Founder Diaries · Diwali Gifting · The Complete 2026 Guide
By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 12 min read Updated August 2026
Diwali gifting fails as a shopping problem and works as a list problem, and almost every guide gets that the wrong way round. There are three variables — how many people, how much money, which fragrance — and they have to be solved in that fixed order, because each one constrains the next. Choose a scent first and you will find it does not multiply by fourteen. Choose a per-head figure first and you will find you never audited the fourteen. Count and tier the list first and both other questions become arithmetic. This is the whole cluster in one page: the counting method, the budget shapes at ₹5,000 through ₹25,000, the five compositions placed honestly, what SOSA does not sell and will not pretend to, and a fourteen-name list costed line by line to ₹10,665.
Quick answers — read this first
Solve quantity first. Write the list as households, not names — an aunt and uncle in one flat are one gift. Then sort into three tiers by how much you know about the home, not by how much you like the people. A nineteen-name list usually becomes eleven or twelve homes.

Then budget, by tier rather than evenly. Two or three households at the top, the bulk of the list at one identical middle price, a courtesy edge at the bottom.

Fragrance last, and by information. At zero information there are two safe compositions: Garden Bloom 50ml ₹799 and Evening Calm 50ml ₹799. Fresh Brew ₹849 is the riskiest blind gift we make.

Buy two or three products across the whole list, not fourteen. The real cost of a Diwali list is decisions, not rupees — and a worked fourteen-name list below comes to ₹10,665, or ₹10,665 ÷ 14 ≈ ₹762 a name, with every line shown.
The short answer
Short answer: count the list as households and sort it into three tiers. Tier one, the homes you could describe, gets a duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 or a 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349. Tier two, the bulk of the list, gets one identical 50ml at ₹749–₹849. Tier three, the courtesy edge, gets a jar candle ₹379, an Everyday Beautiful Mug ₹474 or the Cloud trinket dish ₹664.
What a reed diffuser is, for readers who have not bought one: a refillable glass bottle of fragrance oil with six fibre reeds standing in it. The oil climbs the fibre and evaporates off the exposed length into the room — no flame, no socket, no switch, nothing to operate beyond flipping the reeds weekly. 50ml runs 6–8 weeks; 130ml runs 14–18 weeks, which buys duration rather than reach. It adds fragrance and nothing else: it does not clean air, and it will not remove the smell of cooking, incense or diya smoke.
Straight answer
How should you plan Diwali gifting across budget, quantity and fragrance?
1. Write the list as households, not names. A home fragrance is used by everyone in the home, so an aunt and uncle sharing a hallway are one entry and one gift. This step alone removes roughly a third of most lists, without anybody receiving less. The exceptions worth marking: a young person with their own door, and a relative living independently.

2. Sort the households into three tiers by information, not by affection. Tier one is the two or three homes whose rooms you could describe. Tier two is the annual list — people you are fond of and know almost nothing about, which is the ordinary condition of extended family and not a failing. Tier three is the courtesy edge, where a small marked gesture is the correct scale.

3. Then apply the comparison rule, which overrides everything above. People who will see each other's gifts must receive the same one. Four aunts at one lunch, a team of eight, three neighbours on one landing — variation inside a connected group publishes a ranking you never intended to write.

4. Now divide the money by tier rather than evenly. Even spending across a tiered list is not fairness; it is a refusal to decide, and it produces gifts that are simultaneously too much for the courtesy edge and visibly thin at the top.

5. Buy two or three products across the entire list. Fourteen names should not mean fourteen decisions. The decision cost is the real cost of a Diwali list, and it is what makes people buy badly at the end of it.

6. Choose the fragrance last, and let information decide it. At zero information, Garden Bloom at ₹799: rose and jasmine are references almost every Indian household already carries, so the gift explains itself in the first second.

7. Know the three I would not send blind. Fresh Brew ₹849 divides opinion and is the loudest thing we make. Morning Freshness ₹749 reads as a cleaning product beside a kitchen running all festival. Mountain Breeze ₹849 is dry and austere and can land as cold in a drawing room. All three are excellent in rooms you have stood in.

