Why a studio is a harder brief than a bigger flat
Fragrance in a home is judged twice: once when you notice it and once when you cannot get away from it. In a flat with rooms those are different scents in different places, so a rich amber can be wonderful in a hallway precisely because you pass through. A studio collapses that. The scent you choose is the scent you sleep in, and the qualities that make a fragrance impressive on arrival — sweetness, spice, a big warm base — are the qualities that become insistent when you are lying still in the dark eight feet from the source. What survives overnight is almost always the same shape: clean at the top, soft woody floor underneath. White tea does this unusually well because it reads as air rather than as a substance, and cedar gives it enough body not to evaporate into nothing.
There is a second pressure that is peculiar to studios, and it is the kitchen. Your fragrance is not competing with cooking — nothing wins that — but it is being encountered next to it, several times a week, in the same air. Scents with gourmand, vanillic or heavily sweet facets blur into food smells rather than sitting apart from them, and you get an ambiguous flat that smells vaguely of dinner and vaguely of perfume. Tea, citrus-tea and green-woody structures stay legible as not food, which is why they hold up in a single-room home when richer compositions do not. That is a fit judgement, not a quality one.

Drops, placement and the evening schedule
Dose lower than you would in a room you do not sleep in. The general guidance for the Hotel Collection is three to six drops per tank; in a studio I would start every one of these at three. The white teas can take a fourth if the room reads flat after twenty minutes. 1 Hotels-inspired Forest Suite is happier at three than four, because vetiver has more staying power than its lightness suggests. And if you insist on running one of the richer three, drop to two — Shangri-La-inspired Tea Garden in particular is a different fragrance at two drops than at five, and the two-drop version is the one that works over a bed.
Placement changes how a scent reads, not just how strong it is. A diffuser on the floor delivers the base notes and loses the top, which is why a white tea on a carpet smells woody and dull while the same bottle on a shelf a metre up smells like the scent you bought. Stand it around chest height when seated, in the corner furthest from the hob, a foot of clear air around it, out of the path of a fan or split AC. On a Sukoon the remote lets you use the right corner rather than the reachable one.
Then the schedule, which is really a scent decision. Two hours in the evening on the 2H timer works better than continuous running, because your nose stops registering a constant background within a few days and the natural response — more drops — makes the flat overwhelming to everyone else. Do not run it while you cook: extractor, open window, diffuser afterwards, because layering fragrance over frying produces something worse than either. Rinse the tank when you switch scents, since in one air space there is nowhere to escape a muddled blend. Use filtered water where the supply is hard, and never put neat oil in an ultrasonic.

I compose these to be lived with rather than admired, but a studio still catches me out. The brief I write for a living room assumes you leave the room. A studio does not let anyone leave, and that changes which of my own scents I would put in it.
The honest hierarchy is: clean top, soft woody floor, nothing sweet and nothing sharp.
