I have finished decorating and something still feels missing. What do I buy?
First, believe the feeling and do not solve it by shopping for objects, because a decorated room that is one object short is rare and a decorated room that is three senses short is normal. Work through them in this order. Light. Everything is new at once, which reads as a display
A home where every object arrived in the same six weeks looks composed and feels like a showroom. Time fixes some of this on its own. You can help it by breaking the uniformity deliberately: one older object in each room, books that are actually read, a rug that is not brand new, and light that is warm rather than showroom-bright. The senses do not agree
Warm room, cool light, hard sound, no smell
Walk in and check each sense separately. Is the light warm and layered, or one cool fitting overhead? Does the room absorb sound or bounce it? Is the entrance clear? Does the place smell of anything at all, or of last night's cooking? A room can be beautiful in a photograph and disagree with itself in every other channel. Most of the fixes are cheap, and none of them involves buying more furniture. This is also why people who redecorate at this point usually end up in the same position again.

This is the one people are least likely to name and most likely to be reacting to. Newly finished homes smell either of the work that made them or of nothing, and both read as uninhabited. A home that smells the same every day, at a level you notice on the way in and forget a minute later, is what your brain files as lived in. The important word is every day. I know the feeling this page is about, because I have had it in my own house. Everything was in, everybody had been complimentary, and I walked in one evening and thought: this is somebody else's beautiful flat. Nothing was wrong. It just had not started being ours yet, and no amount of shopping was going to fix that particular problem.
