Why my diffuser doesn't smell strong (and how to fix it)

The five-step fix, in order

1. Add more drops. The simplest cause is the most common. If you are dosing at 2 to 3 drops in a large room, the scent is real but thin. Add drops one at a time up to about 6 per full tank and re-test by leaving the room and coming back. 2. Descale the misting plate. The tiny ceramic disc that creates the mist gets coated with mineral scale and fragrance residue over time, and a coated plate makes a weak, sputtering mist. Empty the diffuser, wipe the plate gently, then run a descale: a little citric acid or white vinegar in water, a short run or soak, then rinse with clean water and dry. A freshly descaled plate often restores mist output dramatically - people are surprised how much scent they had been losing to buildup.

3. Fix the placement. Mist is heavier than air and cool, so a diffuser on the floor scents your ankles, not your living space. Raise it onto a side table or shelf, ideally a little above seated height, so the mist rises and spreads into the room as it falls. Keep it a foot or two clear of walls and curtains that soak up scent.

4. Switch to filtered water. Hard water - common across much of India - is full of dissolved minerals that both reduce mist output and scale the plate quickly. If your mist looks thin straight after a clean descale, the water is the likely culprit. Use filtered or low-mineral water and you will get a fuller mist and far less frequent descaling.

5. Account for your own nose. If you have done all of the above and the room still seems faint to you, walk outside for a few minutes and come back. Olfactory fatigue is real - your brain tunes out a constant scent to stay alert to new ones. Guests will smell what you no longer do. This is not a fault; it is a feature of how smell works, and the honest reason not to keep adding drops past 6.

Placement, airflow and your own nose

Once the basics are right, placement is where most of the remaining strength lives. A gentle, moving airflow helps a diffuser fill a room - a slowly turning fan on low, or an open doorway, carries the mist outward instead of letting it pool over the unit. A strong draught does the opposite and whisks the scent straight out a window, so aim for movement, not a wind tunnel. In a large open-plan space, a single small diffuser will always feel softer than the same unit in a snug bedroom; that is physics, not a defect, and the fix is more drops within reason or a second unit, not endless fragrance.

Two honest things to keep in mind. First, a diffuser scents and lightly humidifies a room - it does not purify the air, so do not judge it against a claim it never made.
