Five materials do most of this work. Put any of them under a citrus and it stops sounding like a product; put three of them under it and you have a fragrance.
Quick answers — read this first
Which notes lift citrus? Green cardamom, neroli, tea, transparent musk and real sandalwood. Each adds a dimension citrus lacks on its own.
Why do they work? Because citrus is thin and high. Anything that adds body, bitterness or length underneath it reads as composition rather than product.
Which one?Adaa uses three of the five - cardamom, neroli and transparent musk.
The short answer
Clean is an effect, not a family. It comes from three things together: a bright citrus-green top, no sugar anywhere, and a clean white musk base that reads as skin.
The non-negotiable. No sugar. Sweetness is the single thing that stops a fragrance reading as clean, and it is in most "fresh" bottles. Every SOSA attar is alcohol-free and DPG-free.
SOSA in one line. Alcohol-free, DPG-free, IFRA-compliant attars on a jojoba and Mysore sandalwood base, 6-8 hours on skin, 3ml / 6ml / 12ml, ₹379-₹1,199, hand-blended in Pune.
Start here. For clean, Adaa 3ml at ₹379 - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the only genuinely clean composition I make.
Illustrative only. Clean is an effect rather than a fragrance family: a bright citrus-green opening gives the first impression, and a clean white musk base is what still reads as clean at hour four.
So which notes make citrus smell like fine fragrance?
Green cardamom for dry aromatic body. Neroli for a floral bridge that shares the citrus brightness without adding sugar. Tea for a dry, tannic bitterness that reads as immediately grown-up. Transparent musk for length and skin-presence. Real sandalwood for creamy warmth underneath. Citrus on its own is thin, high and short; each of these adds a dimension it lacks. Three or more of them under a bergamot and you have a fragrance rather than a bright note. Adaa uses cardamom, neroli and transparent musk.
Short version: citrus is thin, high and short. These five materials fix each of those problems in turn.
Want the short path?Adaa uses three of the five under its bergamot.
This is the constructive version of every complaint in this section - rather than what to avoid, what actually to look for on a listing.
What "clean" actually means
Clean is not a fragrance family - it is an effect, produced by a specific combination: bright citrus and green materials on top, no sugar anywhere, and a clean white musk base that reads as skin rather than as perfume. Remove any one of those three and the effect collapses.
1
Criterion one
Green cardamom — body
Dry, aromatic and warm at once. It sits directly under the citrus and gives it something to stand on, which removes the thin, edgy quality that pure citrus has. It is also considerably more tenacious than citrus, so it extends the bright impression well past the point where bergamot alone would have vanished.
2
Criterion two
Neroli — the floral bridge
From the same tree as bitter orange, and it carries both citrus brightness and a white-floral roundness. It bridges the gap between the top and the heart of a composition so there is no gap where the citrus drops out - which is the moment most cheap fresh fragrances fall apart.
Tea adds a dry tannic bitterness that reads as sophisticated immediately. Transparent musk adds length and skin-presence, turning a forty-minute impression into an eight-hour fragrance. The musk is the least noticeable and the most important.
4
Criterion four
Real sandalwood — creamy warmth
Optional but transformative. Sandalwood under citrus gives a creamy, milky warmth that no citrus can produce alone. Ameeri is what that combination sounds like when the sandalwood is allowed to lead rather than support.
5
Criterion five
Citrus gives the impression; the anchor gives the hours
Citrus materials are small and volatile - beautiful for half an hour and then gone, faster still in Indian heat. A clean fragrance that lasts needs something dry underneath that shares the brightness: green cardamom for aromatic lift, neroli to bridge, then the musk. Without that anchor you have forty clean minutes and seven hours of nothing.

Where SOSA sits - and where another attar might suit you better
If you take one thing from this cluster, take this list. It works on any brand's listing and it will save you from a great many bright, empty bottles.
The honest position
Three or more of these, and citrus becomes a fragrance.
Where I think we earn a place on your shortlist: real green cardamom, real neroli and a transparent musk under real bergamot, all named on the listing. Where another house might suit you better: a tea-led citrus is a wonderful register and I do not currently make one.
"Clean means weak." It does not. Clean is about the materials - no sugar, clean musk, bright top - not about strength. A clean fragrance can last eight hours and still read as skin.
✕
"All fresh fragrances smell the same." Most of the cheap ones do, because they lean on the same handful of inexpensive fresh materials. The difference is what sits underneath - real cardamom and neroli, or nothing.
✕
"Clean is boring." Only when it is thin. A clean composition with real material is quietly interesting all day - reviews here are illustrative, not a guarantee.
Take the list to any listing and count how many appear. Adaa has three of the five.
The SOSA attar range
All four are alcohol-free and DPG-free in 3ml, 6ml and 12ml. Adaa carries cardamom, neroli and transparent musk; Ameeri and Mastani carry real sandalwood.
"I just want to smell clean" is the single most common thing anyone says to me, and it is a harder brief than it sounds - because clean is not a fragrance family. It is an effect, and it takes three things at once: a bright citrus-green opening, a clean white musk base that reads as skin rather than as perfume, and no sugar anywhere.
That third condition is why so many bottles sold as fresh do not stay clean. Sweetness is inexpensive and it tests well at a counter, so it finds its way into almost everything - and by hour three you are wearing something that announces itself as perfume rather than as a person who is well-groomed.
Adaa is the only genuinely clean thing I make, and I would rather say that plainly than stretch the word across my whole range. I do not make an aquatic and I do not make a standalone white musk. If those are what you want, buy them from someone who does - and if a clean citrus-green-musk is what you are after, mine is worth your ₹379.
Frequently asked questions
Why do so many fresh perfumes smell the same?
Because the inexpensive route to freshness uses a small set of the same synthetic materials, with very little underneath them. The difference between one clean fragrance and another shows up at hour two, not at the counter - so test on skin and wait.
Which SOSA attar smells cleanest?
Adaa - bergamot, green cardamom, neroli, jasmine sambac and white musk. It is the only genuinely clean composition in the range; Ameeri is warm, Mastani is rich and Nawaab is deep, and I would not sell any of them as fresh. From ₹379.
Is a clean attar suitable for the office?
It is the best thing for an office. Adaa sits close to the skin rather than dispersing across a shared, air-conditioned room, and at one dab it reads as well-groomed rather than as perfumed. It was written for exactly those hours.
Does "clean" mean the fragrance is weak?
No. Clean is a property of the materials - no sugar, a clean musk base, a bright top - not of the strength. SOSA attars wear 6-8 hours on skin, and the clean effect lasts as long as the scent does because the musk base is what creates it.
How long does a clean attar last on skin?
6-8 hours for the SOSA range, slightly longer on warm or oily skin. The citrus impression fades within the first hour; what remains, and what still reads as clean, is the musk base.
