Modern is the word people reach for when they cannot name what they want, and in fragrance it has almost nothing to do with the year a bottle was released. It describes a shape. Once you can see the shape, you can tell from a note list whether a perfume is going to feel modern to you or not, and an incense composition never will.
Quick answers — read this first
What does modern actually mean in a fragrance? It describes a structure, not a note and not a launch date. A composition that reads as modern is usually built from few materials, with a bright top, a heart that does not linger and very little sitting in the base. You can smell through it. The trade word is transparency. A composition that reads as old-fashioned or heavy is the opposite: a long list of materials, layered deep, with resins and woods holding the bottom in place. Incense is the second shape in its purest form, which is why it can never read as modern however recently it was made.
Which SOSA products are the wrong direction for this?Nawaab, clearly: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber - six materials, all of them substantial, and the densest base SOSA builds. On the SOSA perfume line, Tabac Noir is a tobacco-vanilla and Zaffran is a saffron sweet-amber, and both are built for depth rather than transparency. The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani - the three heaviest attars SOSA makes - and it excludes Adaa entirely, so it is the wrong first purchase twice over.
So what do I buy, and what does it cost? Two honest answers. If you want an attar, it is Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml: five published notes, bergamot and green cardamom on top, and white musk rather than a resin in the base, which makes it the shortest and most transparent composition of SOSA's four attars. If you want the furthest thing in the whole range from an incense structure, it is Samundar at ₹599 for 10ml, an aquatic marine on the SOSA perfume line. It is a spray and it is not an attar, and no note list or wear figure is published for it.
The short answer
Short answer: modern in fragrance describes a structure rather than a note: few materials, a bright top, a thin base, and enough transparency that you can smell through it. Incense is the opposite shape - long, dense and dark - which is why no incense composition ever reads as modern. Of SOSA's four attars, Adaa is the shortest and most transparent, at ₹379 for the 3ml. The furthest thing from an incense structure in the whole range is Samundar, SOSA's aquatic marine, at ₹599 for 10ml, and it is a spray rather than an attar.
The pick: if you want an attar, the 3ml of SOSA Adaa at ₹379 - five published notes, bergamot and green cardamom on top, white musk in the base, alcohol-free and it wears 6-8 hours. If you want the most modern-reading thing SOSA makes, it is SOSA Samundar at ₹599 for 10ml, an aquatic marine on the perfume line, described by SOSA name and accord only, with no published note list and no published wear figure.
Next step: send me the note lists of two perfumes you thought felt modern and two that felt dated to you, and I will show you the structural difference between them rather than guess at your taste - Ask for an attar recommendation.
The attar comes first on this page because the attars are SOSA's own compositions, but the strictest structural answer to your question is on the perfume line, and I would rather say so than force an attar on you.
SOSA Samundar - an aquatic marine on the perfume line, named by accord only
Which perfume oil smells modern rather than incense-like?
Two answers, in the order I would give them at a counter. SOSA makes exactly four attars - Adaa, Ameeri, Mastani and Nawaab - and of those four the one that reads as modern is Adaa, at ₹379 for the 3ml. But the furthest thing in the whole SOSA range from an incense character is not an attar at all: it is Samundar, an aquatic marine on the SOSA perfume line at ₹599 for 10ml, and I would rather tell you that plainly than pretend an oil is the answer to every question. Here is the reasoning, which is the part that lasts. Modern is not a note. It is a structure. A composition that reads as modern is built from a small number of materials: a bright top, a heart that passes through rather than settling, and very little weight in the base. Perfumers call the result transparent, and the word is literal - there is enough space in the composition that you can smell through it to your own skin. An incense composition is the opposite shape in every respect. It uses a long list of materials, it layers them deep, and it anchors the bottom with resins and heavy woods chosen for their staying power, which is why it reads as long, dense and dark. That is not a criticism of incense. Loban and agarbatti have carried real weight in Indian life for centuries and the itr tradition attar belongs to is built partly on exactly those materials. It simply means the two shapes cannot be reconciled, and if what you want is the modern one then the incense one is not a lighter version of it - it is a different construction. So, the ruling out. Nawaab is out: white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, six substantial materials and the deepest base SOSA builds. On the perfume line, Tabac Noir is a tobacco-vanilla and Zaffran a saffron sweet-amber, both built downwards rather than across. The Pack of 3 at ₹1,055 is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, the three heaviest attars, with no Adaa in it. What stands is Adaa - five notes, bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk underneath, alcohol-free, no DPG, 6-8 hours, which is the only wear figure SOSA publishes - and Samundar if you want a spray and the most transparent thing here. Three disclosures. Adaa carries jasmine sambac, in a supporting role. Samundar is described by its SOSA name and its accord only, with no published note list and no published wear figure, so if you need to know exactly what is in a bottle, stay with the attars. And SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health claim of any kind.Ask for an attar recommendation and send me the two bottles you thought felt modern.
