By Sonal Sahani · ISIPCA Versailles 8 min read Updated August 2026
This is the most common coverage complaint, and the most misread. Strong-at-the-machine, faint-far-away is exactly how an ultrasonic diffuser is supposed to behave — the cool mist is heavy, falls quickly, and concentrates the fragrance where it's released. It's a per-room device doing its job, not a fault.
Quick answers — read this first
Is this normal? Yes, completely. Ultrasonic mist has limited throw, so it's always strongest within a metre or two of the unit. The Sukoon (₹1,799) is designed to scent a room, not project across a hall.

How do I even it out? Raise it off the floor and move it toward the centre of the room, into the natural airflow. Height and central placement do more to spread the mist than anything else.

When is more not the answer? When the room is genuinely large or open. More drops just make the machine's core stronger. For that, add a second unit or upgrade to the waterless Vaayu (₹11,999).
The short answer
Short answer: Because ultrasonic mist is heavy and falls fast, the Sukoon concentrates fragrance near the unit by design; raise and centre it in the airflow to spread it, and for a large or open room add a second diffuser or step up to the waterless Vaayu.
The pick: the SOSA Sukoon (₹1,799) ultrasonic diffuser plus a Hotel Collection scent (from ₹299) is the hotel-at-home starter; a Boond (₹799) suits a small room or desk, and for a large, open-plan or high-humidity space the waterless Vaayu (₹11,999) adds no moisture.

Straight answer
Why does my ultrasonic diffuser only smell strong near the machine?
1. That's the mist behaving normally. Cool ultrasonic mist is heavier than warm scent; it settles within a few feet, so fragrance concentrates around the unit. Nothing is wrong.

2. Get it off the floor. On the floor the mist pools low around the machine. On a table or console it disperses far wider before settling.

3. Move it toward the centre. A unit in a corner scents that corner; a unit central to the room, in the air current, spreads in all directions.

4. Don't chase it with oil. Adding drops makes the machine's core stronger and the far side no better — you get a hotspot, not coverage.

5. For a big room, add a machine. A second Boond (₹799) at the far end, or the waterless Vaayu for an open volume, is the honest fix.

Strong-near-machine is normal throw — raise & centre the Sukoon (₹1,799); for a big room, add a unit or go Vaayu (₹11,999).

Why the fragrance clusters around the unit

1
HEAVY COOL MIST
It settles before it travels
Sukoon - the diffuser Sukoon · the diffuser₹1,799 Warm diffusion lets scent rise and drift; ultrasonic cool-mist does the opposite. The droplets are relatively heavy with water, so they lift a little and then fall, depositing most of the fragrance within a metre or two of the outlet. That's precisely why the space right by the Sukoon smells gorgeous and the far wall smells of nothing. Understanding this one fact ends most of the worry — you're seeing normal cool-mist behaviour, not a weak or failing machine.
Tip: Watch the mist: where it falls is where the scent lands.
2
FLOOR & CORNER TRAPS
Placement can bottle it up
Hotel Collection scents Hotel Collection scentsFrom ₹299 Two placements make the near-machine effect worse: on the floor, where the heavy mist pools low and never reaches sitting or standing height; and in a corner, where two walls block dispersal in half the directions. Together they turn the Sukoon into a scented puddle. Lift it onto furniture and pull it toward the room's centre, and the same machine, same dose, suddenly reads across a far wider arc — no extra fragrance required.
Tip: Table height, room centre, out of the corner — the free upgrade.
3
WHEN IT'S THE ROOM
A hotspot means size up
Vaayu - large room Vaayu · large room₹11,999 If you've raised and centred it and still get a strong core with dead corners, the room has simply outgrown a single water diffuser. Don't keep pouring — that only deepens the hotspot. Add a Boond to cover the far zone, or for a large open span move to the waterless Vaayu, which is built to project through 1000m³. The Sukoon stays perfect for the room it's actually in.
Tip: A hotspot that won't spread is the signal to add a second machine.

