Start with the part nobody selling you a diffuser will say out loud: no one who sees the final photographs or the walkthrough video can smell anything at all. A shoot day produces images, and images do not carry air. So if the question is whether scenting the flat improves the listing photography, the answer is no, and we would rather say that than take the order. There is still a real conversation here, because a shoot day is genuinely one of the hardest days a property's air ever has, and because shoot days have a habit of turning into viewing days by six in the evening.
Quick answers — read this first
Does scenting a property help the listing photos or video? No. Photographs and video carry light, colour, geometry and sound, and nothing else. A flat that has been scented and a flat that has not produce identical images. Anyone who tells you the fragrance shows up in the pictures is selling you something. What legitimately improves listing imagery is the same work that improves a viewing - clean, aired, decluttered, curtains open, lights consistent, surfaces wiped - and none of that is fragrance. Scent a shoot day for the people who are physically in the flat, which is a defensible reason on its own, or because the shoot day is also going to be a viewing day, which is the case where it genuinely matters.

What does a six-hour shoot actually do to a property's air? More than most brokers expect. Continuous lighting raises the room temperature over several hours, and the air conditioning usually goes off during video takes because of the noise, so a closed flat gets warm and still. Doors get propped open for cables and the front door is often open for gear runs, so the connected volume you would carefully arrange for a viewing does not exist. Moving furniture raises dust. A stylist's steamer puts real moisture into the room. Props and fresh flowers arrive. And at some point six people eat lunch in the flat, which is the single largest smell event of the day. By wrap, the property smells of a working day rather than of a home.

Should the diffuser be running during the shoot? Only if you want it for the crew, and never where it can be seen or heard. It is a physical object that will appear in a wide shot and become something a retoucher has to remove, and any device near a microphone is a variable an audio-conscious videographer should not have to argue about. The practical routine is to run it in the rooms not currently being shot and move it ahead of the crew, or simply switch it off for the shooting hours and run it properly after wrap. If the day ends with a buyer, an owner walkthrough or a developer sign-off, the post-wrap hour is where the machine earns its place.
The short answer
Short answer: Scenting a property does nothing for the photographs or the video - images carry no smell, and a scented flat and an unscented one produce identical files. A shoot day is still hard on a flat's air: continuous lighting heats a closed room, the air conditioning goes off during takes, doors are propped for cables, furniture moves and raises dust, a stylist's steamer adds moisture, and lunch is eaten indoors. Scenting the shoot itself benefits the crew and the owner, not the output. It matters when the shoot day doubles as a viewing or an owner walkthrough: ventilate hard for twenty to thirty minutes after lights off, close up, then run the machine for an hour before anyone arrives. Every customer-facing space hosts two audiences at once: the customer who forms an opinion in a single visit, and the staff who breathe that air for eight hours. Commercial scenting serves both with one move - a single refined fragrance, held evenly from the entrance to the far end of the floor, running on a schedule nobody has to remember. Customers experience it as "this brand has itself together"; the team gets premises that smell composed from opening to close.
Straight answer
There is a photo and video shoot at my listing on Saturday. Should I scent it, and when?
Answer in two halves, because the honest one comes first. 1. Not for the images. Nothing you put in the air appears in a photograph or a video file. If the shoot is only a shoot, spend the money and the morning on what the camera does see: clean glass, wiped skirting, curtains fully open, matching lamp bulbs, cables hidden, bins out of frame, and a flat that has been aired since dawn. 2. For the people, if you like. Six bodies work in that flat for six or eight hours and the owner often walks in at the end. Running a quiet register during the day is a hospitality decision, and a legitimate one - just not a photographic one. 3. Where it genuinely counts: shoot day as viewing day. If a buyer, an owner or a developer's team is coming after wrap, run this sequence. Lights off and the shoot broken down. Open everything for twenty to thirty minutes to dump the accumulated heat, the lunch and the dust - windows, balcony doors, internal doors, and the kitchen last. Wipe down and take the waste out of the property rather than into the kitchen bin. Then close up, start a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, waterless, app and timer) at its normal low setting, and give it sixty to seventy-five minutes with the internal doors open before anyone arrives. 4. Two practical constraints. The Vaayu is mains powered at DC 12V and about 5W, so it needs a working socket - and on a shoot day every socket in the flat is holding a light or a charger, so bring an extension and claim one early. And it is waterless: no water tank, no mist, no wet residue on marble, glass or timber, which is the format you want in a room full of lenses, mirrors and a stylist's steamer already adding moisture. Registers from ₹299; reeds from ₹749 for a room you cannot get power to. Ventilate and clean first; fragrance never fixes a smell and never covers a defect. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531 with the shoot schedule. Made in India; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
One line: the camera cannot smell, so scent the shoot for the crew and the owner, not for the images - and run the machine properly only if the day ends with a buyer. Ventilate hard after wrap, then sixty minutes at a low setting. Vaayu ₹11,999, waterless, registers from ₹299. WhatsApp +91 96192 18531.
The commercial standard most businesses choose: the SOSA Vaayu - waterless cold-air scenting to ~1000m³, Bluetooth app and timer, one signature on schedule - at ₹11,999. What a shoot day does to a flat's air

