Almost everyone who asks for a clean-smelling closet scent already has a smell they are trying to get rid of, and they are usually planning to put the new one straight on top of the old one. That is the single most reliable way to make a cupboard smell worse. Fragrance does not cancel naphthalene or camphor — it stands next to them, and the pair is more unpleasant than either alone.
Quick answers — read this first
Do this first: empty it, air it for a day or two, throw out the mothballs, unbag the dry-cleaning.

Then the one to buy: the Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity — white tea, aloe, cedar. 15ml ₹299.

How much? Two drops on a Boond at ₹899, twenty minutes with the door open, then off.

Never: scent over camphor. Remove the source first.
The short answer
Short answer: The Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity (white tea · aloe · cedar) — but only after the closet has been aired and the source of the smell removed. Aloe reads cool and watery with no sugar in it, which is the closest thing in the collection to the smell of clean air rather than the smell of a cleaning product.
The order that matters: Air the cupboard with the doors open for a day or two. Remove what is producing the smell — mothballs, damp cardboard, unaired shoes, bagged dry-cleaning. Only then diffuse, at two drops.
The alternatives: Quiet Luxury (Ritz-Carlton-inspired) if you want clean with a brighter edge; Forest Suite (1 Hotels-inspired) if clean to you means dry and woody. Both ₹299 in 15ml.
Straight answer
What is the best clean-smelling fragrance for a closet or dressing area?
1. Before anything: air it and empty it. Open the doors, take everything out, and leave it for a day or two if you can. Most closet smells are not a fragrance problem at all — they are a ventilation problem, and airing alone fixes a surprising proportion of them at no cost.

2. Then remove the source, whatever it is. The usual suspects are naphthalene or camphor balls, damp cardboard and newspaper on the shelves, shoes put away unaired, and dry-cleaning still sealed in its plastic — the solvent smell needs to flash off, so unbag everything and hang it for a day.

3. Then the pick: Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity. White tea, aloe and soft cedar. It reads as cool, aired air rather than as a scented product, which is precisely the register a cupboard wants. 15ml ₹299.

4. The dose: two drops. A closet is a small unventilated volume, so concentration builds instead of clearing. Two drops on a Boond (₹899), twenty minutes with the door propped open, then off.

5. What not to do. Do not diffuse over camphor. Do not leave an ultrasonic misting in a sealed cupboard — it adds water, and damp in enclosed storage is how mildew starts on leather, silk and wool. And do not treat any fragrance as a substitute for cleaning: this scents a room, it does not treat one.

Made in India, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer — and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: air the closet first, remove whatever is making the smell — mothballs, damp, unaired shoes, bagged dry-cleaning — and only then diffuse the Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity at two drops on a Boond (₹899) for twenty minutes with the door open. Scent layered over camphor is worse than camphor on its own.

Why putting a scent over a closet smell makes it worse

The instinct to cover a bad smell is almost universal and almost always wrong, and closets are where it fails most visibly. Smell does not work like paint. A new fragrance in a cupboard does not sit on top of the old one and hide it — the two arrive at your nose together and are perceived as a single, muddled impression. With most background smells that produces something merely unattractive. With camphor and naphthalene it produces something genuinely unpleasant, because those materials are extremely volatile, extremely penetrating, and have a hard medicinal edge that nothing in a home fragrance is capable of softening. A white tea over camphor does not read as white tea. It reads as camphor with something floral-adjacent stuck to it, which is a worse experience than plain camphor, and it also wastes the fragrance.

It is worth naming the actual cast of characters, because closet smells are specific and each one has a different answer. Naphthalene and camphor come from mothballs and only leave when the balls do and the space is aired — often for longer than you expect, since the vapour saturates cloth and shelving. Damp is a structural smell, usually from an external wall, a floor-level shelf or cardboard boxes absorbing monsoon humidity, and it comes back unless the moisture does. Shoe leather is not really a leather smell at all but the smell of worn insoles in an unventilated space. Old dry-cleaning solvent is the sweetish chemical note on garments still sealed in their collection bags; it dissipates within a day of unbagging and hanging them in open air. The general staleness underneath all of it is simply air that has not moved. Four of those five are solved by removal and ventilation rather than by fragrance — which is why the clean scent in this article is the last step of a routine, not the whole of it.

