Placement is the difference between a machine that works and a machine that disappoints you, and in an air-conditioned room it matters more than the setting, the fragrance or the price. The air in a cooled room is moving in a loop all day. Put the machine on the right part of that loop and the room does the distribution for you. Put it on the wrong part and you get a strong smell in one corner and nothing anywhere else.
Quick answers — read this first
Where should I place a scent machine in an air-conditioned room? On the return-air path, where the room's air travels back towards the indoor unit, about two metres away and out of the direct throw of the louvres. That way the circulation picks the fragrance up and distributes it around the whole volume instead of leaving it in one corner. Never place it directly under the indoor unit, where condensate can drip and the air is coldest and driest, and never head-on into the cold stream, which scatters the plume and dumps it against the far wall. Give it about a foot of clear air, not behind a curtain or inside a closed cabinet. In a ducted home, mount it to the duct.
Can a scent diffuser be placed under an air conditioner? No, that is the single worst position in the room. The air directly below a wall-mounted indoor unit is the coldest and driest in the space, condensate can drip from the unit, and you are at the wrong end of the circulation loop, so the output goes straight back into the cold stream and is scattered. Move it to the side of the room the air returns along, roughly two metres from the unit and out of the direct throw. In a room where the only convenient surface is under the unit, wall mount the machine on a side wall instead.
Should a scent machine be mounted to ducted air conditioning? Where the house is ducted, yes, and it is usually better than any position in a room. Mounting to the duct puts fragrance into the air the house is already distributing, so every room the system serves gets the same character at the same level and nothing has to stand on a console. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is designed for freestanding, wall or HVAC mounting and covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. If the ducted volume is a whole villa rather than a floor, that becomes a sizing question worth settling before you buy.
The short answer
Short answer: on the return-air path, where the room's air travels back towards the indoor unit, about two metres away and out of the direct throw of the louvres, with a foot of clear air around it. Never directly under the indoor unit, where condensate drips and the air is coldest and driest, and never head-on into the cold draught, which scatters the plume against the far wall. Wall mount above eye level in a small room, and in a ducted home mount it to the duct instead.
The pick: the SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), which can be freestanding, wall mounted or HVAC mounted, covers 1000m³ or about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, runs under 38dB, and has a key-lock for a room children use.
Next step: send us a photo of the room with the indoor unit in frame and we will tell you exactly where to stand or mount it - ask us what fits your home.
The rule underneath all five is the same: put the machine where the air is genuinely moving and let the circulation distribute the fragrance, instead of firing it into the coldest, fastest part of the stream. Placement is worth more than intensity in a cooled room.
Where exactly should the machine stand in a room with an air conditioner?
Placement in an air-conditioned room comes down to one idea: put the machine where the room's air is genuinely moving, and let the circulation carry the fragrance for you, rather than firing it into the coldest, fastest part of the stream. In practice that is four rules. Put it near the return path - the route air takes back towards the indoor unit, or the return grille in a ducted system - because anything picked up there is redistributed around the whole room instead of sitting in one place. Never directly under the indoor unit. Condensate can drip, the air immediately below a wall unit is the coldest and driest in the room, and that spot is the wrong end of the loop anyway. Never where the cold draught hits it head on. A nebuliser puts out a fine, light plume, and a jet of cold air across that plume scatters it and dumps it against the far wall in seconds, which reads as a strong smell in one corner and nothing anywhere else. Keep it a couple of metres from the indoor unit, out of the direct throw, to one side or along the wall the circulation returns down. And give it clear air - about a foot around it, not behind a curtain, not inside a closed console, not on the floor in a corner. Now, how to find the return path in your own room without any equipment. A wall-mounted split takes air in through the grille on its top face and blows it out of the louvres at the bottom, so the cold air leaves the unit, travels across the room, drops as it cools whatever it meets, and works its way back along the floor and the walls towards the unit to be drawn up again. The far side of that circuit - the part of the room where air is heading back towards the unit rather than away from it - is your return path. In a cassette unit in a false ceiling, the return is the central grille and the supply is around the edges, so the return path is directly beneath and around the middle of the unit rather than at the perimeter. In a ducted system it is obvious: there is a return grille, usually large and often in a passage or a hallway, and that is where you want to be. A tissue held up will show you which way the air is moving in about ten seconds if you are unsure. Height matters too: wall mounting above eye level puts the output where air is moving freely rather than at ankle height behind furniture, keeps the machine out of the traffic in a small room, and keeps it out of reach of children, which is what the key-lock is also for. If the home is ducted rather than run on individual split units, there is a better answer than any position in a room: mount the machine to the ductwork itself. The Vaayu is built for freestanding, wall or HVAC mounting, and on a duct it puts fragrance into the air the house is already distributing, so every room the system serves gets the same character at the same level and nothing has to stand on a console anywhere. If the ducted volume is genuinely large - a full villa rather than a floor - that becomes a sizing question rather than a placement one, and it is worth settling before you buy anything. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) is designed for all three - freestanding, wall or HVAC mounted - covers 1000m³ or about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, and runs under 38dB, so it disappears under the noise of the unit. A scent machine does not remove odour molecules. It adds fragrance molecules alongside them. Nothing about diffusing a fragrance breaks down, neutralises, captures or cancels what is already in the air, and any brand telling you otherwise is overselling a fragrance product. Run a diffuser in a house that has had no fresh air for a fortnight and a coil that has not been cleaned in two years, and you get both at once, which is genuinely worse than either alone. A free home scenting plan will place it from a photo, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
On the return path, about two metres from the indoor unit, out of the direct throw, with a foot of clear air around it. Never under the unit, never head-on into the cold stream. Wall mount in a small room, duct mount in a ducted home.
