How to remove mattress odours naturally

Bedroom fragrance, vol. 14

SOSA Editorial - By Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles - July 2026 - 8 min read

You strip the bed on a humid Pune morning, lift the sheet, and there it is - that low, damp, slept-in smell rising off the mattress itself. No amount of spraying makes it leave. That is because odour is not a fragrance problem, it is a source problem, and the fix is patient and physical before it is ever pretty.

Bedroom hero

SOSA Evening Calm - Himalayan Lavender & Chamomile

The last step, not the first: soft, real lavender to finish a clean, dry bed area. From ₹799

5-second summary

Remove the smell at the source first: sprinkle baking soda over the bare mattress, leave it a few hours, vacuum it off, air the mattress in sun or moving air, wash and fully dry every cover and sheet. Only when the mattress is clean and dry does fragrance belong - set SOSA Evening Calm on the bedside table with 3 reeds for subtle throw, 4 for everyday. A diffuser scents the room, it does not clean a mattress.

Quick answers - read this first

What removes mattress odours naturally? Baking soda drawn over the bare mattress and vacuumed off, plus airing in sun or a breeze and fully washing and drying the covers. That is source removal, and it is the only thing that actually removes the smell.

Will a reed diffuser get rid of a mattress smell? No. A diffuser adds fragrance to the room air; it does not lift the odour trapped in the mattress. Clean and dry first, then scent.

Which SOSA scent finishes the bed area? Evening Calm (Himalayan lavender and chamomile), from ₹799 - the soft, restful note for a bedroom once the mattress is clean and dry.

Straight answer
How do you remove mattress odours naturally?

You remove the source, not the smell of it. Strip the bed, draw a layer of plain baking soda over the bare mattress, leave it to sit and pull moisture and odour for a few hours (longer if you can), then vacuum every trace off. Air the mattress in direct sun or a strong cross-breeze, wash and fully dry the mattress protector, covers and sheets, and let everything dry to the core before it goes back on the bed. Then, and only then, SOSA Evening Calm on the bedside table makes the whole room smell soft and rested. The diffuser is the finishing touch on a clean, dry bed - it is not the clean.

Short version: baking soda, sun, wash, dry - then scent. Source first, fragrance last.

The natural clean-out, step by step

There is no clever spray for this. A mattress holds sweat, dead skin, spilled chai and, in a Pune or Mumbai monsoon, weeks of trapped humidity. Those are physical things sitting in the foam and fabric, so the fix is physical too. Here is the order I use on my own bed, and the order I would tell any friend who messages me about a musty mattress.

First, strip everything and get the mattress fully bare - protector included. Second, sieve a generous, even layer of baking soda across the whole surface; it is mildly odour-absorbing and completely fragrance-free, which is exactly what you want at this stage. Leave it for several hours. Third, vacuum it all off slowly with the upholstery head, working in overlapping passes so none stays behind. Fourth, air the mattress - stand it near an open window, in direct sun on a dry day, or under a fan, because moving air is what carries the last of the smell out. Fifth, wash the covers, sheets and protector and dry them completely; a cover that goes back even slightly damp is a musty mattress in three days. Only after all of that does fragrance have a job.

Step What it does Removes odour? Time
Baking soda + vacuum Absorbs moisture and dulls smell in the surface layer Yes - source removal A few hours, then vacuum
Sun / air / fan Carries trapped humidity and odour out of the foam Yes - source removal Half a day of dry air
Wash + fully dry covers Clears the fabric that holds most of the smell Yes - source removal Wash cycle + full dry
SOSA reed diffuser Scents the room air around a clean, dry bed No - adds fragrance only Ongoing, weeks per bottle

That last row is the honest one. I make reed diffusers for a living and I will still tell you plainly: Evening Calm cannot reach inside your mattress and it was never meant to. What it can do is make a freshly cleaned bedroom feel finished - soft lavender and chamomile in the air so the room reads as rested, not just neutral.

Why the smell keeps coming back

If you have cleaned the mattress and the odour returns within a week, the source is still there somewhere - almost always moisture. Indian bedrooms make this hard: summers run roughly 35 to 45C and monsoon air is heavy with humidity, and a sealed AC room can trap its own damp. A mattress is a sponge for all of it. Below are the usual reasons a smell reappears, and what to actually change.

MoistureDamp never fully left

The most common one. If the mattress or a cover went back before it was bone dry, the smell regrows fast. Give it more sun and air time than feels necessary, and never re-dress a bed that is even slightly cool-damp to the touch.

