Some academic relationships do not end when the viva does. The person who supervised you keeps writing references, keeps recommending you, keeps taking your calls about a job you are not sure about. At some point that stopped being supervision and became something else, and the gift should notice.
Quick answers — read this first
What do you give an academic mentor who supported your career? Something that reflects where the relationship actually is now, which is usually somewhere between former supervisor and colleague. That widens the options: a worn fragrance becomes reasonable in a way it was not when they were assessing your thesis, and a warmer room gift is unremarkable. An attar at ₹379 to ₹399 for 3ml, or a 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 where you know the taste well. A reed duo at ₹1,548 if you would rather give the room. The letter still does the heavy lifting.
Does the professional-distance rule still apply after the degree? It loosens, but it does not vanish. If your mentor is still inside an institution that might assess your applications, sit on your panels or supervise you in any capacity, keep the gift modest and check that institution's rules. If the relationship is now genuinely peer to peer — you are both academics, they no longer hold anything over your work — then it is an ordinary gift between colleagues, and the constraint is only your own judgement about what would sit well with the person you know.
Is a personal fragrance appropriate for a long-standing mentor? It can be, and this is one of the few relationships in this cluster where it genuinely is. A worn fragrance assumes you know somebody's taste; after five or ten years, often you do. Where you are sure, an attar is a good gift — small, unshowy, and made properly. Where you are not sure, the trio at ₹1,055 lets them pick, or a reed keeps it in the room. Fragrance sensitivity is real, so if you have never seen them wear anything, take the room instead.
The short answer
Short answer: The relationship has changed and the gift can change with it. A mentor who supported your career after the degree is closer to a colleague than a supervisor, which makes a worn fragrance reasonable where it would not have been before, and makes a warmer room gift unremarkable. Keep checking the institutional rules if either of you is still inside one.
The pick:SOSA Nawaab at ₹399 for 3ml or ₹1,199 for 12ml — white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron, the deepest of the four.
How does a gift change once your mentor is no longer supervising you?
Ask one honest question before anything else: is this still a relationship with a power difference in it? Sometimes the answer is clearly no. The degree was conferred years ago, you work somewhere else, and what continues is a friendship with an academic shape — they read your drafts because they want to, not because it is their job. Sometimes the answer is quietly yes: you are in the same department, they sit on panels you apply to, they are asked about you by people who make decisions. Those two situations look identical from outside and need different gifts. Where it is genuinely peer to peer, the constraint that governs the rest of this family loosens. A worn fragrance stops being presumptuous, because after five or ten years you very likely do know what somebody wears and what they would not. An attar is a good gift at this point: a 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 is small and unshowy, a 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 is the version for a relationship that carries it. Nawaab — white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron over amber and leather — is the deepest of the four and the one I would send to somebody whose taste runs serious. If you are not sure of the taste, the trio at ₹1,055 hands the choosing back, and a reed keeps the whole question in the room. Where the answer is quietly yes, behave as though they are still your supervisor. Keep it modest, keep it clearly a thank-you, and check what the institution allows — many publish rules on gifts to staff and some set a value limit, and those apply to former students as much as current ones. What does not change is the letter. A mentor who supported a career has a specific list attached to them: the reference written at short notice, the introduction made without being asked, the honest discouragement that saved you two years. Write those down. That is the part of the gift nobody else could produce, and it is the part that does not have to be sized against anybody's policy. If you want help judging where the relationship actually sits, ask us to help choose a gift.
Be honest about whether the power difference has really gone. If it has, a worn gift is reasonable. If it has not, behave as though they still supervise you.
For a mentor whose taste runs serious, SOSA Nawaab — white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf on amber and leather. 3ml ₹399, 12ml ₹1,199, six to eight hours on skin.
Sizing, honestly. A 3ml attar is about a month of regular wear and is the right first gift; a 12ml is a year and reads as a considered choice rather than a token. On reeds, 50ml suits a desk or a shelf and 130ml suits a whole room. If you have never seen this person wear fragrance at all, take the room and skip the guess.
White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf on amber, leather and white musk. The deepest of the four. 3ml ₹399, 6ml ₹699, 12ml ₹1,199.
Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze — lemon and mint alongside pine, sage and cedar. Two dry registers, two 50ml bottles at ₹1,548. Suits an office and a study at once.
Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani in one box, three 3ml bottles at ₹1,055. Festive rose, royal oud and night jasmine — the recipient picks, which removes the only real risk in a worn gift.
White royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron and aged tobacco leaf on amber, leather and white musk. The deepest of the four. 3ml ₹399, 6ml ₹699, 12ml ₹1,199. Alcohol-free and DPG-free; six to eight hours on skin.
Three questions, and the first one decides the other two.
1
Has the asymmetry gone?
Be honest, because it is easy to tell yourself it has
The comfortable answer is that you are colleagues now. Sometimes that is true. Often there is still a residue: they are senior in a field you are junior in, they are consulted about you, their opinion moves things you want. That is not a reason to give nothing, but it is a reason to keep the gift in the modest band and unmistakably a thank-you. The test I would use is practical rather than emotional. If this person were asked tomorrow to assess an application of yours, would the gift you are considering be something either of you would rather they had not received? If yes, scale it down. If the question is genuinely absurd, the relationship has moved and you can give accordingly.
Tip: If you are both in the same institution, the institution's gift rules almost certainly still apply to you. Check them.
2
Do you know what they wear?
