Every step up this ladder adds a specific thing rather than just a larger version of the last one. Five hundred buys breadth. A thousand buys duration. Fifteen hundred buys a complete system. Two and a half thousand buys a full-size one, or months of supply. And five thousand finishes an entire space so nobody has to think about it again.
Quick answers — read this first
What are the budget steps for a new parent gift? Rs 500 buys breadth, Rs 1,000 buys duration, Rs 1,500 buys a complete system, Rs 2,500 buys a full-size one or months of supply, and Rs 5,000 finishes a whole space.

Where do returns stop? Around Rs 1,500. Beyond that the honest way to spend more is duration - refills at Rs 2,399 and Rs 3,499 - rather than size, which is a storage problem.

What is the cheapest useful gift? Rs 379 for a coconut-soy candle or a 12ml attar. The 15ml Hotel Collection at Rs 299 is cheaper but only works if they own an ultrasonic diffuser.

What changes at each step of the ladder

Budget guides usually list the same products at bigger sizes and call that a ladder. This one is a genuine ladder, because each step adds a property the step below could not provide - and knowing which property you are buying makes the decision much faster. Step one, up to five hundred rupees: breadth. This is the surprise of the whole category. Almost every format that genuinely works for new parents costs less than five hundred rupees, because what suits their life is small, consumable and undemanding rather than large and expensive. A coconut-soy candle at three hundred and seventy-nine rupees, lead-free eco wick, phthalate-free, hand-poured in Pune, fifteen to eighteen hours, in Misty Mornings, Bookshop, Evening Walks or Cozy Corner. A 12ml alcohol-free attar at three hundred and seventy-nine to three hundred and ninety-nine - Adaa three hundred and seventy-nine, Ameeri three hundred and eighty-five, Mastani three hundred and eighty-nine, Nawaab three hundred and ninety-nine, the last a white oud composition with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate. A solid perfume at four hundred and fifty-nine to four hundred and eighty-nine, which is the most practical object in the range: thumb to open, finger to apply, four seconds, one hand, possible while holding a baby. Wax melts at four hundred and seventy-four, though they need a ceramic burner at five hundred and sixty-nine. And a hanging car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine to four hundred and ninety-nine, which is the most under-rated gift in this whole section. The honest floor is two hundred and ninety-nine rupees for the fifteen millilitre Hotel Collection concentrate - nothing exists below it - but that only works as a gift if they already own an ultrasonic diffuser, because on its own it is a refill. Step two, a thousand rupees: duration. The extra five hundred buys something that keeps working without anybody remembering it. A reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees - Morning Freshness seven hundred and forty-nine, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm seven hundred and ninety-nine, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew eight hundred and forty-nine - uses its own alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action, needs one minute at the start and nothing afterwards, and runs for two or three months. In a household where neither adult can be relied on to remember anything, that is the single most valuable property a gift can have. The alternative at this step is coverage rather than duration: a candle at three hundred and seventy-nine with a car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine covers inside and outside the house for eight hundred and twenty-eight, and a two-piece car combination at eight hundred and ninety-nine to nine hundred and forty-nine gives them two registers in one car. Step three, fifteen hundred rupees: completeness. This is the first band where a whole working system fits inside the gift rather than being implied by it. The Boond ultrasonic diffuser at eight hundred and ninety-nine rupees with the water-based Hotel Collection concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine is one thousand one hundred and ninety-eight complete, three to six drops per tank. A 130ml reed diffuser from one thousand two hundred and forty-nine is the duration version at this level. And the Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five is the gift that divides - three 12ml attars, one each, chosen by them. The rule that starts here and never relaxes: never give a machine alone. A device with nothing to run in it is a shopping instruction in good packaging, handed to two people whose list is already longer than their day. The three systems do not interchange - reed diffusers use reed oil and rattan, ultrasonic machines take the water-based concentrate, the waterless nebuliser runs undiluted oil - and reed oil must never go into a machine. Step four, two thousand five hundred rupees: full size, or months of supply. The Sukoon at one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a five hundred millilitre machine with a timer, complete at two thousand one hundred and ninety-eight with the fifteen millilitre concentrate. Or spend the same money on duration instead: a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine with a three hundred millilitre refill at two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine is a gift still working long after everything else from that season has gone. Which route depends on the household - a machine needs somebody to fill it, switch it on and top it up, and a reed diffuser needs nobody at all. Step five, five thousand rupees: a finished space. At this level you stop improving and start completing, which means supplying everything a single space needs so nobody has to buy anything for it again for a long time. A 130ml reed diffuser from one thousand two hundred and forty-nine with a five hundred millilitre refill at three thousand four hundred and ninety-nine is four thousand seven hundred and forty-eight and needs one minute of involvement in total. A hotel-inspired set is four thousand four hundred and ninety-nine. A complete Sukoon with the three hundred millilitre concentrate at one thousand seven hundred and ninety-nine is three thousand six hundred and ninety-eight. And for the car, the SOSA Safar waterless diffuser at three thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine, with nebuliser refills at one thousand and forty-nine per hundred grams and one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine per three hundred. The Hotel Collection's seven registers are Quiet Luxury, White Tea Serenity, Forest Suite, Old-World Glamour, Tea Garden, Warm Welcome and Lobby Bar; these are SOSA's own interpretations and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Three things that are true at every step. Returns flatten around fifteen hundred rupees, because what this household needs is duration and simplicity and both are cheap - above that, the honest way to spend more is months rather than size. Nothing should need assembling, positioning or deciding about at any price. And timing outperforms budget outright: everything they receive arrives in the first fortnight when they can least absorb it and stops dead at about six weeks, so a three hundred and seventy-nine rupee gift at week seven is the only thing in the room while a three thousand rupee gift on day three is one parcel in a stack of twenty. To be plain about the range: SOSA makes no products for babies or children, and nothing at any price here is intended for a nursery, a cot, a pram or a baby's belongings. Everything on this ladder is for the two adults.