The SOSA Vaayu can stand on a surface, wall mount above eye level or mount to ductwork, which is what makes it easy to get onto the return path in almost any room. 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), under 38dB, 5W, with auto-stop and a key-lock.
One machine, and the reason it is the one on this page is that it can be positioned three different ways. A machine you can only stand on a table is a machine you will end up putting wherever there is a free surface, which is rarely where the air is.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser at ₹11,999 that can be freestanding, wall mounted or HVAC mounted, so it goes where the air is rather than where the furniture is. 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, rated to 1000m³ - about 2,000-3,000 sq ft - under 38dB and 5W.
Above eye level on a side wall puts the output where air moves freely rather than at ankle height behind a sofa, keeps the machine out of the traffic, and keeps it out of reach of children. Auto-stop and a key-lock for a room a child uses.
Mounted to the ductwork, it puts fragrance into the air the house is already distributing, so every room the system serves gets the same character at the same level and nothing stands on a console anywhere. Bluetooth app, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers, adjustable intensity.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank lasting up to about 75 days, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Waterless, so no moisture added to a room you are keeping cool and dry, and no standing water in a tank. Made in India.
Three steps: find where the air returns, choose a height and a mounting, and then check the four things that quietly ruin a good position.
1
Find the return
Ten seconds with a tissue tells you what the room is doing
A wall-mounted split draws air in through the grille on its top face and blows it out through the louvres below, so the cold air leaves the unit, crosses the room, sinks as it cools whatever it meets, and travels back along the floor and walls towards the unit to be drawn up again. The half of that circuit where air is heading back to the unit is the return path, and it is where you want the machine. A ceiling cassette works the other way round: the return is the central grille and the supply blows out around the edges, so the return path is beneath and around the middle rather than the perimeter. A ducted system makes it easy, because there is a visible return grille, usually large and often in a passage. If you are unsure, hold a strip of tissue up at various points in the room while the unit runs and watch which way it leans. Ten seconds of that beats any amount of guessing, and it usually surprises people: the corner they had picked for the machine is very often the deadest air in the room.
Tip: hold a tissue up while the unit runs - the return path is where it leans back towards the unit.
The Vaayu covers 1000m³ from one point, which only works if that point is on the circulation.
Freestanding, wall mounted above eye level, or on the duct
Once you know where, decide how. Freestanding on a console, a shelf or a low unit is fine as long as it is not tucked behind a lamp, a photo frame or a curtain, and as long as there is about a foot of clear air in front of the outlet. In a small or busy room, wall mounting above eye level is better: the output sits where air moves freely instead of at ankle height behind furniture, the machine is out of the traffic and off a surface that is already full, and it is out of reach of children, which is what the key-lock is also for. In a ducted home, mounting to the ductwork beats every position in every room, because it puts fragrance into the air the house is already distributing and nothing has to stand anywhere. The Vaayu is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and weighs 0.9kg, so none of these three is a construction project.
Freestanding, wall or HVAC mounted - the Vaayu is designed for all three, which is what makes placement flexible.
Under the unit, in the jet, behind something, or too close to a door
Four things ruin an otherwise sensible position. First, directly under the indoor unit: condensate can drip, the air there is the coldest and driest in the room, and you are at the wrong end of the loop. Second, head-on into the cold stream: a nebuliser produces a fine light plume, and a jet of cold air across it scatters the plume and deposits it against the far wall in seconds, which reads as a strong smell in one place and nothing anywhere else. Keep about two metres and stay out of the direct throw of the louvres. Third, enclosed or obstructed: behind a curtain, inside a closed console, in a corner between two pieces of furniture, or with the outlet pointing at a wall a few inches away. Fourth, immediately beside an external door in a house where that door opens often, since the draught takes a share of the output straight outside. Beyond that, keep it off the floor where dust is worst, out of direct sun, and away from anything a toddler can reach.
Tip: two metres from the unit, out of the throw, a foot of clear air, and never underneath it.
Under 38dB and 5W means the Vaayu can sit in a living room or on a sleeping floor without anybody noticing it.
In a cooled room, where you put the machine is worth more than what you set it to. The circulation is either working for you or working against you, and it is decided by about a metre and a half.
The corner people instinctively choose is almost always the deadest air in the room.
Positionable three ways: SOSA Vaayu can be freestanding, wall mounted above eye level or mounted to ductwork, so it goes where the air is rather than where the free surface is. ₹11,999.
Four positions, and what each actually produces. Only one of them is what you want, and two of them are what most people do.