Three parts: what six hours of lights, cables and lunch physically do to a closed flat, the honest limit of what fragrance contributes to a shoot, and the one sequence that makes it worth setting up at all.

Why this works
Shoot day, in the order the air actually needs it
1Nothing you add to the air appears in a photograph or a video file. Start there2Air conditioning off for takes plus continuous lights equals a warm, still flat3After wrap: twenty to thirty minutes of full ventilation before anything else4Only then, if a buyer is coming, sixty minutes on a low setting with doors open
The commercial standard: the SOSA Vaayu at ₹11,999 - waterless, app-scheduled, ~1000m³ coverage. Single rooms start on reeds from ₹749.
1
The day
Six hours of shooting is the hardest day a listing's air ever has
Run through a real schedule rather than an imagined one. The crew arrives at nine: a photographer, an assistant, usually a stylist, often a videographer, sometimes a drone operator, plus you and frequently the owner. That is six to eight people in a flat designed for four, and the front door stands open for twenty minutes while gear comes up in the lift. Lights go up next, and although modern LED panels run cooler than the tungsten they replaced, several hundred watts of continuous light in a closed room for six hours does raise the temperature, and warm air moves and holds fragrance differently from cool air - a setting that read as barely there at twenty-four degrees reads as present at thirty-one. Then the video begins, and the air conditioning goes off, because a compressor and a blower are audible on every take and no videographer will accept them under a voiceover. Now the flat is warm, closed and still. Meanwhile the stylist is steaming curtains and bed linen, which puts genuine moisture into that closed air; furniture is being pushed around, which lifts months of settled dust off skirtings and behind sofas; fresh flowers and props arrive with their own smell; and internal doors are propped open with sandbags for cable runs, so the neat connected volume you would arrange for a viewing does not exist for a single hour of the day. At half past one, lunch arrives, and because nobody wants to break the set-up, it is eaten in the flat. By four in the afternoon the property smells of a warm working day, and that is normal rather than a failure.
Tip: lights on, air conditioning off, doors propped, lunch indoors - four things that make a shoot day the least controlled air in your calendar.
2
The limit
The camera cannot smell, and neither can the listing page
It is worth being flat about this because the temptation to blur it is commercial. A photograph is light recorded on a sensor. A walkthrough video is light and sound. Neither format has ever carried a smell, and no processing step adds one. A flat that ran a Vaayu all morning and the identical flat that ran nothing produce indistinguishable files, and if anybody claims the scenting shows in the images, what they are actually describing is the tidying, airing and cleaning that happened alongside it. So who is the fragrance for on a pure shoot day? Three people, all of whom are real. The crew, who are working a long physical day in a closed flat and who notice a pleasant room the way anyone does. The owner, who often arrives at wrap to see what has been done to their home and whose impression of your professionalism is formed in that ten minutes. And you, because you will be back in that flat tomorrow. Those are hospitality reasons, they are perfectly respectable, and they are not photography reasons. The corollary is that on a shoot day the machine has no claim on any resource the camera needs: not a socket the key light wants, not a position in a frame, not a spot near a microphone. Run it in the rooms not being shot, move it ahead of the crew, or switch it off for the shooting hours entirely. A shoot day is one of the few occasions in this bank where the correct answer is often to leave the machine in the bag.
3
The overlap
When the shoot day becomes a viewing day at six in the evening
This is the situation the page exists for, and it is common. The shoot finishes at five, and a buyer who could only do a weekday evening is coming at seven; or the owner is arriving to approve the images; or a developer's marketing team wants a walkthrough while the flat is still styled. That is a real appointment in a flat that has just had the hardest day of its month, and the sequence matters more than the equipment. Break the set down and get the gear out of the property first, because a viewing with three light stands in the corridor is not a viewing. Then ventilate hard - twenty to thirty minutes with every window, balcony door and internal door open, which dumps the accumulated heat, the still air and the lunch in one go. Take the food waste out of the building rather than into the kitchen bin, wipe the kitchen and any surface the crew ate from, and empty the steamer. Then close up, start the machine at its ordinary low setting, and give it sixty to seventy-five minutes with the internal doors open so the flat is evenly and quietly scented rather than actively scenting as the buyer walks in - the cold start at the door being the classic mistake, covered in its own page. Two cautions specific to this day. The flat is warmer than usual, so if anything go a notch below your normal setting rather than at it. And the styling props are still in place, which is fine for an owner walkthrough and worth a plain sentence to a buyer: these are shoot props, the flat is sold unfurnished. Never let a styled flat imply an inclusion it does not have.
Tip: break down, ventilate hard, then scent - and if the flat is warm from six hours of lights, run a notch lower than normal.
The SOSA principle
Scenting a shoot is for the crew, the owner and you. It is not for the photographs, because photographs do not carry air - and pretending otherwise would cost you a morning and buy nothing.
The one time it genuinely earns its keep is when the shoot day ends with a buyer, an owner or a sign-off walkthrough. Then it is a viewing, and the viewing rules apply.