This is the relationship where you often do
A worn fragrance assumes knowledge of somebody's taste, which is why it is the wrong gift from a student of one term and a perfectly good one from a person who has known somebody for a decade. If you can picture what they wear, or you have talked about it, an attar is a considered gift: small, made by hand, alcohol-free and DPG-free oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, dab-applied, six to eight hours on skin. If you have never once noticed them wearing anything, that is information too — some people simply do not, fragrance sensitivity is real, and the room is the better answer. The trio sits between the two, because the recipient chooses which of the three suits them.
Three attars in one box, so nothing has to be guessed.
Career support is specific and the note should be too
The thing that distinguishes a career mentor from a supervisor is that the help was mostly optional. Nobody required them to write the reference at two days' notice, to make the introduction, to tell you plainly that a job you wanted was the wrong job. That optional quality is what makes the relationship worth marking, and it gives you exact material for the letter. List three occasions. Say what happened afterwards, because a mentor rarely finds out how the introduction turned out. That is the part of this gesture with no equivalent on any shelf, and it is the reason I keep saying the object is what the note arrives in rather than the other way round.
The SOSA principle
A career mentor usually never hears how it turned out. Telling them what the introduction led to, three years later, is worth more than anything that comes in a box.
That is a remark about what people find interesting to hear, and not a claim that any gift or letter changes a professional relationship.
Where you know the taste and it runs serious: Nawaab — white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron on amber and leather. 3ml ₹399, 12ml ₹1,199.
Register by what you actually know, which in this relationship is usually more than you think.
The SOSA plan
Choosing for a career mentor
What you know
What to choose
You know exactly what they wear
An attar. A 3ml at ₹379 to ₹399 as a first gift, a 12ml at ₹1,149 to ₹1,199 for a long relationship.
You know they enjoy fragrance but not what kind
The trio at ₹1,055. Three registers in one box, and the choosing goes back to them.
You have never seen them wear anything
A reed. Dry registers for an office, warmer ones for a study, and no assumption about the person at all.
You still share an institution
Stay modest whatever else is true, and check the written rules on gifts to staff before you buy.
If you would rather keep the whole thing in the room, the fragrance page for academic mentors works through the choice, and the wider appropriateness test is in this family's pillar guide. SOSA is an independent Indian brand, unaffiliated with any perfume house, designer or university, and no institution is a SOSA customer.
If you would rather stay out of personal territory: Fresh & Grounded — Morning Freshness with Mountain Breeze, two dry registers in one box at ₹1,548. It suits an office and a study at once.
The relationship moved, and most people's gifts never notice. A mentor of ten years is not being thanked by a student any more, and the gift can say so.

Room options
Still the easier answer, whenever the taste is a guess
Choose by what you actually know about the person, and keep the institutional question in mind if you are both still inside one. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Two caveats. If you and your mentor are still inside the same institution, its rules on gifts to staff almost certainly still apply to you, and a gift that has to be declared is not the thank-you you intended — check first. And a worn fragrance is only reasonable where you genuinely know the taste; fragrance sensitivity is real, and where you are unsure the room is the better answer. We make no promise about delivery timing, wrapping or personalisation.

A note from Sonal
The letters I like most are the ones that arrive years after the degree. Somebody wants to thank a person who has quietly kept helping them — a reference at short notice, an introduction, a warning about a job — and the striking thing is that they usually have not said thank you properly at any point, because there was never a ceremony to attach it to. That is the real reason this gift is hard. There is no fixed moment for it.
Since there is no fixed moment, I would make one. Pick a reason — a paper accepted, a post taken, a move to another city — and send the thing with a letter that explains what came of their help. Mentors rarely hear the ending. You are the only person who can tell them, and no object I sell competes with that sentence for value.
Scenting a room is an ambience decision; SOSA makes no outcome, therapeutic or medical claim for it, no product here masks an odour, and nothing of ours is hypoallergenic. Alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts about the attars, not skin or allergy claims — patch-test, and where somebody may be sensitive, give the room. In a shared workplace the owner's judgement about fragrance comes first. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
What should I give an academic mentor who helped my career?
Something that matches where the relationship stands now. If it is genuinely peer to peer, a worn fragrance is reasonable: an attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399 for 3ml, or Rs 1,149 to Rs 1,199 for 12ml where you know the taste. If there is still any power difference, stay modest and give the room instead. Either way, write what their help actually led to.
Does professional distance still apply after the degree?
It loosens rather than disappearing. If your mentor still sits on panels you apply to, is consulted about you, or works in your institution, behave as though they still supervise you and check the written rules on gifts to staff. If the relationship is genuinely between colleagues now, it is an ordinary gift and your own judgement about the person is the only constraint.
Is an attar a good gift for a mentor?
In a long relationship where you know the taste, yes. An attar is small, hand-blended, alcohol-free and DPG-free oil on a sandalwood and jojoba carrier, dab-applied, six to eight hours on skin. A 3ml is a first gift and a 12ml is for a relationship of many years. If you have never seen them wear fragrance, choose a reed instead.
There is no occasion. When do I give it?
Make one. A paper accepted, a post taken, a move to another city, or simply the anniversary of something. Career mentorship has no ceremony attached to it, which is why most people never thank anyone properly for it. Pick a reason, send the thing, and use the letter to tell them how their help turned out.
How much should I spend on a long-standing mentor?
Between roughly Rs 379 and Rs 1,859, depending on how long it has run and how close it is. A 3ml attar is a token in the best sense; the trio at Rs 1,055 or a reed duo at Rs 1,548 suits a decade. Going much higher makes it a tribute rather than a thank-you, and in a shared institution it may also breach a written limit.
The middle path: The Attar Trio at ₹1,055 — three 3ml bottles, and the recipient decides which of them is theirs.
