At the sofa end, against an inner wall, as far from the hob as the room physically allows. In a 1BHK where the kitchen, the dining table and the sofa share one volume of air, you do not have three rooms to scent — you have one room with three jobs, and it takes one bottle placed at one end. The distance matters more than anything else you will decide: in a typical one-room 1BHK that is three to four metres, roughly ten to twelve feet, which in practice means the far side of the dining table from the hob and never the same run of counter. The kitchen end is the hot end, the extracted end and the end nobody sits at. Buy one Mountain Breeze 130ml at ₹1,349 and put it there, on a tray, at waist-to-chest height.
Quick answers — read this first
The sofa end, not the middle and not the kitchen. Furthest usable surface from the hob, interior wall, waist-to-chest, on a tray.

Far enough means the far side of the dining table — ten to twelve feet from the burner in most one-room 1BHKs, which is all the separation the flat has.

One connected air space takes one source. Not one each for the kitchen, the dining and the sofa: the air does not know where your furniture is.

Buy for duration: Mountain Breeze 130ml ₹1,349 runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for a 50ml at ₹749. At six reeds the two project identically.
The short answer
Short answer: the sideboard, console or side table nearest the sofa, on the interior wall, at waist-to-chest height, on a tray. That is the point with the greatest distance from the hob and the least moving air, and the only part of the flat where you are stationary for hours. One Mountain Breeze 130ml at ₹1,349; or Morning Freshness 50ml at ₹749 to learn the room first.
The mechanism: oil climbs six fibre reeds by capillary action and evaporates off the exposed length at a fixed, low rate. Where the bottle stands decides two things — how quickly the oil leaves, and where the vapour goes. The kitchen end is warmer, which raises the evaporation rate, and it sits under an extractor whose purpose is to pull air out of the room. A bottle there spends itself into a duct. The sofa end is cooler, stiller and occupied, so the same output has somewhere to settle and someone present to register it.
Straight answer
Where does the reed diffuser go in a 1BHK where the kitchen, dining and living room are one space?
1. The sofa end, at the furthest point from the hob the room allows. Not the middle, not the counter, not the dining table. A one-room 1BHK has three to four metres to give — ten to twelve feet — and you should use all of it.

2. "Far enough", in practice: the far side of the dining table. On the same run of counter as the burner, or on the kitchen side of the table, is the wrong half of the room.

3. Interior wall, waist-to-chest height, clear air around the reeds. Console height rather than floor level, and never boxed into a recess where the vapour sits in a pocket.

4. Out of the extractor's pull and out of the balcony line. A chimney does not distinguish between cooking air and fragrance vapour; it removes both.

5. One connected space takes one source, not one per function. A counter, a rug and a curtain divide the room for your eyes only.

6. Buy for duration rather than reach. 130ml at ₹1,349 runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8, and at six reeds the two project the same. Size is the duration control; reed count is the volume control.

7. If the zone is genuinely long — a 300 sq ft L, or a studio — add a second source, not a bigger bottle. Two 50ml at opposite ends beat one 130ml in the middle, because output per bottle is fixed. The Fresh & Grounded duo at ₹1,548 is that purchase, and its two compositions meet on green eucalyptus so there is no seam in the middle. Stand either on a tray — the oil marks wood and stone.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C summer heat and 85% monsoon humidity, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: one bottle at the sofa end, on the far side of the dining table from the hob — ten to twelve feet, inner wall, waist-to-chest, on a tray. The kitchen end is hot, extracted and empty of people; the sofa end is cool, still and occupied. Buy Mountain Breeze 130ml ₹1,349, or 50ml ₹749 to start.

For the far end of a one-room flat
SOSA Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹1,349 / 130ml
Pine and sage over Indian cedar — the driest, greenest composition in the range, and the one I would choose for a room with a working hob in it. Nothing sweet or edible in it, so it stays legible as a separate thing rather than blurring into whatever was cooked at seven. The 130ml runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8 for the 50ml at ₹849, which matters here because you are running one bottle continuously rather than three intermittently. It is not a stronger bottle: at six reeds the two sizes project identically, since reach comes from exposed reed surface rather than reservoir size. 9.4 on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds — our scale, not an industry standard. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds, alcohol-free and phthalate-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier. Flip weekly with gloves, out of direct sun, on a tray.

Part one — one air space, three functions

The mistake in one-room flats is not a fragrance mistake. It is a floor-plan mistake: people place the bottle by function — something for the kitchen, something for the sitting area — when the only thing that matters is volume. Your flat has a kitchen, a dining table and a sofa. Your air has none of those things. Everything below follows from that.

