A multi-floor showroom is not one space with more of it. Air moves vertically by convection rather than mixing evenly, which means an upper floor accumulates what rises and a lower floor runs thin - and the stairwell between them is a transitional gap most stores never think about.
Quick answers — read this first
How should a multi-floor jewellery showroom be scented? Treat each floor as its own air space with its own correctly sized provision, rather than assuming an open staircase distributes from one system. Air moves between floors by convection, which accumulates at the top and thins at the bottom rather than mixing evenly.
Does an open staircase distribute fragrance between floors? Not evenly. Convection carries warm air upward, so an upper floor tends to accumulate while the lower floor runs thinner than intended - the opposite of even distribution. Both floors end up away from the level that was set, and neither matches the specification.
What is the most missed space in a multi-floor showroom? The stairwell or lift lobby. It is an enclosed transitional space that customers pass through between floors, it usually has poor circulation, and it reads as a gap in an otherwise composed store - which is noticeable precisely because it sits between two considered spaces.
The short answer
Short answer: treat each floor as its own air space with its own provision - convection carries warm air upward, so upper floors accumulate and lower floors thin rather than mixing evenly. The stairwell or lift lobby is a separate transitional space and the most commonly missed one. Vaayu Rs 11,999 per floor, Sukoon Rs 1,799 per room; WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) for showrooms to ~1000m³; small-store systems from ₹1,799; HVAC from ₹25,999.

A jewellery purchase is one of the most emotional transactions in Indian retail - trust, celebration and aspiration in one visit. Scent marketing gives that visit a signature: one refined fragrance, held evenly across the showroom, running on a schedule no staff member has to remember. Customers experience it as "this store feels premium" - the exact feeling that precedes a high-value purchase.
How do we handle a showroom across two or three floors?
Four rules, and the first corrects the usual assumption. 1. Every floor is its own air space. The intuition that an open staircase connects the floors into one volume is understandable and it does not hold. Air moves vertically by convection - warm air rises, cool air falls - which is a directional transport rather than an even mixing, so an upper floor accumulates what comes up while the lower floor runs thinner than intended. Both end up away from the level that was set. Provide each floor separately, sized to its own volume: a Vaayu (₹11,999) per floor for standard volumes, or an Aangan (₹25,999) where a floor is large and ducting exists. 2. Expect the upper floor to need less. Because it is receiving convected air from below in addition to its own delivery, an upper floor commonly runs warmer and holds more, and setting it at the same level as the ground floor produces a heavier result. Set each floor independently by walking it, and expect the numbers to differ. 3. The stairwell is its own space. An enclosed stair or lift lobby is a transitional volume with poor circulation, and it is the most commonly missed space in multi-floor showrooms - which is noticeable precisely because it sits between two composed floors and reads as a gap. A Boond (₹799) usually handles it; a lift car is a different question and generally best left alone, since a small sealed box with several people in it is the last place additional fragrance helps. 4. Walk the journey, not the floors. Customers experience a multi-floor showroom as a sequence - arrive, ground floor, stairs, first floor, a consultation room, back down, billing - and the judgement is formed across that whole path. Walk it as a customer would, with the nose reset, and fix wherever it changes. Rooms on each floor take their own Sukoon (₹1,799). Send floor plans with ceiling heights on WhatsApp +91 96192 18531. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: each floor is its own air space, convection accumulates upward rather than mixing, the stairwell is a separate transitional space, and the customer experiences the whole journey rather than individual floors. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.

The vertical problem
The three things vertical space does that a single floor does not.
Why this works
Each floor is its own space, and convection is not mixing
The showroom standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Small-store systems from ₹1,799.
The assumption that an open staircase distributes atmosphere between floors treats vertical air movement as though it were the same as horizontal circulation, and it is not. On a single floor, air is moved around by ventilation, occupancy and the general turbulence of a room, and the result over time approximates mixing. Between floors, the dominant mechanism is convection, which is directional: warm air rises through the opening and cooler air descends, producing a circulation that transports rather than blends. The practical outcome is that the upper floor receives a supply it did not ask for, tends to be warmer to begin with, and accumulates - while the lower floor loses part of what was delivered into it and reads thinner than the setting implies. A store that installs one system on the ground floor and expects the first floor to benefit typically ends up with a lower floor that is under-served and an upper floor that is oddly heavy at the top of the stairs and thin at its far end, which is a confusing pattern to diagnose without knowing the mechanism.
Tip: warm air rises through the opening and cool air falls - that is transport, not mixing.
2
The stairwell gap
A transitional space between two considered ones
Enclosed stairwells and lift lobbies are among the least considered spaces in any multi-floor retail building, and in a showroom they carry more weight than their size suggests because of where they sit in the customer's sequence. A customer moves from a composed ground floor into a stairwell and then into a composed first floor, and if the stairwell is stale, warm and unscented it registers as a gap - noticeable precisely because it is bracketed by two spaces that were clearly thought about. Stairwells also tend to be genuinely poor environments: enclosed, often with no ventilation provision of their own, sometimes doubling as a route to back-of-house, and frequently warmer than the floors they connect because they are collecting convected air. The remedy is small - a Rs 799 unit and, where possible, attention to whether the stairwell can be ventilated at all - and the diagnostic is the customer walk. A lift car is a different case and the answer there is usually to leave it alone: a small sealed box occupied by several people for a short period is the one place where additional fragrance is more likely to be unpleasant than helpful.
3
The journey
Customers experience the sequence, not the floors
Specification for a multi-floor showroom tends to proceed floor by floor, which is correct for sizing and incomplete for experience. Customers do not experience floors; they experience a path - arriving, crossing the ground floor, climbing, entering the upper floor, being seated in a room, returning, and completing at billing - and their impression is formed by the continuity of that sequence rather than by any individual space. Two failures show up only when the path is walked rather than the floors inspected. The first is a level mismatch between floors: if each was set independently by different people at different times, the transition registers as a change, which is the one thing the zoning principle exists to prevent. The second is the transitional spaces themselves - the stairwell, the lift lobby, the landing outside a first-floor consultation room - which are invisible on a floor plan and obvious on a walk. The practical instruction is to conduct the monthly walk-through as a complete customer journey across all floors in one pass, with the nose reset before starting, rather than as separate per-floor checks. The gaps appear in the joins.
Tip: specify floor by floor, but verify by walking the whole journey - the gaps are always in the joins.
The SOSA principle
A multi-floor showroom is several air spaces connected by convection rather than one large one - so each floor needs its own provision, and the upper floor usually needs less.
The stairwell between them is the most commonly missed space, and it sits between two floors customers have just noticed were considered.