1
Steps one and two
Breadth, then duration
Under ₹500 almost every format that works is available, because what suits their life is small and undemanding. At ₹1,000 the extra money buys a reed diffuser that keeps working without anybody remembering it.
Tip: Honest floor: ₹299 for concentrate, but only if they own an ultrasonic diffuser.
2
Steps three and four
Completeness, then supply
₹1,500 is the first band where a whole working system fits - Boond ₹899 with concentrate ₹299. ₹2,500 buys the full-size Sukoon complete at ₹2,198, or a diffuser with a 300ml refill at ₹2,399.
3
Step five
A finished space
You stop improving and start completing - everything a single space needs, so nobody buys anything for it again. ₹4,748 for a 130ml diffuser with a 500ml refill, or the SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 for the car.
Tip: Never a machine alone, at any step. And timing outperforms every step of this ladder.
The SOSA principle
Each step adds a property the step below could not provide. Knowing which property you are buying makes the decision much faster.
Returns flatten around Rs 1,500 - above that, the honest way to spend more is months rather than size.

A note from Sonal

When somebody has a baby, the gifts arrive in a wave and almost every one of them is for the baby. Clothes the child outgrows in six weeks, toys for an age they have not reached, blankets in a cupboard that already has nine. It is all kind and it is all well meant. But two adults have just gone through something enormous, and by the end of the first month neither of them has received a single thing addressed to them.

That is the whole reason this section exists. We do not make anything for babies, and nothing we sell is meant for a nursery or for a child's things - we make fragrance for adults. What we can do is give somebody an answer when they say: everybody is buying for the baby, what do I give her, or him, or the two of them. Usually the answer is something small, consumable and completely undemanding, because a new parent has no free hands, no spare surface and no appetite for anything that needs setting up.

One honest thing. If the person you are buying for is pregnant, be careful with personal fragrance. A great many people find that what they want to be near changes during those months, and a bottle somebody cannot go near is a worse gift than nothing at all - so either choose something for their home or their car, or let them pick it themselves later. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and tell us who the adult is and what you know about them, and we will tell you honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
