Why avoid an obviously expensive gift at a shower? Because it exposes guests who gave carefully within a budget and obliges the recipient to respond to something she cannot repay in kind.
Should I pool with other guests instead? Often the best answer. Pooling makes the spend collective and legible in a comfortable way, and it buys one lasting object rather than three overlapping ones.
At a shower, price legibility is the problem
Most advice about spending more at a shower treats the question as whether you can afford it. The more useful question is what happens in the room when the parcel is opened, because a gift table is a social setting with its own arithmetic and it is easy to break by accident. Here is that arithmetic. A typical shower table holds fifteen to thirty parcels, and most of them cost between four hundred and eight hundred rupees. That is not stinginess, it is simply where the category sits when twenty people each buy one thing. Into that, a two thousand rupee gift is about three times the median, which is enough to be noticed - and noticing is where the trouble starts. If the price is visible, three things happen at once. The other guests, several of whom chose carefully within a real budget, are suddenly standing next to a much larger box. The recipient is obliged in a way she cannot repay in kind, and she will think about that rather than about the gift. And the attention in the room moves from her to you, at an event that is nominally about her, which is the opposite of what generosity is supposed to do. None of that is an argument for spending less. It is an argument for spending on things whose price is not legible, which is a property some gifts have and others do not. A basket of items is legible - anybody can count the things in it. A large branded box is legible. A single well-made object is not, and that is the whole trick of this band: substance without a number attached. There are three good shapes at this budget. The first is duration. A 130ml reed diffuser from one thousand two hundred and forty-nine rupees looks like a reed diffuser, which is a perfectly ordinary and familiar object, and does not read as expensive at all - while quietly running for months with no action from anybody. The standard sizes are seven hundred and forty-nine to eight hundred and forty-nine rupees: Morning Freshness seven hundred and forty-nine, Garden Bloom and Evening Calm seven hundred and ninety-nine, Mountain Breeze and Fresh Brew eight hundred and forty-nine, each using its own alcohol-free reed oil drawn up rattan by capillary action. Within two thousand you could give a standard diffuser alongside a candle at three hundred and seventy-nine or a car perfume at four hundred and forty-nine, though one object usually reads better than two. It belongs at an entrance or in a living room, which are the rooms they will be receiving visitors in for months. Not a nursery: SOSA makes no products for babies or children, and nothing in this range is intended for a nursery, a cot, a pram or a baby's belongings. The second shape is a gift that divides. The Attar Trio at one thousand and fifty-five rupees is three alcohol-free 12ml attars in one box. It opens beautifully in a room - three bottles is visibly a proper gift without being a big one - and it hands her the choice rather than your verdict, which matters at a shower because she is pregnant by definition and a great many people report that their reaction to particular smells shifts during those months. That is an observation about comfort and preference rather than anything medical, and nothing on this page is health or safety advice about any product. Adaa is bergamot, green cardamom, jasmine sambac and white musk; Ameeri is Taif rose with Indian sandalwood; Mastani is night jasmine and Damask rose; Nawaab is a white oud composition with Mysore sandalwood and Kashmir saffron rather than a dehn al oud distillate. It also divides between the two parents, which quietly includes the father - who at a baby shower receives, as a rule, nothing at all. The third shape is a complete system, and the word complete is doing serious work. The Boond ultrasonic diffuser at eight hundred and ninety-nine rupees is a three hundred millilitre USB machine, and it must be given with the water-based Hotel Collection concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine rupees, three to six drops per tank - one thousand one hundred and ninety-eight rupees complete, with room left for a second concentrate. The full-size Sukoon at one thousand eight hundred and ninety-nine plus concentrate at two hundred and ninety-nine comes to two thousand one hundred and ninety-eight, just over this band. Never give the machine alone: a device with nothing to run in it is a shopping instruction in good packaging, handed to two people whose list is already longer than their day. The three systems do not interchange - reed diffusers use reed oil and rattan capillary action, ultrasonic machines take the water-based concentrate, the waterless nebuliser runs undiluted oil - and reed oil must never go into a machine. The Hotel Collection is SOSA's own interpretation of seven hotel-style registers, and SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. There is a fourth option that solves the legibility problem completely, and if you can manage it, it is the best one: pool. Two or three guests going in together turns two thousand rupees into an openly collective gift, which nobody in the room reads as showing off, and which buys one lasting object instead of three overlapping ones. It is also easier to do at a shower than at any other event, because the guests are usually in a group chat already. If you pool, the 130ml reed diffuser from one thousand two hundred and forty-nine rupees or a diffuser with a refill - refills are two thousand three hundred and ninety-nine for three hundred millilitres - is the obvious target. Two last rules for a shower specifically. Nothing that needs explaining while twenty people wait, because a gift table moves at about ninety seconds a parcel. And nothing that needs assembling, positioning or deciding about, since those costs are paid later by two people who have none of the required resources.

Versailles
When somebody has a baby, the gifts arrive in a wave and almost every one of them is for the baby. Clothes the child outgrows in six weeks, toys for an age they have not reached, blankets in a cupboard that already has nine. It is all kind and it is all well meant. But two adults have just gone through something enormous, and by the end of the first month neither of them has received a single thing addressed to them.
That is the whole reason this section exists. We do not make anything for babies, and nothing we sell is meant for a nursery or for a child's things - we make fragrance for adults. What we can do is give somebody an answer when they say: everybody is buying for the baby, what do I give her, or him, or the two of them. Usually the answer is something small, consumable and completely undemanding, because a new parent has no free hands, no spare surface and no appetite for anything that needs setting up.
One honest thing. If the person you are buying for is pregnant, be careful with personal fragrance. A great many people find that what they want to be near changes during those months, and a bottle somebody cannot go near is a worse gift than nothing at all - so either choose something for their home or their car, or let them pick it themselves later. Message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 and tell us who the adult is and what you know about them, and we will tell you honestly if we think fragrance is the wrong call. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.
