Founder Diaries · Diwali 2026 · Last-Minute
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 13 min read Updated August 2026
A staff list is the last-minute problem multiplied, and the multiplication is not in the money. It is in the thinking. Thirty names means thirty small judgements about taste, diet, household and seniority, and you have run out of the one thing those judgements need, which is time. The reason this feels impossible is that you are still trying to solve it the considered way. Do not. On a staff list the correct method is not thirty decisions made quickly; it is one decision made properly and applied to a whole tier — the same object, the same scent, the same price, for everyone at that level. That is not a shortcut forced on you by the calendar. It is what I would tell you to do with six weeks in hand, because a gift that varies across a floor invites a comparison, and a gift that does not vary cannot be compared. And before any of it: if this has to be physically in someone’s hands on a particular day, buy something locally. We cannot promise you a date, so we will not.
Quick answers — read this first
The one-line answer: pick one thing and give it to everyone in the tier. Evening Calm ₹799 is the safest single decision across a mixed staff list — 8.9 on the SOSA strength scale, the softest thing we make, and lavender carries almost no cultural loading in an Indian home. Morning Freshness ₹749 is the cheapest reed and the better per-head figure on a long list.

The honest gap, first of two mentions: if the gift has to be in a particular person’s hands on a particular day — a floor gathering, a last working session before the office empties — buy something locally instead. No page on this website will tell you when a parcel lands, because we cannot verify it, and a promise broken on a staff list is broken thirty times.

If the per-head figure is under ₹749: there is no reed diffuser below that price and no diffuser machine below ₹899. The honest shelf is the Sandalwood Scented Candle ₹449, the Smoked Oudh Scented Candle ₹449, a two-pack of jar candles at ₹664, or a single message-free jar candle at ₹379.

What does not exist: no bulk rate, no discount band, no GST arrangement, no custom branding, no minimum order, no gift set, no gift box, no gift card, no wrap, no note and no personalisation. For anything above roughly twenty-five units, write to us through the contact page before you order — availability by scent varies, and it is better to ask than to assume.
The short answer
Short answer: one 50ml reed diffuser per person, the same scent for everyone in the tier. Evening Calm at ₹799 if the per-head figure allows it, Morning Freshness at ₹749 if it is tight, and the ₹449 candles if the figure sits under the reed floor. Never lead Fresh Brew ₹849 on a staff list — it is a warm gourmand at 9.5, superb for a coffee lover and the least safe thing to hand to somebody you have never asked.
Why this is a decision problem and not a timing one: a last-minute buyer has not lost money or options, they have lost research. So the right gift is the one that needs no research to be safe. A home fragrance is addressed to a room rather than to a body: no size to guess, no dietary check across thirty people, no personalisation to compose, no taste judgement about someone you have spoken to twice, and no follow-up thought once it has been handed over. That is four variables removed in a single purchase.
Arithmetic at real prices, with no bulk rate anywhere: twenty people at ₹799 is ₹15,980. Thirty at ₹749 is ₹22,470. Forty at ₹449 is ₹17,960. Fifty at ₹379 is ₹18,950. Fifteen at ₹664 is ₹9,960. Those are list prices with nothing taken off, because there is nothing to take off. A large mixed-scent order is easier than a large single-scent one, since each of the five reeds is stocked separately. Free shipping above ₹499.
Straight answer
I have a staff list and almost no time. What do I buy?
1. Make one decision, not thirty. Sort the list into tiers — usually two, occasionally three — and choose a single item for each tier. The moment you start individualising, you have signed up for thirty pieces of research you do not have time to do, and you have also introduced the one failure mode that matters on a floor: two people opening different things next to each other. Evening Calm at ₹799 is the decision I would make for a mixed list.

2. Choose for low polarisation, not for generosity. On a list of thirty, the scent that offends nobody beats the scent that delights six people. Evening Calm sits at 8.9 on our strength scale, the softest thing we make, and lavender arrives in an Indian home carrying almost nothing with it. Rose, jasmine, coffee and pine all arrive pre-attached to a memory. Never lead Fresh Brew ₹849 across a staff list, however much you like it yourself.

3. Buy identically within a tier, and let the tiers be obvious. A gift that varies invites arithmetic in the corridor. A gift that does not vary is simply the company’s gift, and nobody examines it. If you must have a second tier, make the difference a size or a duo rather than a different category, so it reads as scale and not as favour.

4. If the per-head figure is under ₹749, stop looking for a reed. There is not one, at any size, and there is no diffuser machine under ₹899. The honest shelf below the floor is the Smoked Oudh or Sandalwood candle at ₹449, a two-pack of jar candles at ₹664, or one message-free jar candle at ₹379. Use the message-free jars only. Some of our candles carry printed lines meant for a sibling or a partner, and none of them belong on an employee’s desk.

