There is a particular feeling that arrives about two weeks after the last cushion goes in. The house is finished, everybody has said it looks lovely, and you walk in one evening and think: something is still missing. Almost nobody who feels this needs more furniture. Here is what that feeling usually is, and what to buy to close it.
Quick answers — read this first
What should I buy after I have finished decorating my home? Nothing else to look at. The missing feeling in a freshly decorated home is usually light temperature, sound, the state of the entrance and the absence of a smell. Change cool white bulbs for 2700K on a dimmer, soften a hard room with a rug and felt pads, clear and organise the first two square feet inside the door, and give the house one continuous fragrance. That last needs a machine: a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft.
Why does my home feel empty even though it is fully decorated? Because decorating addresses one sense. A room can be beautifully composed and still feel unoccupied if it sounds hard, is lit coolly from overhead and smells of nothing at all. Smell is the strongest of the three for the feeling of being lived in, and it is the only one that needs to run continuously. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) holds a single scent across a whole floor on a 400ml tank lasting up to 75 days.
What is the last thing to buy for a new home? The scent layer, and it should genuinely be last, after the paint, adhesives and new furniture have had time to off-gas and the house has been aired properly. Then one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999), waterless and under 38dB, running one fragrance low and continuously from the main air path.
The short answer
Short answer: do not buy another object. What is missing after decorating is usually warm light instead of cool white, softness in a hard-sounding room, an entrance that stays clear, and a smell the house holds all day. The last one needs equipment: a SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) covers 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, at under 38dB.
The pick: warm the light, soften the sound, clear the entrance, and finish with one SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) running a single fragrance continuously at a low level.
Next step: tell us your layout and how long ago the work finished and we will tell you when and how to start scenting - ask us what fits your home.
I have finished decorating and something still feels missing. What do I buy?
First, believe the feeling and do not solve it by shopping for objects, because a decorated room that is one object short is rare and a decorated room that is three senses short is normal. Work through them in this order. Light. If your bulbs are cool white, every evening in that house is fighting the room; move to 2700K throughout one sightline and put the main circuit on a dimmer, and use two or three low sources instead of one ceiling fitting. Sound. A hard, echoing room reads as unfinished. A rug with a real underlay, felt pads under every leg and soft-close dampers on cabinet doors will do more for the feeling of the room than anything you can hang on the wall. The entrance. The first two square feet inside the door set the tone for everything after: a mat long enough for two steps, a tray for keys and wallet, a hook or a place for bags, so the console never becomes a surface of last resort. And then smell, which is the difference between a decorated house and an inhabited one. A show flat is decorated and smells of nothing. A home that has been lived in well has a smell it keeps. You cannot buy that in an object, because the format has to be able to run: a candle gives you about three hours a week, a reed diffuser fades by its seventh week, and a spray is gone in twenty minutes. One SOSA Vaayu (₹11,999) holds it: rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft, waterless so there is no dampness or residue on new joinery, art or textiles, under 38dB, with 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h schedules. If the work finished very recently, wait: let paint, adhesives and new furniture off-gas and air the place thoroughly before you scent anything, because fragrance over that gives you both smells at once. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. A free home scenting plan will tell you whether one machine covers your floor, and a portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
The missing thing is rarely an object. It is warm light, a softer sounding room, a clear entrance, and a smell the house keeps all day.
If the house looks right and still feels unfinished, this is usually the gap: one SOSA Vaayu, waterless, rated to 1000m³ (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), under 38dB, holding 400ml for up to 75 days with app timers, so the house has a smell of its own rather than none at all.
The light, the rug and the entrance you can sort out with anybody. The scent layer is ours, so here is the machine in full: three photographs of the same unit, each linking to the live product page and its specification.
Waterless cold-air nebuliser rated to 1000m³, about 2,000-3,000 sq ft. 400ml tank lasting up to 75 days, Bluetooth app with 1h/4h/8h/24h timers and adjustable intensity, under 38dB. No water, no heat, no dampness, no residue.
A cold-air nebuliser adds nothing wet to the room. In a home with fresh veneer, new upholstery, art and books, that is the argument against an ultrasonic mist diffuser sitting on a console.
165 x 80.5 x 215mm and 0.9kg, freestanding on a console, wall mounted in a passage or fixed to the return-air path. Under 38dB, so it can sit outside a bedroom door without anybody noticing.
1000m³ coverage (about 2,000-3,000 sq ft), 400ml tank lasting up to 75 days, Bluetooth app and 1h/4h/8h/24h timers with adjustable intensity, under 38dB, 5W, freestanding or wall and HVAC mount, auto-stop and key-lock. CE, RoHS and SGS certified. Made in India.
That missing feeling is specific and it repeats. In the homes I visit it is nearly always one of these three, and usually the third.

The house is decorated but not settled
Everything is new at once, which reads as a display
A home where every object arrived in the same six weeks looks composed and feels like a showroom. Time fixes some of this on its own. You can help it by breaking the uniformity deliberately: one older object in each room, books that are actually read, a rug that is not brand new, and light that is warm rather than showroom-bright. The aim is not clutter. The aim is evidence that somebody lives here, which is the exact quality a fully coordinated interior removes.
