What if it smells of paint or new furniture? Air it out first - open windows, let it breathe. A diffuser scents a room but does not clear paint fumes or purify air. Once the space is aired, a clean diffuser scent gives it a fresh, lived-in character.
Which diffuser for a new flat? A Sukoon (500ml) is the ideal all-rounder for a bedroom or living room. If you want one machine for a bigger open-plan flat, a Megh (6L) covers more and also humidifies dry AC air. Both ship with three scents to start.
Why a blank new home feels unlived-in
A new apartment that smells of nothing has a strange, hotel-lobby-before-check-in quality to it. Part of what makes a place feel like home is scent - it is the fastest sense to trigger a feeling of belonging. So the single most effective thing you can do in a new flat, once the boxes are unpacked, is give it a signature smell. Not a heavy one; a clean, welcoming one that quietly says someone lives here and looks after the place.
For a new place I always start soft and universally liked, because you will be living in it every day and you want it to wear well. Quiet Luxury - my Ritz-Carlton-inspired white tea, bergamot and cedar - is clean, refined and calming, a lovely everyday signature. White Tea Serenity - my Westin-inspired white tea, aloe and cedar - is the spa-clean, airy option if you want the flat to feel fresh and open. Both are water-based, so a few drops in a diffuser mist cleanly and leave no residue on new floors or furniture.
A brand-new home is a blank canvas. Start with a clean, gentle signature you will not tire of, rather than the boldest scent on the shelf - you have to live with it every day.
Airing out first, then choosing the machine
One honest caveat: if your new flat smells of fresh paint, varnish or new furniture, air it out before you scent it. Open the windows, let it breathe for a few days. A cool-mist diffuser adds fragrance and welcome humidity, but it is not an air purifier and will not clear paint fumes - those are two different jobs, and I would rather tell you that than have you mask something you should ventilate. Once the place is aired, pick the diffuser to fit it: a Sukoon (500ml) is the all-round choice for a bedroom or living room, and a Megh (6L) suits a larger open-plan flat and doubles as a humidifier for AC-dry air.
| Your new flat | Diffuser | Starter scent |
|---|---|---|
| Studio / one room | Boond (300ml) | Quiet Luxury |
| 1-2 BHK, main room | Sukoon (500ml) | White Tea Serenity |
| Large / open-plan | Megh (6L) | Quiet Luxury or Warm Welcome |
"There is a paint smell, so I will run the diffuser strong to cover it." Please do not. A diffuser scents a room; it does not remove fumes. Ventilate first. And never add raw fragrance or essential oil to the tank to make it stronger - thick oils clog the misting plate. Air the room, then let a few drops of water-based fragrance do the welcoming."
These are hotel-inspired interpretations - my own take on the clean, welcoming style great hotels are known for, not their actual proprietary scents, and SOSA is not affiliated with them. But moving into a new home is the perfect moment to choose a signature you love. Start clean, keep it consistent, and your empty new flat will feel like yours within a day.

Versailles
I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.
They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.
One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.
