Most couples now publish a list, or the modern version of one, and the list is there for a good reason: it stops eleven people buying the same serving dish. Buying off it is a small act of confidence, and it is only defensible on one ground. Not that you have better taste than the list. That you are covering something the list structurally cannot.
Quick answers — read this first
Is it rude to buy a wedding gift that is not on the list? Not if it covers something the list cannot. A wedding gift registry is almost always a list of home objects, because that is what the format is good at. A couple whose life runs through airports has a whole second category nobody is buying for, and a cordless diffuser at ₹3,999 sits squarely in it.

What is a good off-list wedding gift for a couple who travel? Something portable that both of them use at once. SOSA Safar is 6.9 cm, waterless, cordless and rechargeable, with a named scent trio in the box - it works in a car, on a desk and on a hotel nightstand, none of which a home registry covers.

How much do you spend on a wedding gift in India? It varies enormously with how close you are, but ₹2,500 to ₹5,000 is a common band for a friend or a colleague. Below that, a ₹1,055 attar trio set or a ₹379 roll-on is a straightforward, unembarrassing answer.
The short answer
Short answer: Going off the list is only defensible when the gift does something the list cannot, and a home registry structurally cannot cover the trips.
The pick: SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - waterless, cordless, 6.9 cm, 10 hours a charge, scent trio included.
Honest note: it scents a space and does not humidify it, and it travels in hand baggage because of the battery.
Gifts for people who travel - at a glanceThey own the luggage. They do not own the room.Safar ₹3,999 - cordless, waterless, 6.9 cm, 10 hrs a chargeCar, handbag, work desk, hotel nightstandScent trio included · auto-off timer
A frequent traveller owns every object a suitcase can hold. What they do not own is a room that smells like theirs. SOSA Safar is a waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion diffuser - 6.9 cm, Type-C, up to 10 hours a charge, with a 1/2/3-hour auto-off timer - for the car, the desk, the cabin bag and the hotel nightstand. Rs 3,999 with a scent trio included.
Straight answer
When is it right to ignore the wedding list?
A wedding gift registry is a list of objects for a house. That is not a criticism, it is what the format does well - it coordinates a hundred people so the couple end up with one dinner service rather than four. If you buy off it, you are opting out of that coordination, and the only honest justification is that you are covering a category the list does not reach.

For a couple who travel, that category is large and completely unserved. Nothing on a home list follows them out of the door. Everything on it assumes they are standing in their kitchen.

What fills it: SOSA Safar at ₹3,999. A waterless, cordless, rechargeable cold-diffusion diffuser, 6.9 cm, Type-C charged, 20ml bottle, three speeds, a 1, 2 or 3-hour auto-off timer, up to 10 hours continuous or 30 hours intermittent per charge. Sold for a car, a handbag, a work desk, a bedside table and a hotel room, which is a list of places no registry item goes. The scent trio is in the box, so it is a finished gift rather than the start of one. The ₹4,499 version is the same device with the hotel-inspired trio.

Why it does not collide with the list. It is not a duplicate of anything a couple registers for, because the thing it does happens in rooms they do not own. That is the whole argument, and it is worth saying in the card, because an off-list gift benefits from an explanation of itself.

Where the list is genuinely the better answer. If the couple do not travel much, buy from the list and enjoy the evening. If you want to stay in this range without a device, a 12ML attar trio at ₹3,189 or a 130ML reed duo at ₹2,498 are both home objects, and reed diffusers run on their own alcohol-free reed oil rather than on Safar's.

Two notes worth passing on. It is aroma only - a space scenter, not a source of moisture in the air. And because it carries a rechargeable battery it goes in hand baggage rather than checked luggage, with policy varying by airline. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: buy off the list only where the list cannot reach, and a home registry cannot reach a hotel room.
For someone who travels, the starting point is SOSA Safar at ₹3,999 - waterless, cordless, 6.9 cm, up to 10 hours a charge, with a scent trio in the box. It works in the car, on a desk and on a hotel nightstand. If ₹3,999 is more than the occasion needs, a 3ML attar at ₹379 travels just as well.
₹3,999

Going off the list, and when that is defensible

Three questions decide whether an off-list wedding gift reads as thoughtful or as a small act of vandalism.

1
Coordination
The list exists to stop duplication, so do not create any
The failure mode a registry prevents is eleven identical objects. If you step outside it, the burden is on you to be certain nobody else is buying the same thing, which in practice means choosing something unusual enough that duplication is close to impossible. A cordless travel diffuser meets that test by simply not being a category most guests shop in. It also avoids the second duplication risk, which is buying a better version of something the couple already own - travel objects like this are rarely owned twice.
Tip: An off-list gift has to be unusual, or you have reintroduced the problem the list solved.
2
Scope
A registry covers a house, and a travelling couple are not in it
Look at any wedding list and the assumption behind it is a couple standing still. Kitchen, table, bedroom, bathroom. For two people who spend a fortnight a month somewhere else, that is a description of the smaller half of their life. The rooms they spend most of their nights in are not on the list and never will be. That is the gap, and pointing at it is the reason an off-list choice reads as considered rather than as contrary.
3
Finished object
An off-list gift has to work without anything else being bought
A registry item arrives complete because somebody chose the whole thing. Step outside and you have to supply that completeness yourself. A device that needs an oil bought separately is an unfinished present, and it puts the couple in the position of spending their own money to make your gift function. Here the named scent trio is included at ₹3,999, so the box is the gift. Worth checking on anything device-shaped before you commit to buying off the list.
Tip: If the recipient has to complete it, it is not a finished gift.
The SOSA principle
Buying off the list is not a claim to better taste. It is a claim that the list has a blind spot, and you have to be right about that.
For a couple who travel, the blind spot is obvious and enormous: every room they stay in that is not their own.