Turning a hotspot into coverage

Placement changes cost nothing and do most of the work; hardware is the honest answer only once the room is genuinely big.

Fix the hotspot
What changes the near-machine concentration
Change Effect on coverage Worth it?
Lift off the floor onto furniture Large — mist disperses far wider Do this first, free
Move toward the room's centre Large — spreads in all directions Free, always worth it
Get it out of a corner Moderate — unblocks two directions Free, always worth it
Add 1–2 more drops Small — stronger core, not wider Only if it's genuinely faint up close
Add a second diffuser far off Large — covers a second zone Yes for a big or long room
Upgrade to Vaayu Complete — fills an open volume Yes for open-plan / large spaces

The hotel-at-home kit: one diffuser, seven scents, one small room option
The SOSA principle
A strong core and quiet corners is a diffuser doing exactly what it was built to do — the mist simply can't be in two places at once.
Raise it, centre it, and if the room is big, give it a partner rather than more oil.

You can't pour your way to coverage. Past a certain room size, the answer is another machine, not another bottle.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal that my diffuser only smells strong right next to it?
Yes — it's how ultrasonic cool-mist works. The mist is heavy, falls quickly and concentrates fragrance near the outlet. The Sukoon is a per-room device; a strong core with softer edges is normal and correct, especially in a larger room.
How do I spread the scent out from the machine?
Raise it off the floor onto a table or console and move it toward the centre of the room, in the natural airflow but out of a direct AC blast. Height and central placement disperse the mist much further before it settles — and they cost nothing.
Will more fragrance push the scent further out?
No. It makes the area near the machine stronger but doesn't extend the mist's reach, so you end up with an even bigger hotspot and still-faint corners. Reach is a placement and hardware question; intensity is the dose question.
My room is large — what actually fixes it?
Two zones need two machines. Add a Boond (₹799) at the far end, or for a large open-plan span step up to the waterless Vaayu (₹11,999), which projects through up to 1000m³ and adds no humidity.
Could my nose be the reason the far side seems scentless?
Partly, yes. You habituate to the scent near you and stop registering it, which can make everything feel weak. Walk in from outside, or ask a visitor — if they smell it near the unit and not across the room, that's throw, not your nose or a fault.
From hotspot to whole room
Stop the scent pooling around the machine
Raise and centre the Sukoon for a free, real improvement; for a big or open room, a second Boond or the waterless Vaayu carries it the rest of the way.

About this guide: Written by Sonal Sahani, ISIPCA Versailles-trained founder and perfumer at SOSA Home & Body. Product recommendations reflect the SOSA range; the technique applies to any brand's ultrasonic system.

Facts verified August 2026: An ultrasonic diffuser disperses a water-based fragrance as a cool micro-mist, scenting a room without heat or flame and adding a little humidity. Great hotels use commercial HVAC scenting to create a signature smell; at home the same effect comes from a diffuser plus a hotel-inspired blend. SOSA Sukoon is a 500ml ultrasonic cool-mist diffuser with a 7-colour mood light (₹1,799); Boond is a 300ml mini ultrasonic diffuser (₹799); both run the water-based Hotel Collection fragrance. The Hotel Collection comes in seven scents (Ritz-Carlton, Westin, 1 Hotels, St. Regis, Shangri-La, Four Seasons and W Hotels styles) in 15ml (₹299), 100ml (₹999) and 300ml (₹1,799), plus 15ml Pack of 7 (₹1,799); dose 3-6 drops per tank, use SOSA diffuser fragrance only (not raw essential/carrier oils), and rinse between scents. For large, open-plan or high-humidity spaces the waterless SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999, up to 1000m³) adds no humidity; the Aangan (₹25,999) is a whole-home HVAC system. The scents are SOSA's own interpretations; SOSA is independent and not affiliated with any hotel brand. Prices and availability are subject to change - see the live product pages.
