Is it too personal a gift? No. Less personal than perfume, because it ships with four oils to choose between and the scent can be changed at any time.
What is the alternative at a lower level? Reed diffusers at Rs 749 to Rs 1,349, or duo sets from Rs 1,498, which carry no obligation at all.
Two different worries, and only one of them is real
Take the money question first, because it is the real one. Eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a substantial gift in most relationships, and the awkwardness it can create is not about whether the recipient can afford it. It is about reciprocity. A present at that level, given where the relationship does not carry it, quietly asks for something comparable in return, and the recipient works that out within a few seconds of understanding what it cost. So the cost question is answered by the relationship rather than by the product. It works without any awkwardness from a spouse, a parent to a child or a child to a parent, a sibling, a friend of twenty years, or a group of people pooling for something significant - a housewarming for close friends, a retirement, a fiftieth. It also works from a business to a client in some contexts, though that is its own conversation. What it does not suit is a colleague, an acquaintance, a new friendship, or any situation where the recipient might feel they now owe something. In those, reed diffusers at seven hundred and forty-nine to one thousand three hundred and forty-nine rupees, or a duo set at one thousand four hundred and ninety-eight to two thousand five hundred and ninety-eight, are a genuinely good gift and carry no obligation whatsoever. A pooled gift is the underused answer. Five people at two thousand four hundred rupees each reaches a machine comfortably, and a group gift removes the reciprocity problem entirely because no individual is exposed. For a milestone housewarming among a close group, that is the natural form. Now the intimacy question, which is where the assumption is backwards. People treat fragrance as personal because they are thinking of perfume, and perfume genuinely is: you choose a scent for somebody to wear on their skin, which is a statement about how you think they should smell, and if they dislike it they are stuck with either wearing something they do not like or telling you. That is a real risk and it is why perfume is a difficult gift. A scent machine is not that. Three things make it structurally less presumptuous. First, it arrives with four different one hundred millilitre oils included, which means the recipient makes the choice rather than receiving one. You are giving the capability, not the verdict. Second, the scent is changeable at any time and permanently: refills are one thousand and forty-nine rupees for a hundred grams or one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine for three hundred, so nothing about the gift locks them into a register. If they dislike all four, they buy a fifth and the machine is unaffected. Third, and most straightforwardly, it is not on their body. It is a property of the house, closer in kind to a lamp or a thermostat than to a bottle of perfume, and nobody feels judged by a thermostat. There is one way a machine can be too personal, and it is worth naming because it is avoidable: choosing where it goes. A gift that arrives already installed on somebody's wall, in a spot you picked, in their house, is an intrusion. Hand it over, mention that it lies flat on a shelf or mounts on a wall, and let them decide. The same applies to the settings - the Bluetooth app with one, four, eight and twenty-four hour windows and adjustable intensity exists so that they can dial it in, and setting it up to your preference before handing it over takes the interesting part away from them. There is a third question hiding behind both of these and it matters more than either: whether the machine is right for their home at all. The Vaayu is rated for up to a thousand cubic metres, which the product states as roughly two thousand to three thousand square feet. That is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan four or five bedroom flat, or a house with a double-height room. In an ordinary two or three bedroom flat it is the wrong size of product, and no amount of relationship closeness makes it right. In that case the answer to both of the questions in this title is the same: buy reed diffusers, which are neither too expensive nor too personal nor too much machine. Two last points. A machine is a commitment - a place, a plug or a wall, and refills eventually - so somebody who is renting, who dislikes devices, or who would rather nothing in the house needed operating is better served by something passive, and that is a preference rather than a gap. And if the home is new, say that the scenting starts in a few weeks: paint, varnish and polish need open windows rather than fragrance, and a machine switched on into a freshly painted house gives a muddled first impression of a good product. Fragrance is a finishing touch, never a fix.
Expensive is a relationship question. Personal it is not
A relationship question and a false worry.

Versailles
The Vaayu is the most expensive thing we make and we turn down more orders for it than for anything else in the range. Not because we do not want to sell it - because most homes do not need it. It covers up to a thousand cubic metres, roughly two to three thousand square feet, and that is a villa, a penthouse, a large open-plan flat or a house with a double-height room. An ordinary 2BHK is not that, and in an ordinary 2BHK a reed diffuser at seven hundred and forty-nine rupees does the job better than eleven thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine rupees of machine would. So the question we ask is never what somebody spent on their house. It is how many cubic metres of air are in it.
The second thing we say, and almost nobody expects it, is wait a few weeks. A brand-new home smells of paint, varnish, polish, cement and new wood, and those are not smells to cover - they need open windows and time, and they go on their own. Give the machine at the housewarming by all means, but tell them the scenting starts once the building has finished smelling of being built. It is the same rule we apply to a new car, for the same reason: adding fragrance to a smell that is fading anyway is how a good product gets blamed for a bad result.
Two honest limits. Reed diffusers do not fail in large homes, they simply do not reach - a diffuser on a console table scents the area around that console table, which is not a fault, it is physics, and several of them is a real alternative to one machine. And there are two machines above the Vaayu, the Angaan and the Meenar, which are HVAC units for showrooms and hotel floors rather than houses - so if a home is genuinely far beyond three thousand square feet, message us rather than assuming more money solves it.