Choosing between the list and the trip

Two decisions, in order: are they actually travellers, and are you buying for the house or for the trips.

The SOSA gift edit
List or off-list, and what each one buys
Option Who it suits, and what it costs
They travel often, and you want the trips covered SOSA Safar at ₹3,999. Cordless, waterless, 6.9 cm, scent trio included, nothing on the list competes with it.
They travel often, but you want to spend less The attar trio set at ₹1,055 in 3ML, or a single roll-on at ₹379. Small, portable, no device.
They are homebodies with a new flat Buy from the list, or a 130ML reed diffuser at ₹1,349 - the home answer, no charging, no switch.
You want something for the home at this level A 130ML reed duo at ₹2,498, or Sukoon at ₹1,899 if they want mist in the air as well as scent.

If you would rather approach this as a honeymoon present than as a wedding present, Honeymoon gift is the same object with a different occasion around it. If the wedding itself is somewhere you have to fly to, Destination wedding covers what changes when you are carrying the gift there yourself. The Safar page carries the full specification.

Not sure what will land right?
Send us how they travel - road or air, hotels or one new home - what they already own, and your budget. If a product is the wrong shape for the gift, we will say so.

A wedding list is very good at coordinating a house. It has never once coordinated a hotel room.

The SOSA gift edit

Every SOSA gift is alcohol-free, long-lasting and ready to hand over, handmade in small batches in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the edit by format, which is what decides how a gift reads.

The SOSA gift edit for a friend
Five answers by how the person actually travels - from a ₹379 attar to the ₹3,999 Safar
Gift Best for What it says, and what it costs From
SOSA Safar Anyone who travels · the default Waterless, cordless, rechargeable. 6.9 cm, 10 hrs a charge, auto-off timer. Car, bag, desk, hotel room. Scent trio included ₹3,999
SOSA Safar · hotel-inspired trio Someone who loves good hotels The same device with the hotel-inspired scent trio instead of the SOSA trio ₹4,499
Attar roll-on 3ML A smaller travel gift Alcohol-free oil, 3ML, goes anywhere - the compact gift when ₹3,999 is too much ₹379
Solid perfume tin 15g Someone who packs light Solid balm in a metal tin - cannot spill, not a liquid, survives a shared shelf ₹500
Reed diffuser 50ML Someone who is finally home For the person who has stopped travelling, or the flat they come back to ₹749

Four honest notes. SOSA Safar is aroma only - it scents a space and does not humidify it, so if someone wants moisture in dry air they want Boond or Sukoon instead. It has a built-in rechargeable battery, so it travels in hand baggage rather than checked luggage, and airline policies on devices with batteries vary - worth a check before a long trip. Reed diffusers use their own alcohol-free reed oil; the Hotel Collection is a separate water-based fragrance for ultrasonic mist diffusers, and the two are not interchangeable. The hotel-inspired scents are SOSA's own interpretations - SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.

A note from Sonal

The hardest person to buy for is not someone with expensive taste. It is someone who travels constantly, because they have already solved every problem a gift usually solves. They own the luggage, the organisers, the adaptors, the neck pillow and the noise-cancelling headphones, and they bought better versions than you were going to.

What they do not own is the room. Somebody who spends a hundred nights a year in hotels spends those nights in rooms that smell of someone else's cleaning product - pleasant enough, anonymous, and never theirs. That is the one gap a suitcase cannot fill, and it is the reason we made Safar the way we did: waterless because water spills in a bag, cordless because hotel sockets are never where you need them, and small enough at 6.9 cm to stop being a decision about packing space.

Two things I will say plainly. It is aroma only - it scents a room, it does not add moisture to the air, and anyone who wants a humidifier should buy a humidifier. And it has an auto-off timer for a reason: a hotel room is borrowed space, and nothing should be left running in it while nobody is there. Use the timer, keep it on the low setting, and the room smells like theirs for the evening and like the hotel's again by checkout. A portion of every order supports girl-child education.

Frequently asked questions

Is it acceptable to buy a wedding gift that is not on the list?
It is, as long as the gift covers something the list cannot. A list is built to stop duplication of home objects, so stepping outside it is only fair if you are choosing something nobody else will buy and the couple would not register for. For two people who travel, a portable diffuser at ₹3,999 is exactly that.
Is a scent diffuser a good wedding gift?
For a couple who travel, yes, because it is one object both of them use at the same time rather than two of something. SOSA Safar is waterless, cordless and 6.9 cm, with a named scent trio in the box. For a couple who rarely leave home, a reed diffuser at ₹1,349 is the more sensible version of the same idea.
Will they have to buy fragrance oil separately?
No. The ₹3,999 price includes a named scent trio, so the box is a complete gift. The ₹4,499 version is the same device with the hotel-inspired trio instead. Refills only come up months later, once they have chosen a favourite.
What if other guests buy the same thing?
Very unlikely, which is part of the argument for it. Wedding guests cluster around the same few categories, and a cordless travel diffuser is not one of them. That said, if you know the couple already own one, go back to the list - two of anything is the one outcome a list exists to prevent.
Is it safe for them to use in a hotel room?
Yes, with the same courtesies that apply to any borrowed room. Low setting, use the 1, 2 or 3-hour auto-off timer, and nothing running while the room is empty, since the air is shared with housekeeping and the next guest. Some properties have their own rules about what guests may run, which is worth a quick check at the desk.
