If you already have a Vaayu, or are about to, this is the page about using it well in a home where someone actually cooks. The short version: later than you think, lower than you think, and on a timer. The longer version covers placement, intensity, refills, and the things it will not do.
Quick answers — read this first
When should you use the SOSA Vaayu after cooking? About 30 to 45 minutes after the hob goes off, once the extraction has run its 15 to 20 minute tail and the warm surfaces have been wiped. Run it on a low to medium intensity for around an hour rather than at full strength for a few minutes. Do not run it while you are cooking: the extraction vents the fragrance straight out of the building and the air in the room is still loading with cooking oil aerosol, so you get perfume mixed with frying and a faster rate of oil consumption. If guests are coming, start it 30 to 45 minutes before they arrive on a medium setting and then leave the intensity alone.

Where should the SOSA Vaayu be placed in an open-plan home? On the air path, not in a still corner. Put it where the kitchen, dining and living volumes connect, near an air-conditioning return or on the natural circulation route between rooms, and out of reach of children - the Vaayu has a key-lock for exactly that reason. It stands freestanding, wall mounts or mounts to HVAC, is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, and covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, so one machine handles a whole open floor. Do not place it directly beside the hob or inside the extraction airflow.

What intensity should the SOSA Vaayu be set to in a home that cooks? Lower than instinct suggests. Set it to the level a visitor would call pleasant rather than the level you can detect, because your own nose adapts within minutes and will always tell you to turn it up. Low to medium on scheduled runs is right for most homes, and it makes the 400ml tank last considerably longer - up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours. Never raise the intensity to cover a cooking smell that is still present, because fragrance over frying oil smells worse than either on its own.
The short answer
Short answer: about 30 to 45 minutes after the hob goes off, once the extraction has run its 15 to 20 minute tail and the warm surfaces have been wiped - on a low to medium setting for roughly an hour, ideally on a timer. Not during cooking, when the extraction simply vents the fragrance you have paid for, and never turned up to cover a smell that is still present.
The pick: one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) on the main air path of the open floor - 1000m³ of coverage, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, waterless, under 38dB, 400ml tank lasting up to about 75 days, with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers so the post-cooking run happens by itself.
Next step: tell us when you cook, how big the floor is and where the kitchen sits, and we will write the schedule for you - ask us what fits your home.
When to run the SOSA Vaayu around cookingWhile cooking: OFF. The extraction is venting whatever you releaseHob off to +15 min: OFF. This is extraction tail time, not fragrance time+15 to +30 min: OFF. Wipe the warm surfaces, air the cushions+30 to +45 min: ON, low to medium, for about an hourGuests coming: ON 30-45 min before arrival, medium, then leave it alone
The Vaayu is worth running when the air is clear, which is roughly half an hour after the hob goes off. Run it while you are cooking and you are simply venting fragrance oil out of the chimney you are also paying to run.

Straight answer
When exactly should the Vaayu be running in a home where we cook every day?
Start with when it should not be running, because that is where most of the waste happens. Not while you are cooking. The extraction that should be running over your hob will vent the fragrance you release straight out of the building, and the air in the room is still loading with cooking oil aerosol, so what remains is perfume mixed with frying. You are paying for oil to throw it out of a duct. Not in the first fifteen minutes after the hob goes off either, because that is extraction tail time: a hot hob and cooling oil keep emitting, and the chimney should still be running. Not in the next fifteen, which is when you wipe the hob surround, the counters and the dining table while the film is warm and fresh, and take the throws and cushions to a window. So the answer is 30 to 45 minutes after the hob goes off, on a low to medium intensity, for about an hour. At that point the air is clear, the room is wiped, and the fragrance you release stays in the room and settles rather than mixing with what is left of dinner. If people are coming, the same logic gives you a different anchor: start it 30 to 45 minutes before arrival so it has diffused and settled by the time the bell goes. On placement, put it on the air path where the kitchen, dining and living volumes connect, or near an air-conditioning return - not in a still corner behind a sofa, and not inside the extraction airflow. It stands freestanding, wall mounts or mounts to HVAC, and at 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg it sits happily on a console or a sideboard. Use the key-lock if there are children. On settings, 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and adjustable intensity mean the whole thing can be scheduled once and forgotten, and a lower setting makes the 400ml tank last far longer - up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours. And the limit, stated plainly: A scent machine does not remove odour molecules. It adds fragrance molecules alongside them. Diffusing a fragrance does not break down, neutralise, capture or cancel a cooking odour, and any brand telling you otherwise is overselling a fragrance product. Run a diffuser in a room that still smells of last night's frying and you get both smells at once - and frying oil sitting under a strong sweet fragrance is genuinely worse than either on its own, because the nose stops reading two smells and starts reading one confusing new one. One more line worth being clear about: a fragrance machine is a fragrance machine. It is not an air purifier, it does not filter, disinfect or remove anything from the air, and it makes no health claim of any kind. A free home scenting plan will set your schedule, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Thirty to forty-five minutes after the hob goes off, low to medium, for about an hour, on a timer. Never during cooking. Never turned up to cover a smell that is still there.
The settings that matter: low to medium intensity, a one-hour scheduled run starting 30 to 45 minutes after the hob goes off, and the machine placed on the air path rather than in a corner. The SOSA Vaayu covers 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft) at under 38dB and 5W, waterless, with a 400ml tank lasting up to about 75 days.

