Founder Diaries · Chennai & Hyderabad · Scent Families in Heat
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 9 min read Updated August 2026
Woody, then citrus, then floral — and the ranking holds only because I am judging all three on a single criterion. The question is not which family is nicest. It is which one still smells like itself when the room has been hot since lunchtime and you walk back into it at five. On that test the dry woody end of the range wins outright, because there is almost no sweetness in it to thicken as the air warms. Citrus is second: brilliant in the morning, settled into its herbal spine rather than its lemon by late afternoon. Floral is third for a room you sit in, because warmth pushes the heavier, sweeter facets of rose and jasmine forward. None is wrong; they are different bets on the same afternoon. The default I would buy is Mountain Breeze at ₹849.
Quick answers — read this first
Woody first. Mountain Breeze ₹849 — Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar. Dry, green, nothing sweet in it to become heavier as the room warms.

Citrus second, with one condition. Morning Freshness ₹749 is the brightest thing in the range; accept that the lemon leads in the morning and the eucalyptus leads by evening.

Floral third for a room you sit in. Garden Bloom ₹799 is better at four reeds in an entryway than at six in a closed hall in summer.

The warm gourmand is out for now. Fresh Brew is the strongest and sweetest in the range. Keep it for cooler months.
The short answer
Short answer: woody. Buy Mountain Breeze 50ml at ₹849 for a hot summer flat, or the 130ml at ₹1,349 if the room is warm all day and you would rather not shop again for four months. If you want bright rather than dry, Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the best citrus case in the range. Choose floral only for a space people pass through, at four reeds.
The mechanism: warmth raises the rate at which materials leave the reed surface, and it does not raise it evenly. The lightest, most volatile materials in a composition — citrus tops, green notes — go first and go sooner in a warm room. What remains is the heavier part of the structure. So heat does not turn a fragrance up; it moves the balance towards whatever the composition's base is made of. A dry woody base changes least, because pine, sage and cedar have no sweetness to intensify. A sweet or heavily floral base changes most, and reads denser in a closed warm room by evening.
Straight answer
Citrus, floral or woody for a hot summer flat — which one and why?
1. Woody, and it is not close on this criterion. Mountain Breeze at ₹849 is Himalayan pine, sage and Indian cedar — dry, green, resinous, with nothing sweet in the structure for warmth to push forward. It is the same fragrance at nine in the morning and at six in the evening.

2. Citrus second, and you should know what you are buying. Morning Freshness at ₹749 is Malabar lemon over peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus. Citrus materials are the lightest in any composition and go first, which a warm room hurries. This one survives it better than a pure citrus would, because the eucalyptus-mint spine underneath is dry and holds.

3. Floral third — for a room you sit in. Garden Bloom at ₹799 is British rose and night-blooming jasmine. Warmth brings the richer, sweeter facets of both forward, so a closed warm sitting room at five in the afternoon is the hardest place to wear it.

4. Floral, done well, is an entryway product in summer. Four reeds instead of six, in a space people move through rather than settle in. That is a real recommendation, not a consolation.

5. Fresh Brew is a cooler-months bottle. Coorg coffee and Kerala vanilla, 9.5 on our internal scale and the sweetest thing in the range. Wonderful in a mild month. In a shut hot room it is the most likely to feel like too much.

6. Reed count is the lever, whichever you choose. Six reeds is the calibrated setting. Four takes the output down and lengthens the bottle; nine or ten raise it and cost weeks — roughly five weeks instead of eight on a 50ml.

7. Heat also spends the bottle faster. A 50ml quoted at 6–8 weeks lands nearer six in a warm flat, which is an argument for the 130ml at 14–18 weeks rather than for a different scent.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C summer heat and 85% monsoon humidity, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: dry woody wins a hot afternoon, citrus is a good second if you accept that it settles from lemon into eucalyptus, and floral belongs at four reeds in an entryway rather than at six in a closed hall. Warmth does not turn a fragrance up — it moves the balance towards the base. Buy Mountain Breeze ₹849, or the 130ml at ₹1,349 if the room stays warm all day.
SOSA Mountain Breeze dry woody reed diffuser for a hot summer afternoon
The family that keeps its shape when the room is hot
SOSA Mountain Breeze · Himalayan pine, sage & Indian cedar ₹849 / 50ml
Pine and sage over Indian cedar, and the reason it wins this comparison is structural rather than a matter of taste. There is no sweetness in the composition for warmth to bring forward, so the balance you smell in a hot room at five in the afternoon is close to the balance you smelled in the morning. Green and resinous at the top, dry and grounded underneath. 9.4 on SOSA's own internal strength scale at six reeds — our scale, not an industry standard, not a concentration and not a quality ranking. In a hot flat I would run six reeds in a hall and four in a small closed room. The 130ml is ₹1,349 and runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8, which is the sensible size where a room stays warm all day. Refillable glass, six fibre reeds, alcohol-free and phthalate-free on a heat-stable CCT carrier.