The timing spine is why cold-starting at the door goes wrong and the ninety minutes before a buyer arrives. Waterless format is argued in full in the empty-property page. The SOSA commercial edit

Whatever your business sells, the system logic is the same: one signature, sized to the space, scheduled so it never depends on anyone's memory. A single small room or a consultation corner can sit happily on reeds with no power at all; a customer-facing floor wants the Vaayu; a venue or a flagship wants HVAC. Every SOSA system is supported from India, and the Hotel Collection blends - SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations - run across the powered ones. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Here is the full commercial range.

Honest notes for business owners: scenting compounds a well-run premises and rescues nothing. Ventilation, air-conditioning and cleaning come first, and fragrance never substitutes for hygiene or air quality - if the air is stale, damp or smoky, fix that at the source before any scent goes in. The people most exposed to the fragrance are not your customers but your STAFF, who work eight-hour shifts in it, which is why whisper calibration and locked settings are standard on every SOSA commercial install, and any staff sensitivity report should be treated as a recalibration signal rather than a complaint. Healthcare and wellness spaces need extra restraint: keep scenting to reception and circulation areas, never treatment rooms, and the practitioner's judgement overrides anything in this guide. The Hotel Collection scents are SOSA's own hotel-inspired interpretations; SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house, not affiliated with or endorsed by any hotel brand. Ultrasonic systems use the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance; the Vaayu and HVAC systems run waterless nebulising oil - the formats are not interchangeable. WhatsApp consult: +91 96192 18531. ISIPCA
Versailles
A note from Sonal

I have walked into jewellery showrooms lit like museums, bridal boutiques with hand-embroidered walls, furniture floors styled down to the last cushion, clinics with better art than most galleries - and in almost every one of them, the air was an afterthought. Floor polish, packaging cartons, the phenyl from the morning mopping, the workshop or the loading bay drifting forward. The one thing every customer takes in before they see anything is the thing most businesses leave to chance.

I trained at ISIPCA in Versailles, where the world's scent-marketing perfumers learn the craft, and what I build for Indian businesses is the same architecture the global hospitality brands use, whatever you sell: one signature, sized to the space, run on a schedule - so the scent is as reliable as your lighting. A consultation corner may only need reeds; a full floor needs the Vaayu; a venue needs the HVAC systems. If you want it applied to your specific premises, message us on WhatsApp at +91 96192 18531 with the type of space and its approximate size - I read those descriptions myself.

Everything is made or assembled for Indian conditions, supported from Pune - and a part of every order funds girl-child education through Nanhi Kali. Your brand gets a memory; a girl gets a classroom. That equation has always felt right to me.