8. Know where to stop selling. Past roughly 250–300 sq ft of connected open space a reed diffuser is the wrong instrument and a Sukoon at ₹1,899 is the honest answer. Where a household does not want fragrance, buy an unscented mug. Where the recipient works for you, cash comes first.

9. A fragrance gift at Diwali is for the fortnight afterwards. The festival house is already at maximum scent, and a bottle masks nothing in the meantime. Fragrance oil is flammable, so it belongs well away from any lamp, on a tray, out of reach of children and pets.

Everything is composed and handmade in small batches in Pune, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
TL;DR: count households, tier them by information, apply the comparison rule, then split the budget by tier and buy two or three products in total. Tier two takes an identical 50ml at ₹749–₹849, tier one a duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 or a 130ml, tier three a candle at ₹379. A worked fourteen-name list comes to ₹10,665.
SOSA Garden Bloom reed diffuser 50ml, the default Diwali gift for the middle of a list
The bottle that carries the middle of almost every list
SOSA Garden Bloom · British rose & night-blooming jasmine ₹799 / 50ml
If you buy one product several times this Diwali, buy this one. Rose and jasmine are the two fragrance references an Indian household already holds, so nobody has to work out what they have been handed. Mid-range on our own internal strength scale at six reeds — our scale, not an industry standard and not a quality ranking — floral without sharpness, and it does not fight anything already in a room. Refillable glass bottle, six fibre reeds in the box, no flame and no socket. Fibre rather than rattan, because rattan pores clog in Indian humidity. 6–8 weeks at 50ml; the 130ml at ₹1,299 runs 14–18 weeks in the same room. Alcohol-free, phthalate-free and paraben-free on a heat-stable CCT base. Its one honest weakness is the small number of people who reject florals on principle.

Part one — the order of operations

Three variables, one fixed sequence. Quantity constrains budget, budget constrains fragrance, and neither relationship runs the other way. This is why Diwali shopping feels harder than it is: people begin with the pleasant question — which scent — and then discover the answer has to survive being multiplied by fourteen and handed to people whose homes they have never entered.

1
STEP ONE · QUANTITY
Count households, tier them, and apply the comparison rule
Write the list as front doors rather than names, and a nineteen-name obligation immediately becomes eleven or twelve homes. Then sort those homes into three tiers by how much you know about the rooms inside them — a mechanical judgement you can make in four minutes, unlike the emotional one people usually attempt. Then override the tiering wherever comparison exposure demands it. If two sisters have landed in different tiers on your sheet, move one, because whatever varies between their gifts becomes a fact about them at the next family lunch. A tier system that survives being laid out on a table is a good system; one that does not is a ranking with better stationery. At the end of this step you have a number of homes, a tier for each, and no products chosen at all.
The test: would these two people put the gift on the same shelf? Then they are one entry. Will these two people see each other's gifts? Then they are one tier.
2
STEP TWO · BUDGET
Divide by tier, not evenly — and never by dividing the total by the list
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo setWarmth & Bloom₹1,598 · 2 × 50mlThe commonest way an Indian Diwali budget gets set is by dividing a total by a list, and the result is a per-head ceiling nobody actually chose. A ceiling arrived at that way is a list problem wearing a rupee sign, and the fix is upstream: audit the list, then allocate. The shape that works at every total I have seen is the same — two or three households at the top, the bulk of the list at one identical middle price, and a courtesy edge below. What changes with the total is not the shape but where the middle sits: ₹749 at ₹5,000, ₹799 at ₹10,000, ₹849 with room for 130ml bottles at ₹15,000. The top tier is where a duo becomes available, and a duo is worth buying for its shape rather than its price — two 50ml bottles for two separate rooms, in a pair chosen so the compositions share a note. One free-shipping fact exists and it is worth using: above ₹499 there is no delivery charge, which rewards a single consolidated order.
The rule: allocate by tier, then check the total. Never set a per-head figure before the list has been audited.
3
STEP THREE · FRAGRANCE
Information decides the composition — affection has already done its job
By this point the interesting question has become small, which is exactly right. Affection set the budget in step two; it has nothing further to contribute. What decides the composition is what you know about the room the bottle will stand in, and for most of a Diwali list the honest answer is nothing. At zero information there are two safe choices: Garden Bloom and Evening Calm. One observed fact — a kitchen you have stood in, a bedroom door usually shut, a stated dislike — unlocks the rest of the range. Within any connected group the composition must be held constant along with the price: five aunts matched thoughtfully to five different scents produces exactly the ranking the thoughtfulness was trying to avoid.

