Why a house that is shut most of the time is a different problem

Everything written about home fragrance assumes occupancy. It assumes a room that is lived in, aired by ordinary coming and going, and judged by somebody who has been inside it for hours and can no longer smell it properly. A weekend home inverts all three. The farmhouse question always arrives phrased as a coverage problem — how many machines for four thousand square feet — and it almost never is one. Nobody is standing in the fourth bedroom on a Saturday. What people actually want is for the house to feel cared for when they open the door, and that is a ten-minute problem with a fifteen-minute solution involving windows.

The second thing I say, and I say it more often than I sell anything, is to leave the tanks empty. I have been sent photographs of misting plates that spent a monsoon under standing water, and there is nothing to be done for them. It takes two minutes at lock-up. It is the difference between a machine that lasts years in a weekend house and one that lasts a season.
