Founder Diaries · Gifts for Friends
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated September 2026
This post assumes one thing, and it is worth stating so you can check it: your friend has said he likes oud, or you have smelled it on him, or he has asked for it by name. That is the premise. Nobody likes oud because of who they are, and buying it on any other basis is guessing dressed up as insight. If you do have that piece of evidence, oud is one of the easier preferences to buy for, because it is unmistakable and there is not much room to land halfway.
Quick answers — read this first
What is a good oud gift for a friend who likes oud? A Nawaab white royal oud attar at ₹399 for 3ML if he wears fragrance, or the oud hanging car perfume at ₹509 if you would rather the gift went in his car.

How do I know if he likes oud? Because he has said so, or you have smelled something obviously oud-heavy on him, or he burns bakhoor at home. Those are the only good reasons. Oud is a strong, divisive note and it is not a safe default for anybody.

Is oud too strong for a gift? It is assertive, which is why the evidence matters. In a 3ML attar at ₹399 he controls how much goes on, and the oil format wears closer to the skin than a spray does, so it is less likely to fill a room than the same note in an alcohol-based bottle.
The short answer
Short answer: If he has actually told you he likes oud, buy it with confidence - Nawaab attar at ₹399 for 3ML for his skin, or the oud car perfume at ₹509 for his car.
The pick: a SOSA fragrance gift - alcohol-free, still in use months later, from ₹379.
Honest note: what makes a gift read as romantic is format and occasion, not how much it cost.
Gifts for a friend - at a glanceFormat decides the signal - a space reads differently from skinHis car, his room, his desk - no statement attached₹379 to ₹3,999 across every kind of friendSpending less does not make it less personal
Whether a gift reads as romantic comes down to format, occasion and privacy - not price. A fragrance for his car or his room carries no statement; one for his skin does. SOSA's range runs Rs 379 to Rs 3,999, alcohol-free and handmade in India.
Straight answer
He likes oud. What should I buy?
There are two places oud can go, and they are different gifts.

On him. Nawaab is our white royal oud attar - ₹399 for 3ML, ₹699 for 6ML, ₹1,199 for 12ML. Concentrated oil, no alcohol, rolled onto the wrist. Oud in an oil behaves rather differently from oud in a spray: it sits close to the skin and unfolds slowly instead of arriving in a cloud, which is usually what somebody who likes oud is after in the first place. Nawaab is not filed under one sort of wearer. It is one of four attars, offered to anybody who wants it, and the reason to buy it for him is that he likes oud.

In his car. The oud hanging car perfume at ₹509 for 12ml is the same preference aimed at a space rather than a person. If he drives, this is the version of the gift he will meet most often, and refills from ₹399 keep it going after the first one is done.

What we do not have, so you do not go looking. There is no oud reed diffuser in the range. If his room is the destination, the nearest thing in character is Mountain Breeze at ₹849, which is pine, sage and cedar - dry and woody rather than resinous, and a genuinely different thing from oud. Better to say that than to sell you a substitute and let you find out.

If you want both. The attar at ₹399 and the car perfume at ₹509 come to a little over ₹900 together, and they land as one considered gift rather than two small ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: buy oud because he told you he likes oud, then decide whether it goes on his wrist or in his car.
If he drives, the safest starting point is a hanging car perfume at ₹449 - it goes in his car rather than on him, so it carries no signal at all. If he does not drive, a reed diffuser from ₹749 does the same job for his room.
from ₹449

Working out which kind of oud he actually likes

Three things worth checking before you buy oud for somebody, even when you are sure the preference is real.

1
The evidence
Start from the sentence he actually said
There is a version of this gift that goes wrong, and it goes wrong at the very first step - somebody decides oud is the obvious choice without any input from the person receiving it. Oud is not an obvious choice for anybody. It is a strong, resinous, slightly smoky note that people either seek out or quietly avoid. If you can point to a sentence he said, a bottle you have seen on his shelf or the bakhoor he burns at home, buy Nawaab at ₹399 with confidence. If you cannot, buy something else.
Tip: If you cannot name the moment you learned he likes oud, you probably assumed it.
2
Concentration
Oud in an oil is not oud in a spray
The same note behaves differently depending on what is carrying it. An alcohol spray pushes oud outward, which is why it has a reputation for filling rooms. An attar keeps it near the skin, so it reads as slower and more private. A friend who likes oud but has been told he wears too much of it will find the oil a genuinely useful object, and one dab is a much finer level of control than two pumps.
3
Destination
His wrist and his dashboard are different gifts
Both are legitimate and they carry different weight. Something worn on the body is a choice about how he smells; something in the car is a choice about his commute. If you want the gift to be warm and uncomplicated, the car perfume at ₹509 does that. If you know him well and the closeness is not an issue, the attar is the better object of the two.
Tip: Same preference, two registers - pick the one that matches the friendship, not the budget.
The SOSA principle
Oud is a preference somebody states, never a default you assign.
Which is the good news, really - once he has said it out loud you can buy with more confidence here than in almost any other part of the range.