Part two — the quantity axis, 5 to 30 names

What changes as a list grows is not the money — that scales predictably — but the number of decisions, the uniformity requirement and whether the quantity exists to be bought at all. The single-SKU column is calculated at our lowest reed price so the arithmetic is comparable across sizes; substitute ₹799 or ₹849 and it moves accordingly.

The quantity table
How many products to buy, what it costs at one SKU, and what changes at each size
Names on the list Products to buy One SKU at ₹749 What changes at this size Before you commit
12 ★ Two, plus a courtesy item 12 × ₹749 = ₹8,988 Tiering starts paying for itself; a top tier appears Check who on the list will see whose gift
5 One 5 × ₹749 = ₹3,745 Five different things is still tempting and still wrong Nothing — this size is easy if you resist variety
8 One 8 × ₹749 = ₹5,992 A team of eight sees each other's gifts. Uniformity is fairness Confirm you want one scent for the whole group
15 Two 15 × ₹749 = ₹11,235 Decision cost overtakes rupee savings from shopping around Confirm the quantity of one scent exists
20 Two, sometimes three 20 × ₹749 = ₹14,980 The trade appears: all at ₹749, or five at ₹1,299 Ask through the contact page first
25 Two 25 × ₹749 = ₹18,725 Carrying and admin start to matter more than money Ask about availability. There is no slab to ask about
30 Two 30 × ₹749 = ₹22,470 Stock risk is real — everything is blended in small batches Confirm availability before you promise anybody anything
The honest caveat: the "before you commit" column says ask, so be precise about what there is to ask. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no GST-invoicing statement, no custom branding service and no lead time. Thirty bottles is thirty times the listed price. The reason to write to the contact page is to confirm the quantity exists, because everything is blended in small batches in Pune. No delivery timing is promised anywhere in this guide.

One product per tier — that is the entire buying list
The SOSA principle
Diwali gifting is list management, not gift selection. The winning gift is the one that works for the most names without further thought — and can be bought again next year.
Repeatability is a feature. A gift you can buy fourteen of, and buy again next year, is worth more to a person managing an annual obligation than a gift that is perfect once.

Part three — the budget axis, ₹5,000 to ₹25,000

Four totals, four shapes. What changes as the total rises is not generosity but structure: at ₹5,000 there is one tier and one product; by ₹15,000 a genuine top tier exists; by ₹25,000 the constraint stops being money and becomes carrying.

The budget table
The shape that works at each total, costed — and what the extra money stops buying
Total budget Names it covers The shape The arithmetic What the money stops improving
₹10,000 ★ Twelve One duo, eight identical bottles, three candle two-packs ₹1,498 + (8 × ₹799 = ₹6,392) + (3 × ₹664 = ₹1,992) = ₹9,882 Nothing yet — this total is well matched to a normal list
₹5,000 Six One product, six times, no tiering at all 6 × ₹749 = ₹4,494, leaving ₹506 Breadth. At this total, depth and breadth genuinely trade
₹15,000 Fifteen Two duos, two 130ml, eight 50ml, three candles (2 × ₹1,598 = ₹3,196) + (2 × ₹1,299 = ₹2,598) + (8 × ₹799 = ₹6,392) + (3 × ₹379 = ₹1,137) = ₹13,323 The top tier is now properly funded; below it, little changes
₹25,000 Twenty Three duos, four 130ml, ten 50ml, three dishes (3 × ₹1,598 = ₹4,794) + (4 × ₹1,299 = ₹5,196) + (10 × ₹849 = ₹8,490) + (3 × ₹664 = ₹1,992) = ₹20,472 Almost everything — the binding constraint is now carrying
Any total, second year onward The same list, again Refills for anyone you gifted a bottle to last year 300ml at ₹2,399 ≈ 8–11 months, about ₹7–8 per ml Nothing — this is where the money genuinely goes furthest
The honest caveat: the ₹25,000 row is where I would talk most readers down. Past twenty gifts the improvements stop being about the gift and start being about logistics — a car boot in October heat, twenty handovers in crowded doorways. If you have that budget and a list of twelve, the useful spend is not a larger gift for everyone; it is a duo for two more households and the remainder left unspent.

