Most of the discomfort around parent gifts comes from timing rather than from objects, and almost all of it disappears in the last week of term. By then the year has been decided. What is left is a thank-you, and a thank-you is a much simpler thing to give.
Quick answers — read this first
Why is the end of the year the best time to give a teacher a gift? Because nothing is pending. Marks are in, reports are written, and the year the teacher spent with your child is finished rather than in progress. A gift given at that point cannot be read as an attempt to influence anything, because there is nothing left to influence — which is precisely what makes it easier for the teacher to accept. The same object handed over in the week before an assessment carries a question that neither of you can answer. If you are going to give once a year, this is the moment to do it.
What is a good end-of-year gift for a class teacher? Something modest for their room, with a real note. A 50ml reed diffuser between ₹749 and ₹849 is the right size for a single family: Mountain Breeze is dry and unsweet and suits a classroom or staffroom shelf, and Morning Freshness is the cleanest and most ungendered thing in the range. A 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399 works where you have known the teacher for years. Check your school's policy first. Then write a card that names one specific thing the teacher did for your child.
Should the gift come from the parent or from the child? From both, and say so on the card. Let your child choose between two options you have already narrowed down, and have them write a line in their own handwriting — a misspelt sentence from a seven-year-old is worth more on that card than a paragraph you composed for them. Practically the parent is paying and the parent is deciding the size, which is as it should be, because judging what is appropriate is not a child's job. But the gift reads better when the child's hand is visibly on it.
The short answer
Short answer: End-of-year is the cleanest timing for a parent gift because nothing is still being decided: marks are in, reports are done, and a gift at that point can only mean thanks. Keep it modest — roughly ₹379 to ₹849 from one family — check the school's policy, give to the room rather than the person, and let your child write the card.
The pick:SOSA Mountain Breeze at ₹849 for 50ml — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry, unshowy and easy to put down in a classroom that several adults share.
Next step: Tell us the year group, the occasion and what your school allows, and we will suggest something that fits. Ask SOSA to help choose a gift.
What makes an end-of-year gift easier to give than a mid-term one?
Nothing is pending. That is the whole answer, and it is worth sitting with because it explains every other piece of advice on this page. During the year a teacher is making decisions about your child continuously — marks, grouping, what gets reported to you and how, how a difficult week is handled. A gift that arrives while any of that is live carries a question with it, even a small gift, even from a parent who has never once asked for anything. By the last week of term the year is finished. The marks are in, the reports have gone out, and the teacher may well not be teaching your child again. A gift handed over at that point has nothing left to influence, and that is exactly what makes it easy for the teacher to take. The timing does not relax the size rule, though. Modest is still modest: for a single family, roughly ₹379 to ₹399 for a 3ml attar, or ₹749 to ₹849 for a 50ml reed diffuser, and I would stop there. A larger gift at the end of the year is not improper so much as unnecessary — the clean timing has already done the work that generosity was trying to do. Check the school's rules anyway. Plenty of schools cap the value of parent gifts or ask staff to decline them in favour of a class fund, and that policy applies in June as much as in November. Choose for the room, and for the room it will actually end up in. A teacher clearing a classroom in the last week is carrying a lot; a passive reed that needs no power and no switching on goes into a bag without becoming a task. Dry, unsweet registers travel best — Mountain Breeze at ₹849 with its pine, sage and cedar, or Morning Freshness at ₹749. Then write the card properly. Name one specific thing: the week your child was struggling with fractions, the part they took in the play, the afternoon somebody was kind about something small. Specific beats warm every time, and teachers keep the specific ones. If you want help narrowing it down, ask us to help choose a gift.
Give in the last week of term, keep it modest anyway, check the policy, pick something passive for the room, and name one specific thing on the card.
For a classroom or a shared staffroom shelf, SOSA Mountain Breeze at ₹849 — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry and unsweet, so it never reads as decorated, and passive, so there is nothing to plug in or remember.
Sizing, honestly: the 50ml bottle is the one to buy for a classroom or a staffroom, and it is also the more modest gesture, which matters in a parent gift. The 130ml belongs in a home and is a noticeably bigger object to hand over at a school gate. If you have no idea where it will live, the 50ml is the safer purchase on both counts.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry and unsweet — the register that suits a working room, a cabin or a staffroom, and the one least likely to be felt as loud by anyone sharing the space. 50ml ₹849, 130ml ₹1,349.
Himalayan pine, sage and cedar reed diffuser in 50ml (₹849) and 130ml (₹1,349). Dry and unsweet - the register that suits a working room, a cabin or a staffroom.
Three things the end of the year changes, and one it does not.

What the timing fixes
A gift with nothing left to influence reads as thanks and nothing else
The reason a parent gift can feel awkward is that it arrives into a live relationship where somebody is making decisions about your child. Remove the live part and the awkwardness goes with it. At the end of the year the marks are in, the reports have gone, and often the teacher is handing your child on to somebody else entirely. There is no decision left for a gift to sit next to. This is why I would always rather a parent waited until June than gave something careful in January: the same object, in the same wrapping, means two different things in those two months, and only one of them is simple. If you have already missed the window, a gift at a farewell or when a teacher moves schools works the same way.
Tip: If your child is staying with the same teacher next year, the end-of-year moment is still cleaner than mid-term, but keep the gift at the smaller end.
