The complete SOSA shelf under ₹500: four jar candles at ₹379, the Sandalwood jar at ₹449, ceramic mugs at ₹474, wax melts at ₹474, bubble candles from ₹474, and the 15ml Hotel Collection at ₹299.
Ranked first: the ₹449 Sandalwood jar candle for a home you don't know; the ₹474 mug if you are not sure anyone lights candles.
Ranked last: the ₹299 Hotel Collection — a refill for an ultrasonic machine, and a poor standalone gift for anyone who does not own one.
2. Why that matters here more than on any other kind of page. A housewarming gift is judged on whether it is still in use six weeks later. Everything acceptable on the day is acceptable on the day. The sub-₹500 shelf is where gifts go to be shelved, and I would rather tell you that before the list than after it.
3. Ranked first: the Sandalwood jar candle, ₹449. A single familiar note, a plain label and glass with real weight. It is the item on this shelf I would be happiest handing over in front of other guests, and sandalwood divides a room less than any other warm fragrance in an Indian home.
4. Ranked second: the Everyday Beautiful ceramic mug, ₹474. It asks nothing at all — no flame, no habit, no shelf of its own — and it gets used from the first morning in a kitchen that is still three boxes deep. It is a small gift and reads as one, which is right for a colleague or a neighbour and thin for a sibling.
5. Ranked third: the four ₹379 jar candles. Roughly 15–18 hours each. Excellent gifts for a household that lights candles and ornaments for one that does not, which is the whole of the judgement you need to make.
6. Ranked fourth, with a condition: wax melts at ₹474. The most fragrance per rupee in the band, and unusable without a wax burner that we do not sell and that a household mid-move almost certainly has not unpacked.
7. Ranked last: the 15ml Hotel Collection at ₹299. It is the cheapest fragrance on the store, which is why searches keep finding it, and it is a water-based refill for an ultrasonic machine. Given to somebody who does not own one it is a small bottle with no purpose.
8. The step up, stated once. ₹749 buys a format rather than a bigger version of the same thing: something that works continuously for 6–8 weeks without anyone doing anything to it. Free shipping also begins at ₹499, so every item ranked above arrives with a delivery charge and the ₹749 bottle does not.
Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Part one — how this ranking works, and what it deliberately ignores
Most gift lists rank by how appealing an item is in a photograph. That is a reasonable way to sell things and a poor way to choose a housewarming present, because the photograph is judged on the day and the gift is judged in October. I have ranked this shelf on three questions instead, in this order: is it still doing something in six weeks, does it need the recipient to supply anything, and does it survive being opened in front of other guests. Price appears nowhere in the ranking; every item here is within a hundred rupees or so of every other, and the difference between them is not money.
Misty Mornings₹379Run down the six items and the pattern is impossible to miss. A jar candle asks for a lighter, a safe surface and somebody at home who wants a scent right now. Wax melts ask for a burner. The 15ml Hotel Collection asks for an entire ultrasonic machine. Only the ceramic mug asks for nothing, which is precisely why it ranks as high as it does despite being the least impressive object on the shelf. In the month after a move, the household's scarcest resource is not money or space — it is attention, and every request a gift makes is a small draw on it. This is the single reason the reed format sits where it does in our range: it is the only thing we sell that starts working when it is put down and keeps working whether anyone is home or not.Part two — the whole SOSA shelf under ₹500, ranked
Six items, in order, with what each one is genuinely good for and where it stops. The ranking is mine and it is arguable; what is not arguable is the last column, which is the part most lists leave out.
| Rank | Item | Price | Still doing something at six weeks? | Who it is right for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 ★ | Sandalwood jar candle | ₹449 | Only if they light it — but it looks right on the day and in the room | A home you have not been inside; a gift opened in company |
| 2 | Everyday Beautiful ceramic mug | ₹474 | Yes — used daily from the first morning, no habit required | A colleague, a neighbour, anyone whose habits you do not know |
| 3 | Cozy Corner / Misty Mornings jar candle | ₹379 | Roughly 15–18 hours in total, spread over occasional evenings | A household you have actually seen light a candle |
| 4 | Book Shop / Evening Walks jar candle | ₹379 | The same, with a more specific character to get right | Someone whose taste you know well enough to be specific |
| 5 | Forest Walk wax melts | ₹474 | Longest life in the band — if they own a burner. Zero if not | Only a household you have seen use melts already |
| 6 | Bubble candles, from ₹474 | ₹474 | Decorative first; often kept unlit and treated as an object | Someone who likes a sculptural piece more than a fragrance |
| Not ranked | Hotel Collection 15ml | ₹299 | No — it is a refill for a machine, not a gift in itself | Only someone who already owns an ultrasonic diffuser |
| The honest caveat: not one row of this table is a reed diffuser, and there is no row I could add that would be. SOSA's reed range begins at ₹749 with Morning Freshness 50ml and has no smaller or cheaper format. If a reed diffuser is what you came for, this table is not a cheaper route to it — it is a list of different gifts, each good in its own way, each with a condition written beside it. The next section argues the step across the line once, and then this page stops asking. | ||||

Morning Freshness · the floor₹749Shop →
Part three — the ₹749 step, argued once and then left alone
Here is the case for crossing the line, made properly and made only here. The step from ₹474 to ₹749 does not buy you a larger version of anything on the table above. It buys a different mechanism. A reed diffuser is a refillable glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds standing in it; the oil climbs the fibre and evaporates off the exposed length continuously, whether the household is at home, asleep, at work or away for the weekend. There is nothing to switch on and nothing to remember except turning the reeds over once a week, and even forgetting that only makes it quieter. A 50ml runs 6–8 weeks. Against a candle's handful of evenings, that is not an upgrade in degree; it is a different relationship between the gift and the people receiving it.