5. If it has to be in hand on a particular day, buy locally — and if the list is long, ask first. That is the whole of our honesty on timing: we do not publish dispatch promises, so treat this page as advice on what to give, not on when it lands. For anything above roughly twenty-five units, write through the contact page before ordering, because availability by scent varies and a large single-scent order is harder than a large mixed one.

Alcohol-free, phthalate-free, made in Pune. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: one decision, applied identically across a tier. Evening Calm ₹799 for a mixed staff list, Morning Freshness ₹749 when the per-head figure is tight, the ₹449 candles below the ₹749 reed floor. No bulk rate, no branding, no message candles. And if the date is immovable, buy locally.
SOSA Evening Calm lavender and chamomile reed diffuser
One decision, thirty times
Evening Calm · Kashmir lavender + chamomile ₹799 / 50ml
The softest thing we make at 8.9, and the reason it is the default for a staff list is not that it is the most impressive scent in the range. It is that it is the least likely to be wrong in a house I have never seen. Lavender and chamomile with a soft musk drydown, six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle, 6–8 weeks of continuous use with nothing for the recipient to switch on, refill or remember.

Why a staff list is the last-minute problem multiplied — and why that is fixable

The anxiety on a corporate list at this point in the season is rarely about money. Most people who write to us have the budget settled before they have the gift settled. What they have run out of is the capacity to think about thirty individual people, and they are treating that as a personal failure rather than as what it actually is, which is an arithmetic property of lists. Research does not scale. A gift chosen for one person takes twenty minutes of knowing them; the same method applied to a floor takes ten hours you were never going to have, in any season, with any amount of notice. The people who look organised in the festive week are not the ones who started earlier. They are the ones who made a single decision and stopped.

1
CRITERION ONE · NO RESEARCH REQUIRED
Give something addressed to a room, not to a body
Evening Calm reed diffuserEvening Calm₹799Every gift that is addressed to a person carries a question you must answer before you buy it. Clothing asks for a size. Food asks about sugar, ghee, nuts, dairy and whichever fast somebody in that household keeps. A personal fragrance asks what they like to smell of, which is among the most private questions there is and a strange one to answer on behalf of someone in the accounts team. A home fragrance asks nothing. It goes to a hall console or a bedside in a house you will never visit, and it is used by a household rather than worn by a person. That is why Evening Calm can be bought safely for thirty people you know slightly — not because it is universally loved, but because there is no question it needed you to answer.
The test: if you have to know something about the person before you can complete the purchase, it is the wrong gift for a list.
2
CRITERION TWO · IDENTICAL WITHIN A TIER
Variation is the risk, not the thoughtfulness
Morning Freshness reed diffuserMorning Freshness₹749The failure mode nobody plans for is not a disliked gift. It is two colleagues opening two different things at neighbouring desks and one of them doing the sum. An employer’s gift is read as a statement about standing, whether or not you meant it that way, and the moment it varies within a peer group it stops being a courtesy and becomes information. Identical removes the whole conversation. Practically, that means one scent and one size across a tier — Morning Freshness ₹749 is the cheapest reed we make and therefore the easiest to hold identical across a long list. If there is a second tier for a leadership group, make the step obvious and structural rather than personal: a Day & Night duo at ₹1,498 reads as scale. A different category reads as favour.
The test: could two people at the same level compare their gifts and learn nothing? If yes, you have done it correctly.
3
CRITERION THREE · NO FOLLOW-UP THOUGHT
The gift must finish when you hand it over
SOSA Cozy Corner scented jar candleJar candle two-pack₹664Some gifts continue to need you after they have been given. Anything perishable puts a small deadline into someone’s week. Anything that needs hardware — and this is why the ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a machine refill and never a standalone gift — needs the recipient to already own something they almost certainly do not. Anything requiring assembly, a size exchange or a follow-up message is a task wearing a ribbon. A reed diffuser is complete when the box opens: bottle, oil, six fibre reeds, nothing to plug in, nothing to buy alongside, nothing to remember. Below the reed floor the ₹664 two-pack and the ₹449 singles behave the same way, with the single difference that a candle has to be lit and a reed does not.
The test: after you hand it over, is there anything left for either of you to do? There should not be.