When to run it, when not to, and at what intensity

Three settings decide whether the machine helps or simply costs you oil: when it runs, how hard it runs, and where it stands.

1
When it runs
After the extraction, never during the cooking
The rule is simple: the Vaayu goes on when the chimney goes off, plus a wipe-down. In practice that is about 30 to 45 minutes after the hob goes off. Running it during cooking is the most common misuse and it fails three ways at once - the extraction vents the fragrance, the room is still loading with cooking aerosol, and the oil consumption goes up sharply for no benefit. There are two other timings worth setting. A short morning run, while the house is being opened up and aired, gives the home its baseline for the day. And on an evening with guests, start it 30 to 45 minutes before arrival rather than after cooking finishes, so it is settled when the door opens. Everything else - the intensity, the placement - matters less than getting these windows right.
Tip: the Vaayu goes on when the chimney goes off. That single rule fixes most usage problems.
SOSA Vaayu
The Vaayu app handles 1h/4h/8h/24h schedules, so both the morning and post-dinner runs happen without anyone remembering.

2
How hard it runs
Low to medium, set by a visitor's nose rather than your own
Your nose adapts to a continuous smell within minutes, which is why almost everyone sets their home fragrance too high. The reliable method is to set it low, leave the house for ten minutes, and walk back in - those first three seconds are the only honest report you will get. Better still, ask somebody who does not live there. Low to medium on a scheduled run is right for most Indian homes and has two side effects worth having: the fragrance reads as part of the house rather than as a product, and the 400ml tank lasts far longer, up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours, which works out at roughly five fills a year on a two-cycle schedule. The one rule that overrides all of this: never raise the intensity to cover a cooking smell that is still present.
SOSA Vaayu
Adjustable intensity and a 400ml tank up to about 75 days. Lower settings stretch a fill considerably.
See SOSA Vaayu →
3
Where it stands
On the moving air, out of reach, away from the hob
A nebuliser disperses fragrance into whatever air is moving past it, so placement decides coverage far more than intensity does. In an open plan, put it where the kitchen, dining and living volumes actually connect, or near an air-conditioning return, or on the natural draught line between rooms. Avoid three places: a still corner behind a sofa, where it scents that corner; directly inside the extraction airflow, where the chimney will pull the fragrance out; and the kitchen counter beside the hob, which exposes it to heat and grease. Keep it out of children's reach and use the key-lock. At 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg it is happy on a console, a sideboard or a wall bracket, and it can be HVAC-mounted where the home has ducted air.
Tip: if you can feel air moving there, it is a good place for the machine.
SOSA Vaayu
Freestanding, wall-mount or HVAC mount, with auto-stop and key-lock. Under 38dB, so it is inaudible in a living room.

The SOSA principle
A machine used at the wrong moment is worse than no machine, because it costs money and produces a smell you would not have chosen: fragrance mixed with frying.
Later, lower, and on a timer. Those three words are most of what there is to know.
SOSA Vaayu
The timing rule: SOSA Vaayu goes on 30 to 45 minutes after the hob goes off, low to medium, for about an hour. ₹11,999.