Honest notes for jewellery retailers: scent marketing's effects on dwell time, perceived quality and recall are real but moderate - fragrance compounds a well-run store and rescues nothing; premises must be clean, cool and well ventilated first, because scent crowns good air and never substitutes for it. No fragrance harms jewellery: quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not tarnish gold, diamonds or gemstones (silver tarnish is driven by sulphur and humidity, not diffuser oils - keep any machine's mist away from direct contact with open displays as basic practice). The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own interpretations inspired by the world's finest hotels; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel or jewellery brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA Versailles
A note from Sonal
Jewellery retailers understand atmosphere better than almost any other business - you light every display like a stage, you serve chai in good cups, you train your team to make a bride feel like the only customer in the store. And then, in most stores, the air itself is left to chance: the street, the incense stick, the phenyl from the morning mopping. The most emotional purchase your customer will make this year deserves better air than that.
I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian jewellery stores is the same architecture the global luxury houses use: one signature, sized to the showroom, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. The machines matter (throw, coverage, scheduling), but the strategy matters more, and it is in every guide we publish. If you want it applied to your specific store, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 - I read the store descriptions myself.
Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.
Frequently asked questions
We have a mezzanine that overlooks the main floor. Is that a separate space?
Usually yes for provision purposes, even though it is visually open. A mezzanine sits above the main floor and receives convected air, which means it tends to run warmer and to accumulate, while contributing little back down - so a system sized for the floor below will over-serve the mezzanine and under-serve the floor. Treat it as its own zone with its own light provision, set independently by walking it, and expect its level to be lower than the floor's. Two other mezzanine characteristics matter: they are frequently used for consultation seating, which makes comfort there disproportionately important, and they are often the warmest part of a showroom, which makes ventilation the first thing to check rather than fragrance. If the mezzanine is small and genuinely open along its full length, verify by walking rather than assuming - some behave as part of the floor and some do not.
Should the upper floor use the same register as the ground floor?
Always. The register is the constant across the whole building and only the intensity varies, which is the same principle that governs zoning within a single floor. This matters more in a multi-floor showroom than anywhere else, because the customer's movement between floors is frequent and deliberate - up to see bridal, down to complete at billing - and a change of character on a staircase is the most detectable version of the inconsistency this cluster warns about. If different floors serve genuinely different segments, such as a silver or gifting floor beneath a bridal floor, differentiate with everything visible - display language, lighting, layout, hosting - and keep the air continuous. One house, several rooms.
Our upper floor is much warmer than the ground floor. Does that affect scenting?
Substantially, and the temperature is worth addressing before the fragrance. Warmer air holds and moves fragrance differently, so the same setting reads stronger on a hot upper floor than on a cooler ground floor - which is one reason upper floors commonly need a lower setting rather than an equal one. More importantly, a hot upper floor is uncomfortable regardless of what is in the air, and if that is where consultation seating sits, the discomfort is acting during the hours when decisions are made. Practical checks: whether the air conditioning provision genuinely matches the upper floor's load rather than being scaled from the ground floor, whether heat is entering through a roof or a west-facing glazing, and whether the stairwell is delivering warm air continuously. Fix what can be fixed thermally, then set the fragrance level from a seat on that floor.
Do we need a unit in the lift?
No, and it is one of the few places where the answer is a clear no. A lift car is a very small sealed volume occupied by several people for a short period, frequently in close proximity, and it is exactly the environment where any additional fragrance is more likely to be experienced as oppressive than as pleasant. Some customers are sensitive, some have just come in from heat, and nobody can leave for the duration. What lift cars usually need is ventilation and cleanliness rather than scent - a lift that smells stale is a maintenance issue with the extraction or the cleaning routine, and should be handled there. The lift lobby on each floor is a different matter: that is a real transitional space, often enclosed, and it can carry a small unit at a low level in the usual register.
How should the monthly walk-through work across three floors?
As one continuous journey rather than three separate checks, and starting from outside. Step out for ten minutes to reset, then walk the exact customer path: in through the entrance, across the ground floor to its far corner, up the stairs, across the first floor, into a consultation room, back out, down, to the billing counter, and out. Note anywhere the atmosphere feels strong, absent or different - and pay particular attention to the joins, since transitions between floors are where mismatches show. Do it once at a quiet hour and once at peak if you can, because convection and occupancy both change the picture. In a three-floor building this takes about twenty minutes including the reset, and it is the only check that reliably surfaces the stairwell and landing gaps that floor-by-floor inspection misses. Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with longer dwell time, improved store and service evaluations, and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives unclean or poorly ventilated premises. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind luxury signature scents. Quality diffuser fragrance at ambient levels does not damage gold, diamonds or gemstones; silver tarnish is driven by sulphur compounds and humidity. SOSA systems: Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (Rs 1,799) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (Rs 3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from Rs 299; refills 100ml Rs 999); SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (Rs 25,999) and SOSA Meenar (Rs 38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