Part four — the fragrance axis, honestly

Five compositions, and the only useful way to sort them for a gift list is by breadth of acceptance rather than by quality. Garden Bloom ₹799 has the narrowest failure mode we make, which is why it carries the middle of most lists: rose and jasmine are understood immediately and require nobody to develop a taste. Evening Calm ₹799 is the softest, and the right pick for bedrooms, small flats and older homes, with the single caveat that a minority of people dislike lavender and will tell you so. If you are buying for a list you have not visited, buy one of those two several times and stop reading.

The other three are wonderful and are poor blind gifts, and it is worth naming exactly why. Fresh Brew ₹849 is Coorg coffee over Kerala vanilla, and gourmands split a room — people who like it say so instantly and people who do not never come round. It also sits at the top of our internal strength scale at six reeds, so the household that dislikes it is the one that notices it most. Morning Freshness ₹749 is not a taste problem but an adjacency one: lemon, peppermint and eucalyptus are the accord family household cleaners have occupied for fifty years, and beside a kitchen frying through the whole festival the association arrives unbidden. Mountain Breeze ₹849 is dry and deliberately unsweetened — perfect in a study, readable as cold or hotel-like in a drawing room.

Three further things belong on this axis. First, our strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds — not an industry standard, not a concentration and not a quality ranking; the loudest composition is also the one I would least like to post to a stranger. Second, if a household is getting two bottles, the compositions must share a note or the boundary where their air mixes becomes a third smell nobody designed: Fresh & Grounded ₹1,548 meets on green eucalyptus, Warmth & Bloom ₹1,598 on warmth and a soft musk, and Day & Night ₹1,498 is built for two properly separated rooms. Third, the gaps: the range has no oud, no musk-forward composition and no aquatic, and replacement reeds are not sold separately.

Nobody ever ran out of money at Diwali. They ran out of names they were willing to leave off, and then called it a budget.
— Sonal Sahani, SOSA

Part five — what SOSA does not sell

A buying guide that describes only what a company sells is an advertisement with headings. Here is the part usually left out, so nobody plans a list around something that does not exist. SOSA sells no gift card, no gift hamper, no gift box and no curated gift set. The duos at ₹1,498–₹1,598 are two 50ml bottles in one box, and that is what they should be called. There is no gift wrapping service you can rely on, no gift note, no direct-to-recipient arrangement, and no delivery timing of any kind — not a date, not a window, not a cut-off. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact on this page; everything else should be checked at checkout rather than assumed from a blog post.

On quantity the position is equally plain. There is no published bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no stated GST-invoicing arrangement, no custom branding service and no lead time. Twenty-five bottles is 25 × ₹749 = ₹18,725 and there is nothing to negotiate at that scale. What is worth doing before a large single-scent order is writing to the contact page, mainly to confirm the quantity exists, since everything is blended in small batches. On products: the 300ml refill at ₹2,399 is oil only, with no vessel and no reeds; reed oil never goes into a machine and the water-based Hotel Collection never goes into a reed bottle; the Megh at ₹3,499 covers only about 215 sq ft and is a runtime machine, never a coverage upgrade over the Sukoon at ₹1,899; and the Vaayu at ₹11,999 is a commercial cold-air machine that makes no sense in a flat.

