Honest notes before you buy anything. Coverage ratings assume connected air volume. A machine cannot push scent through a closed bedroom door, and it never will - so a partitioned villa is not one scenting problem but several, and honest sizing means saying so out loud rather than selling you one machine and hoping. Scent the volume that is genuinely open to itself, then give the closed rooms their own quiet answer, usually a reed diffuser. Fragrance never substitutes for ventilation or cleaning. If a room smells damp, stale or of last night's cooking, open it, air it and clean it first; scent added on top of that only makes a more complicated bad smell. A home is not a lobby you pass through. There is a difference between a room that smells nice and a home that has a signature, and almost nobody is told what it is. A room that smells nice is an event: you light a candle, you spray something in the hallway before people arrive, it is lovely for forty minutes and then it is gone. Somewhere else in the house a bathroom gel is doing one thing, a kitchen spray another, and a bedroom reed a third. Four pleasant smells in four rooms is not a fragranced home. It is four rooms.
A signature is the opposite. It is one scent, sized to the house, running on a schedule - so it is already in the air when someone walks through your front door, and already there at eleven at night when you come home yourself, and nobody has lifted a finger to make it happen. That is the whole trick the great hotels use, and it is not complicated: they do not chase smells room by room, they hold one fragrance across the volume people actually move through. Frequently asked questions
If I only remember one thing from this plan, what should it be?
Do not turn it up. Almost every card party fragrance mistake is that one adjustment, and it comes from a false signal. At around ten o'clock the room will smell of nothing to you, and the reason is that you have been in it since the afternoon and your nose stopped reporting on it hours ago, exactly as every guest's nose stopped reporting on it within about half an hour of sitting down. The fragrance has not faded. Your detection of it has, and no increase in setting reverses that, because adaptation happens in the nose rather than in the air. What raising it does instead is push the level past comfortable for whoever is least adapted - the guest who stepped out to the balcony, the relative who arrived late, the person who is sensitive to fragrance - and then leave it there until one in the morning in a room full of people who are seated and cannot leave without abandoning a hand. Set it gently in the afternoon, let it hold, and treat the whole evening as hands-off.
How do I handle the room when several people are smoking near the balcony door?
Physically, not with fragrance, and this is worth being blunt about because the instinct runs the other way. Fragrance adds to what is in a room; it does not remove anything. So a machine turned up against cigarette smoke produces smoke and fragrance together, which everybody in the room will find worse than the smoke alone, and it does nothing at all about what is settling into the curtains. The things that work are unglamorous. Keep the balcony door the actual boundary, so people step out rather than lean in with the door open. Empty and rinse ashtrays through the evening rather than at the end, because a full ashtray keeps working long after the cigarette is finished. Use whatever extraction or fan that end of the room has, and if the weather allows, keep a window at the opposite end cracked so there is a through-draught rather than a pocket. What is the minimum I should do if I do not want to buy anything?
The free half is genuinely most of the result on this night, so do it properly and you will be ahead of most scented houses. The day before: bins out, shoe cabinet at the front door sorted, doormat dry, and the curtains, rugs and cushion covers washed or aired, since they have been absorbing a week of festival frying and keep releasing it.