Then the money, which is less than it appears. Free shipping on the SOSA store begins at ₹499, and every single item in the ranking above falls short of it — the ₹379 jars by the widest margin, the ₹474 mug and melts by a hair. Add up an under-₹500 order and you will find it stops just below the threshold, so a delivery charge attaches itself to the cheaper gift and not to the ₹749 one. The only way to clear the line while staying in the band is to buy two items, at which point you have spent more than ₹749 and given two small gifts instead of one whole one — which, as the ranking above implies, is usually a worse outcome in a home with nowhere to put things. That is the entire arithmetic. It is not a discount and I am not going to call it one; it is simply the reason "₹379 versus ₹749" overstates the gap.
And now the counter-argument, because it is real and this page would be dishonest without it. If your budget is genuinely ₹500, the ₹449 candle is not a compromise — it is the correct size of gesture for a colleague, a neighbour, a friend of a friend, or anyone whose flat you are visiting for the first time. Spending twice as much on a person you know slightly is conspicuous rather than generous, and getting the scale of a gift right matters more than getting the object right. Cross the line if the ₹500 in your head was a round number rather than a limit, or if the relationship is a close one and you would feel the gap while handing it over. Otherwise buy the candle, hand it over without apology, and ignore everything above.
Part four — what to send, by who is receiving it
The ranking rearranges itself depending on who you are buying for. Seven recipients, the under-₹500 answer for each, and — in the column that matters — whether I would actually send it or step up.
| Recipient | Under-₹500 answer | Would I send it? | The alternative above the line |
|---|---|---|---|
| A colleague you know slightly ★ | Sandalwood jar candle ₹449 | Yes — this is exactly the right scale of gift | None needed. Do not overspend on a colleague |
| A neighbour on your floor | Everyday Beautiful mug ₹474 | Yes — small, useful and it asks nothing of them | Evening Calm ₹799 if you will be seeing them daily |
| A friend whose flat you have never seen | Misty Mornings jar candle ₹379 | Only if you know they light candles | Garden Bloom ₹799 — the safe blind buy |
| A sibling or a very close friend | Nothing here reads right | No — ₹500 will feel thin and you will know it | Mountain Breeze ₹849, or a two-bottle duo ₹1,498 |
| A household with a wax burner you have seen | Forest Walk wax melts ₹474 | Yes — best value in the band, for that household only | Not required; the melts are genuinely the better fit |
| Someone who already owns an ultrasonic diffuser | Hotel Collection 15ml ₹299, as an extra | Only alongside something else — never on its own | The 100ml at ₹999 if you want it to be the whole gift |
| A couple, first home together | Nothing in this band covers two rooms | No — one small item for two people reads as a token | A two-bottle duo from ₹1,498, two rooms covered |
Versailles
Ranking your own shelf in public is uncomfortable, which is probably why so few brands do it. It means writing down that one of your products is the wrong gift, that another only works for people who own a specific object, and that the thing customers most often ask for at this price does not exist. I would rather do that than write a list where every item is somehow perfect for everyone. Nobody believes those lists, and they are useless to someone standing in a shop with a housewarming on Sunday.
The ₹299 bottle is the one I feel most strongly about. It is our cheapest fragrance, so every low-budget search finds it first, and it is a refill for a machine. I have heard about it being handed over at a door more than once, and the moment where the recipient works out what it is has no good version.
What I will not do is pretend the reed range reaches down here. It starts at ₹749 because a reed diffuser is almost entirely fragrance oil — cut the price and you cut the only thing in the bottle. Below that line we make candles, and they are good candles, and they are a different gift. Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