Two positions rather than facts, both of which cost us money and both of which I would keep. Nothing we make is a ritual product. Diwali is a festival with real religious meaning; a bottle of fragrance oil has no place in any claim about auspiciousness, a puja space or a ceremony. And where the recipient works for you — house help, a driver, a guard — cash is flexible and it is what most people in that position would choose. A small object alongside it is a courtesy; an object instead of it is a substitution nobody asked for, and no ₹749 bottle is a substitute for a bonus.

Part six — a fourteen-name list, costed

A real-shaped Indian Diwali list, tiered and costed line by line with a running total, so you can see where the money goes and what three decisions look like spread across fourteen names. Every figure is arithmetic on listed prices, not a quotation.

The worked list
Fourteen names, three tiers, three product decisions — ₹10,665 in total
The household Tier What they get, and why Cost Running total
Parents' home ★ One Garden Bloom 130ml — 14–18 weeks, a room you know ₹1,299 ₹1,299

A home with a toddler Three Everyday Beautiful Mug — nothing scented, no flame ₹474 ₹10,001
A household already running a diffuser Three Cloud trinket dish — avoids a second scent in one flat ₹664 ₹10,665
Honest notes for buyers: fourteen names, three product decisions, ₹10,665 in total — ₹10,665 ÷ 14 ≈ ₹762 a name — and one order. The least expensive SOSA reed diffuser is ₹749 and nothing below that price is a reed diffuser in any size; below it are candles from ₹379, the Sandalwood jar ₹449, wax melts ₹474 (a burner is needed and is not included), ceramic mugs ₹474, tapers ₹569, Amber Rose ₹599, and the trinket dish and candle two-pack at ₹664. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no GST-invoicing arrangement, no custom branding and no lead time, and sells no gift card, gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set — every total above is listed prices added together. No delivery timing is promised anywhere in this guide; for a larger order, ask through the contact page first, chiefly to confirm the quantity exists. A reed diffuser adds fragrance to a room; it does not clean air, purify anything or remove cooking or smoke smells. Nothing SOSA makes is a ritual product and no claim of religious suitability is made anywhere. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep any bottle well away from diyas, candles and open flame, stand it on a tray, and keep it out of reach of children and pets; never leave a burning candle unattended. Free shipping above ₹499. Composed and handmade in small batches in Pune; a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
SOSA Warmth and Bloom reed diffuser duo, two 50ml bottles for the top of a Diwali list
The top of the list, and what it is actually for
SOSA Warmth & Bloom duo · Fresh Brew + Garden Bloom ₹1,598 / 2 × 50ml
Two 50ml bottles rather than one larger one, which is the right shape for the two or three households on a list you genuinely know. The reason is structural: output per bottle is fixed at six reeds, so the only way to raise what a home smells of is a second source in a second room. The pairing is deliberate — Fresh Brew and Garden Bloom meet on warmth and a soft musk underneath, so both can run in one flat without a seam where their air mixes. Six fibre reeds each, no flame, 6–8 weeks per bottle. Two bottles in a box; not a hamper and not a curated gift set, and SOSA sells neither. The alternatives are Day & Night at ₹1,498 and Fresh & Grounded at ₹1,548; all three exist at 2 × 130ml for ₹2,498–₹2,598.

A note from Sonal

I trained as a perfumer and I spend most of October thinking about spreadsheets, which is not what anybody imagines this job is. Almost nobody buying at Diwali is buying a fragrance. They are managing an annual obligation with a finite budget and a finite car boot, and the kindest thing I can do is help them finish it in an evening rather than sell them the idea that each name deserves its own act of creativity.

My own list has nineteen names on it and eleven front doors, and it took me three Diwalis to notice the difference. Eleven decisions is a manageable afternoon; nineteen is a fortnight of low-grade dread, and dread is what makes people buy badly at the very end.

