Why does the distinction matter? Because gifts for a house that gets shown are chosen to be seen, and gifts for a house that gets lived in are chosen for ordinary evenings.
What makes scheduling the feature here? The Vaayu's Bluetooth app and timers let the house be scented at the hours they are actually in it, which is what somebody who loves their home notices.
Loving a home is not the same as decorating one
It is worth separating two people who look identical from the outside. The first is proud of their house and shows it: the furniture was chosen to be seen, the coffee table is arranged, and when people come over the house performs. Gifts for that person are display gifts, and there is nothing wrong with them. The second person is different and much more common than gift guides assume. They simply like being at home. They know which chair gets the four o'clock light. They have a way of making the evening feel like it has begun. Nobody else is involved in any of it. If you are buying for the second person, almost every luxury home gift is aimed at the wrong audience, because the whole premium home category is built around impressing a room full of guests, and this recipient's best hours have no guests in them. Fragrance is unusually well suited to that recipient, and for a specific reason: it is the only element of a house that is experienced by whoever is inside rather than by whoever is looking. A beautiful object is seen by visitors and stops being noticed by the person who owns it within a fortnight. A smell works the other way round. Visitors register it faintly and forget; the person living there walks into it two or three times a day, every day, and keeps noticing it for months. That asymmetry is what makes it a genuinely personal gift rather than a decorative one. The practical decision is about the size of the house, and it should be made before anything else. The SOSA Vaayu at eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a waterless cold-air nebuliser rated for up to a thousand cubic metres, which the product states as about two thousand to three thousand square feet. That is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan four or five bedroom flat, or a house with a double-height room. If the home is smaller than that, the machine is not a superior version of a reed diffuser, it is the wrong size of thing, and a reed diffuser is the honest gift: Morning Freshness at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees for fifty millilitres or one thousand two hundred and forty-nine for one hundred and thirty, Malabar lemon with peppermint and eucalyptus; Garden Bloom and Evening Calm at seven hundred and ninety-nine and one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine, British rose with night jasmine and lavender with chamomile respectively; Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew at eight hundred and forty-nine and one thousand three hundred and forty-nine, Himalayan pine with sage and cedar, and Coorg coffee with Kerala vanilla. Where the house is large enough, the feature that matters for this particular recipient is not the coverage figure. It is the scheduling. The Vaayu is controlled from a Bluetooth app or the buttons on the unit, with run windows of one, four, eight or twenty-four hours, day selection and adjustable intensity. Read that as a person rather than as a spec sheet and it means the house can smell of something from six in the evening, when they get in, and of nothing at four in the morning. It means a Sunday can be scented differently from a Wednesday. It means the register can be stronger in the hall and gentler when the machine runs at night, because intensity is adjustable. Somebody who loves their home is precisely the person who will use that, and who will enjoy having set it up. The person who merely wants the house to impress will leave it on a default forever. Two more properties matter for daily living rather than for display. It is waterless: pressurised air breaks undiluted oil into a dry nano-mist, so there is no water tank to fill, no humidity added in a monsoon month, and no oily film on shelves or near electronics. And it runs at under thirty-eight decibels, quiet enough that it disappears - which for somebody who spends evenings at home is not a minor point, since a device you can hear is a device you eventually switch off. The four hundred millilitre tank runs for weeks rather than days, it lies flat on a shelf or mounts on a wall, and it ships with four one hundred millilitre hotel-inspired oils included, so it works the evening it is opened rather than after a consumable has been ordered. Refills afterwards are the waterless nebuliser refills at one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred - not the water-based Hotel Collection, which is a separate system for ultrasonic machines. There are two honest cautions. The first is that a machine is a commitment: a place to put it, a decision about where, and refills eventually. Somebody who loves their home but hates devices is better served by reed diffusers, and the duo sets at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight rupees let two rooms be different, which is a real pleasure for this recipient and asks nothing of them. The second is timing. If the home is new, it smells of paint, varnish, polish and new wood for several weeks, and those want open windows rather than fragrance. Give the gift whenever the occasion is; say that the scenting starts once the house has finished smelling of being built. Fragrance is a finishing touch, never a fix - and in a house somebody loves, the finishing touch is the whole point.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