The two places oud can go

Two products carry oud properly, and one honest near-miss for his room.

Oud, by where the gift is going
Option Who it suits, and what it costs
He wears fragrance and you know it Nawaab white royal oud attar, ₹399 for 3ML, ₹699 for 6ML or ₹1,199 for 12ML.
He drives The oud hanging car perfume at ₹509, with refills from ₹399.
His room, with no oud diffuser available Mountain Breeze at ₹849 - pine, sage and cedar, which is dry and woody rather than resinous. A different thing, honestly labelled.
You want one gift that covers both The attar at ₹399 with the car perfume at ₹509, a little over ₹900 together.

If what he actually said was that he likes wood rather than oud specifically, those are not the same request and Woody, if he likes woody separates them. If you want the format explained before you commit to an oil, Attar for him covers what an attar is and how it is worn. Both sit in the attar collection.

Not sure what will land right?
Send us what he is into, whether he drives, how well you know him and your budget. If a product is the wrong shape for the gift, we will say so.

The SOSA gift edit

Every SOSA gift is alcohol-free, long-lasting and ready to hand over, handmade in small batches in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit by format, which is what decides how a gift reads.

The SOSA gift edit for a friend
Five answers by format and signal - from a ₹379 attar to a ₹3,999 car diffuser
Gift Best for What it says, and what it costs From
Hanging car perfume Any friend who drives Goes in his car, not on him - the format that carries no signal at all ₹449
Car spray set of 3 A close friend · feels chosen Three named scents in one box, still comfortably under a thousand ₹699
Reed diffuser 50ML His room, flat or desk Flame-free, no plug, no water - works in a rented room from day one ₹749
Attar roll-on 3ML A friend whose taste you know Alcohol-free oil at the wrist - worn, so only where you actually know him ₹379
SOSA Safar A friend who genuinely drives Waterless car diffuser - a car object, not a travel one, see the note below ₹3,999

Three honest notes. SOSA Safar is a car diffuser, not a travel product - it belongs with a friend who actually drives, and a solid perfume tin or attar roll-on is the genuinely portable gift for someone who flies. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil; the Hotel Collection is a separate water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers, and the two are not interchangeable. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations - SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

We get this question more than almost any other, and it is usually asked slightly apologetically: how do I give him something nice without it looking like something else? It is a fair question and it has a practical answer, so it is worth saying the answer out loud rather than being coy about it.

A gift reads as romantic because of format, occasion and privacy - almost never because of price. A fragrance you choose for someone to wear on their skin is a statement about how you would like them to smell. That is intimate whether or not you meant it to be. A fragrance for his car, his room or his desk is a gift for a place, and a place makes no such statement. That single distinction settles most of these questions before you have looked at a single product.

Two things follow that people get backwards. Spending less does not make a gift less romantic - a small private gift with no occasion attached can read as far more personal than a larger practical one. And a gift handed over at a birthday with other people in the room reads differently from the same object given quietly. If you are unsure, change the format or change the moment, not the budget. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best oud gift for a friend who likes oud?
Nawaab, our white royal oud attar, at ₹399 for 3ML, ₹699 for 6ML or ₹1,199 for 12ML. It is a concentrated alcohol-free oil applied at the wrist, so the oud unfolds close to the skin rather than filling a room. If you would rather the gift went in his car, the oud hanging car perfume is ₹509.
How do I know whether he likes oud?
Because he has told you, because you have smelled something obviously oud-heavy on him, or because he burns bakhoor or agarwood at home. Those are the only sound reasons. Oud is a strong and divisive note, so it is a poor guess and an excellent choice once the preference is known.
Does SOSA make an oud reed diffuser?
No. The reed diffuser range does not include an oud. The closest in character is Mountain Breeze at ₹849, which is pine, sage and cedar, and that is dry and woody rather than resinous. It is worth treating as a different scent rather than a substitute.
Is oud too strong to give as a present?
It is assertive, which is precisely why the stated preference matters. In a 3ML roll-on he controls the quantity himself, and an oil wears closer to the skin than an alcohol spray, so it is less likely to carry across a room than the same note in a conventional bottle.
Is an oud car perfume a good gift for someone who wears oud?
Often the best one, if he drives. It gives him the note he likes in a place he spends time every day, and because it is a gift for his car rather than for his person it carries none of the closeness a worn fragrance does. It is ₹509, with refills from ₹399.
