Why a specified kit beats a machine count
Most home-scenting advice stops at the number, which is the least actionable part of the answer. Three machines placed badly, dosed heavily and left running all day will produce a flat that smells worse than one machine used properly — stronger, muddier and noticeably artificial. The reason is that a diffuser does not produce a smell, it produces a concentration, and concentration is a function of dose, run time, room volume and airflow, three of which you control for free. The hardware is the smallest variable in the whole system. This is why a specification is more useful than a count: it fixes the three free variables at sensible values so the machines you have bought behave the way the product page implied they would.
The second reason to specify rather than count is that a 3BHK is the first home where the machines have to agree with one another. In a 1BHK or a 2BHK the rooms are far enough apart, or few enough, that the scents never meet. Placement, drops and the running schedule
Height and distance first, because they cost nothing and change everything. Every machine in the kit stands roughly a metre off the floor with at least a foot of clear air around it — mist that meets a wall, a curtain or the back of a television condenses rather than disperses, and a floor-level machine spends its output on the skirting. Keep all three out of the direct path of a ceiling fan or a split AC. In the public zone, the single most valuable inch of movement is away from the passage mouth: a diffuser near a corridor opening loses a large share of its output into a space nobody occupies.
Doses are deliberately different by zone. Five to six drops of Hotel Collection per tank in the public zone, because the volume is large and the space is ventilated by the front door and the balcony. Three to four in the master, three in the second bedroom. The instinct is to match the bedroom to the living room because the living room smells right, but a bedroom is a smaller volume with a shut door, so the same dose lands considerably heavier — and it lands on you while you are lying still and not moving air around. If you wake up aware of the fragrance, take a drop out rather than moving the machine.
Then the schedule, which is what turns three purchases into one system. The public-zone machine goes on at about six in the evening on the 4H timer, so the flat is settled by the time anyone arrives and it has stopped by the time you go to bed.
