What should it be? Something that weighs almost nothing - a 12ml alcohol-free attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399, or a solid perfume at Rs 459 to Rs 549 in a flat compact.
Is a large or sentimental gift a bad idea? At that moment, yes. It becomes a packing decision, and she will feel bad about whatever she has to leave behind.
The last week is the worst possible week to receive anything
Farewell gifts fail more often than most, and the reason is almost always timing rather than choice. Picture the last five days before somebody leaves the country. There are two suitcases open on the floor and a weight limit that has already been exceeded twice. She is deciding which books to abandon, which clothes to give away, and whether a pair of shoes is worth two kilograms. Relatives are visiting. Somebody is cooking. Everybody who cares about her is arriving with something, and every one of those somethings has to be weighed, considered, packed or left. A gift given in that window is not received the way it was intended. If it is bulky, she has to make a decision about it in front of you. If it is beautiful and heavy, she has to leave it behind and feel bad about it. If it is fragile, it is a worry for a twenty-hour journey. The gift is fine; the week is wrong. Two better windows exist and both are easy. The first is about two weeks out, before the packing has become critical, when she still has slack in her luggage and enough attention to actually look at what she has been given. The second is three or four weeks after she lands, which is in many ways the better one: everybody else gave something at departure, nothing has arrived since, and the first wave of novelty has worn off while the place is still not home. A small parcel then is the only one in the room, and it is also the moment when a person is most likely to be missing ordinary things from home. Now the object, and the constraint is weight and robustness. An alcohol-free attar at three hundred and seventy-nine to three hundred and ninety-nine rupees is the strongest answer, because it is twelve millilitres in a glass roll-on - lighter than a pen, smaller than a lipstick, with a roller rather than a pump so there is no atomiser to break and nothing that leaks under cabin pressure. It also happens to be in registers that are harder and more expensive to find in most countries she is likely to be moving to. Ameeri at three hundred and eighty-five rupees is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood. Mastani at three hundred and eighty-nine is night jasmine and Damask rose. Nawaab at three hundred and ninety-nine is a white oud composition built with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate. Adaa at three hundred and seventy-nine is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk. If you want the gift to carry something of home without any of the usual sentimental machinery, the sandalwood and jasmine registers do that on their own. The Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five rupees is three of them, thirty-six millilitres in total, still lighter than a paperback, and it gives her a year of rotation rather than a single decision. A solid perfume at four hundred and fifty-nine to five hundred and forty-nine rupees is the other good answer: fifteen grams of alcohol-free balm in a flat compact, spill-proof, no cap to lose, applied with a finger, six to eight hours of wear, and built to survive exactly the journey she is about to take. Velour at four hundred and seventy-nine is vanilla bean, butter biscuit, toasted almond and whipped cream. Sterling at four hundred and sixty-nine is coconut milk, almond nougat, white amber and powdered musk. On the flight itself, one honest note: cabin-liquid allowances are set by the airline and the departure airport, they differ and they change, so the current limits for her journey are hers to check rather than something any page should assert. Customs and import rules at her destination vary too, and are worth a look rather than an assumption. What not to give at a farewell, plainly. Anything heavy, which is most home fragrance - candles in particular are lovely, available almost everywhere abroad, breakable and heavy, which is three strikes for a suitcase. Anything electrical, because plug types and voltages differ. Anything that depends on a consumable sold only here, because reordering from another country is slow and expensive. And anything that requires her to feel something in front of a room full of people - a farewell is already emotionally crowded, and a gift that demands a reaction adds to the load rather than lightening it. Hand it over quietly, a fortnight early, with two sentences. One last thought worth having. The most useful thing you can give somebody leaving is not an object at all, and if you want the object to carry it, the small format helps: something she uses every single day for a year does more than something she looks at occasionally. Twelve millilitres, used every morning, is present in her life far more often than anything that sits on a shelf.
Two weeks early, or three weeks late
Small enough to survive the packing, and used every day for a year.

| Gift | What it suits | Why it works for a sister | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaa attar | She already has a signature · ₹379 | Bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk - a format she almost certainly does not own, rather than a fifty-first bottle of something she does | ₹379 |
| Cozy Corner candle | The safest · no taste risk | Spiced pear and golden honey, coconut soy, 15 to 18 hours - a decision about a room rather than about her, which forgives far more | ₹379 |
| Velour solid perfume | Travelling, moving, commuting | 15g, alcohol-free, flat and spill-proof - the one format that survives a handbag, a hostel shelf or a suitcase with a weight limit | ₹479 |
| Jasmine hanging car perfume | Her car · not to mask anything | For a car she is proud of - and never bought to cover a new-car smell, which most owners like and which fades on its own | ₹449 |
| Attar Trio | You genuinely do not know | Three attars presented together, so she picks the one that becomes hers - the reliable way to give something worn without guessing | ₹1,055 |
| Morning Freshness reed diffuser | Her home · her own flat | No flame, no socket, no switch - two to three months unattended, and the tightest fit if she has just moved somewhere new | ₹749 |

The thing I notice most about people buying for a sister is how much they already know and how little of it they use. You know what she picks up in a shop and puts down again. You know what she has worn since she was nineteen, whether she is fussy about it, which corner of the house she actually sits in. Nobody else choosing a gift for her has any of that - and yet an enormous number of sibling gifts end up being the same safe object everybody else brought.
The second thing is that a sister is probably the most over-gifted person in your life, and from a fairly narrow list: hampers, chocolates, cosmetics sets, something for the house. None of it is bad and all of it is what would have arrived anyway, which is why it carries almost no information. Something modest from outside that list, with two sentences about why you chose it, does more than something expensive inside it. And when she says she does not want anything, she is usually telling the truth - somebody who buys what she wants does not need supply. She needs to be seen.
Two honest things. If she is a serious perfume person, please do not buy her another regular bottle - give her a format she does not own, an attar or a solid perfume or something for the room, because that is the only kind of fragrance gift a collector cannot already have. And if she has a new home, size the gift to the home: our Vaayu is a waterless nebuliser built for roughly a thousand cubic metres, which is a showroom rather than a 3BHK, and we would rather tell you that than sell you one.
