrance strength and diffusion strength are two different things.
A reed can hold a rich, beautiful fragrance and still feel quiet, because the method — not the oil — sets how far the scent travels. Chase the method, not a louder bottle.
Frequently asked
Is my reed diffuser weak because of the fragrance or because reeds are just subtle?
Mostly because reeds are subtle by design. A reed diffuser works by passive evaporation, which is a low-energy process, so it produces a gentle close-range scent no matter which fragrance you use. The fragrance does contribute a little to how present the scent feels, but the diffusion method sets the ceiling on how far it reaches. A soft-smelling room is usually a reed behaving normally, not a weak or faulty fragrance.
Does the fragrance matter at all for how strong a reed smells?
A little. Heavier, woodier or sweeter bases tend to linger and feel more present up close, while light citrus and fresh notes flash off faster and read airier. So two fragrances in the same reed will not feel identical. But the difference is modest, and even the most tenacious fragrance in a passive reed is still a close-range ambient scent. The note changes the character far more than it changes the reach.
If it is not the fragrance, will buying a different reed fix the weakness?
Only slightly, and only if you dislike your current scent. Swapping to a heavier fragrance might make the reed feel a touch more present at close range, but it will not make it project across the room, because projection is a function of the diffusion method, not the oil. If your real goal is a scent you notice on walking in, an active diffuser such as SOSA Safar or a Sukoon is the honest fix, not another bottle of reeds.
How do I get a stronger room-filling scent instead?
Change from passive to active diffusion. An ultrasonic diffuser like the Sukoon pushes scent out on a fine mist and genuinely fills a room; SOSA Safar is a waterless, cordless nebuliser that atomises neat fragrance for a drier, more perfume-like projection in a small room or bedroom. Keep the reed for soft, everyday background scent, and add an active diffuser for the walk-in moment you are missing.
Fix the method, not the bottle