AirflowThe bed cannot breathe

A mattress flat on a solid platform, in a shut, humid room, has nowhere to release moisture. Open the room daily, use a slatted base if you can, and flip or rotate the mattress every so often so both sides get air.

CoversYou skipped the protector

Most of what your nose reads as a mattress smell is actually in the fabric closest to you - protector and sheets. Wash them on a regular rhythm and dry them fully. This alone fixes a lot of recurring odour.

MaskingYou reached for scent too early

Spraying fragrance over a damp, smelly mattress buries the problem for an afternoon and lets it deepen. Scent is the reward for a clean, dry bed - not a substitute for one.

There is one more thing worth naming, because people worry they have done something wrong: after a day or two you often stop noticing a scent you liked. That is olfactory adaptation - your nose tuning out a constant smell - not the diffuser fading or failing. Rotating scents, say Evening Calm in the bedroom and Morning Freshness elsewhere, keeps your nose awake to both. It is the same reason a house never smells like anything to the people who live in it.

Myth vs reality

Myth: a good reed diffuser will get rid of a bad mattress smell.
Reality: a diffuser scents the air of the room; it cannot remove odour trapped in the mattress. Clean and dry the mattress at the source first - then a diffuser makes the finished room smell lovely.

Our pick

SOSA Evening Calm - Himalayan Lavender & Chamomile

Once the mattress is clean and dry, this is the note I want by a bed. Real lavender and chamomile are soft and low, the kind of quiet scent that helps a bedroom feel like a place to wind down rather than a place you just finished cleaning. Set it on the bedside table: 3 reeds for a subtle, long-lasting throw, 4 for everyday balance, 5 to 6 in a larger master bedroom. Flip the reeds weekly. From ₹799

If your bedroom leans humid or you want something brighter and cleaner in the air while the room finishes drying out, Morning Freshness (Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus) is the crisper alternative from the same range. Both do the same job - they scent a room. Neither cleans a mattress, and I would not want you to buy either thinking it will.

Founder note

From Sonal - a monsoon morning in Pune

The first monsoon after we started SOSA, my own mattress turned on me. I had the diffusers, the whole range within reach, and for a few foolish days I kept adding scent to a room that had a damp problem, not a fragrance one. It never worked, of course. The smell always came back by evening.

So I did the unglamorous thing. Baking soda, a slow vacuum, the mattress stood in the one patch of afternoon sun we get, the protector washed and dried properly this time. By nightfall the bed was actually clean - and that was the moment Evening Calm earned its place on the bedside table, not before it.

I trained at ISIPCA to build scent, and I will still tell you the same thing every time: fragrance is the last step in a clean room, never a shortcut past a dirty one.

Frequently asked questions

Can a reed diffuser remove the smell from my mattress?

No. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to the room air; it does not lift the odour held inside the mattress. You have to remove the source first - baking soda and vacuum, air the mattress, wash and fully dry the covers - and then a diffuser like Evening Calm makes the clean, dry room smell soft and restful.

How does baking soda remove mattress odours?

Sprinkled in an even layer over the bare mattress and left for a few hours, plain baking soda absorbs some surface moisture and dulls odour, and it is completely fragrance-free so it does not just mask the smell. Vacuum every bit of it off afterwards with an upholstery head. It works best paired with airing the mattress and washing the covers.

Why does my mattress smell musty again after I clean it?

Almost always because moisture is still there. If the mattress or a cover went back before it was fully dry - easy to do in Indian humidity, with summers around 35 to 45C and heavy monsoon air - the smell regrows quickly. Give it more sun and air time, improve airflow under the bed, and make sure covers are dried to the core before re-dressing.

Which SOSA scent is best for the bedroom once the mattress is clean?

Evening Calm - Himalayan lavender and chamomile, from ₹799. It is the soft, wind-down note for a bedside table. Use 3 reeds for a subtle throw, 4 for everyday, 5 to 6 in a larger master bedroom, and flip the reeds weekly. If you want something brighter and cleaner, Morning Freshness is the alternative.

My diffuser seems to stop smelling after a couple of days. Did it fade?

Usually not - it is your nose. After steady exposure you stop noticing a constant scent; that is olfactory adaptation, not the product weakening. Rotating scents, for example Evening Calm in the bedroom and Morning Freshness elsewhere, keeps your nose responsive. Flipping the reeds weekly also refreshes the throw.