The arithmetic, and the four things that do not exist

Let us do the sums plainly, because on a staff list the sums are most of the decision. Twenty people at Evening Calm ₹799 is ₹15,980. Thirty at Morning Freshness ₹749 is ₹22,470. Twenty-five at ₹749 is ₹18,725. If the per-head figure is five hundred rupees, forty people at the ₹449 Sandalwood candle is ₹17,960 and fifty at a ₹379 jar candle is ₹18,950. Fifteen people at the ₹664 two-pack is ₹9,960. Those are the list prices exactly as they appear on the product pages, with nothing taken off them, and I would rather you planned against real numbers than against a discount that does not exist.

Which brings me to the four things I am asked for every season and have to decline every season. There is no bulk rate and no discount band. There is no special GST arrangement, no custom branding, no logo printing, no minimum order quantity and no dedicated account manager. There is also no gift set, gift box, gift hamper, gift card, gift wrap, gift note or personalisation of any kind — the closest thing to a set in the range is a duo, which is honestly just two 50ml bottles sold together. I am aware this makes a shorter page than my competitors write. It is the accurate page, and on a corporate list an accurate page is worth more than an optimistic one, because you are the person who has to stand behind the gift internally.

The one genuinely useful thing I can tell you about quantity is structural rather than commercial. Each of the five reeds is stocked separately, so a large single-scent order is harder to fill than a large mixed-scent one. A buyer who will accept an assortment — say lavender for one floor and lemon for another, or a mix inside one tier — has considerably more room than a buyer who needs a hundred identical bottles of one thing. I will not publish a stock figure, because it changes daily and would date this page within a week. What I will say is the shape of the constraint, and the sensible response to it: for anything above roughly twenty-five units, write to us through the contact page before you order. It is better to ask than to assume, and asking costs you a message.

What each per-head figure actually buys

Read this table as a set of tiers rather than a ranking. Find your per-head figure on the left, take the single item on that row, and give it to everybody in that tier. The right-hand column is the one that matters on a compressed timeline: how many judgements you still have to make after you have chosen the row.

Three tiers, one decision each
The SOSA principle
An employee gift is not judged against the ideal gift. It is judged against the one the person at the next desk received.
Which is why identical within a tier is not laziness. It is the only version of the gift that cannot be read as a ranking.

When sweets are genuinely the better call — and they often are

I should say plainly where I would not use our own product. If your gift is meant to do something on the day — in the office, in front of everybody, in the hour before people leave — a tray of mithai does that and a bottle does not. Sweets are a shared, immediate, communal object. They get opened at the pantry counter, they get passed along a row of desks, and for twenty minutes the floor feels like a festival rather than a Thursday. That is a real thing to want and no home fragrance replaces it. If the point of your gift is the moment, buy the sweets and buy them near your office, and do not let a website talk you out of it.

The two are also not in competition as often as gifting pages pretend. Plenty of good employers do both: something communal for the floor on the day, and something individual that goes home with each person. What I would resist is the version where the individual gift is also edible, because that is where the dietary arithmetic across thirty people gets genuinely difficult, where duplication becomes near-certain in a week when every household is receiving boxes, and where the gift has quietly become a small obligation with a shelf life attached. A room-addressed gift avoids all three of those, and it is still working six to eight weeks later, long after the festive week has been cleared away.

The people who look organised in the festive week did not start earlier. They made one decision and stopped.

The tier edit, in buying order — and the honest gap

Here is the whole shelf as it applies to a staff list, in the order I would work down it, with the last row reserved for the case where you should not buy from us at all. Everything above the ₹749 line is a reed diffuser; everything below it is a candle, and the reason is simply that the cheapest reed we make is ₹749 and there is no version of it at any smaller size.