Part one — the three families at five in the afternoon

Everything below is judged on one thing and one thing only: what the composition is doing after a room has been warm for several hours. That is a narrow test, and it is deliberately narrow, because it is the test a summer flat actually runs.

1
DRY WOODY · THE STEADIEST SHAPE
Pine, sage and cedar have nothing sweet in them for warmth to push forward
A fragrance changes in a warm room not because it gets louder but because its parts leave at different speeds. The light materials go first; what is left leans on the base. A dry woody base is the most forgiving thing to be left with, because resinous and green materials do not become sweeter or denser as they warm — they become more of what they already were. That is why Mountain Breeze is the bottle I put in a hot hall without thinking about it. There is a smaller second advantage: dry green notes read as cool. That is perception rather than a claim about the room — nothing in a reed diffuser changes temperature or humidity — but it is real enough that people reach for it in May and put it away in December.
The rule: the less sweetness in a composition, the less a warm afternoon changes it. Sweetness is the variable, not the family name.
2
FRESH CITRUS · BRILLIANT EARLY, DIFFERENT LATER
Citrus materials are the lightest in any composition, and a warm room hurries them
SOSA Morning Freshness citrus reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749 · 50mlCitrus is what most people mean by "fresh", and it is the family with the shortest attention span. Lemon and its relatives are among the most volatile materials a perfumer works with; they lead a composition and are always first to leave, in any climate. A warm room makes that happen sooner, so a citrus bottle that is dazzling at nine in the morning is often reading as its supporting notes by late afternoon. That is not a fault. It is also why Morning Freshness is built as it is: Malabar lemon over peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus, so what remains when the lemon has gone is a dry, green, minty spine rather than nothing. Buy it knowing that shape and it is the best citrus decision in a hot flat.
The tell: if the first three days felt brilliant and week two feels quieter, that is the curve, not the climate — the plateau is the product.
3
FLORAL · THE FAMILY WARMTH CHANGES MOST
Rose and jasmine carry rich, sweet facets, and a hot closed room brings them forward
Garden Bloom is British rose over night-blooming jasmine, and it is the composition I get the most divided reports about in summer. The reason is structural. Big florals — jasmine especially — carry heavy, sweet facets alongside the pretty ones, and warmth pushes those forward while the lighter, greener parts of the flower leave first. In a mild room the effect is generous. In a closed room hot since lunch, some people find it a great deal by evening. That is preference and sensitivity, and the fix is intensity rather than a different flower: four reeds instead of six, in a space with movement through it. At four reeds in an entryway it does something no other bottle in the range does as well.

Part two — the same afternoon, scored

Five compositions against one question. The reed count column is where most of the correction actually happens.

One criterion · how each family behaves once the room has been warm for hours
The family, the SOSA bottle, what warmth does to it, where it still works, and how many reeds
Family The SOSA bottle · 50ml What a hot afternoon does to it Where it still works Reeds I would run
Dry woody ★ Mountain Breeze ₹849 · 9.4 Least change of anything in the range — no sweetness to thicken Halls, bedrooms, studies, all day, all summer Six in a hall, four in a small closed room
Fresh citrus Morning Freshness ₹749 · 9.0 Lemon leads early, the eucalyptus-mint spine leads later Kitchens away from the hob, bathrooms, day rooms Six — it is the brightest and rarely too much
Floral Garden Bloom ₹799 · 8.9 The richer, sweeter facets of rose and jasmine come forward Entryways and passages — short dwell time Four, and add the fifth only if it fades
Soft herbal-floral Evening Calm ₹799 · 8.9 Little drama — lavender and chamomile stay quiet in warmth Bedrooms and reading corners, evenings Four in a bedroom, six only in a large room
Warm gourmand Fresh Brew ₹849 · 9.5 The sweetest structure in the range reads densest when hot Cooler months, or a well-ventilated open kitchen Four in summer if you must, six from November
The honest caveat: these are descriptions of how compositions behave, not measurements, and no temperature is attached to any of them — the only test figures that exist here are SOSA's own, 45°C and 85% relative humidity. The numbers beside each bottle are positions on SOSA's internal strength scale at six reeds; they are not concentrations, not an industry standard and not a quality ranking. Preference matters more than any of this: if you love Fresh Brew in June, run four reeds and enjoy it. And the range has real gaps — there is no oud, no musk-led scent, no aquatic, no vetiver and no sandalwood reed diffuser, though a Sandalwood candle and a Smoked Oudh candle exist at ₹449 each.