Modern describes a structure: few materials, a bright top, a thin base, enough space to smell through. Incense is the opposite shape, so the two cannot be reconciled. Adaa at ₹379 for 3ml is the attar version of the modern shape; Samundar at ₹599 for 10ml is the furthest thing from incense in the range, and it is not an attar.
The perfume-line answer is SOSA Samundar, an aquatic marine, at ₹599 for 10ml. Named by SOSA name and accord only, with no published note list and no published wear figure, and it is a spray rather than an attar. If you want an attar instead, it is Adaa at ₹379 for the 3ml.
The attar first, because the attars are SOSA's own compositions and their notes are published in full. Then the perfume-line answer, which is the stricter reading of your question. Both cards link to the live listing.
Not an attar. This is the SOSA perfume line, described by its SOSA name and its accord only: an aquatic marine. It is the furthest thing in the range from a dense, resinous structure. No note list and no wear figure is published for it, so if you need the full composition in front of you before buying, stay with the attars. ₹599 for 10ml.
Five published notes: bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base. No oud, no amber, no resin, and the thinnest base of SOSA's four attars. Alcohol-free, no DPG carriers, and it wears 6-8 hours. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size.
10ml, 50ml and 100ml at ₹599, ₹1,799 and ₹3,499. An aquatic marine, referred to by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the perfume line, so none is given here. It is a spray rather than a perfume oil, which means its reach is the widest of the three formats SOSA sells. Composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune.
Three steps. The first is the idea, the second is the arithmetic, and the third is the part where I rule our own bottles out.

Stop reading modern as a date
A composition released last month can have a nineteenth-century shape, and often does
There is no year on a smell. What people mean when they say a perfume feels modern is that it has room in it: they can register the perfume and their own skin at the same time, rather than a solid block of material sitting on top. That effect comes from restraint in the formula, not from novelty. Plenty of compositions launched this year are built in the old deep shape because depth sells as luxury, and plenty of ideas fifty years old were transparent. So when you say you want something modern, you are describing how much is in the bottle and where it sits, which is a question a note list can actually answer.
Tip: Ignore the launch year and the bottle design. Count the notes and look at where the heavy ones sit.
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
The number of notes and the weight of the base are the two things you can read off a listing
A short list is a good first signal. Five published notes means five decisions; twelve means the perfumer was building depth, and depth is what you are trying to avoid. Then read the last two notes, because that is the base, and the base is what you wear for most of the day. If the base is a resin, an amber, an oud or a heavy wood, the composition is anchored and it will feel dense whatever the top note promised. If the base is a musk, the composition will stay thin as it dries down. Adaa is five notes with white musk at the bottom. Nawaab is six materials with oud, leather and amber at the bottom.
Tip: Five or six published notes with a musk base is the modern shape. Ten notes with a resin base is not.
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
Two of ours are built for depth, and one of them is the most expensive thing we make
Nawaab is white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. It is the most expensive raw-material attar SOSA makes and it is the wrong shape for you, and I would rather lose the sale than have you find that out at ₹1,199. Mastani stacks night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka - six materials and a deep base. Ameeri is rose, sandalwood, saffron and soft oudh, warm rather than dark but still substantial. Adaa is the only one of the four built thin. On the perfume line, Tabac Noir and Zaffran are both built downwards, so neither is your direction either.
One bottle of Adaa from ₹379 is the whole purchase here.
Modern in fragrance describes a structure rather than a note: a few materials, a bright top and almost nothing holding the base down.
Incense is the opposite construction, built long and deep on purpose, which is why it cannot be made to read as modern by adding anything to it.