1
THE COUNT · YOU BUY PER CLOSED AIR SPACE, NOT PER FUNCTION
A breakfast counter, a rug and a curtain divide the room for your eyes and not for the air
Count the doors you shut, and add one for the open zone. In your flat that arithmetic gives two: the bedroom, and everything else. The everything-else is one purchase. A half-height counter between the hob and the dining table changes nothing about how vapour moves; neither does a console, a bookcase or the change in flooring the builder used to suggest a boundary. This is good news — it is why a one-room 1BHK is cheaper to scent than a 2BHK of the same area. You are not under-buying by putting one bottle in a room with three functions.
The count: doors you close, plus one for the open zone — two bottles for the whole flat, not four.
2
THE HOB END · HOT, EXTRACTED, AND EMPTY OF PEOPLE
Three separate things are working against a bottle at the kitchen end, and they compound
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser, bright citrus and eucalyptus, for a one-room flatMorning Freshness₹749 · 50mlFirst, heat. A hob, an oven and the top of a fridge all keep their surroundings warmer than the rest of the room, and warmth raises the rate at which oil leaves the reeds — a duration effect. Second, extraction. A chimney exists to pull air out of the room, and it cannot tell the difference between cooking air and fragrance vapour. A bottle within its reach is being emptied through a duct. Third, and least discussed, occupancy: you stand at the hob for twenty minutes and then you leave, and a constant low level only registers on somebody present and still.
The test: if you can reach the bottle while stirring, it is too close.
3
THE SOFA END · WHY THIS HALF OF THE ROOM WINS
The still end, the cool end, and the only end where anybody sits long enough to notice a plateau
The sofa end has three properties the kitchen end does not. It is the coolest part of the room, because nothing in it generates heat. It has the least moving air, being furthest from the extractor, the hob and usually the balcony door. And it is where somebody sits still for two or three hours in the evening, which is the condition a passive diffuser is built for. A reed diffuser is not an event; it is a level, and levels are noticed by people sitting inside them or walking in from outside. A fourth reason is practical: consoles and side tables are not cleared for meals, and a bottle that stays put for six weeks outperforms one that travels twice a day.

Part two — every surface in the room, ranked by distance

Walk your flat with this. It ranks the surfaces of one open-plan room by distance from the hob, which in this layout is the only ranking that matters.

The one-room audit · sorted by distance from the burner
Where you were going to put it, what that spot does, and the verdict
Where in the one room Roughly how far from the hob Why it works or fails Verdict
Console, sideboard or side table at the sofa end, inner wall ★ The full length of the room — ten to twelve feet in a typical 1BHK Coolest, stillest, occupied for hours, never cleared The answer. Waist-to-chest, on a tray
TV unit or the shelf beside it Similar distance, but often lower down Good distance, but usually knee-level, where vapour has nowhere to travel Second best — use the upper shelf
The dining table, in the middle Halfway — the centre of the zone Moved at every meal, in the walking line, low and in the busiest air No. Convenience, not placement
Sideboard on the dining wall, sofa side Two-thirds of the way down Genuinely usable — stationary, waist height, out of the traffic Yes, if there is no console at the sofa end
Breakfast counter or the kitchen-facing edge An arm's length from the burner Warm, splashed, and inside the extractor's pull No — the fastest drain in the flat
Top of the fridge In the kitchen, whatever the plan says Warm all day because the appliance is working, and boxed into dead air No. The most-used bad surface there is
Windowsill or the balcony-door edge Varies — but always in the exchange Sun warms the oil; the open door carries vapour outside No — you would be scenting the balcony
The honest caveat: ten to twelve feet is what a one-room 1BHK has to give, and it describes typical flats rather than a specification. No distance keeps cooking out of the sitting end — a reed diffuser adds a fragrance alongside whatever else is in the air and removes nothing. Distance decides how much of your bottle survives the extractor and where the vapour settles, not what your dinner smells like.

The bottle for the sofa end, and the tray under it
The SOSA principle
Furniture divides a room for the eye and does nothing to the air. Place the bottle by distance from the hob and by where people sit still — never by which function you are trying to serve.
One connected air space, one source. If the space is long, add a second source at the other end — not a bigger bottle in the middle.

Part three — what placement will not do here

Moving the bottle to the sofa end is free and the most useful thing you can do in this layout. It is not a solution to three other problems, and I would rather name them than let you find them in week three. The first is that a reed diffuser cannot do anything about cooking. It adds a fragrance alongside what is already in your air; it removes, neutralises, absorbs, masks and purifies nothing, and no distance changes that. The sequence that works costs nothing: extractor on before the pan gets hot, window open ten minutes afterwards, then close up. If the collision between food and fragrance is what worries you, that is a question about notes, and it has a page of its own.

The second is size. Output per bottle is fixed, and no position makes one bottle behave like two. Past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected volume — a long L, or a studio where the bed shares the zone — you are asking one source to cover a space it was not built for. The answer is another source rather than a larger one: two 50ml at opposite ends beat one 130ml in the middle, which is why the Fresh & Grounded duo at ₹1,548 exists. And if what you want is the room scented at a particular hour, reeds are the wrong tool and a Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest recommendation — control, not strength, and an ultrasonic adds moisture by aerosolising water where a reed diffuser adds none.