Tip: one thing in each room should be older than the room.
A consistent smell is the strongest evidence of habitation there is. The Vaayu supplies it from day one.
Walk in and check each sense separately. Is the light warm and layered, or one cool fitting overhead? Does the room absorb sound or bounce it? Is the entrance clear? Does the place smell of anything at all, or of last night's cooking? A room can be beautiful in a photograph and disagree with itself in every other channel. Most of the fixes are cheap, and none of them involves buying more furniture. This is also why people who redecorate at this point usually end up in the same position again.
The Vaayu settles the sense that decorating never touches, at 1000m³ from one point.
Decorated homes smell of nothing, which is why they feel unoccupied
This is the one people are least likely to name and most likely to be reacting to. Newly finished homes smell either of the work that made them or of nothing, and both read as uninhabited. A home that smells the same every day, at a level you notice on the way in and forget a minute later, is what your brain files as lived in. The important word is every day. It cannot be an occasion, and no format that needs lighting or replacing every few weeks will hold it. Give it to a machine and a schedule and it stops being a task.
Tip: if a guest mentions it in the first minute and not again, the level is right.
The Vaayu runs 400ml for up to 75 days at a low continuous setting, on 1h, 4h, 8h and 24h timers.
One machine, one fragrance, one schedule. The Vaayu is waterless, so there is no damp and nothing settling on new joinery, art, books or upholstery, it is quiet enough to sit outside a bedroom, and it is made in India. A portion of every order supports girl-child education through Nanhi Kali.
Timing note, and it matters more than the machine. If your paint, adhesives or new furniture are recent, do not scent yet. Air the house thoroughly, run the fans, open everything you can for a few weeks, and let the off-gassing finish. Fragrance over that smell gives you both at once. Fragrance is also not an air purifier and makes no health claim, and it will not fix damp, pet odour or a musty cupboard. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. If you are unsure whether your home is ready, ask us what fits your home and we will tell you honestly.

A note from Sonal
I know the feeling this page is about, because I have had it in my own house. Everything was in, everybody had been complimentary, and I walked in one evening and thought: this is somebody else's beautiful flat. Nothing was wrong. It just had not started being ours yet, and no amount of shopping was going to fix that particular problem.
What actually closed it was unglamorous. Warmer bulbs, a rug that softened the sound, a clear entrance, and a smell the house kept all day rather than only when I lit something. That last one is the piece people never plan and the piece guests react to first. One Vaayu covers 1000m³ - about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft - so it is one machine for the whole floor, and my honest advice is to run it lower than you want to.
And the honest part, especially for a home that has just been finished. Let new paint, adhesives and new furniture off-gas and air the place thoroughly before you scent anything. Fragrance works alongside ventilation and cleaning, never instead of them, it cannot cover a construction or new-furniture smell, and it is not an air purifier. SOSA's hotel-inspired fragrances are our own original interpretations of a style of scenting, composed in our own studio. SOSA is an independent Indian brand and is not affiliated with, or endorsed by, any hotel or hotel group. Frequently asked questions
I have finished decorating but the house still feels like something is missing. What should I buy?
Usually not another object. Check the senses that decorating does not cover: change cool white bulbs to 2700K and add a dimmer, soften a hard sounding room with a rug and underlay and felt pads, make the first two square feet inside the front door work properly, and give the house a smell it keeps all day. The last one needs equipment, and one SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) covers 1000 cubic metres, about 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft.
Why does a newly decorated home feel like a showroom?
Because everything arrived at once and nothing has any history in it, and because a coordinated interior usually removes the small irregularities that signal habitation. Warmer layered light, softer acoustics, one older object per room and a consistent smell all push it back towards lived in.
Should I add fragrance immediately after the interiors are done?
No. Let new paint, adhesives, boards and new furniture off-gas first and air the house thoroughly, which can take several weeks depending on ventilation. Fragrance layered over that smell gives you both at once. Once the air is genuinely neutral, start scenting at a low level.
How many diffusers does a finished 3BHK need?
One. A 1,200 sq ft flat at a ten foot ceiling holds roughly 340 cubic metres of air, comfortably inside the 1000 cubic metres a SOSA Vaayu (Rs 11,999) is rated for. Place it where air moves between the entrance and the living area, and use a single fragrance for the whole house.
Will a diffuser damage new furniture or artwork?
A waterless nebuliser like the SOSA Vaayu adds no water and no heat to the room, so there is no dampness and no residue, which is the reason we recommend it over an ultrasonic mist diffuser in a home with new veneer, art, books or leather. As with any fragrance, do not aim it directly at a surface at close range.
The last thing you buy: SOSA Vaayu, 1000m³ coverage, no water, no heat, no residue, auto-stop and key-lock. ₹11,999.
The house is finished. This is what it is missing.