The complete staff-list edit
What to buy for a whole tier, and when to buy nothing here at all
Buy What it is When it is the right answer Price
1. Evening Calm 50ml ★ Kashmir lavender, chamomile, soft musk — 8.9, the softest in the range The default for any mixed staff list where the per-head figure reaches ₹799 ₹799
2. Morning Freshness 50ml Malabar lemon, peppermint, eucalyptus — the cheapest reed we make When the list is long and the per-head figure has to hold at ₹749 ₹749
3. Mountain Breeze 50ml Himalayan pine, sage, Indian cedar — least gendered, least sweet For a floor of people you genuinely cannot read, or a mostly-male senior tier ₹849
4. Jar candle two-pack Two message-free 80g soy candles, roughly 30–36 hours together The best object below the reed floor when ₹664 a head is the ceiling ₹664
5. Smoked Oudh / Sandalwood A single candle with a named material rather than a decorative one The ₹500-a-head tier, held identical across everybody in it ₹449
6. Day & Night duo Two 50ml bottles sold together — not a boxed set, and we do not sell one A small leadership tier where the step should read as scale, not favour ₹1,498
The honest gap: buy locally, or write to us If the gift must be physically in someone’s hands on a particular day, buy something near your office. We publish no dispatch or delivery promise and will not invent one. Separately, there is no bulk rate, branding, minimum or lead time here Whenever the date is immovable — and above roughly twenty-five units, ask through the contact page first, because availability by scent varies —
Honest notes for buyers: these are alcohol-free reed diffusers on a heat-stable CCT base, phthalate-free, paraben-free, IFRA-compliant and 0 ppm formaldehyde, with six fibre reeds in a refillable glass bottle. Use only the message-free jar candles on a staff list. Several candles in our range carry printed lines written for a sibling or a partner, and none of them belong in a workplace — the four core jars, the ₹664 two-pack and the ₹449 Sandalwood and Smoked Oudh singles are the only candles I would put on an employee list. The ₹299 Hotel Collection 15ml is a refill for an ultrasonic machine and is not a standalone gift. Free shipping above ₹499, which a single ₹379 candle does not clear on its own and a ₹749 reed does. SOSA Morning Freshness reed diffuser
The long-list answer
Morning Freshness · Malabar lemon + mint ₹749 / 50ml
The cheapest reed diffuser we make and, at volume, the easiest one to hold identical across a floor. Cold-pressed Malabar lemon over peppermint on a eucalyptus globulus base, 9.0 on the SOSA strength scale, bright without being loud. Thirty of them is ₹22,470 at list price, which is the only price there is. Six fibre reeds in every bottle, 6–8 weeks of use, nothing to plug in.

A note from Sonal

The messages we get in the last week of the season all sound the same and they are almost never about money. Somebody has a list of twenty-eight names, a figure per head that is perfectly reasonable, and a growing conviction that they have left it too late to be thoughtful. I think that conviction is simply wrong. Thoughtfulness on a staff list was never going to look like twenty-eight individual insights. It looks like one good judgement about what is safe in a house you have not seen, applied without wavering.

That is why I keep pushing people towards Evening Calm for this job rather than the scents I am personally proudest of. Fresh Brew is the deepest thing we make and I love it, and I would not put it on a list of thirty strangers, because a gourmand is a strong opinion and half your floor did not ask for one. Lavender is not a strong opinion. On a list, that is the whole qualification.

And the part I will not soften: if this gift has to be in someone’s hands on a specific day, buy it near your office. We do not publish a delivery promise, so I am not going to imply one at the exact moment you are least able to absorb a mistake. Everything on this page is advice about what to choose, and it holds whether you buy it from us or not. Everything we make is composed in Pune, and a part of every order funds a girl’s classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best last-minute Diwali gift for employees?
One 50ml reed diffuser per person, the same one for everybody in the tier. Evening Calm at ₹799 is the safest single decision across a mixed list, and Morning Freshness at ₹749 is the cheapest reed if the per-head figure is tight. Below ₹749 there is no reed at all, and the honest answer is the ₹449 Sandalwood or Smoked Oudh candle, a ₹664 two-pack, or a ₹379 jar.
Should everyone on the list get exactly the same thing?
Within a tier, yes, and it is the single most useful rule on this page. An employer’s gift is read as a statement about standing whether you intended that or not, so anything that varies between peers becomes information rather than a courtesy. If you need a second tier, make the step structural — a larger item or a duo at ₹1,498 — rather than a different category of object.
My per-head budget is under ₹500. What can I actually buy?
Not a reed diffuser and not a diffuser machine — the cheapest reed is ₹749 and the cheapest machine is ₹899, and I would rather say so than sell you something smaller that does not exist. The real sub-₹500 shelf is the Sandalwood ₹449 and Smoked Oudh ₹449 candles, wax melts at ₹474, and the message-free jar candles at ₹379. Forty people at ₹449 is ₹17,960. Use only the message-free candles; several in the range carry printed lines that are wrong for a workplace.
Is there a bulk rate, a discount or company branding for a large staff order?
No to all three, and also no minimum order, no GST scheme, no lead time and no gift wrap, note or personalisation. What I can tell you usefully is that each of the five reeds is stocked separately, so a large mixed-scent order is easier than a large single-scent one. For anything above roughly twenty-five units, write to us through the contact page before you order — availability by scent varies, and it is better to ask than to assume.
The gifts have to be handed out at a specific event. Is this still the right choice?
No. If the gift has to be physically in people’s hands on a particular day, buy something locally, from a shop you can walk into and carry out of. We publish no dispatch or delivery promise anywhere on this site, and a last-minute staff list is the worst possible place to rely on one. Use this page for the decision — identical within a tier, low-polarisation scent, nothing that needs sizing or a dietary check — and apply that decision wherever you end up buying.