The part of this guide that costs us money is Part five, and it is the part I would keep if I had to cut everything else. There is no hamper, no gift box, no gift card, no bulk slab and no delivery promise, and I would rather a reader learned that here than discovered it at checkout after building a plan around it. I also have no way of knowing whether any gift on this page will be appreciated or remembered, and I will not claim otherwise. What I can tell you is what is inside each bottle, how long it runs, how loud it is on our own scale, what it asks of the person receiving it, and where our range does not reach. Everything is blended and poured in small batches in Pune and tested through 45°C heat and 85% monsoon humidity — a car boot in October included. A portion of every order funds a girl's classroom through Nanhi Kali.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I spend per person for Diwali in 2026?
The tier decides it, not the relationship. In the worked list above, tier two runs at ₹749–₹849 a household, tier one at ₹1,299–₹1,598 and the courtesy edge at ₹379–₹664 — ₹10,665 across fourteen names, or ₹10,665 ÷ 14 ≈ ₹762 each. What matters more than the number is that everyone who will see each other's gifts sits in the same tier.
Is it rude to give everyone the same Diwali gift?
No — in a connected group it is usually the kinder arrangement, because variation between recipients reads as ranking whether or not you meant one. The condition is that it must be chosen rather than defaulted to: the same product, the same size, the same price, given without apology. What does read badly is four things that are almost the same at four different prices.
Which SOSA fragrance is safest when I know nothing about the person?
Garden Bloom 50ml at ₹799. Rose and jasmine are references almost every Indian household already carries, so the gift explains itself immediately and requires nobody to acquire a taste. Evening Calm at ₹799 is the second choice. Avoid Fresh Brew blind — it is the most divisive and the loudest thing we make — and keep Morning Freshness away from a kitchen that will be running all festival.
Does SOSA offer bulk pricing, a hamper or corporate gifting terms?
No, to all of it. There is no published bulk pricing, no discount slab, no minimum order quantity, no stated invoicing arrangement, no custom branding service and no lead time, and SOSA sells no gift card, gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set. Twenty-five bottles is 25 × ₹749 = ₹18,725 — the listed price multiplied. For a large single-scent order, write to the contact page first, chiefly to confirm the quantity exists.
Is a 130ml a better gift than a 50ml?
It is a longer one, not a stronger one. At ₹1,249–₹1,349 it runs 14–18 weeks against 6–8, and at six reeds it fills exactly the same room — size buys duration, never reach. On a list its useful property is that it is visibly the same gift as the 50ml, so you can be quietly more generous to one household without adding a second product to a comparison.
Will a reed diffuser help during Diwali week itself?
Not in the way people hope. A festival house is running diyas, incense, marigolds and a kitchen at full tilt, and a reed diffuser is constant and deliberately low — it sits alongside all of that and cannot mask, cancel or remove any of it. Where the air is heavy, the answer is the extractor and an open window. The gift is really the quiet fortnight after everyone has gone home, and because fragrance oil is flammable the bottle should stand well away from any lamp.
Diwali gifting · 2026
Quantity, then budget, then fragrance. Two or three products for the whole list, and one order
Tier two — most of any list — takes an identical 50ml at ₹749–₹849, running 6–8 weeks in a refillable glass bottle with six fibre reeds, no flame and no socket. Tier one takes a duo at ₹1,498–₹1,598 for two rooms, or a 130ml at ₹1,249–₹1,349. The courtesy edge takes a jar candle at ₹379 or a mug at ₹474. About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body, as the complete SOSA Diwali buying guide across budget, quantity and fragrance. No price is quoted for any gift category outside the SOSA range. All totals, including the ₹10,665 worked list and every budget shape in Part three, are arithmetic on listed SOSA prices shown line by line, not quotations. SOSA publishes no bulk pricing, discount slab, minimum order quantity, GST-invoicing arrangement, branding service or lead time, and sells no gift card, gift hamper, gift box or curated gift set; no delivery timing is offered or implied anywhere on this page. Strength figures are positions on SOSA's own internal scale at six reeds — not an industry standard and not a quality ranking. Coverage and duration figures are manufacturer specifications and vary with room shape, ceiling height, airflow and season. Fragrance adds scent to a room; it does not clean air, purify anything, remove cooking or smoke smells, or change how anyone feels, and no claim is made about how any gift will be received or about religious suitability of any kind. Fragrance oil is flammable — keep any diffuser away from diyas, candles and open flame, and out of reach of children and pets.
