The bands: ₹749–₹849 for one 50ml — colleagues, neighbours, cousins, anyone you know slightly. ₹1,249–₹1,349 for one 130ml — a boss, an aunt, a close friend's first flat. ₹1,498–₹1,598 for a two-bottle duo — siblings, best friends, couples.
The default scent when you know nothing: Garden Bloom ₹799. The default when they dislike "scented" things: Mountain Breeze ₹849. The one to avoid blind: Fresh Brew ₹849.
What a reed diffuser is: a glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds that wick it into the room. No flame, no electricity, no switch, nothing to install.
2. Cousin or extended family — one 50ml at ₹799, and buy the safest scent. The mid-distance relationship: close enough that turning up empty-handed would be noticed, not close enough to know what they like. Garden Bloom at ₹799 exists for this row.
3. Boss — one 130ml, ₹1,249–₹1,349, and one object rather than a set. The ceiling matters more than the floor here. A duo at ₹1,598 is barely more money and reads as a familiarity you may not have.
4. Best friend or sibling — a duo, ₹1,498–₹1,598. You know their taste, so the risk is not the scent, it is under-spending on someone who will notice. Two bottles cover two rooms and read as considered.
5. A newly married couple — a duo, and keep the two bottles in different rooms. A single bottle in a shared home decides for both of them; two bottles let each of them end up next to the one they prefer.
6. Someone you have never met — ₹799, Garden Bloom, and no further deliberation. Rose and night-blooming jasmine read as familiar in an Indian home and are the least likely to be anyone's line in the sand.
7. Below the reed range, be honest about what you are giving. The cheapest SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749; below it are jar candles from ₹379, a Sandalwood jar at ₹449, wax melts and mugs at ₹474 and a ceramic trinket dish at ₹664. These are real gifts and none of them is a diffuser.
Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Part one — the two inputs, and why people keep merging them
A matrix is only useful if its axes are genuinely independent, and this one has two: how close the relationship is, and how much you actually know about the person's taste. They feel like the same variable and they are not. You can have known your brother for thirty years and have no idea what he wants a room to smell like; you can have met a colleague's wife twice and know, because she said so at a lunch, that she cannot bear anything floral. Distance decides how much to spend. Information decides what to buy. Keep them apart and the decision takes seconds. Merge them — which is what most gift guides do — and you end up spending a lot of money on a guess.
Mountain Breeze₹849 · 50mlThere are really only four information states, and they map cleanly onto four bottles. You know nothing: Garden Bloom at ₹799, the safest blind buy in the range. You know they dislike florals or anything they would call "scented": Mountain Breeze at ₹849, dry pine, sage and cedar. You know the flat is small and the recipient is cautious: Evening Calm at ₹799, the softest thing we make. You know their taste runs warm and you are confident: Fresh Brew at ₹849, coffee and vanilla — the strongest in the range and the least safe blind buy. That last one is the only bottle here that requires actual knowledge rather than the absence of it.Part two — the relationship matrix
Nine relationships, and for each one the band, the size and the bottle. The column that does most of the work is the third — what you typically know about their taste — because it is the one people forget to check before spending. There are no prices for anything outside the SOSA range in this table; the question here is what to send, not what other categories cost.
| Relationship | Spend band that reads right | What you typically know about their taste | What I would send | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cousin or extended family ★ | ₹749–₹849 · one 50ml | Almost nothing — expected to attend, not close enough to ask | Garden Bloom 50ml | ₹799 |
| Colleague | ₹749–₹849 · one 50ml | Work self only; other colleagues will see the gift | Mountain Breeze 50ml — neutral, nothing personal in it | ₹849 |
| Neighbour | ₹749–₹849 · one 50ml | A surname and a floor number | Evening Calm 50ml — the least assertive option | ₹799 |
| Boss or senior colleague | ₹1,249–₹1,349 · one 130ml, never a set | Nothing personal, and you should not appear to | Mountain Breeze 130ml | ₹1,349 |
| Aunt, uncle or an older relative | ₹1,249–₹1,349 · one 130ml | Usually warm and traditional, and you can ask someone | Garden Bloom 130ml | ₹1,299 |
| Best friend | ₹1,498–₹1,598 · a two-bottle duo | A great deal — and you will be in that flat often | Warmth & Bloom duo | ₹1,598 |
| Sister or brother | ₹1,498–₹1,598 · a duo, or 2 × 130ml | Everything, including what they will refuse | Fresh & Grounded duo, or 2 × 130ml at ₹2,548 | ₹1,548 |
| A newly married couple | ₹1,498–₹1,598 · a duo, two rooms | One of them well, the other barely | Day & Night duo — keep a door between the bottles | ₹1,498 |
| Someone you have never met | ₹749–₹799 · one 50ml | Nothing whatsoever | Morning Freshness or Garden Bloom 50ml | ₹749–₹799 |
| The honest caveat: a matrix is a starting point, not an instruction. If anyone in the household has said they dislike scented things, or is fragrance-sensitive, or there is a newborn, no row in this table applies — a diffuser works continuously and cannot be politely shelved. And if you have specific knowledge that beats the row, use the knowledge. The table is for the ordinary case where all you have is the relationship. | ||||

Part three — where the matrix stops working
Three situations override every row above, and it is worth naming them plainly rather than letting a table do the thinking. The first is a stated dislike. If anyone in the household has said they do not like scented things, the relationship column is irrelevant — a reed diffuser is not a gift that can be put in a cupboard for two months, because it works continuously from the moment it is set down. The same holds for anyone who has told you they are sensitive to fragrance, and for a home with a newborn in it. In those cases go sideways rather than cheaper: the ceramic trinket dish at ₹664 or the Everyday Beautiful mugs at ₹474 are small, useful and involve nobody's nose.