The most transparent thing in the range: SOSA Samundar is an aquatic marine on the perfume line, named by SOSA name and accord only. ₹599 for 10ml, and it is a spray rather than an attar.
This is the reading method, and it works on any brand's listing, not only on ours.
The SOSA shortlist
What to look at on a listing when you want modern rather than dense
What you are looking at
What to do
The number of published notes
Five or six is a short composition and usually reads transparent. Ten or twelve means depth was the intention. Adaa publishes five notes; Nawaab publishes six substantial ones.
The last two notes on the list
That is the base, and it is what you wear for most of the day. A musk stays thin. A resin, an amber, an oud or a heavy wood anchors the whole thing and makes it feel dense.
Words like deep, rich, oriental, opulent
Marketing language for the long shape. None of it is dishonest, but it is telling you the composition was built downwards rather than across.
Words like transparent, crisp, luminous
Marketing language for the short shape. Check it against the note list, because the words are free and the materials are not.
The format
A spray opens wider and faster than an oil; an oil sits close to skin. That is a fact about the format and not a claim that one lasts longer than the other.
An aquatic or marine accord
Structurally the furthest thing from incense: bright, airy and with little in the base. Samundar is SOSA's, at ₹599 for 10ml, and it is not an attar.
If the word you actually want is airy rather than modern, the structural version of that question is which attar feels airy and contemporary instead of dark and dense, which takes the same idea down to the individual materials. And if your objection is really the resin rather than the shape, that is a different page: I hate incense-like perfumes explains why a resin is always the last thing to leave. SOSA is an independent Indian fragrance house and every attar named here is its own composition.
The attar with the thinnest base: SOSA Adaa is five published notes with white musk at the bottom, the shortest composition of SOSA's four attars. ₹379 for the 3ml, which is the sample size.
SOSA makes exactly four attars, and I would rather print all four with their published notes than hand you a shortlist with the heavy ones left out. Below is the attar answer, the perfume-line answer and the second perfume-line option, with the standing limits named underneath. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA attar specification
The transparent options, and the honest limits on what SOSA publishes for each
A reader who wants the least dense thing SOSA makes
An aquatic marine on the SOSA perfume line, named by SOSA name and accord only. No note list and no wear figure is published for it. A spray, not an attar. ₹599 for 10ml
Five published notes - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk - with the thinnest base of the four attars. Alcohol-free, wears 6-8 hours. Buy the 3ml
The rule worth keeping from this page is that modern is a shape you can read off a listing: count the notes, then look at the last two. SOSA makes exactly four attars, and Nawaab, Tabac Noir, Zaffran and the Pack of 3 are named here as built for depth rather than transparency. The only longevity figure SOSA publishes is that the attars wear 6-8 hours; nothing at all is published for the perfume line or the solid body perfumes, so no figure is given for Samundar or Khayaal on this page, and no note list is published for the solids, which is why this page never says how one smells. SOSA publishes no outcome claim for a fragrance, because there is no honest way to measure one, and makes no health or skin-safety claim of any kind - how a dense fragrance affects you physically is a question for a doctor rather than a perfumer. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only other thing promised here. Ask for an attar recommendation before you spend anything.

A note from Sonal
Modern is the word I get most often from readers who cannot name what they want, and I have learned not to treat it as vague. When I ask what they mean, the answer is almost always the same picture: something they can wear without feeling it sitting on them, something they can smell past. That is a real and specific request. It is just not a request about a note, which is why a shop assistant who answers it by handing over the newest launch usually misses.
The perfumery is a matter of arithmetic more than artistry. Every material you add to a composition takes up room, and the heavy materials - resins, ambers, thick woods - take up the most and stay the longest, because that is what they are for. Build with ten of them and you get depth, which many people want and pay for. Build with five and keep the bottom light and you get transparency, where the composition dries down to something close to your own skin with a suggestion over it. Incense sits at the far end of the first approach. Nothing you add will make it transparent, because the materials that define it are the ones that fill the space.
So my answer comes in two parts. The attar is Adaa, ₹379 for 3ml, five notes with white musk at the bottom and the 3ml is the sample size because SOSA sells no sampler. The strictest answer to your actual question is Samundar, an aquatic marine, ₹599 for 10ml, and it is a spray on our perfume line rather than an attar, with no note list published for it. I am ruling out Nawaab, Tabac Noir, Zaffran and the Pack of 3. Adaa carries jasmine sambac, and you should hear it from me. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Frequently asked questions
Which perfume oil smells modern without an incense-like character?