The three clean routes, and who each is for

1
Westin-inspired · White Tea Serenity
Clean as in aired — and the one to buy
Westin-inspired White Tea SerenityWhite Tea SerenityFrom ₹299White tea · aloe · cedar. The distinction that matters in a cupboard is between clean-as-in-product and clean-as-in-air. Lemon, pine and the whole household-cleaner register belong to the first, and in a closet they land badly — a cupboard that smells of floor cleaner reads as a cupboard someone has been fighting with. Aloe belongs to the second: cool, watery, no sugar, no sharpness. White tea over it is papery and light, and the cedar at the back quietly agrees with the fact that the room is full of stored cloth. The result is a closet that smells of nothing in particular, which is the correct ambition.
Buy this if: the goal is a cupboard that smells aired rather than scented, and you want the lightest possible trace left on the clothes.
2
The Ritz-Carlton-inspired · Quiet Luxury
Clean with a brighter edge
White tea · bergamot · cedar. The same white-tea spine with bergamot instead of aloe, which lifts it and gives the room a groomed rather than a spa-like feel. Useful in a dressing area you also stand in to do your face and hair, where the aloe version can feel a touch too quiet. The one caveat is that bergamot is a citrus, and citrus is the family most likely to read as household cleaner if you over-dose it — so the discipline of two drops matters slightly more with this one than with the aloe.
Buy this if: the closet opens into a proper dressing area, and clean to you means bright rather than cool.
3
1 Hotels-inspired · Forest Suite
Clean as in dry — the cedar answer
Cedarwood · vetiver · green leaves. A third definition of clean, and the one that most closely matches what people are nostalgic for in a well-kept almirah — dry cedar rather than fresh laundry. It is the best of the three against residual mustiness, because dryness is the perceptual opposite of damp and cedar reads dry in a way tea does not. Sequence still applies: damp has to be fixed, never covered.
Buy this if: the cupboard is old, wooden or slightly musty, and you want dryness rather than freshness.

The clean scent matrix

Four of the seven can be argued for in a closet, and the differences are mostly about what kind of clean you mean. Read across — but only after the airing and removal steps, because none of these columns helps if the mothballs are still in the drawer.

The scent, and the machine sized for a closet
The SOSA principle
Fragrance is the last ten per cent of this problem. Ventilation and removal are the other ninety, and no bottle sold anywhere will reverse that ratio.
Which is also the cheapest advice on this page — airing a cupboard costs nothing at all.

The routine, in the order that works

Step one, air it. Open the doors and, if you can, take the contents out for a day. Most closet smells are stagnation rather than contamination, and moving air through the space does more in twenty-four hours than any fragrance will do in a month. Step two, remove the source. Mothballs go in the bin and the shelves get wiped; damp cardboard and old newspaper liners come out; shoes come out and get aired separately; dry-cleaning comes out of its plastic and hangs in open air for a day so the solvent can flash off. Step three, and only now, scent it. Two drops of white tea into a closet that has already been aired smells like a cupboard in good order. The same two drops into a closet that still contains camphor smells like a mistake.

The dose is two drops, and the general Hotel Collection guidance of three to six does not apply here. A closet is the smallest volume in the house, it is usually windowless and it is designed to hold still air, so what happens is accumulation rather than dispersal. Clean scents make this worse than woods do, because they are quiet at the top — you stand there with the tank open thinking nothing is happening, add two more drops, and by the third day the cupboard smells of product rather than of air. Judge it from the doorway ten minutes after switching off.