Frequently asked questions

The stylist wants to use a room spray before each set. Is that a problem?
It is, for three reasons that have nothing to do with photography. Aerosol sprays spike and vanish, so the flat is strongly scented for ten minutes and unscented for the next two hours, and if the day ends with a viewing you have no idea what level you are at. They vary by whoever sprayed and how enthusiastic they were feeling. And a fine aerosol released repeatedly in a closed room with lenses, mirrors, polished stone and styled fabric is a settling and spotting risk that a photographer will notice before you do. If the room needs to smell of something for the crew's benefit, one machine at a fixed low setting or a reed diffuser in an adjacent room does it evenly and predictably. Retire the sprays for the day and tell the stylist why - most will agree the moment lens spotting is mentioned.
Can I run an ultrasonic diffuser during a shoot instead of a waterless machine?
You can, but it is the wrong format for this specific day and it is worth knowing why. An ultrasonic works by putting a water-based fragrance into the air as a fine mist, which means it adds moisture to a room. On a shoot day that room is already closed, warm, and being steamed by a stylist working on curtains and bedding, and it contains camera bodies, lenses, mirrors, glass, polished marble and often a timber floor. Adding more airborne moisture in that environment is the one thing nobody in the room wants. The Vaayu at Rs 11,999 is waterless cold-air nebulising, so there is no tank, no mist and no wet residue on surfaces. If you already own a Sukoon at Rs 1,899 or a Megh at Rs 3,499, use them on ordinary viewing days and leave them at home for the shoot.
The video has a voiceover. Will the machine be audible?
Treat this as the videographer's call rather than yours, and make it easy for them by simply switching it off during takes. That is not a criticism of any machine; it is how sound recording works. A directional microphone in a hard-surfaced empty flat picks up an astonishing amount - the lift motor, the corridor door, a refrigerator compressor two rooms away, traffic through a closed window - and an audio engineer who has to isolate a voiceover does not want one more variable in the room. Run the machine between set-ups, in rooms that are not being recorded, or before the crew arrives and after they wrap. The one thing you should never do is argue about whether it is quiet enough while someone is trying to record.
Should the flat be styled and scented the same way for the shoot as for viewings?
Styled, no; scented, yes if you are scenting at all. The styling for a shoot is deliberately more than a viewing needs - props, flowers, table settings, sometimes rented furniture - and the buyer standing in the real flat six weeks later should never feel that the photographs promised a different property. That is a disclosure and expectation question, not a fragrance one, and the answer is a plain sentence about what is and is not included. The fragrance, by contrast, should be the same register at the same level as every viewing of that listing, for exactly the reason a second viewing should match a first: the fewer arbitrary differences between two encounters with a property, the more the buyer is comparing the property itself.
Is there any point scenting a flat for a virtual tour or a 360 walkthrough?
None at all for the output, and the same logic as photography applies with less ambiguity: a 360 capture is a set of stitched images, and images carry no air. Where a virtual tour shoot differs usefully from a stills shoot is that it is quicker, quieter and less physically disruptive, so the flat is in better shape at the end of it - which occasionally makes it a sensible day to hold a viewing afterwards. If you do, treat it exactly like the post-wrap sequence: get the equipment out, ventilate, close up, run the machine for an hour, then let the buyer in. And spend your energy on the things a 360 capture genuinely rewards, which are even light, no clutter, no reflections of the tripod, and doors positioned the way a buyer would walk them.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA commercial range; the scent-marketing strategy advice applies to any business's systems.

Facts verified August 2026: Ambient scent research consistently associates pleasant, congruent scenting with improved evaluations of a space and its service, longer dwell time and stronger brand recall at moderate effect sizes; congruence (scent matching the setting) and gentle intensity outperform strong scenting in replicated studies, and no scent effect survives poor ventilation, poor cleaning or poor indoor air quality. Olfactory memory is unusually durable: scent-linked brand memories persist and retrieve for years, which is the mechanism behind signature scents. Staff exposure is the design constraint, since employees breathe the fragrance for full shifts: whisper calibration, locked settings and sensitivity accommodations are standard practice, and healthcare and wellness settings call for extra restraint. SOSA systems: alcohol-free reed diffusers from ₹749 for single rooms with no power needed; Sukoon 500ml ultrasonic (₹1,899) and Megh 6L ultrasonic (₹3,499) run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance (from ₹299; refills from ₹999, 100ml ₹999); SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is a waterless cold-air nebulising machine, ~1000m³ coverage, Bluetooth app and timer; SOSA Aangan (₹25,999) and SOSA Meenar (₹38,500) are HVAC nebulising systems for approximately 8,000-10,000 and 12,000-18,000 sq ft respectively.