While the hob is on
Off. The extraction is running and will vent anything you release. The air is still loading with cooking oil aerosol, so fragrance now is oil spent for nothing.

Off. Extraction tail time - the chimney should still be running because a hot hob and cooling oil keep emitting.
15 to 30 minutes after the hob
Off. Wipe the warm surfaces, air the cushions and throws, put the bin out, close the far window so the room can settle.

The full household routine that this schedule sits inside is in how to reset your home fragrance after cooking dinner, and the version for an evening with guests is in how to make your house smell good before guests arrive after cooking. If you are still deciding whether a machine is even the right purchase for a cooking smell, read can a scent machine remove cooking odours first, because the answer there is no and we would rather you knew that before buying. The pillar is why your house doesn't smell fresh even after cleaning. And the specific mistake worth naming: do not answer a cooking smell by turning the fragrance up. A strong sweet scent over frying oil is the single worst-smelling combination in a home, and every one of us has walked into a flat and met it. If the room still smells of dinner, the answer is more air, not more perfume.

The commonest mistake with a good machine is running it at the wrong moment. Half an hour of patience after the hob goes off is worth more than any setting on the dial.

The honest limits, stated on the product's own page as well as here. A scent machine does not remove odour molecules. It adds fragrance molecules alongside them. A note from Sonal

People ask me how to get more out of the machine, and the answer is almost always to run it less. Later, lower and on a schedule. A Vaayu going while somebody is doing a tempering in an open kitchen is a machine working against a chimney, and the chimney wins - as it should, because that is the appliance that is actually removing something.

The setting people find hardest is intensity. You cannot smell your own home, so you will always want it higher. I ask people to set it low, walk out for ten minutes and come back in, and to trust those first three seconds. Better still, ask a friend. Almost every home I visit that feels over-scented belongs to somebody who genuinely cannot smell it any more. Low, on a schedule, is what makes a Vaayu read as part of the house rather than as a product in the room.

And the limits, which are on my product page as well as here. A scent machine does not remove odour molecules. It adds fragrance molecules alongside them. Frequently asked questions

When should you use the SOSA Vaayu after cooking?
About 30 to 45 minutes after the hob goes off. By then the extraction has run its 15 to 20 minute tail, the warm surfaces have been wiped and the airborne part of the cooking smell has cleared, so the fragrance lands on clear air and settles instead of mixing with dinner. Run it low to medium for about an hour, ideally on a timer. If guests are coming, use their arrival as the anchor instead and start it 30 to 45 minutes before they walk in.
Can I run the Vaayu while I am cooking?
You can, but it is a waste. The extraction over your hob will vent the fragrance out of the building, the room is still loading with cooking oil aerosol, and what remains in the air is perfume mixed with frying. You get a worse smell and a much faster rate of oil consumption. The simple rule is that the Vaayu goes on when the chimney goes off, plus the time it takes to wipe down.
Where should I place the Vaayu in an open-plan home?
On the air path, where the kitchen, dining and living volumes connect, or near an air-conditioning return or the natural draught line between rooms. Avoid a still corner behind a sofa, avoid the extraction airflow itself, and do not put it on the counter beside the hob where it meets heat and grease. Keep it out of children's reach and use the key-lock. It is 165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, and can stand freestanding, wall mount or mount to HVAC.
What intensity and schedule should I use in a home that cooks daily?
Low to medium, on two scheduled runs: a short one in the morning while the house is being aired, and one starting 30 to 45 minutes after the evening hob goes off. Set the level by how a visitor would describe it rather than by what you can detect, because your nose adapts within minutes. Lower settings also stretch the 400ml tank considerably, which lasts up to about 75 days depending on intensity and run hours. Never raise the intensity to cover a cooking smell that is still present.
Will the Vaayu get rid of the cooking smell?
No. A scent machine adds fragrance, it does not remove odour. Nothing about diffusing a fragrance breaks down, neutralises or captures cooking odour molecules, so a diffuser running in a room that still smells of frying gives you both smells at once. Layering a strong scent over cooking oil is usually worse than either smell alone, because your nose reads the combination as one confusing new smell rather than two separate ones. Extraction, ventilation and cleaning are what remove the smell. Fragrance is the finish on a room that is already clear.
