Evening Calm ₹799
Oil refill 300ml ₹2,399
Day & Night duo ₹1,498
Humidity pushes the other way. Heavy air slows release from the reed surface, so a coastal flat can feel quieter in the room even while the level in the glass keeps falling.
Buy the bigger bottle, not a stronger scent. 130ml ₹1,249 or ₹1,349 runs 14–18 weeks and at six reeds projects the same. Size is the duration control.
Free fixes first. Off the sunny sill, away from the balcony draught, out of the fan's line. A bottle in afternoon sun empties without filling the room.
2. It does not make the room smell stronger in proportion. A warm flat is also a flat with fans running and doors open, and airflow carries scent away from the bottle faster than reeds release it. You can lose oil and lose the room at the same time.
3. Coastal humidity pushes in the opposite direction. When the air is heavy, release from the reed surface slows — which is exactly why a warm coastal flat behaves unlike a dry inland one.
4. The correction is size, not strength. Buy the 130ml at ₹1,349 rather than the 50ml at ₹849. It runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8, and at the same six reeds it projects identically. Size is the duration control; reed count is the volume control.
5. Or reduce the reeds and accept a quieter room. Four reeds instead of six in a small warm bedroom takes the output down and stretches the bottle. It costs nothing and is reversible in ten seconds.
6. Do the free things before either. Off the sunlit sill, off the top of the fridge, out of the line of a fan or an open balcony door. A bottle in a hot draughty spot empties fastest and delivers least.
7. From the second bottle onwards, buy oil rather than glass. A 300ml refill at ₹2,399 works out at roughly ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 for a fresh 50ml, into your own vessel and reeds.
Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C summer heat and 85% monsoon humidity, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Part one — two forces, pulling opposite ways
Most of what is written about diffusers and weather picks one variable and stops. Heat speeds evaporation; humidity slows it. Both are true, and in a coastal city they arrive together. Your whole experience of a reed diffuser in Chennai is the interference pattern between those two.
Morning Freshness₹749 · 50mlNow the other direction. When the air around a reed is already carrying a great deal of moisture, evaporation from that surface slows. In a coastal flat with the windows open to heavy air, that shows up as a room which reads softer than the same bottle would in a dry month — released grudgingly at the surface even while the warmth pushes it out. It is also why SOSA uses fibre reeds rather than rattan. Rattan is a natural cane whose pores swell and clog where the air stays heavy; the bottle then stops wicking and people conclude the oil was weak. Fibre does not close up that way, and we tested it through 85% humidity before selling anything.Part two — heat pushes, humid air pulls back
Six things that happen to a reed diffuser in a warm coastal flat, and the direction each force pushes them. These are directions of effect, not measurements.
| What is happening | Which way warmth pushes it | Which way heavy air pushes it | What you actually notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oil leaving the exposed reed ★ | Faster — more energy at the surface | Slower — the surface exchange has more to work against | A level that drops steadily while the room stays modest |
| How long the 50ml lasts | Shorter — towards six weeks rather than eight | Longer — heavy weeks stretch it back out | Net: usually the short end of 6–8 weeks |
| How loud the room reads in the afternoon | A little more vapour available | Softer release, and fans and open doors take it away | Quieter than the falling level suggests |
| The bright top notes in the composition | They leave sooner — lightest materials first | Little effect on which notes go first | A settled, base-leaning character within a fortnight |
| Where the wet line sits on a reed | Lower — the reed gives up oil quickly | Higher — reeds sit saturated for longer | High and dark in the heaviest weeks; flip more often |
| How often flipping helps | Weekly is enough on the dry side | Twice a week earns its keep when the air is heaviest | Gloves on, both ends coated, then leave it alone |
| The honest caveat: these are directions, not magnitudes. I cannot tell you that your bottle will lose a specific number of days to a warm week — a flat with a fan on and a balcony door open is a different room from one shut all afternoon, and airflow moves the result more than heat or humidity does alone. What I can say: a 50ml is quoted at 6–8 weeks and a 130ml at 14–18, warm rooms sit at the short end, heavy air pulls back towards the long one — and no reed diffuser reduces humidity or does anything corrective about moisture. | |||

Part three — when it is not the weather at all
Before you accept the climate as your answer, three cheaper explanations are worth ruling out. The first is position, and it is far and away the commonest. A bottle standing where the afternoon sun lands, or on top of a fridge, or in the line between an open balcony door and the hall, is not experiencing your city's weather but a small extreme version of it. Sun on glass warms the oil directly; a draught strips vapour off the reeds as fast as it forms. Both empty the bottle early and both deliver less to the room, which is the worst of the available outcomes. Move it a couple of feet inland from the window, onto a tray, at waist-to-chest height, out of the line of a fan, and give it a week before judging.