The SOSA plan
Four positions in an air-conditioned room
What you are actually dealing with
What fixes it
Directly under the indoor unit
The worst spot in the room. Condensate can drip, the air is coldest and driest there, and the output goes straight back into the cold stream at the wrong end of the loop. Move it, or wall mount on a side wall instead.
Facing head-on into the cold draught
The jet scatters the fine plume and deposits it against the far wall within seconds, so you get a strong smell in one place and nothing anywhere else, and you use far more oil doing it. Stay out of the direct throw.
In a corner, behind a curtain or inside a closed console
Dead air. Fragrance in still air stays a small pool rather than travelling, so the machine appears weak and gets turned up, which is the beginning of over-scenting a house.
On the return path, two metres out, with clear air
What you want. The SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) here covers 1000m³ from one point, because the circulation does the distributing. Freestanding, wall mounted above eye level, or mounted to the duct in a ducted home. View →
The SOSA specification for an air-conditioned home
One machine, and it is on this page specifically because it can be positioned three ways. Freestanding where there is a sensible surface on the return side, wall mounted above eye level where the room is small or busy, and mounted to the ductwork where the house is ducted. Waterless, so nothing damp is added to a cooled room wherever it ends up. Made in India, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The SOSA air-conditioned home specification
Air the house, clean the AC, then one machine on the return-air path
An air-conditioned home or floor of up to about 2,000-3,000 sq ft of connected space
1000m³ coverage, waterless so no moisture is added to a room you are keeping cool and dry, 400ml tank up to about 75 days, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, auto-stop and key-lock, freestanding, wall or HVAC mounted
Placement first, intensity second. One line worth being plain about: a fragrance machine is a fragrance machine. It is not an air purifier. It does not filter, disinfect, dehumidify or remove anything from the air, and it makes no health claim of any kind. A note from Sonal
I have lost count of the number of people who told me a machine was underpowered when it was simply in the wrong metre of the room. In an air-conditioned space the air is moving in a loop from the moment the unit starts, and everything depends on which part of that loop you deliver into. The instinct is to put the machine somewhere it looks good, which is usually a corner, and a corner is where air goes to stand still.
So my advice is always the same and it costs nothing to test. Hold a tissue up while the unit runs and find the half of the room where the air is travelling back towards it. Put the machine there, two metres out, out of the throw, with clear air in front of it. Then, if the room is small or full, put it on the wall above eye level instead of on the console. A Vaayu mounted properly at a low setting will outperform the same machine on a shelf at full intensity every time.
And the honest part. One line worth being plain about: a fragrance machine is a fragrance machine. It is not an air purifier. It does not filter, disinfect, dehumidify or remove anything from the air, and it makes no health claim of any kind. No position in the world will make a house with stale air smell fresh; that is a window and a filter brush. Frequently asked questions
Where should I place a scent machine in an air-conditioned room?
On the return path, where the room's air is actually moving back towards the indoor unit, or near the return grille in a ducted home. That way the circulation redistributes the fragrance around the whole room instead of leaving it in one spot. Never place it directly under the indoor unit, where condensate can drip and the air is coldest and driest, and never where the cold draught hits it head on, because a jet of cold air scatters the plume and dumps it against the far wall. Keep it a couple of metres away and out of the direct throw, with about a foot of clear air around it.
How far from the AC unit should the diffuser be?
Roughly a couple of metres away, and out of the direct throw of the louvres. Never directly underneath the indoor unit, where condensate can drip and the air is coldest and driest, and never head-on into the cold stream, which scatters the plume and dumps it against the far wall. Put it on the side of the room the air returns along, at about waist height or wall mounted above eye level, with a foot of clear air around it and no curtain or closed cabinet in front of it. In a ducted home, mounting to the duct beats any position in the room.
Can I put the diffuser directly under the air conditioner?
No, that is the worst position in the room. The air directly below a wall-mounted indoor unit is the coldest and driest in the space, condensate can drip from the unit onto whatever is beneath it, and you are at the wrong end of the circulation loop, so the output is pulled straight back into the cold stream and scattered. Move it to the side of the room the air returns along, roughly two metres from the unit and out of the direct throw. If the only free surface is under the unit, wall mount the machine on a side wall instead.
Does the AC filter remove the fragrance from the air?
Less than people assume. A mesh filter captures particles, not vapour, so it does not strip fragrance out of the air the way it strips dust. The larger effects are temperature and airflow: cold air slows evaporation, so less fragrance vapour is released in the first place, and the cold stream scatters and thins anything fired into it. What does happen over time is that oily residue and dust collect together on a neglected filter, which is one more reason to wash the filters every two to four weeks. Place the machine on the return path rather than in the draught.
Will good placement fix a stale house?
No. A scent machine adds fragrance, it does not remove odour. Diffusing a fragrance does not break down, neutralise or capture the molecules already in the air, so scenting a house with no air exchange and a dirty evaporator coil gives you both smells at once, which is worse than either on its own. Ventilation, filter cleaning and a proper coil and drain service are what remove the smell. Fragrance is the finish on air that is already clear, and used that way it is genuinely worth having.
