Founder Diaries · Reader Question · What ₹749 Buys
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
"Worth it" is not a feeling, it is a fraction, and a fraction needs a denominator. So here are four denominators you can check yourself, and the SOSA numbers that go under them. ₹749 buys between 1,008 and 1,344 continuous hours of fragrance, one weekly flip as its entire maintenance, one closed room of roughly 120–250 sq ft, and a glass object with six fibre reeds that stays out on a shelf rather than living in a cupboard. That is 56 to 74 paise an hour. Cheaper things certainly exist — I sell several of them myself, starting at a ₹379 jar candle — and on the hours measure they are dearer per hour, not cheaper. What I will not do is price, name or characterise anything I do not make. Judge my four numbers, then hold whatever else you are considering against the same four.
Quick answers — read this first
Hours covered. A 50ml at ₹749 runs 6–8 weeks without stopping: 42 to 56 days, or 1,008 to 1,344 hours. ₹749 ÷ 1,344 ≈ ₹0.56 an hour; ₹749 ÷ 1,008 ≈ ₹0.74.

Attention required. One flip of six reeds a week, with gloves — six to eight interventions across the whole bottle. Nothing to switch on, nothing to plug in, nothing to watch.

Room size. One closed room. Roughly 120–250 sq ft is where a single bottle is comfortable; past about 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume it is the wrong tool and the Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the answer.

How it looks. A refillable glass bottle and six reeds, no cord and no flame, which is why it stays out. If none of those four matter to you, a ₹379 candle is the smaller, more honest purchase.
The short answer
Short answer: yes, if what you want is one room scented continuously for six to eight weeks with almost no attention — that is what ₹749 buys, at 56 to 74 paise an hour. Take Morning Freshness 50ml at ₹749. No, if what you want is fragrance for one evening — then a jar candle at ₹379 is the correct purchase and I would rather sell you that.
The mechanism: a reed diffuser has no fan, no heat and no switch. Oil climbs six fibre reeds by capillary action and evaporates off the exposed length, continuously, at a low level, for as long as there is oil in the glass. You are not buying intensity; you are buying uninterrupted hours at a deliberately modest level. That is the only frame in which ₹749 makes sense, and the only frame in which it is a bargain.
Straight answer
Cheaper things exist — so is ₹749 for a reed diffuser justified?
1. Hours covered — the measure most people skip. A 50ml runs 6–8 weeks with nothing switched on: 1,008 to 1,344 hours. ₹749 ÷ 1,344 ≈ 56 paise an hour, ₹749 ÷ 1,008 ≈ 74 paise. The 130ml at ₹1,249 runs 14–18 weeks, or 2,352 to 3,024 hours — 41 to 53 paise an hour.

2. Attention required — count the interventions. Six to eight weekly flips, gloves on, ten seconds each. No socket, no timer, no water to top up, nothing to remember and nothing that can be left burning. A ₹379 candle must be lit and never left unattended; wax melts at ₹474 need a burner that is not included in the price.

3. Room size — one closed room, honestly stated. A single bottle at six reeds is comfortable in roughly 120–250 sq ft with the door usually shut. It does not scale by buying bigger: at six reeds, a 130ml fills the same room as a 50ml and simply does it for longer.

4. How it looks on a shelf. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds, no cord trailing to a socket, no flame, no plastic canister to hide. It is a permanent object in the room rather than something you take out and put away — which is a real part of what you are paying for, and I would rather say so than pretend the price is all performance.

5. The cheaper SOSA options, priced by me since I can price them. Jar candles ₹379 at roughly 15–18 hours — that is ₹379 ÷ 16 ≈ ₹24 an hour. Sandalwood ₹449. Wax melts ₹474 plus a burner. A candle two-pack ₹664 at roughly 30–36 hours — ₹664 ÷ 33 ≈ ₹20 an hour. Cheaper to buy, dearer per hour, and designed for an evening rather than a season.

6. So the verdict, unhedged. If you want continuous low fragrance in one room for weeks, ₹749 is the cheapest way I know to buy it and it is worth it. If you want fragrance for a specific evening, it is not, and ₹379 is your answer.

Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: ₹749 buys 1,008–1,344 continuous hours (56–74 paise an hour), six to eight weekly flips as its whole maintenance, one closed room of roughly 120–250 sq ft, and a glass object that stays on the shelf. Worth it for a season of low constant fragrance; not worth it for one evening, where a ₹379 jar candle is the honest purchase.
SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser 50ml at ₹749 with six fibre reeds
What ₹749 contains, itemised
SOSA Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon, peppermint & Nilgiri eucalyptus ₹749 / 50ml
Fragrance oil, a refillable glass bottle and six fibre reeds — fibre rather than rattan, whose pores clog where the air stays heavy for months. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, paraben-free, low-VOC, IFRA-compliant, on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT carrier, tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity. 6–8 weeks at six reeds, running continuously, with one flip a week as the entire maintenance. 9.0 on SOSA's own internal strength scale at six reeds — our scale, not an industry standard and not a concentration. The 130ml at ₹1,249 runs 14–18 weeks. Stand it on a tray; the oil marks wood and stone.