The winner, the best citrus case, and the pair that covers both
The SOSA principle
Warmth does not turn a fragrance up. It moves the balance towards the base — so the question in summer is not how strong a composition is, but how sweet it is.
Dry and green keep their shape. Sweet and floral read denser. Reed count is how you correct either of them.

Part three — when the family is not the problem

Scent family is a real variable and it is rarely the one that decides whether you are happy with a bottle. Intensity decides it far more often, and intensity is a reed-count question that costs nothing. Six reeds is where every SOSA bottle is calibrated. Four takes the output down noticeably and lengthens the bottle; nine or ten raise it and cost weeks — roughly five instead of eight on a 50ml, four to five at ten reeds. If a floral feels like too much in a warm room, the answer is almost never a different flower. It is two fewer reeds, or a room with more movement through it. And if fragrance feels like too much for you personally, less of it is the honest answer rather than a different bottle.

The second thing that masquerades as a family problem is the shape of the curve. The first three days of any new bottle are the loudest it will ever be — freshly soaked reeds, and the lightest materials in the composition leaving all at once — then a settle over a week or two, then a plateau that holds to the end of the bottle. People who buy a citrus in summer and feel it has "gone" by week two are usually describing the plateau, not the season. Layered on top is your own nose: you stop registering a constant smell in a room you live in, ordinary olfactory adaptation, hardest at home on a fragrance you chose. I will not give it a timescale or promise a technique that resets it. Leave the flat and come back, or ask whoever arrives next what they notice at the door.

The third case is where no family and no bottle is the answer. If what you want is a cooking smell, a drain or a damp cupboard dealt with, choosing between citrus and woody is beside the point. A reed diffuser adds a fragrance that sits alongside whatever is already in your air. It does not remove, neutralise, absorb, mask, purify or filter anything, and SOSA sells no air purifier and no dehumidifier. Find the source, ventilate or extract, then add fragrance, in that order. It is also worth naming the range's gaps rather than steering you at the nearest thing: there is no oud, no musk-led composition, no aquatic and no vetiver reed diffuser here. If oud or sandalwood is what a hot evening calls for in your house, the honest answer is the Sandalwood candle at ₹449, lit for an hour, and not a reed bottle stretched to cover a note it does not contain.

Heat is not a volume knob. It is a hand on the balance, sliding a composition towards whatever its base is made of — which is why the driest bottle in the range is the one that changes least.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part four — the pick, by room and by hour

Six situations in a hot flat, the bottle I would put in each, the reed count, and the limit you should accept before buying.