The second is a workplace rule. Several Indian employers cap what colleagues may spend on one another, and a few prohibit gifts upward entirely. A published policy beats every band in the table and it is worth two minutes of asking before you buy anything for a manager. The third is a group arrangement — if six people are pooling, the pooled total is the relevant number and the individual rows stop applying. A duo makes a perfectly good group gift from a team even though it is the wrong shape from one junior person giving alone.
And one thing the matrix cannot fix, which comes up more often than any of the above: a new flat smells of paint, polish and sometimes damp, and fragrance does not remove that. Nothing standing on a shelf does. Ventilation and time are the remedy — windows open, fans running, several weeks — and a diffuser put down in week one sits alongside the paint until the paint fades. Say that when you hand it over, in whatever relationship you are in. It is more useful than any claim on this page, and it means the bottle gets judged in the week it can actually do its job.
Part four — the scent index, read the other way round
Some people arrive at this page knowing the person's taste better than they know the etiquette. For them the matrix is upside down, so here it is inverted: five bottles, three duos, and which relationships each one belongs in. The last column is the one worth reading twice — where each scent is a mistake.
| Product | Character | Price | Relationships it suits | Where it is a mistake |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Garden Bloom ★ | British rose · night-blooming jasmine — floral, rounded | ₹799 · ₹1,299 | Cousins, elders, anyone unmet, most colleagues | A household that has said it dislikes florals |
| Mountain Breeze | Himalayan pine · sage · cedar — dry, woody, nothing sweet | ₹849 · ₹1,349 | A boss, a brother, a colleague, anyone who rejects "scented" things | Rarely — this is the safest non-floral in the range |
| Evening Calm | Kashmir lavender · chamomile — the softest we make | ₹799 · ₹1,299 | Neighbours, small flats, cautious recipients | Going upward at work — lavender reads as a bedroom register |
| Morning Freshness | Malabar lemon · peppermint · eucalyptus — clean rather than perfumed | ₹749 · ₹1,249 | Anyone; the lowest honest entry price in the range | When you want the gift to feel warm rather than fresh |
| Fresh Brew | Coorg coffee · Kerala vanilla — warm and the strongest in the range | ₹849 · ₹1,349 | Siblings and close friends whose taste you actually know | Any blind buy — it is the most polarising thing we sell |
| Day & Night duo | Two 50ml bottles — bright for the day, soft for the night | ₹1,498 | Couples and two-room flats with a door between | A studio — two compositions in one room collide |
| Fresh & Grounded duo | Two 50ml bottles, no floral in either, sharing a green note | ₹1,548 | Brothers, and households with one fragrance sceptic in them | Someone who specifically wanted something warm |
| Warmth & Bloom duo | Two 50ml bottles meeting on warmth — they tolerate connected rooms | ₹1,598 | Best friends, sisters, hospitable households | A boss — a set is a familiarity you may not have |
Versailles
This page exists because of a message I get several times a month, usually on a Friday, usually phrased in a hurry. It is never "tell me about your compositions". It is "housewarming on Sunday, it's my cousin, what do I send". The person asking does not want a philosophy of gifting; they want a row in a table and a link. So I wrote the table.
What surprised me, assembling it, was how often the answer is cheaper than the person expected. People arrive braced to spend ₹1,598 and leave with a ₹799 bottle because the relationship did not ask for more than that. I would rather that happened than the reverse. A gift that overshoots does not read as generous in most of these relationships; it reads as slightly effortful, and the recipient has to do something about it.
I will not claim any of this makes a gift memorable or impressive. I have no way of knowing how a gift will be received and neither does anybody publishing a list. What I can tell you is what the object does: it stands on a shelf in a home still full of cartons, it needs no socket and no supervision, and it works from the day it is put down until the oil is gone — six to eight weeks at 50ml, fourteen to eighteen at 130ml. Everything is made in Pune, in small batches, and a part of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.