And the caution that matters most in this particular article. An ultrasonic diffuser adds water vapour to the air along with the fragrance. If part of what you are fighting is damp — and in a ground-floor flat during an Indian monsoon it usually is — then running a mist machine in a closed cupboard is working directly against yourself. Moisture plus enclosed storage plus wool, silk and leather is how mildew starts, and mildew is a far worse smell than anything on the list above. Run it in short bursts with the door propped open, twenty minutes at a time, and switch it off before you close up. In a humid month keep it clear of leather entirely. Rinse the tank between scents, use filtered water in hard-water cities, and never put raw essential oils into an ultrasonic — too viscous to atomise, and they will foul the plate.

You cannot perfume your way out of a mothball. You can only open the door and take it away.

Which diffuser belongs in a closet

Small machine, short run, door open. The large-tank option is the wrong instinct here — capacity is only useful if running for hours is safe, and in an enclosed cupboard full of natural fibres it is not.

Honest notes before you buy: these are ultrasonic, water-based fragrances — they add a little humidity to the room, which is welcome in a dry or heavily air-conditioned space and less so during a coastal monsoon. They are for SOSA ultrasonic diffusers (Boond, Sukoon, Megh) and are not for reed diffusers or for waterless nebulising machines like the Safar or Vaayu, which run neat oil. Use filtered water in hard-water areas, rinse the tank between scents, and keep the fragrance out of reach of children and pets — it is composed to IFRA standards for home diffusion, not for skin or ingestion. A note from Sonal

The naphthalene cupboard is a shared Indian memory and I do not think it gets discussed honestly. Mothballs were used because they worked at a job that mattered, and the smell was accepted as the price. What has changed is that the price is no longer invisible — that smell now transfers to a shirt and announces itself in an office in a way it never used to in a house full of the same smell.

When people write to me about a closet, the fragrance question is nearly always the wrong question. I ask what is actually in there, and the answer is usually camphor, or a cardboard box on the bottom shelf that has been quietly absorbing monsoon air for three years, or six pairs of shoes that have never been aired. Once those are dealt with, a great many people find they do not need a fragrance at all — they needed the cupboard opened.

If you still want one after that, and most people do, buy the 15ml at ₹299 rather than the 100ml. Run two drops for a week and see whether the room holds. This is a fragrance and nothing else — it does not clean, treat or protect anything in the cupboard. A portion of what you spend funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best clean-smelling fragrance for a closet or dressing area?
The Westin-inspired White Tea Serenity — white tea, aloe and soft cedar. Aloe reads cool and watery rather than sharp, so the cupboard smells aired rather than cleaned, which is the right register for a room full of stored cloth. But air the closet and remove the source of the smell first: two drops on a Boond at ₹899 only works on a cupboard that is already in good order.
How do I get rid of a mothball or camphor smell in my wardrobe?
Remove the mothballs, wipe the shelves, and air the space with the doors open for a day or two — longer if the smell is old, because naphthalene vapour saturates cloth and shelving. Wash or air the affected garments. Only then think about fragrance. Diffusing a scent over camphor does not mask it; the two are perceived together and the combination is worse than the camphor on its own.
What smells am I actually fighting in a closet?
Usually five: naphthalene or camphor from mothballs, damp from an external wall or cardboard on a low shelf, worn shoe leather in an unventilated space, the sweetish solvent note on dry-cleaning still sealed in plastic, and plain staleness from air that has not moved. Four of the five are fixed by removal and ventilation, not by scent.
How many drops should I use in a closet?
Two. The general Hotel Collection guidance is three to six drops, but a closet is the smallest and least ventilated space you will scent, so concentration builds rather than clearing. Clean scents are quiet at the top, which tempts people into over-dosing — judge the result from the doorway ten minutes after switching off.
Is a diffuser a good idea in a damp cupboard?
Only with care, and never continuously. An ultrasonic adds water vapour along with the fragrance, so in a cupboard that is already damp you would be adding to the problem — and moisture in enclosed storage full of wool, silk and leather is how mildew starts. Fix the damp first, then run the diffuser in twenty-minute bursts with the door propped open and switch it off before closing up.