The third is your own nose, and it is the one people spend money on by mistake. In a one-room flat you are inside your chosen fragrance from the moment you wake, which is the hardest condition for noticing it. You stop registering a constant smell in a room you live in — ordinary olfactory adaptation, worst at home, and no technique resets it on demand. Before concluding the bottle is finished, run two free checks: leave the flat for an hour and walk back in, and ask whoever visits next what they notice at the door. The first three days of a new bottle are the loudest it will ever be — freshly soaked reeds, the lightest top notes leaving at once — then a settle, then a plateau that holds to the end. The plateau is the product.

Your flat has three functions and one body of air. Place the bottle for the air, and the functions look after themselves.

Honest notes for buyers: a reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room. It does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels. It adds no moisture; ultrasonic machines deliver fragrance by aerosolising water and therefore do. Longevity figures — 6–8 weeks for 50ml, 14–18 weeks for 130ml at six reeds — are typical ranges rather than guarantees and vary with warmth, airflow and reed count. Warmth raises the evaporation rate and moving air carries vapour away; both are directions of effect, and distances quoted describe typical one-room flats rather than specifications. Size is the duration control and reed count the volume control; a bigger bottle buys weeks, never metres. SOSA has no 100ml reed diffuser — the sizes are 50ml and 130ml. Refills are oil only, so you reuse your own vessel and reeds, and replacement reeds are not sold separately. Reed oil never goes into a machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep bottles away from the hob and any open flame, out of direct sunlight, on a tray, and out of reach of children and pets. Totals are arithmetic on listed prices. Made in Pune; free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Fresh and Grounded reed diffuser duo for two ends of one open-plan room
When one room is too long for one source
SOSA Fresh & Grounded duo · Morning Freshness + Mountain Breeze ₹1,548 / 2 × 50ml
Two bottles, two ends, one space — the purchase for an open plan past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected volume. Output per bottle is fixed, so the only way to raise the total in a room is another source; a larger bottle buys weeks, not metres. The reason these two are sold together is the seam: Morning Freshness and Mountain Breeze share a green eucalyptus thread, so where they meet in the middle you get a blend rather than a change of subject. Put the bright one nearer the working half and the dry one at the sitting end. Both run 6–8 weeks at six reeds and both take the same oil-only refill, 300ml ₹2,399 — roughly ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml. The 2 × 130ml version is ₹2,548.

A note from Sonal

The first flat I lived in alone had exactly this plan: four burners, a two-seater table and a sofa in one rectangle, with a balcony door at one end I kept open. I put my first bottle on the kitchen counter, because that was where the clear space was. It was gone in five weeks and the room never smelled of it unless I stood over it.

What I learned there is what this page is built on. A reed diffuser is not a device you point at a problem; it is a level you set in a volume of air. If that level is drawn off by an extractor at one end and out of a balcony door at the other, what is in the bottle hardly matters. Move it to the quietest, coolest, most-sat-in corner of the same room and nothing about the product changes — but everything about the room does.

One-room flats are also where the temptation to over-sell is strongest, because the reader sees the whole space at once and feels they should cover all of it. They should not. One connected volume takes one source, and the honest upgrade for a long zone is a second bottle at the far end rather than a bigger one in the middle. If your kitchen, dining and sofa are one room, you are buying two bottles for the whole flat — one here, one behind the bedroom door. Made in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put one reed diffuser in the kitchen area and another by the sofa?
Not where they share one volume of air. Two sources in one space is a decision about length, not function — worth making past roughly 250–300 sq ft, and then they go at opposite ends rather than one per activity. In a normal great room, one bottle at the sofa end is correct.
How far from the hob is far enough?
As far as the room allows, which in most one-room 1BHKs is ten to twelve feet. The practical rule is the far side of the dining table: if the bottle is on the kitchen side of it, or on the same run of counter as the burner, move it. That distance protects the bottle from heat and from the extractor's pull. It does not keep cooking out of the sitting end, and nothing sold as home fragrance does.
Is a 130ml stronger than a 50ml in a big open room?
No. At six reeds the two sizes project the same, because reach comes from exposed reed surface rather than from how much oil sits underneath. The 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349 buys 14–18 weeks against 6–8 — duration, not distance. More reach means another source.
Can I keep it on the dining table if that is the only clear surface?
You can, though it is the surface most likely to defeat you in practice: cleared at every meal, in the walking line, and low. If it is the only option, keep it at the sofa-side end of the table, on a tray, and try not to move it.
Should the kitchen have its own bottle for when I am cooking?
No. It is one air space, so a second bottle adds cost rather than coverage — and fragrance layered over live cooking produces a third smell nobody designed. Extractor on, window open ten minutes afterwards, close up, and let the bottle at the far end carry on.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, on where a reed diffuser should stand in a 1BHK whose kitchen, dining and living areas share one volume of air. Placement effects are given as directions — warmth raises the evaporation rate, extraction and moving air carry vapour away — with no rate or timescale claimed. Distances describe typical Indian one-room flats rather than specifications, and longevity ranges are typical rather than guaranteed.