Part one — the four things that are actually measurable

Most arguments about whether something is worth it fail because nobody names the unit. Adjectives cannot be divided. These four can, and all four can be checked in your own flat with a calendar and a tape measure.

1
HOURS COVERED, NOT UNITS BOUGHT
1,008 to 1,344 continuous hours for ₹749 — 56 to 74 paise each
A reed diffuser is not something you use; it is something that is running whether or not you are in the room. So the denominator is hours, and there are more of them than people expect: 6 weeks is 42 days is 1,008 hours, 8 weeks is 56 days is 1,344. ₹749 across the low end is 74 paise an hour and across the high end 56 paise. Scale it up and the figure improves — ₹1,249 for a 130ml across 14–18 weeks is 2,352 to 3,024 hours, or 41 to 53 paise. That is the arithmetic that turns an ₹749 sticker into a small line in a season.
The check: write the open date on the box. When it empties, count the days and divide the price by days × 24.
2
ATTENTION REQUIRED
Six to eight ten-second flips, and nothing else at all
SOSA Evening Calm reed diffuser 50ml at ₹799Evening Calm₹799 · 50mlCount what a product asks of you, because that is a cost too. Across a whole 50ml bottle the total demand is one flip of six reeds a week — gloves on, both ends coated, ten seconds. There is no socket, no switch, no timer, no tank to top up and nothing that can be left burning when you leave the flat. That last point is not decoration: a candle is a live flame and must be watched, which makes it excellent for an evening and useless for a Tuesday you spend at work. The reed diffuser's entire proposition is that it works when nobody is thinking about it.
3
ROOM SIZE, AND HOW IT LOOKS STANDING THERE
One closed room of roughly 120–250 sq ft, and an object you never put away
Buy per closed air space rather than per square foot: count the doors you shut, and add one for the open zone. One bottle at six reeds is comfortable in roughly 120–250 sq ft with the door usually shut, and past about 250–300 sq ft of connected open volume it is the wrong tool — that is a Sukoon at ₹1,899, which covers 270–320 sq ft. The fourth measure is the least quantitative and the most honest: a glass bottle with six reeds lives permanently on a console or a bathroom shelf, with no cord to a socket and nothing to hide. You are paying for an object as well as for hours, and I would rather write that plainly than call it all performance.
The check: pace the room, multiply, and ask whether the door is usually open. An open-plan hall is not one room.

Part two — the same four measures, side by side

SOSA's own shelf below ₹749, measured on the four denominators rather than on the sticker. Every price and every hour figure here is mine to quote; nothing outside the SOSA range is priced, named or described anywhere on this page. The starred row is the one the question is really about.

Four measures · SOSA products only, priced from the live store
Hours, attention, room and object — for each thing SOSA sells at or below ₹849
What you can buy Hours it runs Cost per hour, shown Attention it needs What it is for
50ml reed diffuser ₹749 ★ 1,008–1,344 continuous ₹749 ÷ 1,344 ≈ ₹0.56 · ÷ 1,008 ≈ ₹0.74 One flip a week, gloves A season of low constant fragrance in one closed room
130ml reed diffuser ₹1,249 2,352–3,024 continuous ₹1,249 ÷ 3,024 ≈ ₹0.41 · ÷ 2,352 ≈ ₹0.53 One flip a week, for four months The same room, reordered twice a year instead of seven times
Jar candle ₹379 Roughly 15–18, only while lit ₹379 ÷ 16 ≈ ₹24 an hour Lit, watched, never left alone One evening, with light and a little warmth
Sandalwood candle ₹449 Comparable jar format, only while lit Higher per hour than any reed bottle Lit and watched A note the reed range does not have at all
Wax melts ₹474 Only while a burner is running Not ₹474 all in — a burner is required and not included A burner, a tealight, supervision Someone who already owns a burner
The honest caveat: hours are not quality, and a low cost per hour does not make one product better than another — it makes it cheaper per hour, which is a narrower claim and the only one I will make. Reed longevity of 6–8 weeks and 14–18 weeks, and candle burn times of roughly 15–18 hours and 30–36 for the two-pack, are typical ranges rather than guarantees; a warm room raises the evaporation rate and empties a bottle sooner, high humidity slows it from the reed surface, and a draught carries scent away from the bottle. Those are directions of effect, not measured rates. Nothing outside the SOSA range is priced, named, rated or described here, and no claim is made about how long any other product lasts. And none of these products cleans, purifies or filters air, or removes any smell — they add a fragrance alongside whatever is already there.