The second is your own nose, and this is not a product question either. You stop registering a constant smell in the room you live in — ordinary olfactory adaptation, and it works hardest at home on the fragrance you chose yourself. It is a common reason people conclude a bottle has failed when the oil level tells a perfectly healthy story. I will not put a number on how quickly it happens or promise any technique that resets it, because there is no honest number to give. The reliable checks are free: leave the flat and walk back in, or ask whoever arrives next what they notice at the door. Remember the shape of the curve too. The first three days of a new bottle are the loudest it will ever be — freshly soaked reeds, and the lightest top notes leaving at once. What follows is a settle, then a plateau that holds to the end. The plateau is the product. A hot flat only shortens the time axis.
The third is the case where the answer is not a SOSA product. If what actually prompted this question is a smell in the flat that you want gone — a drain, a damp cupboard, a bin, cooking that has settled into soft furnishings — then no reed diffuser is the tool, and a bigger one is the wrong thing bought twice. A reed diffuser adds a fragrance that sits alongside whatever is already in your air; it does not remove, neutralise, absorb, mask, purify or filter anything, and SOSA sells no air purifier and no dehumidifier. The order that works: find the source, ventilate or extract properly, and only then add fragrance. A flat that smells persistently musty is telling you something is still wet, and that is a building and ventilation matter rather than a shopping one.
Part four — what to buy for a warm coastal flat
Six versions of the same warm room. Reed count has its own column because in a hot flat it is the lever people forget they own.
| Your room | What I would buy | Reeds in | What a warm month does to it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hall or living room you occupy most of the day ★ | Mountain Breeze 130ml ₹1,349 | Six | 14–18 weeks, tending to the short end. Nothing sweet in it to thicken |
| Bedroom, door shut, small and warm | Evening Calm 50ml ₹799 | Four | Quieter and longer than six reeds would give you. Add the fifth if it fades |
| You want the brightest thing in the range | Morning Freshness 130ml ₹1,249 | Six | Citrus and eucalyptus read cleanly in warmth; the top notes still go first |
| Two rooms, one order, one budget | Day & Night duo, 2 × 50ml ₹1,498 | Six and four | Two sources beat one bigger bottle. Output per bottle is fixed |
| Your bottle keeps finishing in four or five weeks | Nothing yet — move it off the sill and out of the draught | Leave as is | ₹0. Sun and moving air do more damage than the season does |
| You already know which scent suits the flat | Oil refill 300ml ₹2,399 into your own glass | Reuse yours | Roughly 8–11 months in one 50ml vessel; ₹7–8 per ml against ₹15–17 |
Versailles
The reason I quote 6–8 weeks and 14–18 weeks rather than a single tidy number is this page. A range is the only honest way to describe a product whose speed is set by the room it stands in. A box that prints "lasts 60 days" is describing a laboratory, not a flat with a fan on in a warm coastal city.
We built the range around heat deliberately, on a heat-stable coconut-derived CCT carrier, and the choice is a trade I would rather state than hide. Phthalate solvents push fragrance hard off a reed and win the first week outright. They also degrade in heat, and by about week six in a warm flat what you have is not the fragrance you bought. We went phthalate-free: a smaller opening, and a longer flatter plateau that survives a hot month.
The thing I would most like a reader in a warm flat to take away is that heat is a bill rather than a benefit. It costs you weeks and gives nothing back in the room. Spend on duration — a 130ml, or oil into glass you already own — and leave the strength alone, because strength lives in the reed count and in where the bottle stands. Made in small batches in Pune, tested through 45°C heat and 85% humidity, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room. It does not clean, purify or filter air, remove or neutralise cooking, damp or smoke smells, reduce humidity, or change how anyone feels. A reed diffuser adds no moisture to the air; ultrasonic machines work by aerosolising water and therefore do. A persistent musty smell indicates moisture that needs finding and drying, and SOSA sells no dehumidifier or air purifier. Ventilate or extract first; add fragrance second. Evaporation rate rises with warmth and falls with humidity, and airflow carries scent away from the bottle — so performance varies with season, ventilation, ceiling height and room use; longevity figures are typical ranges, not guarantees. Not noticing a constant fragrance is ordinary olfactory adaptation; the reliable checks are leaving the room and returning, or asking someone who has just arrived. Strength figures are positions on SOSA’s own internal scale, not an industry standard. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep bottles away from open flame and out of direct sunlight, and out of reach of children and pets.