The summer pick
Your room and your hour, the bottle, the reeds, and the honest limit
Your room and hour What I would put in it Reeds The limit you should accept
Hall you sit in from four onwards ★ Mountain Breeze 130ml ₹1,349 Six Dry and green is a taste. If you want sweet, this is not it
Bright day room, mornings matter most Morning Freshness 50ml ₹749 Six By evening it is the eucalyptus you are smelling, not the lemon
Entryway, people passing through Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 Four Not the bottle for a shut warm sitting room in May
Bedroom, warm until the AC has run a while Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 Four The softest in the range — do not expect it to fill a hall
You want both bright and dry in one flat Fresh & Grounded duo ₹1,548 Six and six They meet on green eucalyptus, so no seam at the doorway
You love coffee and vanilla anyway Fresh Brew 50ml ₹849 Four in summer It will read denser in a hot closed room. Six from November
Honest notes for buyers: a reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room. It does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels — including no claim that any composition cools a room or affects mood, sleep or focus. It adds no moisture; ultrasonic machines deliver fragrance by aerosolising water and therefore do. Descriptions of how a composition behaves in warmth are qualitative, with no rate, temperature or timescale attached; the only test conditions stated are SOSA's own, 45°C and 85% relative humidity. Longevity figures — 6–8 weeks for 50ml, 14–18 weeks for 130ml at six reeds — are typical ranges rather than guarantees, and warm rooms sit at the short end. Reed count is the volume control and bottle size the duration control. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not an industry standard, not concentrations and not a quality ranking. SOSA has no 100ml reed diffuser; the sizes are 50ml and 130ml. There is no oud, musk-led, aquatic, vetiver or sandalwood reed diffuser in the range. Refills are oil only — replacement reeds are not sold separately. Reed oil never goes into a machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep bottles away from open flame, out of direct sunlight, on a tray, and out of reach of children and pets. Made in Pune; free shipping above ₹499, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Fresh and Grounded reed diffuser duo, citrus and woody for a hot flat
If you cannot choose between bright and dry
SOSA Fresh & Grounded duo · Morning Freshness + Mountain Breeze ₹1,548 / 2 × 50ml
This is the summer answer for a flat with two spaces, and it works for a reason worth knowing: two scents sharing a room boundary must sit within one step of each other, and these two meet on green eucalyptus. Citrus in the day room, pine and cedar in the hall or study, and no seam where they meet in a doorway. Pair Morning Freshness with Fresh Brew instead and you get two compositions arguing. Six reeds each in ordinary rooms, four in anything small and closed. Output per bottle is fixed, so two sources in two spaces is the only way to raise the total in a home — a single larger bottle in the middle does not do it. The 2 × 130ml version is ₹2,548, which is the one to buy if you would rather not shop again until the season turns.

A note from Sonal

Ranking scent families is the sort of thing I usually refuse to do, because a family is not a quality and the best fragrance is the one you want in your house. What makes this question answerable is the criterion attached to it. Ask which family is nicest and there is no answer. Ask which one still smells like itself when the room has been warm since lunchtime, and there is.

The reason comes down to sweetness rather than to family names. Warmth does not raise the volume of a composition; it changes the order in which the parts of it leave, and what you are left with in the afternoon is weighted towards the base. A dry, resinous base gives you more of the same thing. A sweet or richly floral one gives you something noticeably denser. That is all this page is.

Two practical notes. Reed count is a real control and most people never use it — four reeds is a different product from six, and it is free. And heat costs weeks: a 50ml in a warm flat sits at the short end of 6–8, which is an argument for the 130ml or for oil into your own glass, not for a different scent. Made in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

Does heat make a fragrance stronger?
Not in the way people mean. Warmth raises the rate at which materials leave the reed surface, so the bottle empties sooner — but a warm flat usually has fans running and doors open, which carries the vapour away. What you reliably notice is a change of balance rather than of volume: the light materials go first, the base leads sooner.
Is citrus the obvious choice for summer?
It is the obvious choice and it is the second-best one on this criterion. Citrus materials are the most volatile in any composition and lead early rather than late, so a citrus bottle is at its most citrus in the morning. Morning Freshness is built to survive that, with a dry peppermint and Nilgiri eucalyptus spine underneath, which is why it is the citrus I would buy for a hot flat.
Why does my jasmine diffuser feel like too much in the afternoon?
Because warmth brings the richer, sweeter facets of a big white floral forward while the lighter green parts leave first, and a closed room keeps the result in place. This is preference and sensitivity, nothing more. Drop to four reeds and move it to a space people pass through rather than sit in.
Can I use Fresh Brew in summer at all?
Yes, if you like it — run four reeds rather than six and put it somewhere with movement, such as an open kitchen away from the hob. It is the sweetest and, on our internal scale at six reeds, the strongest thing in the range, which is exactly why a hot shut room is the hardest place for it. It is a wonderful bottle from November.
Is there a sandalwood or oud reed diffuser for a hot evening?
No, and I would rather say so than point you at the nearest thing. The reed range has no oud, no sandalwood, no vetiver, no musk-led scent and no aquatic. Mountain Breeze is the driest and most grounded composition we make, and if what you want is genuinely sandalwood or smoked oudh, those exist as jar candles at ₹449.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, comparing dry woody, fresh citrus and floral compositions on one criterion — how each behaves in a room that has been warm for several hours. Descriptions are qualitative accounts of composition behaviour; no rate, percentage, temperature or timescale is claimed, and no research is cited. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds, not concentrations or an industry standard. Longevity ranges are typical rather than guaranteed.