Three answers, at three different denominators
The SOSA principle
Cheap and expensive are sticker words. Per hour, per intervention, per room and per shelf are the four that survive contact with a real flat.
Which cuts against us as often as for us: on three of those four, our own ₹379 candle is the better buy for an evening, and this page says so.

Part three — what ₹749 does not buy

The four measures are the case for the price. Here is the case against it, which is shorter but matters more, because every complaint I read about a reed diffuser is a collision between what it is and what somebody expected. ₹749 does not buy intensity. A reed diffuser is constant, passive and deliberately low — no fan, no heat, no switch — and the first three days, when the reeds are freshly soaked and the top notes are departing, are the loudest it will ever be. What follows is a settle and then a plateau, and the plateau is the product. If you are buying because you want a room that announces itself, ₹749 will disappoint you and so will ₹1,349.

It does not buy fragrance on demand either. There is no on switch and there never will be, which means you cannot have a quiet flat all day and a scented one at eight o'clock. If that is the requirement, the honest product is the Sukoon at ₹1,899 — 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hours on low, remote, steady/2H/4H timers, three 15ml Hotel Collection fragrances in the box — bought for control rather than for strength, with the water-based fragrance as an ongoing consumable at 15ml ₹299, 100ml ₹999 or 300ml ₹1,799. And it does not buy any effect on your air. A reed diffuser adds a fragrance that sits alongside whatever is already there. It does not clean, purify or filter, does not remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, and adds no moisture at all. If a room smells of something you want gone, find the source, ventilate or extract, and add fragrance afterwards.

Finally, ₹749 does not buy every note. The reed range has no oud, no musk-led scent and nothing aquatic; soft musk exists only as a drydown inside Evening Calm and Garden Bloom. If sandalwood or smoked oudh is what you came for, the honest answer is a ₹449 candle, not the nearest reed bottle stretched to cover it. And replacement reeds are not sold separately, so refreshing reeds means a fresh bottle or a set you kept from a previous one — a gap in the range, named here rather than discovered later.

Nobody argues about whether ₹749 is a lot of money. They argue about it because nobody has told them it is 1,344 hours.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — which of the four you are buying

Six readers, each of whom cares most about a different denominator. Two are sent to something under ₹749 and one is sent to a machine, because on their own measure that is the right answer.

Buy on the measure that matters to you
The four denominators, resolved into a purchase
The measure you care about most What to buy The number that justifies it What I would not buy
Hours — you want the room scented all the time ★ Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 1,008–1,344 hours at 56–74 paise each Not a candle — roughly 15–18 hours is a different job
Hours, and you hate reordering 130ml ₹1,249 2,352–3,024 hours at 41–53 paise each Not for reach — at six reeds it fills the same room
Attention — you want to forget it exists Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 One flip a week; nothing to plug in or extinguish Not wax melts — ₹474 plus a burner that is not included
The object — it has to look right on the console Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 Refillable glass, six reeds, no cord, no flame Not a machine — a cord and a socket change the shelf
Outlay — ₹749 is simply more than you want to spend Jar candle ₹379, and no apology needed ₹379 ÷ roughly 16 hours ≈ ₹24 an hour, for an evening Not a reed diffuser bought reluctantly and resented
Control — on when you want it, off when you do not Sukoon ₹1,899 270–320 sq ft, 16–18 hrs on low, timers, remote Not a second reed bottle — passive means no switch
Honest notes for buyers: every price and duration above is a SOSA figure from the live store, and every per-hour number is arithmetic on those figures with the division shown. No competing product or brand is priced, named or rated here, and no claim is made about how long, how strongly or how well anything outside the SOSA range performs. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels. Longevity figures — 6–8 weeks for 50ml, 14–18 for 130ml at six reeds, roughly 15–18 hours for a ₹379 jar candle and 30–36 for the ₹664 two-pack — are typical ranges, not guarantees, and move with warmth, airflow and humidity as directions of effect rather than measured rates. Reed count is the volume control, bottle size the duration control. There is no 100ml reed diffuser; the sizes are 50ml and 130ml. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard. Replacement reeds are not sold separately and refills are oil only. Wax melts require a burner that is not included. Candles are a live flame — never leave one unattended. Fragrance oil is flammable; keep bottles away from open flame and direct sunlight, on a tray, out of reach of children and pets. Made in Pune; free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Misty Mornings scented jar candle at ₹379, roughly 15 to 18 hours
The cheaper thing I would rather sell you
SOSA Misty Mornings · hand-poured jar candle ₹379
If the honest requirement is one evening rather than one season, this is the right purchase and ₹749 is not. Roughly 15–18 hours of burn time, which is about ₹24 an hour — dearer per hour than any reed bottle and completely beside the point, because you are buying light, a little warmth and a defined occasion. It needs lighting, it needs watching, and it must never be left burning in an empty room. The two-pack at ₹664 runs roughly 30–36 hours. Free shipping starts at ₹499, so a single candle will not clear it on its own.

