A smelly washing machine is almost always biofilm - a build-up of detergent, softener and skin oils inside the drum, door seal and drawer that traps bacteria and passes the smell to your clothes. Removing it is a cleaning job, not a fragrance one, and it is straightforward. Fix the machine first, keep it dry between washes, and only then does a room fragrance keep everything smelling clean.
Quick answers — read this first
How do I remove washing machine odours? Clean the biofilm that causes them: run a hot empty maintenance wash (the hottest cycle, with machine cleaner or a cup of white vinegar), scrub the rubber door seal where black residue hides, remove and wash the detergent drawer, and clean the filter. Then leave the door and drawer open after every wash so the drum dries - a damp, closed machine is what breeds the smell. Once it is clean and dry, keep the laundry room itself fresh with a reed diffuser (from Rs 749). Alcohol-free, made in India.
Why does my washing machine smell even after cleaning? Usually because it is left closed and damp, so biofilm regrows, or the filter and drawer were missed. Leave the door open to air-dry after every use, clean the filter monthly, use less detergent and softener (excess feeds the film), and run a hot maintenance wash regularly. A dry machine simply cannot smell.
Does fragrance fix a smelly washing machine? No - fragrance only masks it briefly and cannot remove biofilm. You must clean the drum, seal, drawer and filter and keep the machine dry. Once the source is gone, a reed or mist diffuser keeps the laundry room smelling fresh, but the cleaning is what removes the odour.
The short answer
Short answer: run a hot maintenance wash, clean the seal, drawer and filter, and leave the door open to dry. Then keep the room fresh with a reed diffuser (from Rs 749).
The pick: a SOSA reed diffuser (from ₹749) for a low-maintenance fresh room, or a mist diffuser with the Hotel Collection (from ₹299) for a stronger throw.
Shop: SOSA reed diffusers and the Hotel Collection scenting range.
A fresh-smelling laundry room is not about masking odour - it is about a clean base (dry air, a clean machine) plus a continuous, gentle fragrance. A reed diffuser or a water-based mist diffuser does the second part quietly, all day.
A smelly washing machine is biofilm - detergent, softener and skin oils built into a film inside the machine that traps bacteria and smells. Remove it, then keep it dry. 1. Run a hot maintenance wash. Empty, on the hottest cycle, with a machine cleaner or a cup of white vinegar - this lifts the film from the drum. 2. Clean the door seal. Black residue hides in the folds of the rubber gasket - wipe it thoroughly, as this is the worst offender. 3. Wash the drawer and filter. Remove the detergent drawer and scrub it, and clean the filter at the base of the machine, where lint and gunk collect. 4. Leave it open to dry. After every wash, leave the door and drawer open so the drum air-dries - a closed, damp machine is exactly what regrows the smell. 5. Use less product. Excess detergent and softener feed the biofilm, so use the right dose, not more. Fix the machine first - fragrance cannot cure it. Then keep the room fresh. Once the machine is clean and dry, a Morning Freshness reed (lemon, mint and eucalyptus, ₹749) keeps the laundry room smelling clean and laundered, with no flame or plug. For more throw, a mist diffuser (₹799) with the Hotel Collection scent (₹299). Alcohol-free, made in India, with a portion of every order supporting girl-child education.
One line: clean the biofilm - hot maintenance wash, seal, drawer and filter - and leave the door open to dry. Then keep the room fresh with a reed from Rs 749.
A great place to start for a fresh laundry room is Morning Freshness - a lemon, mint and eucalyptus reed that smells clean and laundered, at ₹749, no plug and no flame. Want a stronger throw? Add a mist diffuser with the Hotel Collection from ₹299.
A washing machine smell is biofilm, and it hides in specific places. Here is where, and how to clear it.
1
The drum and seal
Where biofilm builds
The smell lives in the drum, the rubber door seal and the detergent drawer - detergent, softener and oils build into a biofilm that traps bacteria. Run a hot empty maintenance wash to lift it from the drum, then wipe deep into the folds of the rubber gasket, where black residue hides and smells worst. This is the single most important step, because the seal is where most washing-machine odour actually comes from.
Tip: clean the drum with a hot wash and scrub the door seal - biofilm there is the main cause.
2
The drawer and filter
The missed spots
Two places people forget: the detergent drawer, which grows mould in its corners, and the filter at the base of the machine, where lint, coins and gunk collect and stagnate. Remove and scrub the drawer, and open and clean the filter - both hold trapped water and residue that smell. Cleaning these alongside the drum and seal is what makes the odour actually go, rather than returning within a wash or two.
3
Keep it dry
So it stays fresh
A clean machine only stays clean if it dries. Leave the door and drawer open after every wash so the drum airs out, use the correct (not excess) dose of detergent and softener, and run a hot maintenance wash every few weeks. A damp, closed machine regrows biofilm quickly, so this habit is what keeps the smell gone. Then a room fragrance keeps the laundry space itself smelling fresh on top of a genuinely clean machine.
Tip: leave the door open to dry and use less product - a dry machine simply cannot smell.
The SOSA principle
A washing machine odour is biofilm, not a fragrance problem - clean the drum, seal, drawer and filter, then keep it dry.
Run a hot maintenance wash, scrub the seal and drawer, clean the filter, and leave the door open to air-dry after every use. Once the machine is genuinely clean and dry, a reed or mist diffuser keeps the laundry room smelling fresh. From Rs 749.
Keeping the room fresh after
Once the machine is clean and dry, here is how to keep the room fresh, by how much throw you want.

