Why the two floors need different kits, not the same kit twice

The ground floor of a duplex is a high-loss floor and always will be. It has the front door opening onto a street, the kitchen, the largest volume of air, the most traffic, and — the part people forget — the foot of the staircase, which behaves like the base of a chimney. Warm air rises through it continuously and carries fragrance upstairs. Whatever you release downstairs is being drawn off at a low, steady rate for as long as the house is warm. A ground floor needs to over-supply just to stay level. That is why the kit here is three machines rather than two, and why the drops are at the upper end.

The upper floor is the mirror image. It is a low-loss floor made of small rooms with doors that shut, and it begins every evening with a faint deposit of whatever has been running below — free scent it did not ask for and cannot refuse. Resist the symmetry instinct. Matching the downstairs count upstairs is the single most common way a duplex ends up over-scented.
The test: shut the door for an afternoon. A room that reads neutral by evening needs a machine; a room that reads faintly of downstairs does not.

The SOSA principle

Drops and schedule, per floor

Downstairs the dose is three to four drops per tank and the placement rule is separation. Two machines at opposite ends of an open living-dining produce an even room; two machines within a few feet of each other produce one loud patch and a lot of untouched floor. Keep both roughly a metre up — a console, a sideboard, a low shelf — and keep both away from the foot of the stairs and out of the throw of a ceiling fan or split AC. Moving air does not spread fragrance, it relocates it.

Upstairs the dose drops to two or three, and the placement rule reverses: go deep into the room, away from the door and the landing, because the doorway is where borrowed scent from downstairs is already arriving. A bedside table or a chest of drawers on the far wall is right. The reason for the lower dose is arithmetic rather than taste — the room is not starting from zero, so the same number of drops that reads as pleasant downstairs reads as too much in a smaller volume that already has something in it.

The schedule is where a duplex kit either works or does not. Start the ground-floor machines in the late afternoon on a two-hour timer, so the house is settled by the time anyone sits down and the stairwell has had time to carry a soft version of it upstairs. Start the bedroom machine roughly an hour before sleep and let the auto shut-off end it. Do not run all four together all evening; the 16-to-18-hour tank runtime is a convenience feature, not an instruction. Rinse tanks when you change fragrance, and use filtered water if your city runs hard.

People ask me for a number and what they actually want is a list. I understand the impulse — a number does not tell you which room, and the room is the whole question. So the list for a duplex is three machines downstairs, one upstairs, and a deliberate blank where the staircase is.

The blank is the part that gets argued with. It looks like an omission, and in a flat it would be. But a stairwell in a two-floor house is not a room, it is a route — air travels up it all day, and anything you release there is gone before it settles.