A note from Sonal

I used to answer this question with the ingredient list — the CCT carrier, the phthalate-free composition, the fibre reeds we chose over rattan because rattan clogs in our humidity. All true, all useless to someone standing in a shop deciding whether ₹749 is sensible. An ingredient list is not a denominator.

The change came when a customer in Pune worked it out in front of me on her phone. Fifty-six days, twenty-four hours, one thousand three hundred and forty-four, divided into seven hundred and forty-nine. She looked up and said, so it is about half a rupee an hour, and bought two. I had been selling the chemistry when the arithmetic was doing the work.

What that leaves me with is an obligation to run the same sums when they go the other way. On hours per rupee the reed bottle wins comfortably; on outlay tonight it does not, and our own ₹379 candle is the better answer for an evening. I would rather lose the ₹749 − ₹379 = ₹370 of difference than sell a season to somebody who wanted a Saturday. Made in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours does ₹749 actually buy?
Between 1,008 and 1,344 continuous hours — 6 weeks is 42 days × 24, and 8 weeks is 56 days × 24 — because a reed diffuser runs whether or not anyone is in the room. That is ₹749 ÷ 1,344 ≈ 56 paise an hour at best and ₹749 ÷ 1,008 ≈ 74 paise at worst.
Is the 130ml better value than the 50ml?
On hours, yes: ₹1,249 across 14–18 weeks is 2,352–3,024 hours, or 41–53 paise an hour. On reach, no — at six reeds a 130ml fills the same room as a 50ml. Size buys duration, never distance, and buying up in the hope of a louder room is the commonest way to waste money here.
Why will you not compare this with other brands' air fresheners?
Because I would have to invent their half of the sum, and I would inevitably invent it in my own favour. Nothing outside the SOSA range is priced, named or described anywhere on this page. Take the four measures — hours, attention, room, object — and apply them yourself to whatever else you are considering.
Should I buy a candle instead?
If you want fragrance for a specific evening, yes — a jar candle at ₹379 runs roughly 15–18 hours and gives you light and a defined occasion. It is dearer per hour and that is irrelevant to what it is for. If you want a room that smells of something on a random Tuesday while you are at work, a candle cannot do it and ₹749 can.
What is the one thing ₹749 will not deliver?
A loud room. A reed diffuser is constant, passive and deliberately low; the first three days are the strongest it gets, and the long flat plateau afterwards is the product working, not failing. If you want a room to announce itself, no bottle in the range will do it, and a bigger one will not either.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, breaking "worth it" into four measurable quantities — hours covered, attention required, room size and the object itself. No competing product or brand is priced, named or rated, and no claim is made about how long any non-SOSA product lasts, how far it carries or how it performs. Every price and duration is a SOSA figure from the live store; every per-hour figure is arithmetic on those, with the division shown. Longevity and burn-time figures are typical ranges rather than guarantees, and evaporation effects are given as directions only, with no rate claimed. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard. No claim is made that fragrance cleans air, removes any smell, reduces humidity, or affects health, mood or sleep. No climate figure is quoted for any city; the only test conditions stated are SOSA's own, 45°C and 85% relative humidity. The situation described is a general one readers may recognise and is not drawn from any customer, forum or third-party discussion.

Below ₹749: jar candles ₹379, Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh candle ₹449, wax melts ₹474 (a burner is required and not included), mugs ₹474, bubble and taper candles ₹569, Amber Rose candle ₹599, ceramic trinket dish and candle two-pack ₹664. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room. It does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels. A reed diffuser adds no moisture to the air; ultrasonic machines work by aerosolising water and therefore do. A persistent musty smell indicates moisture that needs finding and drying, and SOSA sells no dehumidifier or air purifier. Ventilate or extract first; add fragrance second. Evaporation rate rises with warmth and falls with humidity, and airflow carries scent away from the bottle — so performance varies with season, ventilation, ceiling height and room use; longevity figures are typical ranges, not guarantees. Not noticing a constant fragrance is ordinary olfactory adaptation; the reliable checks are leaving the room and returning, or asking someone who has just arrived. Strength figures are positions on SOSA’s own internal scale, not an industry standard. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep bottles away from open flame and out of direct sunlight, and out of reach of children and pets. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, India; tested through 45°C summer heat and 85% monsoon humidity. Free shipping above ₹499.