2
What it does not fix
Size, and the school's own policy
Good timing is not a licence to spend more. If anything it argues for spending less, because the gesture no longer has to carry any weight on its own — the moment carries it. A single family giving a 50ml reed at ₹749 to ₹849, or a 3ml attar at ₹379 to ₹399, is well inside what any reasonable school would consider ordinary. Something several times that invites the question the timing just removed. And the school's rules still apply in the last week of term: many schools in India set a written value cap on gifts from parents, some ask staff to decline them in favour of a class collection, and a few say no altogether. It takes one question at the office to find out, and it is a much better question than the one that follows a gift being handed back.
The cleanest, most ungendered thing in the range, at ₹749.
Teachers receive a lot of cards in the last week of term and most of them say roughly the same four sentences. The ones that get kept say something only your family could have written: the particular week your child found something hard and what the teacher did about it, the thing they said at the school gate in October, the small kindness nobody else would have noticed. That is the part of this gift that cannot be bought, and it is the part that lasts long after a bottle has run out. Let your child write a line in their own hand underneath yours, spelling mistakes and all. In this category the note is the gift and the object is simply what it arrives in — I mean that literally, not as a consolation.
The SOSA principle
A gift at the end of the year is easy to accept precisely because the year is over. Nothing about it needs explaining, which is the kindest thing you can hand a teacher.
That is a point about timing and nothing else — no claim that a gift changes how a teacher thinks about a child or a family.
For a classroom or a staffroom shelf: Mountain Breeze — Himalayan pine, sage and cedar. Dry, unsweet, and quietly unshowy. From ₹849.
What changes between the middle of the year and the end of it, set out plainly.
The SOSA plan
Timing, and what each moment carries
When you give
How it reads
Last week of term
Cleanest. Marks are in, reports are done, nothing is pending. A gift can only mean thanks.
At a farewell or a move
Equally clean, and it licenses a little more warmth because the relationship is genuinely ending.
Mid-term, nothing pending
Workable if it is small, but the end of the year is still the better moment to wait for.
Before an assessment or a decision
Avoid. However innocently meant, it arrives next to something live and carries a question with it.
The underlying constraint on any parent gift is set out in the parent gift page, and if the last week of term is also a goodbye, the farewell page is the better one to read. SOSA is an independent Indian brand; nothing here is affiliated with any perfume house, designer or school, and no institution is a SOSA customer.
If you want the lowest-risk choice in the range: Morning Freshness — Malabar lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus, ₹749 for 50ml. Clean, ungendered, nothing to switch on.
One modest, passive thing handed over in the week when nothing is still being decided, with a card that says something specific. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Two limits. Good timing does not raise the ceiling: a single family giving more than about ₹849 is spending past the point where the gesture gets better. And school rules apply in June exactly as they do in November — many schools cap the value of parent gifts or ask staff to decline them, so check before you buy. We make no promise about delivery timing, gift wrapping or personalisation.

A note from Sonal
I like this question because the answer is mostly free. People arrive expecting to be told what to buy, and the most useful thing I can say is about when rather than what. Wait for the end of the year if you possibly can. A gift given in the last week of term has a clarity that no amount of choosing can give a gift handed over in the middle of February, and it costs nothing to wait.
On the object itself I would go smaller than most people expect. The last week of term is also the week a teacher is packing a room into boxes, so a passive thing that needs no power and no attention is kinder than something with a plug and a manual. A 50ml reed in a dry, unsweet register goes into a bag, comes out at home or in a staffroom, and asks nothing of anyone in between.
This is an ambience decision and nothing more: we make no outcome, therapeutic or medical claim, and no claim that a fragrance cleans, purifies or removes an odour — it never masks anything, it simply sits in a room alongside whatever else is there. The teacher's and the school's judgement overrides anything written here. Alcohol-free and DPG-free are ingredient facts about our attars, not skin or allergy claims; patch-test, and where somebody may be sensitive to fragrance, give the room instead. Everything is made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Why is an end-of-year gift better than one given mid-term?
Because nothing is pending. By the last week of term marks are in, reports have gone out and the year is finished, so a gift has nothing left to influence and can only be read as thanks. The same object given before an assessment carries a question that neither you nor the teacher can answer, however innocently it was meant.
How much should an end-of-year gift cost?
Roughly Rs 379 to Rs 849 from one family. The clean timing has already done the work that spending more would be trying to do, so there is nothing to gain above that. A 50ml reed diffuser at Rs 749 to Rs 849, or a 3ml attar at Rs 379 to Rs 399, sits comfortably inside what almost any school would consider ordinary.
Does the school's gift policy still apply at the end of the year?
Yes. Value caps and declaration rules are not seasonal, and some schools ask staff to decline parent gifts altogether in favour of a class fund. Ask the office before you buy. It is a far easier conversation than the one that follows a gift being handed back in front of other parents.
What should the card say?
One specific thing. Name the week your child found something hard and what the teacher did about it, or the small kindness nobody else would have noticed. Specific beats warm, and the specific cards are the ones teachers keep. Let your child write a line underneath in their own handwriting, mistakes included.
Which fragrance suits a classroom best?
Something dry and unsweet. Mountain Breeze at Rs 849, with Himalayan pine, sage and cedar, is the easiest to put down in a room several adults share. Morning Freshness at Rs 749 is the cleanest and most ungendered choice. Keep lavender and the sweeter registers for a gift you know is going home.
If the teacher is taking it home: Garden Bloom — British rose and night-blooming jasmine, ₹799. Warmer and softer, and wrong for a shared office.
SOSA — Clinic Scentingwhen the marks are in and nothing is pending
A 50ml reed from ₹749 to ₹849 — passive, unshowy and easy to carry home. A 3ml attar from ₹379 where you know the teacher well. A duo at ₹1,498 when several families have gone in together. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
