After the monsoon your apartment smells musty because weeks of trapped humidity have soaked into walls, fabrics and cupboards and let mildew take hold - so the fix is to ventilate, dehumidify and dry first, and to freshen only once the place is properly dry. Here is the honest part I need you to hear early: do not reach for a humidifier to fight a damp smell, because adding moisture feeds the exact problem. I am Sonal, and this is the order I would follow in my own Pune flat.
Quick answers — read this first
Why does my apartment smell after the monsoon? Weeks of high humidity have soaked into walls, wood and fabric, and mildew has started to grow. That damp, earthy smell is the mildew - a moisture problem, not a fragrance one.

Should I use a humidifier to fix a musty smell? No. A humidifier adds moisture, which is exactly what mildew needs. To fix damp you must remove moisture - ventilate, dehumidify and dry - not add it.

When can I use a diffuser? Once the apartment is properly dry and aired. Then a cool-mist diffuser freshens the recovered room. It is the last step, not the first.
The short answer
Root cause: trapped monsoon humidity has fed mildew in walls, wood and fabric.
Do NOT humidify: adding moisture feeds the damp - a humidifier makes a musty smell worse.
Fix first: ventilate on dry days, run a dehumidifier or AC dry mode, dry out fabrics and cupboards.
Freshen last: once fully dry, a SOSA cool-mist diffuser lightly freshens the aired room.
Which SOSA diffuser by room (live specs)Boond ₹799 — 300ml, desk/bedside, up to 6 hrsSukoon ₹1799 — 500ml, bedroom, 16-18 hrs, remote+lightMegh ₹3499 — 6L, whole room, up to 100 hrs
Illustrative only. Match tank and runtime to the room: Boond for a desk, Sukoon for a bedroom, Megh for a living room or dry winter air.
Straight answer
Why does my apartment smell musty after the monsoon, and what fixes it?
It smells because months of high humidity have driven moisture deep into plaster, wood, upholstery and cupboards, and mildew has quietly colonised the damp. That earthy, wet-cardboard smell is the mildew itself. The fix is to remove the moisture: open up on dry days, run a dehumidifier or your AC on dry mode, and dry out every fabric and enclosed space. Fragrance cannot dry a wall. And a warning I want you to read twice - do not use a humidifier to mask the smell. A humidifier adds water to the air, which is exactly what the mildew wants. Dry the home, then freshen it.
Damp smell equals too much moisture. Remove moisture, never add it - then freshen the dried room.
When the flat is properly dry, a SOSA cool-mist diffuser brings back a clean, hotel-fresh scent.

Dry it out first - and do not humidify

Every year after the rains I hear the same thing: the flat smells like a damp cupboard. That smell is mildew, and mildew is a straightforward equation - it needs moisture to live. So the entire first phase is about taking moisture away, not covering the smell.

The one thing to get right
You cannot perfume your way out of damp. Remove the water first.
A musty smell is a signal that moisture is still present. Ventilating and drying is not the boring prelude to the fix - it is the fix.
1
Dry it out
Ventilate hard on dry days
Throw the windows open and get cross-breeze moving the moment the weather turns dry. Run exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom. Open cupboard doors, pull furniture off damp walls, and let stale, wet air out and drier air in. On humid days, keep windows shut and dry the air indoors instead.
2
Dry it out
Dehumidify and dry the fabrics
Run a dehumidifier, or your AC on dry mode, to pull humidity out of the air. Sun-dry or machine-dry curtains, cushions, rugs and bedding that have gone damp. Wipe any visible mildew on walls with a diluted cleaning solution and let it dry fully. Keep moisture absorbers in cupboards.
Read this twice
Do not run a humidifier to fight a musty smell. A humidifier - or a diffuser used purely to pump out mist into an already-damp room - adds the exact moisture mildew feeds on. In monsoon-humid conditions your priority is drier air, not wetter. Save the fragrance for after the flat is dry.

Freshen the dried room

Once the apartment is properly dry - walls, fabrics, cupboards, the lot - and the mildew smell is gone rather than masked, you can bring scent back. This is the moment a diffuser is the right tool, not a mistake.

A SOSA cool-mist diffuser with a few drops of water-based Hotel Collection fragrance gives a dried room that clean, restful hotel scent. In an already-dry indoor climate the small amount of humidity a diffuser adds is fine and even pleasant. The important word is dry first - you are freshening a recovered room, not battling live damp.

Right order
Dry, then scent
Stage Do this Do NOT
While it is still musty Ventilate, dehumidify, dry Run a humidifier
Visible mildew Clean and dry the surface Spray fragrance over it
Once fully dry Diffuse a clean scent Assume scent alone cured it

And the usual honest caveat: use only SOSA water-based fragrance in the tank - raw essential and carrier oils can clog the ultrasonic plate. A diffuser scents air; it does not purify it or remove mildew. Dry the home, then let the fragrance make it feel new again.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer at ISIPCA in Versailles, but half the questions we get are not about scent at all - they are about the machine. Indian rooms are bone-dry from AC and winter, and most gadget diffusers are too small, too loud, or quit by midnight. So we made three: Boond (300ml, desk), Sukoon (500ml, bedroom, with a remote and mood light) and Megh (6L, whole-room), each shipping with three of our fragrances.

They are cool-mist ultrasonic diffusers - an ultrasonic plate turns water into a fine, cool mist with no heating element, so there is no boiling water or burn risk, and each has an auto shut-off when the tank runs dry.

One thing I say on every listing and will say here: use only SOSA's water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. Raw essential oils, perfumes and carrier oils are thick or solvent-heavy and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. A few drops of our water-based fragrance in the tank mists cleanly and scents the whole room.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my apartment smell musty after the rainy season?
Weeks of high humidity have soaked into walls, wood and fabrics and let mildew grow. That earthy smell is the mildew. It is a moisture problem, so drying the home out is what actually fixes it.
Should I use a humidifier or diffuser to cover a damp smell?
No - not while it is still damp. Adding moisture feeds mildew and makes the smell worse. Ventilate, dehumidify and dry first. Only once the apartment is fully dry should you use a diffuser to freshen it.
How long before I can use fragrance again?
Until the musty smell is gone rather than masked, and the walls, cupboards and fabrics feel dry to the touch. In a humid stretch that can take several dry, well-ventilated days. Then freshen the aired room.
Can I put essential oils in the diffuser for a stronger effect?
No. Raw essential oils are too thick for an ultrasonic diffuser and can clog the misting plate and damage the unit. Use only SOSA water-based Hotel Collection fragrance, a few drops in the tank.
Does a diffuser remove mildew or purify the air?
No. A cool-mist diffuser adds fragrance and a little humidity - it does not remove mildew or purify air. Cleaning, drying and ventilation deal with the damp; the diffuser is the finishing scent once the room is dry.