Of SOSA's four attars, Adaa: five published notes, bergamot and green cardamom on top, neroli and jasmine sambac in the heart, white musk in the base, at Rs 379 for the 3ml. It has the shortest note list and the thinnest base of the four. If you want the furthest thing in the whole SOSA range from an incense structure, that is Samundar, an aquatic marine on the perfume line at Rs 599 for 10ml, and it is a spray rather than an attar.
What makes a fragrance feel modern rather than old-fashioned?
Structure, not the launch date. A modern-reading composition uses few materials, has a bright top and keeps very little weight in the base, so there is space in it and you can smell through to your own skin. A dense composition uses a long list of materials and anchors the base with resins, ambers or heavy woods. Both are legitimate ways to build a perfume. You can tell them apart by counting the published notes and reading the last two.
Why can't an incense fragrance be made to feel modern?
Because the materials that define it are the ones that fill the space. Incense means resins - frankincense, myrrh, labdanum, benzoin - and resins are fixatives, chosen because they are slow and they hold everything else in place. A composition built on them is long and deep by construction. Adding a bright citrus on top does not change the shape underneath; it just gives you twenty minutes of citrus before you arrive at the same base.
Which SOSA products should I avoid if I want nothing dense?
Nawaab, whose published notes are white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber, and which is the heaviest thing SOSA makes for skin. On the SOSA perfume line, Tabac Noir is a tobacco-vanilla and Zaffran is a saffron sweet-amber, both built for depth. And the Pack of 3 at Rs 1,055, which is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, the three heaviest attars, with no Adaa in it.
Is Samundar an attar?
No, and that matters for what SOSA can tell you about it. Samundar is on the SOSA perfume line, which is referred to by SOSA name and accord only: it is an aquatic marine, at Rs 599 for 10ml, Rs 1,799 for 50ml and Rs 3,499 for 100ml. No note list and no longevity figure is published for the perfume line, so if you want the full composition in front of you before you buy, choose one of the four attars instead, where every note is published.
And what the perfume line does not publish: No note list and no longevity figure is published for Samundar or for any perfume on the SOSA line, so if you need the full composition in front of you, buy an attar instead.

Facts verified 17 September 2026 against the live SOSA product pages: SOSA makes four attars, each sold in three sizes, 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. SOSA Adaa is ₹379, ₹669 and ₹1,149, with published notes of bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. SOSA Ameeri is ₹385, ₹679 and ₹1,165, with published notes of Taif rose, Indian sandalwood, Persian saffron and soft oudh. SOSA Mastani is ₹389, ₹685 and ₹1,179, with published notes of night-blooming jasmine, Damask rose, Mysore sandalwood, oudh, vanilla and tonka. SOSA Nawaab is ₹399, ₹699 and ₹1,199, with published notes of white royal oud, Mysore sandalwood, Kashmir saffron, aged tobacco, leather and amber. All four are alcohol-free perfume oils with no DPG carriers, on a skin-safe jojoba and sandalwood base, composed by an ISIPCA Versailles-trained perfumer and hand-blended in Pune, and the only longevity figure SOSA publishes for them is that they wear 6-8 hours. The Pack of 3 (₹1,055, ₹1,859 and ₹3,189) is Ameeri, Nawaab and Mastani, and it does not include Adaa. The SOSA perfume line - including Khayaal and Samundar - comes in 10ml, 50ml and 100ml and is referred to on these pages by its SOSA name and its accord only. SOSA publishes no note list and no longevity figure for the solid body perfumes or for the perfume line, so neither is given here, and how a solid body perfume smells is never described. SOSA sells no attar sampler and no discovery set, which is why the 3ml is the sample size and is what these pages recommend buying first. Free shipping above ₹499 is the only logistics fact stated on these pages. Choosing a fragrance is a matter of preference: SOSA makes no health, skin-safety, hypoallergenic, therapeutic or wellbeing claim for any fragrance, makes no claim about compliments, confidence or any other outcome of wearing one, and offers nothing here as medical advice - a reaction on skin is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a perfumer.