Why it suits the mood
Low-maintenance · a reed diffuser
Morning Freshness (lemon, mint, eucalyptus) reads clean and laundered. From Rs 749.
More throw · mist diffuser + Hotel Collection
Stronger scent for a bigger room. From Rs 799 + Rs 299.
Clean the seal, leave the door open, and the smell simply goes - fragrance then keeps a genuinely clean machine's room smelling fresh.

A note on the two systems: SOSA reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil and need no electricity. The Hotel Collection is a separate water-based fragrance made for ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - this is not reed diffuser oil, and the two are not interchangeable. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and is not affiliated with any hotel brand; the Hotel Collection scents are our own interpretations. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal
People think they want a laundry room that smells nice. What they actually want is fresh clothes, fresh towels and fresh sheets - with no damp note, no musty smell, no cheap chemical cover-up. Those are two different things, and the order matters.
First fix the base: a clean machine, dry air, clothes that are dried properly and not left sitting damp. Then, and only then, add a continuous, gentle fragrance so the room and the linen smell beautiful all the time. A reed diffuser does this with no flame and no plug; a water-based mist diffuser with our Hotel Collection does it with a stronger, hotel-grade throw when you want one.
One honest note: fragrance is the finishing touch, not a cure for damp. If clothes smell musty, air and dry them properly first - the scent is there to keep a clean room smelling lovely, not to hide a problem. Made in small batches in India; a part of every order supports girl-child education.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove washing machine odours?
Clean the biofilm that causes them: run a hot empty maintenance wash on the hottest cycle with machine cleaner or white vinegar, scrub the rubber door seal where black residue hides, remove and wash the detergent drawer, and clean the filter. Then leave the door and drawer open after every wash so the drum dries. Once it is clean and dry, keep the laundry room fresh with a reed diffuser from Rs 749.
A dry machine simply cannot smell, so the drying habit matters as much as the cleaning.
Fragrance is the finishing touch on a clean machine, never a substitute for cleaning it.
How often should I clean my washing machine?
Run a hot maintenance wash every two to four weeks, wipe the door seal weekly, and clean the drawer and filter monthly. If you wash often or use a lot of softener, clean more frequently, since build-up is faster. Regular light cleaning plus leaving the door open to dry keeps biofilm from forming in the first place, which is far easier than removing an established smell.
Can I use vinegar to clean my washing machine?
Yes - a cup of white vinegar in the drum on the hottest empty cycle helps dissolve detergent and softener build-up and deodorise the drum. You can add bicarbonate of soda in the drawer for extra cleaning. Wipe the seal and drawer afterwards and leave the door open to dry. For heavier build-up a dedicated machine cleaner is stronger, but vinegar is a good regular maintenance option.

Facts verified July 2026: A musty or damp smell in laundry or a laundry room is usually caused by moisture - clothes left damp, poor ventilation, or a washing machine that needs cleaning - and is best solved by drying and airing properly and cleaning the machine, before any fragrance is added. SOSA reed diffusers are alcohol-free fragrance oil with natural reeds (no flame, no electricity, no water), in 50ml and 130ml with refills, lasting roughly 6-10 weeks; from ₹749. SOSA ultrasonic (mist) diffusers - Boond (300ml, ₹799), Sukoon (500ml, ₹1,799) and Megh (6L, ₹3,499) - use a water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299, sold separately); this is not reed diffuser oil. SOSA Vaayu is a waterless cold-air machine with Bluetooth app and timer, around 1000m³ coverage, ₹11,999. SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Cruelty-free, vegan, made in India. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live collection pages.
