2. And a high-rise makes it more pronounced. Wind speed increases with height above the ground, because friction from buildings, trees and street clutter slows the air near the surface. On the eighteenth floor, the same balcony door open by the same amount produces a much stronger flow than it would on the second. 3. You lose twice, because the draught also raises evaporation. Evaporation from a reed depends on temperature and on air movement across the surface — moving air strips away the saturated layer sitting right at the fibre and lets more leave. Why a passive source loses to moving air
A reed diffuser has no fan, no heater and no reservoir of pressure. Its entire output is set by how fast fragrance oil can evaporate from the exposed length of six fibre reeds — a surface roughly the size of a few matchsticks. That output is fixed within a narrow band. You can nudge it up by adding reeds or by warming the room, and that is the whole of your control. Against that fixed, small supply, a cross-draught is not a competitor; it is a different order of magnitude. Moving air through a flat can replace the entire volume several times an hour. No passive source is designed to charge a room that fast, and none from any brand does.
The second mechanism is the one people miss, and it is the reason this feels unfair. Airflow across an evaporating surface increases the evaporation rate, because it keeps sweeping away the layer of vapour that would otherwise sit against the fibre and slow further release. This is the same reason wet clothes dry faster in a breeze than in still air of the same temperature. Three ways to work with the draught rather than against it

Placement in a ventilated flat
Map the flow before you decide anything. Open the two sides you normally open, take a strip of tissue or a light dupatta, and walk the flat holding it at chest height. You will find the line where air genuinely moves — usually the shortest path between the balcony door and the opposite window, funnelled through the passage — and you will find the pockets either side of it where almost nothing moves. This takes ninety seconds and it is the single most useful thing in this article. Diffusers go in the still pockets: an internal wall, behind the seating, in a recess, in the entrance lobby. Nothing goes on the console directly between the two openings, which is where most people put it because it is the prettiest spot in the flat.
Then allocate rooms by how much they breathe.
