The developer-desk scent problem

A developer at their desk presents three constraints no other knowledge worker shares at the same intensity. The first is duration. A serious coding session is rarely less than 90 minutes and often runs 4 to 6 hours. By the standards of olfactory fatigue, this is an extreme exposure window - most consumer fragrances saturate the receptor within 90 minutes and stop being perceived at all.

The placement protocol in this article was largely figured out by a backend engineer in Panipat in 2024 who emailed us with a very specific complaint - he had bought Morning Freshness, loved it for the first week, and then stopped smelling it after about ten days.
